18 AncientWorld Justasthereisnoseriousconsensusabouttheexactdateof birthofthefirstcity(generaly,thathasbeenconsideredtobe UrorotherMesopotamiancities,butÇatalhöyük,insouthern Anatolia,could alsoclaim thetitle),wecannotestablisha precisebeginningofcityscapepainting. AtAkrotiri,on the Greek island ofsantorini,there is an enigmaticfresco painting (known asthe Ship Procession Fresco or theflotilaf resco ),representing aboattrip betweentwofortifiedcities,whichneverthelessarenotthe protagonistsofthecomposition.somethingsimilarhappensin the CityFresco,anaerialview ofacoastalcity(realor imagined)foundin1997atthebathsoftrajanin,rome.this couldbeconsideredthefirstcompletecityscapeinthehistory ofpainting.instabiae,nearpompei,someromanfrescoes partialydepictingacoastalcityhavealsobeenfound. ThisinterestincityscapepaintingstartedbyLorenzetididnot createacontinuousorremarkabletraditioninitaly,(although smalbutbrightcityscapesappearasbackgroundsinsome worksbythemostfamouspaintersofthatera,suchasinthe SaintHelenaandtheHolyCross bypierodelafrancesca). ThischangedinthelateQuatrocento.Atthattime,some Venetianpainters,mostnotablyVitoreCarpaccioandGentile Belini,createdwhatcanbeconsideredthefirst goldenage ofcityscapepaintinginwesternart,ashortbutremarkable preludetothe vedutepainting,whichwewilexamineina forthcomingsection. ThePioneers:from thetrecentotothehighrenaissance DuringtheMiddleAges,partialrepresentationsofcitiescanbe found as backgrounds in many iluminated manuscripts, withouteverachievingaspecialroleinthecomposition.inthe latethirteenthandearlyfourteenthcentury,westernartbegan torevive.thankstoducciodabuonisegna,cimabue,and, aboveal,giotodibondone,europeanpaintingwas freed from therigidbyzantinetradition,renewingitssoulandstarting ininnew directions.ambrogiolorenzeti(c )painted thefrescoknownas CitybytheSea (Pinacoteca,Siena)in 1335,and itis generaly considered to be the firsttrue cityscape ofthe history ofwestern Art.Buteven more remarkableishis AlegoryofGoodGovernment (c , PalazzoPublico,Siena),which,withitsmanychromaticplanes and,lackofperspective,isenigmaticalyevocativeofsome paintingsfrom theearlytwentiethcenturyavant-gardes,like SchieleandKlimt. AlbrechtAltdorfer,BatleofAlexanderatIssus Atthattime,someVenetianpainters,mostnotablyVittoreCarpaccioandGentileBelini,createdwhatcanbe consideredthefirst goldenage ofcityscapepaintingin WesternArt. 19 Intheverydetailed"MadonnaofChancelorRolin, Janvan thequalityofthisrepresentation,thecitydoesnotreacha leadingrole statusinthepainting,justlikein SaintUrsula Shrine byhansmemling.itseemslikedutch art,with Eyckshowsatthebotom ofthecompositionastunningrepresentationofarivercity,possiblylyon,france.butdespite notableexceptionssuchasmaartenvanheemskerck( ),waskeepingitsinterestintheurbanlandscapeuntilan importantturningpoint. TheEstablishmentofCityscape:theDelftSchool ThebeautifulcityofDelft,inwesternHoland,hadcauseda specialadmiration among painters since the end ofthe Renaissance,appearinginworkssuchas DelftVanuithet Westen (c.1615)byhendrickcorneliszvroom ( ). Butitwasinthesecondhalfoftheseventeenthcentury,after thecatastrophicexplosionofagunpowderstoreinthecityin 1654(notablyrepresentedbypainterEgbertvanderPoelin ExplosioninDelft ),the DelftSchool reacheditszenith. Canaleto,TheStonemason'sYard ThemostprominentartistofthisschoolisJohannesVermeer ( ).Bynomeansaprolificpainter,onlythirtyfive workscanbeatributedwithcertaintotheartist.amongthem aretwocityscapesthatcanbeconsideredamongthemost importanteverpainted.thefirstisthefamous View ofdelft, whichmarcelproustconsidered tobe themostbeautiful pictureintheworld. Init,theincredibleprecisionwithwhich theartistpaintedthearchitectureofdelftmademanycritics suspecttheuseofacameraobscura,althoughthisfacthasnot been confirmed.less famous than the previous painting, StreetinDelft (alsoknownas TheLitleStreet, 1661, Rijksmuseum,Amsterdam)combines a seemingly simple composition with severalelements,such as the marked asymmetryofthecompositionorthefocusoneverydaylife, whichseemstoanticipatetwentieth-centurycityscapes. CanaletoandtheVedutistas Intheearlyeighteenthcentury,itwasusualamongthewealthy BritishbusinessmentomakeatriptothemajorItaliancities, includingvenice;atripknownasthe GrandTour. Desiringto returntotherainynorthwithadecentsouvenirofvenetianlight andarchitecture,thetravelersacquiredviewsofthe Cityofthe Channels painted by localartists,thus promoting the formationofanew genreofpaintingcaled,thevedute.heirs of the aforementioned Venetian painters from the late Quatrocento and early Cinquecento (Carpaccio,Belini), Vedutepaintersdidnotneed excuses (suchroyalorpapal receptions)toincludethecityinhispaintings:venice-itslight, itsarchitecture-isthesoleandonlystarofthecomposition. 20 Impressionism InInthesecondhalfofthenineteenthcentury,Napoleon I appointedhaussmannresponsiblefortheambitiousproject ofturning the French capitalinto the mostmodern and powerful European metropolis of its time. After this modernizing boost,paris turned into one ofthe favorite pictorialsubjectsforimpressionistpainters.from Edouard ManettoGustaveCailebote,from PiereAugusteRenoirto CamilePissaro,thenew Pariswaschosenastheultimate sourceofinspirationbymanyofthemostimportantpainters oftheera. PaintingtheAmericancity:from WhistlertoDiebenkorn JamesAbbotMcNeilWhistler( ),perhapsthemost prominentnineteenthcenturyamericanpainter,isalsooneof themostimportantfiguresinamericancityscapepaintingof thatcentury.hisnightviewsofamericanandeuropeancities reachedtheirzenithinthesensational"nocturneinblackand Gold:TheFalingRocket"(1874,DetroitInstituteofArts).After Whistler,the mostnotable painterin thisgenre ischilde Hassam ( ),oneofthemostrepresentativefiguresof American Impressionism,whosepaintingsof flags (most notably TheAvenueintheRain,1917)arestiloneofthemost easilyidentifiableimagesofamericanpainting. Apeakinthehistoryofcityscapepaintingwasreachedwith theapparitionofthe"ashcanschool,"agroupofamerican realistpaintersfocusedondepictingeverydaylifeintheearly 19thcenturyNew YorkCity.Thefirstleaderofthisgeneration ofartistswasroberthenri,creatoroficonicworkssuchas "Snow in New York" (1902, National Galery of Art, Washington),andwhowasfolowedbyimportantartistslike EveretShinnandJohnFrenchSloan. GustaveCailebote,ParisStreet,RainyDay Inadditiontogeneralviewsofthecity,includingthefamous "ParisStreet,RainyDay"byGustaveCailebote(1877,Paris, Musée d'orsay) and the spectacular "The Boulevard MontmartreatNight"byCamilePissaro (1897,London, NationalGalery), the Impressionist painters were also atracted bythe innovative elementsofthe modern city, especialythoserelated to therailway.thus,railstations becameacentralpartoftheimpressionist iconography. And among them, the Saint-Lazare Station ( Le Gare Saint-Lazare ) fulfiledaltheimpressionistambitions.the sensational"legaresaintlazare(saintlazarestation)" (1877,Paris,Muséed'Orsay)byClaudeMonet,wasadmired evenbycriticsofthattime,somethingunusualintheeraof theimpressionists.theaforementionedgustavecailebote wasanotherpainterwhowasatractedbytherailwayworld, ascanbeseeninoneofhismostfamouspaintings,"the BridgeofEurope"(1876,MuséeduPetitPalais,Geneva).As an 18th centuryartdealersaid to one ofhiscustomers. Canaleto'spopularityamongtheBritishbusinessmentook him toengland,whereheincreased hisfameand fortune paintinglandscapesinlondon.inadditiontocanaleto,we shouldmentiontwoimportantpredecessors,gasparvanwitel (adutchmanlivinginitaly)andlucacarlevarijs,aswelasthe twomosttalentedfolowersofcanaleto,bernardobeloto andfrancescoguardi. ThetwomostimportantartistsofthisgenerationwereGeorge BelowsandEdwardHopper.Belows,atalentedpainterwith averyactivesocialconscience,wasthegreatnaratorofthe life ofthe New Yorker s lower-middle class ofhis time, reachinghisgreatestachievementsin"clifdwelers"(1913, LosAngeles,CountyMuseum ofart)and thesensational "New York"(1911,NationalGalery ofart,washington). Hopper,meanwhile,wilalwaysberegardedas"thepainterof urbanloneliness, andhepreferedscenesthattookplace inside hotels and apartments,and painted the famous "Nighthawks"(1942,ArtInstituteofChicago). 21 UrbanLandscapeandAvant-garde Cityscapesfrom theavant-gardeperiodwereasvariedasthe actualartsceneofthattime.letusbrieflyreview themost significantavant-gardesofthetimeandtheirrelationwith cityscapepainting. TheContemporaryCity:Photorealism andhyperealism Cityscape painting flourished afterworld War I,already appearing in the repertory ofthe abstractexpressionist painters,forexamplein"citylandscape"byjoanmitchel (1955,ArtInstituteofChicago)orinsomeaudaciouspictorial experimentsbywilem dekooning. Cityscapesfrom theavant-gardeperiodwereasvaried astheactualartsceneofthattime. Amongalcubistpainters,theonewhodevotedmostofhis oeuvretocityscapepaintingwasfernandleger."thecity" (1919,Museum ofart,philadelphia),ishismostsignificant work,inadditiontobeingoneofthefinesturbanlandscapes everpainted.averypainterly,thoughmore usual cityscape is"champ demars,thered Tower"(1911,Chicago,Art Institute),byRobertDelaunay. Departingfrom thedominantabstractexpressionism ofthelate 40'sandearly50's,thepaintersofthe"BayAreaFigurative Movement"resortedtofigurativepaintingtodepictthelightof the WestCoast.Richard Diebenkorn ( )began adopting the style ofabstractexpressionism,butsoon changed to figurative language ("Cityscape I, 1963,San FranciscoMuseum ofmodernart).waynethiebaud,famous forhispaintingsoftoysandcandies,isalsoknownforhis viewsofavenuesandhugehighwaysincalifornia,anartistic productioninwhichheisstilactivetoday. Manypaintersfrom the so-caled SchoolofParis also createdtheiruniquevisionsofthefrenchcapital.from the colorfulworksofhenrimatisse("arabcity,"1905)andraoul Dufy("StreetDeckedwithFlags,"1906,LeHavre,National Museum)to the very personalwork ofmarc Chagal, especialythe"paristhroughthewindow"(1913),inwhich theartistshowsusamysteriousandindecipherableparisin whichnothing-ornobody-isrealywhattheyappeartobe. WemustalsomentiontheItalianFuturists,tenaciousintheir efortstorepresentthemovementofthecontemporarycity (UmbertoBoccioni:"TheCityRises," ,New York, Museum ofmodernart). RichardEstes,Jone'sDiner InGermanyduringtheyearsimmediatelyfolowingtheFirst WorldWar,hefigureofGeorgeGroszrosetoprominence.He wasanenigmaticpainter,sometimeslabeleda dada artist, whichistheeasiestwayofdescribingsuchanunclassifiable artist.inworkslike"metropolis"(1917,new York,MOMA)and "The funeralofoskarpanizza" ( ,Staatsgalerie, Stutgart),Groszruthlesslydepictedtheurbansocietyofhis time,dazedanddisorientedaftertherecentviolenceofwar. Movingintomoreabstractworks,wefindthefigureofPiet Mondrian,who,afteremigratingtotheUnitedStates,created hisoriginalvisionsofnew YorkCity,amongthem thefamous "BroadwayBoogieWoogie"( ,New York,MOMA), whichthepainterrobertmotherweldescribedwiththese words:"the Modern City!Precise,rectangular,squared, whetherseenfrom above,below,orontheside;brightlights and sterilized life; Broadway, whites and blacks; and boogie-woogie;the underground music ofthe atonce resignedandrebelious." Butthemostimportantcontributiontocityscapepaintingin recenttimeshasbeenmadebyphotorealistandhyperealist painters.withinthefirstgroup,themostimportantisthefigure RichardEstes(born1932),possiblythemostimportantNew YorkcityscapespaintersinceGeorgeBelows,whoseartistic production spans from the briliant "Horn and Hardart Automat"(1967) totherecent"broadwaybusstop,near LincolnCenter (2010).InadditiontoEstes,weshouldmention theworksofrackstraw Downes(born1939),aBritish-born artistworkinginnew York,andYvonneJacquete(born1934), knownforhermanyaerialviewsofthegreatamericancities.
