18 AncientWorld Justasthereisnoseriousconsensusabouttheexactdateof birthofthefirstcity(generaly,thathasbeenconsideredtobe UrorotherMesopotamiancities,butÇatalhöyük,insouthern Anatolia,could alsoclaim thetitle),wecannotestablisha precisebeginningofcityscapepainting. AtAkrotiri,on the Greek island ofsantorini,there is an enigmaticfresco painting (known asthe Ship Procession Fresco or theflotilaf resco ),representing aboattrip betweentwofortifiedcities,whichneverthelessarenotthe protagonistsofthecomposition.somethingsimilarhappensin the CityFresco,anaerialview ofacoastalcity(realor imagined)foundin1997atthebathsoftrajanin,rome.this couldbeconsideredthefirstcompletecityscapeinthehistory ofpainting.instabiae,nearpompei,someromanfrescoes partialydepictingacoastalcityhavealsobeenfound. ThisinterestincityscapepaintingstartedbyLorenzetididnot createacontinuousorremarkabletraditioninitaly,(although smalbutbrightcityscapesappearasbackgroundsinsome worksbythemostfamouspaintersofthatera,suchasinthe SaintHelenaandtheHolyCross bypierodelafrancesca). ThischangedinthelateQuatrocento.Atthattime,some Venetianpainters,mostnotablyVitoreCarpaccioandGentile Belini,createdwhatcanbeconsideredthefirst goldenage ofcityscapepaintinginwesternart,ashortbutremarkable preludetothe vedutepainting,whichwewilexamineina forthcomingsection. TheEstablishmentofCityscape:theDelftSchool ThebeautifulcityofDelft,inwesternHoland,hadcauseda specialadmiration among painters since the end ofthe Renaissance,appearinginworkssuchas DelftVanuithet Westen (c.1615)byhendrickcorneliszvroom ( ). Butitwasinthesecondhalfoftheseventeenthcentury,after thecatastrophicexplosionofagunpowderstoreinthecityin 1654(notablyrepresentedbypainterEgbertvanderPoelin ExplosioninDelft ),the DelftSchool reacheditszenith. Canaleto,TheStonemason'sYard ThemostprominentartistofthisschoolisJohannesVermeer ( ).Bynomeansaprolificpainter,onlythirtyfive workscanbeatributedwithcertaintotheartist.amongthem aretwocityscapesthatcanbeconsideredamongthemost importanteverpainted.thefirstisthefamous View ofdelft, whichmarcelproustconsidered tobe themostbeautiful pictureintheworld. Init,theincredibleprecisionwithwhich theartistpaintedthearchitectureofdelftmademanycritics suspecttheuseofacameraobscura,althoughthisfacthasnot been confirmed.less famous than the previous painting, StreetinDelft (alsoknownas TheLitleStreet, 1661, Rijksmuseum,Amsterdam)combines a seemingly simple composition with severalelements,such as the marked asymmetryofthecompositionorthefocusoneverydaylife, whichseemstoanticipatetwentieth-centurycityscapes. After this modernizing boost,paris turned into one ofthe favorite pictorialsubjectsforimpressionistpainters.from Edouard ManettoGustaveCailebote,from PiereAugusteRenoirto CamilePissaro,thenew Pariswaschosenastheultimate sourceofinspirationbymanyofthemostimportantpainters oftheera. PaintingtheAmericancity:from WhistlertoDiebenkorn JamesAbbotMcNeilWhistler( ),perhapsthemost prominentnineteenthcenturyamericanpainter,isalsooneof themostimportantfiguresinamericancityscapepaintingof thatcentury.hisnightviewsofamericanandeuropeancities reachedtheirzenithinthesensational"nocturneinblackand Gold:TheFalingRocket"(1874,DetroitInstituteofArts).After Whistler,the mostnotable painterin thisgenre ischilde Hassam ( ),oneofthemostrepresentativefiguresof American Impressionism,whosepaintingsof flags (most notably TheAvenueintheRain,1917)arestiloneofthemost easilyidentifiableimagesofamericanpainting. 21 UrbanLandscapeandAvant-garde Cityscapesfrom theavant-gardeperiodwereasvariedasthe actualartsceneofthattime.letusbrieflyreview themost significantavant-gardesofthetimeandtheirrelationwith cityscapepainting. TheContemporaryCity:Photorealism andhyperealism Cityscape painting flourished afterworld War I,already appearing in the repertory ofthe abstractexpressionist painters,forexamplein"citylandscape"byjoanmitchel (1955,ArtInstituteofChicago)orinsomeaudaciouspictorial experimentsbywilem dekooning. Cityscapesfrom theavant-gardeperiodwereasvaried astheactualartsceneofthattime. Amongalcubistpainters,theonewhodevotedmostofhis oeuvretocityscapepaintingwasfernandleger."thecity" (1919,Museum ofart,philadelphia),ishismostsignificant work,inadditiontobeingoneofthefinesturbanlandscapes everpainted.averypainterly,thoughmore usual cityscape is"champ demars,thered Tower"(1911,Chicago,Art Institute),byRobertDelaunay. Departingfrom thedominantabstractexpressionism ofthelate 40'sandearly50's,thepaintersofthe"BayAreaFigurative Movement"resortedtofigurativepaintingtodepictthelightof the WestCoast.Richard Diebenkorn ( )began adopting the style ofabstractexpressionism,butsoon changed to figurative language ("Cityscape I, 1963,San FranciscoMuseum ofmodernart).waynethiebaud,famous forhispaintingsoftoysandcandies,isalsoknownforhis viewsofavenuesandhugehighwaysincalifornia,anartistic productioninwhichheisstilactivetoday. Manypaintersfrom the so-caled SchoolofParis also createdtheiruniquevisionsofthefrenchcapital.from the colorfulworksofhenrimatisse("arabcity,"1905)andraoul Dufy("StreetDeckedwithFlags,"1906,LeHavre,National Museum)to the very personalwork ofmarc Chagal, especialythe"paristhroughthewindow"(1913),inwhich theartistshowsusamysteriousandindecipherableparisin whichnothing-ornobody-isrealywhattheyappeartobe. WemustalsomentiontheItalianFuturists,tenaciousintheir efortstorepresentthemovementofthecontemporarycity (UmbertoBoccioni:"TheCityRises," ,New York, Museum ofmodernart). RichardEstes,Jone'sDiner InGermanyduringtheyearsimmediatelyfolowingtheFirst WorldWar,hefigureofGeorgeGroszrosetoprominence.He wasanenigmaticpainter,sometimeslabeleda dada artist, whichistheeasiestwayofdescribingsuchanunclassifiable artist.inworkslike"metropolis"(1917,new York,MOMA)and "The funeralofoskarpanizza" ( ,Staatsgalerie, Stutgart),Groszruthlesslydepictedtheurbansocietyofhis time,dazedanddisorientedaftertherecentviolenceofwar.
