Each participant was given the task of creating a unique work in wood that can function as a container for at least one object which holds a particular fascination for him or her. The container should not be larger than cm and should primarily be made of wood.

17 The Danish Club 2009/10 The 2009/10 year was a huge year for the club. As our annual report for the year shows, our increased activities resulted in a very nice surplus, and it is great to see what can be achieved if we put in the effort. We introduced some new activities such as FOAN Folkies Old And New with 4 annual folk music events and our inaugural Christmas Market, and the initiative taken by a group of parents to have aregular Playgroup every Friday and first Sunday of the month has really taken off during the year, and it s great to see the club used for member activities. Our other events for the year included our Christmas Baking/decoration/hygge Day, Fastelavn, Easter Lunch, Teddy Bear s Birthday Party, Fashion Show and most importantly our Café Danmark, which is a full house event every month and so well supported by many members. Our participation in the Queensland Multicultural Festival last October was a big success and we all had a great day plus we achieved a substantial contribution to our financial result. We were very pleased to be accepted for the festival again this year and hope to see as many volunteers this year as we did last year without the support from members, it is simply too big a task for the committee to undertake, so don t be shy put your hand up and participate. Another milestone for the club was exceeding 150 member families and we also went past the 160 mark - needless to say the more members we are, the more activities we can offer, so if you know of anybody who would enjoy the activities we offer, encourage them to come along and join the club. I would like to thank you all for your ongoing support of the club it is great to see us grow and I encourage all to discuss any ideas for new events with us and to participate in the development and management of these events. Soren Hoimark
18 Scandinavian Book Club is on again in August Friday 27 August 2010 at 7.30 pm at the Danish Club mezzanine level (library) Austin Street Newstead. Phone Amanda Enjoy a coffee with us beforehand. Lentov, a young Jewish boy from Germany, their families become close in spite of the contrast between Isak's father's religious faith and the Larssons' strictly secular Swedish socialism. These two opposing viewpoints help form a unique framework for Simon and Isak as they come of age and work toward finding meaning in their lives, and as Fredriksson explores relations between fantasy, myth, and reality. Suggested reading for next Bookclub: Our little group has been discussing Scandinavian books related to the music genre. I have been reading Simon and the Oaks by Marianne Fredriksson who, if you are unfamiliar with her works, is a wonderful Scandinavian author who writes with a true warmth for all her characters. Established amidst the background music of the violin, this novel recounts a tale of family friendship and love. Simon Larsson, is a pensive and thoughtful boy growing up in Sweden during World War II, fortunate to be safe within a remarkably loving and cohesive community. Half Jewish, he is being raised by his Scandinavian aunt and uncle, who adopted him as their own at birth. In a novel rich in mystical overtones, his adoptive parents take on truly archetypal dimensions. Karin's deep love and compassion is matched by Erik's understated strength and stoicism, and together they create a firm family base from which 11 year-old Simon can grow and dream. But Simon, who doesn't know the story of his birth and adoption, seems set apart from his Scandinavian world by his dark hair and olive complexion, and he often retreats into fantasies to alleviate his feelings of disconnection. When he befriends Isak Stieg Larsson: Part 2 of the Millenium Trilogy: The Girl Who Played with Fire Come and join in the lively discussion Good reading, Amanda McLaughlin
