3 KEHS I 01 Welcome to King Edward VI High School for Girls Dear Parents, I am delighted that you are considering King Edward VI High School for Girls for your daughter. I hope our prospectus will give you an insight into the school and what makes us distinctive, but the best way to understand this is to come and visit us and meet the girls and staff. Details of our Open Events are included, but you are most welcome to have a tour of the school in session to see the girls in lessons and experience the atmosphere of the school for yourself. This booklet contains useful information about a number of practical matters which I hope you will find helpful. Our website ( which is updated regularly with the latest news, is also a good source of information. I hope to meet you and your daughter personally. 4 School Aims and Ethos Pastoral Care At KEHS, we aim to offer an outstanding education for able girls who like original ideas and new challenges. Girls combine a rigorous academic programme with high quality extra-curricular activities and of course we hope that each and every one of them has lots of fun along the way! We aim to offer girls a distinctive, academic education in a friendly, nurturing environment help girls to achieve academic success, inspiring a love of learning for its own sake give girls the confidence to aim high and pursue their ambitions encourage girls to achieve a productive and healthy work/life balance develop independent, resilient young women encourage girls to broaden their horizons and to think nationally and globally be accessible to able girls from all backgrounds encourage respect for others and a sense of collective responsibility provide a wide range of extra-curricular activities. Pastoral care is important to us as we seek to educate girls, making them confident young women and preparing them for life beyond school. Each girl has a Form Tutor whom she meets once a day. The Form Tutor provides a vital link between parents, girls and staff. Each year group also has a Head of Year, who works with the Head of Lower School (Thirds to Upper Fourth) and the Vice Principal with overall responsibility for pastoral care. We have a Director of Sixth Form to co-ordinate the pastoral care of students in the Sixth Form and to offer specialist advice. We have a full time matron, a school doctor, who comes into school on a weekly basis, and a school-based counsellor. Communication with Parents As a school, we aim to work closely with parents in the education of their daughters. Parents can contact the school by or by telephone. We offer feedback to parents on their daughter s progress and attainment each term; there is an annual At Home (Parents consultation evening), a full written report and an interim report. The dates of these reports are scheduled to give feedback to different year groups at the optimum time. Many communications are sent out by including the weekly newsletter. The website is also a useful source of information.

5 KEHS I 03 The Curriculum Key Stage 3 In the Thirds to the Upper Fourth, the first three years, girls are offered a broad and balanced curriculum which includes: Art, Biology, Chemistry, German, Spanish, Latin, Drama, English, French, Geography, History, Mathematics, Music, Physical Education, Physics, Religious Studies. In addition, there are two bespoke courses designed to support KEHS girls, to broaden their horizons and encourage their intellectual curiosity: Personal Decision Making: this includes study skills, health education, relationships, business and finance, citizenship, relaxation and self-defence. Digital Learning and Technology. Key Stage 4 In the Lower and Upper Fifth, girls study a strong academic core of subjects to GCSE including English Language and Literature, Mathematics, separate Sciences and a Modern Foreign Language. They can select three or four options from a range of subjects. All girls follow an Enrichment Programme in the Lower Fifth and have the opportunity to undertake an Extended Project qualification. The school is dedicated to offering a curriculum to prepare girls for further education and employment.

Please note that application to King Edward VI High School for Girls does not count as one of the choices on your Local Education Authority Application Form. The selection process consists of the entrance examination and consideration of the reference from each girl s current school. Entrance Examinations at Age 11 Examination Date: Friday 5th October 2018 (Girls born between 1st September 2007 and 31st August 2008 are eligible) Closing date for applications: Monday 24th September 2018 for entry in September 2019 Girls will sit papers in Mathematics and English. The order and length of papers is subject to alteration.

7 KEHS I 05 English Papers Both English papers are designed to test reading and writing skills and to explore a candidate s potential. In the past, poems, pictures and passages of prose have appeared on the papers for candidates to examine. Tasks have included comprehension type questions, creative writing and an opportunity to respond personally to the stimulus material. Candidates are given time at the beginning of each examination to read through and are advised to spend this time familiarising themselves with the material, the questions and the instructions on the paper. They should aim to answer questions as fully as possible. Mathematics Paper The paper consists of a series of questions of varying lengths, which are designed to test the candidate s ability to use and apply the straightforward processes of arithmetic. No calculators of any kind are allowed. Formal knowledge of algebra and geometry is not required. Some questions are deliberately designed to test responses to a simple but unfamiliar mathematical idea for which no previous knowledge is required. It is emphasised that candidates should show their working clearly, and not assume that it is only the answer which is of interest to the examiner. General Information All papers are designed to be accessible to any girl performing well at Key Stage 2. We are not looking for what a candidate has been taught, but rather what they might be able to achieve, and are aware of the diverse educational experiences of our candidates. All examinations are set and marked by staff at the school and each girl s scripts are discussed and considered thoroughly before offers are made. Every year, there are more able girls sitting the examination than we have places available, and some girls will be placed on our waiting list. Girls must have reached the age of 11 years by 31 August following the examination. Girls younger than this can be considered in some circumstances; parents of such girls are asked to communicate with the Principal in the previous Autumn Term. The school will do its best to accommodate potential candidates who have particular needs of any kind. In the first instance, families are asked to make an individual approach to the Principal. Entry at Ages (Years 8-11) Places are sometimes available for girls in Years 8 11 (Lower and Upper Fourth and Lower and Upper Fifth). We offer these on the basis of performance in entrance examinations. Further information is available from the Registrar.

8 Fees, Assisted Places and Scholarships FEES Fees are payable not later than the first day of each term and can be paid termly or monthly by Direct Debit. The termly tuition fees for the school year 2017/2018 are 4, ( 12, per annum). The fees for the school year 2018/2019 will be published in June FINANCIALLY ASSISTED PLACES The Governors Assisted Places Scheme aims to ensure girls who would benefit from an education at KEHS can come to the school irrespective of parental income. The scheme is means-tested and parents wishing to apply for fee remission must complete and return a statement of income annually. Funds are not yet sufficient to provide assistance to every applicant who performs well in the examination. As a result, not all applicants for an Assisted Place who are offered a place will be successful in securing financial assistance. Awards are always made in line with the published scale of fees; partial awards are not made. Awards are made on the basis of performance in the Entrance Examination. It is also possible to combine Assisted Places awards and Scholarships for exceptional candidates. Further information is available from the School Registrar. SCHOLARSHIPS Although the Governors are principally committed to supporting the means-tested Assisted Places scheme, the school offers academic scholarships to recognise the girls who excel in our 11+ and 16+ entrance examinations. Academic Scholarships are awarded on the basis of the results of the Entrance Examination to girls entering at age 11 at the discretion of the Principal. These scholarships are independent of parental income and are normally tenable for 7 years. For the academic year 2018/2019, 25 scholarships were offered. Music Scholarships Musically gifted girls can apply for an audition for a Music Scholarship. Applications for the Music Scholarship must be made before the registration closing date. Musical ability is determined by performance in an audition and at interview.

10 Extra-curricular Activities Developing other interests outside the classroom is important to us as we aim to offer girls a rounded education. There is a very full programme of extra-curricular activities, some run by Sixth Form girls and some run jointly with King Edward s School. The school has an exchange programme with schools in Canada and New Zealand. SPORT/PHYSICAL RECREATION Teams in hockey, netball, tennis and rounders regularly play inter-school fixtures on weekday evenings and most Saturday mornings. There are badminton, swimming, life saving, fitness, football, kickboxing, rowing, fencing and gymnastics clubs. Senior and junior dance workshops prepare an annual production. MUSIC Weekly activities provide opportunities for any girl to take part in some music making whatever her level of musical achievement. They include Wind Band, Concert Band, Symphony Orchestra, Concert Orchestra, String Orchestra, Jazz Band, Chamber Music, Choral Society and Junior Choir. Regular concerts are given in the Concert Hall of the stunning Sir Paul and Lady Ruddock Performing Arts Centre; the highlights of the school year are the Christmas and Summer Concerts as well as regular music evenings & Performance Platforms. DRAMA In addition to the ever popular annual Junior and Senior productions, there are several drama clubs which meet regularly and stage more informal presentations. A Stage Crew option for Sixth Formers also provides opportunities for theatre design, set construction, lighting, props, costume, publicity and stage management. A well equipped drama studio in the Ruddock Performing Arts Centre allows for workshop style productions. Recent Senior productions have included A Christmas Carol (2016), The Lion, The Witch & The Wardrobe (2015), Wuthering Heights (2016) Much Ado About Nothing (2017), West Side Story and A Winter s Tale. Junior Productions have included The Witches, The Crysalids and Alice in Wonderland.

12 THE DUKE OF EDINBURGH AWARD SCHEME Many girls take part in a range of school organised practical activities and expeditions which enable them to qualify for Duke of Edinburgh Awards at all levels. EXPEDITIONS AND TRIPS Expeditions of various kinds form an important part of school life both in term time and during the school holidays. These include theatre trips, visits to places of historical, geographical, scientific or classical interest, ski trips, tours of art galleries, treks and outdoor challenges. If a trip is considered to be of importance for an external examination, the school will offer a subsidy to those on an Assisted Place on request. COMMUNITY SERVICE A wide variety of awareness raising and fundraising events are organised by girls to support charities of their choice. In addition, Senior girls give practical help with projects in the local community and run community events in school for the elderly and for young children. Transport King Edward VI High School for Girls is well placed for girls to use public transport with buses from the city centre and trains coming into Birmingham University Station, conveniently located approximately 10 minutes walk from school. There are also special buses daily from and to Solihull (via Acocks Green and Moseley) and Walsall (via Scott Arms, Great Barr).
