1 Science Future Camp: diabetic foot ulcer is Denmark's largest welfare technological research and innovation initiative with focus on new technologies and services. It is aimed specifically at rehabilitation and monitoring activities within the Danish public health sector. This project, The Intelligent Bandage, is part of and focuses on exploring the possibilities of monitoring patients suffering from the disease diabetic foot ulcer in their home environment. Foot edema, swelling of the foot due to trapped excess liquid, is a common symptom of diabetic foot ulcer. The condition can quickly become critical and in such cases it is important to act fast. Therefore, it is of great interest to this study to develop a system, which can continuously monitor edema and send data directly to doctors and nursing staff. We plan to develop new sensor techniques and/or implement a new monitoring system in the treatment of diabetic foot ulcer. One of the tasks in the project is to find suitable sensors to monitor the edema. An experiment setup with artificial feet has already been made in order to simulate the edema. A peristaltic pump is employed to control the flow, as depicted in Figure 1. In addition, another physiological sign appearing together with edema is that the foot temperature increases significantly. This parameter will also be taken into the development of the system. With above experiment, we can simulate temperature change by pumping in heated liquid or using another suitable heating technique to increase/decrease partial temperature, and we thus have both conditions present, which have to be monitored. Thus, the next task is to use a set of temperature sensors to monitor the temperature condition of the foot. Ultimately, all the sensors will be integrated into an intelligent bandage, in which a battery driven sensor node collects data and transmits wirelessly to a center station, e.g. a smartphone. An App will be created to indicate data, provide feedback or warning, and further transfer data to healthcare center. Currently, Bluetooth low energy is the state of the art technology for developing wearable wireless sensor node. The Intelligent Bandage is based on cooperation with Odense University Hospital. Camp Patient@home: Develop mechatronics to help diabetic patients The camp project about monitoring diabetes patients will center on experiments of using advanced and new sensor technology to monitor and measure foot edema. DEAP sensors (Dielectric Electro Active Polymers) are stretch sensors produced by Danfoss PolyPower and very suitable for edema monitoring. The DEAP sensor is a capacitive sensor that changes its capacitance according to the applied stretching force.

2 We will present the students with artificial feet, the DEAP sensors and other equipment needed to simulate and monitor the edema. The students will discover three different measuring methods (phase-shift, amplitude-shift, constant current) with DEAP stretch sensor for measuring the swelling of a foot (change in capacitance of the sensor). Pre-camp activities at high schools See Related scholarly skills/courses beneath Camp assignments for students The students will be divided into different groups, 3 persons per group and a maximum of 10 groups, and each work with one of the measuring methods Phase-Shift, Amplitude-Shift and Constant current method. Additionally, the students will set up a temperature measuring circuitry in order to discover if there are any temperature correlations with their experimental results. The students will also assemble the electronics setup. This will be done on a prototype breadboard (TBD) following a guiding tutorial. After completing the setup, the students will perform an experimental analysis of the performance of their sensor system based on statistical means. Each group will present and discuss their results with all other groups after the experimental session. In short, the students will: 1. Set up the sensor system and assemble and test the interfacing electronics, and will be provided with a wireless temperature sensor (get familiar with the experiment setup of edema and temperature stimulation). 2. Build a temperature monitoring system and test it on the experiment setup. 3. Conduct experimental data and analyze resolution, accuracy, reproducibility and stability of their sensor system and the related interfacing method (understand the measuring principle and physics and the related interfacing method). 4. Optional: Interface to a microcontroller for mobile and portable data logging and data retrieval via SmartPhone (Android) App. One option is also to work further with this activity back at the school. 5. 3 Break Microcontroller interfacing and testing Results - presentation and discussion (Schedule is subject to changes) Tools to help the students The students will be handed out a bag with all the needed parts to setup a sensor system, including its interfacing electronics, a parts list, schematics and a written and/or video tutorial or video to work through. The exercises in the software program LabView will be prepared and ready to use for the high school students. Teachers will in advance divide the high students into groups to ensure even distribution of the skilled students in the groups.
