2 Staff Orientation What is Staff Orientation? -Orient: (def) to find one's position in relation to new and strange surroundings Why do we need Staff Orientation? -Because our lives are often going many different directions, being pulled by many different influences, headed to different destinations -In order to accomplish the goals of camp we need to all be headed the same direction...we need to orient ourselves to the new surrounding of camp and to align ourselves to the same purpose. What will we accomplish at Staff Orientation? -understand the basic personnel structure/organization of camp -understand the job responsibilities for every staff position -review the purpose and goals of Pathfinder Summer Bible Camp -define what a camp worker is and how to accomplish our goals -review the Path of Counseling and memorize God s Method for Change -review and understand the daily camp schedule -understand how each aspect of camp points toward our spiritual focus -to review and understand how to deal with camp-specific situations -to practice skits, understand games, and practice special music

3 PURPOSE STATEMENT: As a ministry of Northside Baptist Church, Pathfinder Summer Bible Camp has the goal of guiding young Christians toward the decision to follow Christ with their life, both in Salvation and in sanctification. 5 Purpose and Goals PURPOSE STATEMENT: As a ministry of Northside Baptist Church, Pathfinder Summer Bible Camp has the goal of guiding young Christians toward the decision to follow Christ with their life, both in Salvation and in sanctification. We try to accomplish that purpose by creating an atmosphere that is fun, relaxed, competitive, yet clearly focused on the preaching of God's Word, Scripture memory, and focused Bible study. 6 A Camp Worker s Primer...excerpts from the Wilds Staff Training Manual, Summer 2007 How did I become a camp worker? -We were volunteered (actually commanded) by God. -Galatians 6:1 Brethren, if a man be overtaken in a fault, ye which are spiritual, restore such an one in the spirit of meekness; considering thyself, lest thou also be tempted. What is our goal? -Our goal at camp is the same as our goal in life which is to glorify God and to point others to Christ by our actions and attitudes. What is counseling? -Counseling is the process by which one Christian helps restore another Christian to a place of usefulness. What does it mean to restore? -Restore means to mend the net, to set the fracture. It carries with it the idea of returning the part to usefulness. What is my greatest Resource and Advisor? -The Holy Spirit of God is with you as you lead, guide, and counsel. You should never counsel alone! What is my ministry as a counselor? -Your task is to minister the Word. All advise and counsel should be given in light of God s Word. How do you counsel unbelievers? -You don t! Unbelievers have no desire to please God and have a nature that is set against God. What unbelievers need is the Gospel. Always start there when counseling.

7 What if I have a camper with a need that I do not know the answer to? -You can refer that camper to an adult for counseling. However, realize that when you do so, you are referring yourself as well with them. Our goal isn t just with the campers. We have a goal to help you become equipped to deal with issues and sin problems Scripturally. If you don t know the answer, we want to help you know what the answer is. What if a camper offers to tell you something if you promise not to tell? -You might say, Hezekiah, I really appreciate you trusting me with your problems, but I can t really make a promise like that. Keeping something a secret might not be the best things to help you obey God. However, I will promise that I wont tell anyone unless they are part of the problem or part of the solution.and I will let you know if that is necessary. *Understand, much of the sin we face in life is done privately and should be handled privately. Please refrain from discussing camper issues with other teens. Instead, spend time in prayer that God will give them victory over that sin. *If a child verbalizes that he or she is in an abusive situation, let Pastor Harry or Pastor Felber know as soon as possible. These types of situations are very sensitive and need to be handled carefully. Is it ever right to disobey the rules? -Hebrews 13:17 says to obey them that have the authority over you. At Pathfinders Summer Bible Camp, your authority is the administration of the church. Situation ethics has become rampant in society where, even in Christian circles, people feel they are an exception to the rules. For example...keeping lights on after lights out because of cabin prayer time...justifying being late to the service because the cause seems good. It is always right to obey your authorities unless there is a Biblical reason for doing otherwise. Please keep this in mind as you minister with your campers throughout the week.

8 God s Method for Change...excerpts from the Wilds Staff Training Manual, Summer 2007 God s Method for change is found in these three steps. *Put off *Renew *Put on Ephesians 4: This I say therefore, and testify in the Lord, that ye henceforth walk not as other Gentiles walk, in the vanity of their mind, 18 Having the understanding darkened, being alienated from the life of God through the ignorance that is in them, because of the blindness of their heart: 19 Who being past feeling have given themselves over unto lasciviousness, to work all uncleanness with greediness. 20 But ye have not so learned Christ; 21 If so be that ye have heard him, and have been taught by him, as the truth is in Jesus: 22 That ye put off concerning the former conversation the old man, which is corrupt according to the deceitful lusts; 23 And be renewed in the spirit of your mind; 24 And that ye put on the new man, which after God is created in righteousness and true holiness. 1. Put Off: Confess and Forsake (Towards God) -To same the same thing, to abandon -I John 1:9 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. 2. Put Off: Make Restitution (Towards Man) -Proverbs 28:13 He that covereth his sins shall not prosper, but whoso confesseth and forsaketh them shall have mercy. -Matthew 5: Therefore if thou bring thy gift to the altar, and there rememberest that thy brother hath ought against thee; 24 Leave there thy gift before the altar, and go thy way; first be reconciled to thy brother, and then come and offer thy gift. 25 Agree with thine adversary quickly, whiles thou art in the way with him; lest at any time the adversary deliver thee to the judge, and the judge deliver thee to the officer, and thou be cast into prison.

Put On: Replacement -replacing the unrighteous with the righteous, replacing unbelief and mistrust with belief and trust -Romans 13:14 But put ye on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make not provision for the flesh, to fulfill the lust therof. -Romans 12:21 Be not overcome of evil, but overcome evil with good. 5. Put On: Accountability -enlisting the help of wise, mature friends and family who understand the goals that God has for my life -Ecclesiastes 4: Two are better than one; because they have a good reward for their labour. 10 For if they fall, the one will lift up his fellow: but woe to him that is alone when he falleth; for he hath not another to help him up. 11 Again, if two lie together, then they have heat: but how can one be warm alone? 12 And if one prevail against him, two shall withstand him; and a threefold cord is not quickly broken.

11 -The MAP Method for Bible Study 1. Memorize the Passage *It is important when facing difficult times or temptations to know exactly what God said- word for word. Satan was able to gain a foothold in Eve s life because she didn t know exactly what God had said. A man who cannot remember God s exact words is in danger of leaning to his own understandings. (Prov 3:5-6) -Memorization hints for Scripture Memory -handwrite verses -use first letter helps -find a Scripture memory partner 2. Analyze the Passage *Study the passage asking the Holy Spirit to give you a thorough understanding of its message. -Intense focus: study the words of the passage, list the major words in passage and use a dictionary to find the meaning of each, focus on understanding the meaning of the passage in context...why did God give this to us in Scripture 3. Personalize the Message *Plan out concrete ways to make your life become consistent with Scripture. Plan schedules, steps, take the necessary action to make it personal. -What will be my response the next time I am faced with this temptation? What will be my response the next time I am faced with this pressure? What will be my response the next time I am treated unfairly?

14 Teen Staff Information: Arrival: You will need to be here Monday with all your things. Departure: Camp ends Friday, August 1st. Teens will work until approximately 4pm. There will be lots of cleanup and teardown as camp ends and we prepare the facilities for church on Sunday. What to bring: Bible, sleeping bag, pillow, towels, toiletries, appropriate camp clothing, pencils, clipboard, flashlight, tylenol... Clothing: What is expected: Clothing must cover the shoulders, be down to the knee, loose fitting and not draw attention to the body....so no tank tops, no high cut shirts, no see through, no shorts above the knee, no tight warm-up pants, no tight blue jeans... At evening services......staff guys need to wear long pants and a collared shirt....staff girls need to wear a skirt and a nicer blouse. **Teen workers will abide by the guidelines at all times during camp. There are no exceptions. This includes activity time, in the dorms, as well as going to and from the shower. Do not bring: scooters, skateboards, electronic devices that would be a distraction, knives. Medical Needs: There will be medical staff available during check-in to receive any medications for campers. There will also be first-aid care available in case of an emergency. Technology: Cell Phones: Campers are not allowed to have cell phones. Staff are allowed, however, they are NOT to be used by campers without the permission of administrative staff. They are NOT to be used during any time that you are with the campers or have other responsibilities. That means that cell phone usage is practically non-existent. Computers and other devices: Campers are not allowed to bring these devices. Staff should only bring them with permission. There is not time during the day to use them so it would be best to not bring them unless you have permission.

15 Camper Information: Arrival: Camp begins on Monday, July 28 th. Check-in will be in gymnasium at 3pm. Departure: Camp ends Friday, August 1st. Pick-up will be at 1pm. What to bring: Bible, sleeping bag, pillow, towels, toiletries, appropriate camp clothing Clothing: To maintain the Scriptural guidelines for modesty, we would ask that all clothing cover the shoulders, extend to the knee, be loose fitting and not draw attention to the body. Parents, please help your child as they are choosing clothes for camp. Make sure their clothing meets the above guidelines. Activity Dress will be appropriate for the entire week. Please make sure your child has towels, toiletries, and enough clothing for the week s activities plus some extra if they get wet. Do not bring: scooters, skateboards, electronic devices (phones, media players, radios, video games ), or any other extra items that would be a distraction during the week. Medical Needs: There will be medical staff available during check-in to receive any medications for campers. There will also be first-aid care available in case of an emergency.

17 Team Competition Purpose: 1. To create an atmosphere of fun and competition that draws kids to camp year after year 2. To help tear down barriers that exist between kids and authority, to put everyone in a fun, playful environment 3. 19 What to do when 1. Room Setup Time -Have your area well organized, neat...be an example -Space your campers out along the perimeter of the room...do not allow them to congregate in one area -Keep the middle open for walking and room inspections 2. During morning wakeup -Lead by example, organized for the morning, prepared for the day, cabin cleanup, personal hygiene, be on time to flag raising, 3. Cabin Cleanup -beds made (sleeping bags rolled out neatly) -floor picked up and clean -suitcases organized and neat -shoes neatly organized with laces tucked in -dirty clothes put away, not visible -you may chose one area off to the side to hang towels to dry...towels only! -trash can emptied and clean -door closed and lights out 4. Flag Raising -Respect for the flag, salute as raised, Pledge of Allegiance 5. Meals -Stand behind seats till prayer, help teach manners, family style, no one gets seconds until, respectful to the helpers, help with grumbling, help with thankful attitude, seconds, cleanup with dishes/silverware/cups, dismissal -more info to come Services -excited to sit up front, sit in middle of cabin kids, help keep focused and listening, avoid distractions, restrooms before service starts, encourage good singing, -salvation counseling, spiritual direction... -pray for the Lord to move and for children to respond

20 6. Morning Cabin Devotions -The Life of Daniel, Junior Bible Study produced by the Wilds Christian Camp -Studying the life of Daniel allows us to see character, integrity, and spiritual courage played out right before our eyes. -Help your campers learn how to study by working with them the first day and easing back a little more each day. Always follow up at the end of your time but by the end you want the campers to be able to read the Scripture, think through the issues, and make the application by themselves. -Stay in your assigned devotion area until time for the morning game to begin. 7. Scripture Memory -Use scripture memory time to help campers focus on God s Word and hide it in their hearts -Our goal is for each camper to be able to say Philippians 2:2-11 at the end of the week. -Extra verses are available, however, kids must be able to say verses in units of five in order to move on to the next set of five. -some campers will find this easy, some will not, be ready to help not discourage 8. Quiet Time/Your Story Hour -Campers will return to their rooms after lunch for 40 minutes of quiet listening -Each room will have a CD player and a CD with 3 Bible stories about Daniel. -Bring the kids into the cabin, have them sit or lay on their own sleeping bag -Encourage kids to jot down important names, places, events that occur in the story -We are developing the ability to sit still, listen, and absorb information. 9. Bible Quiz -Each evening campers will report to Team Bible Quiz right after dinner -We will divide into two groups -older kids in the youth center room, younger kids in the chapel -Red vs Blue, 7 v 7, quiz out with 2 both ways, 20 for corrects 10 for errors, free toss ups are 10 -Different starters each day, divide as equally as possible with guys and girls -Andrew Felber (Katherine) /Andrew Rysta (Kasi) -All counselors in the room, help with control, sit kids in order for substitutions

21 10. Team Competitions -help your cabin understand the rules you must pay attention! -keep your campers focused and involved -encourage team excitement (red vs blue) -your involvement is dependent on the game and is not designed to determine the outcome of the game 11. Free Time -Get involved with your campers, challenge other cabins, challenges within your cabins, -Free time games include board ball, carpet ball, ping pong, cornhole, Jumbo Jenga Evening Cleanup Time -Get ready for service, cleaned up, Bibles ready, hearts ready, prayer with cabin, get to the service early!! 13. Night Cabin Devotions -Re-focus before bedtime, spend time praying, not a open discussion time but you are talking with your campers bringing the day s messages into focus, calming them down 14. Bedtime -lights out, quiet, maybe soft music playing (I will provide CD), be firm but understand they will be very excited about the day, 15. Dealing with kids -treat kindly and gently, (not like a younger sibling), be patient, be focused for the week

22 16. Meal Time Instructions *It is very important that you follow the mealtime instructions. We are serving 90+ people per meal in the Gallery and it will be very tight. Please keep your campers seated during the meal. -Wait outside until the sign has been given to enter -Go to your designated meal chairs -Remain standing for camp verse and prayer -Be seated and begin serving family style -begin pouring drinks for the people around you -pass the food serving dishes in a clockwise manner around the table -no one gets seconds until everyone has had firsts -as the waitress if your table needs more of anything -do not let your campers get up unless the restroom is an emergency * Wilds Style meal cleanup -pass dirty dishes to the ends of the table, scraping food and trash onto one plate -separate silverware into the appropriate dirty silverware container -There will be roller carts for dirty dishes, cups, silverware... -wipe down your table, teach the campers how to wipe and not push trash off onto the floor. -You will be dismissed together after the tables are cleared...do NOT LEAVE EARLY!! What do I do if 1. Medical Emergency **Do not take the child to the school office. We have medical supplies and permission from parents to use them. **The use of phones by campers to call parents is not allowed unless given permission by Pastor Harry. Please do not take kids to the office to call their parents! -During the day: contact Pastor Harry immediately -At night: contact the dorm chaperone immediately

23 2. Homesick -be understanding, encourage, uplifting, try to calm their nerves and help them settle in 3. Wet night -be discreet, don t embarrass, let Mr. Delcamp or Ms. Naomi know that there is a sleeping bag that needs to be washed and, if in the middle of the night, we will have extra sleeping bags 4. Pranks -discourage pranking, keep kids in their own rooms during the day and in their own rooms and beds at night. No Pranks. 5. Not Hungry -campers really need to eat in order to maintain their health and strength, encourage to eat meals, we will have PB&J if all else fails 6.
