2 District heating all over Aarhus On the city map of Aarhus inside this folder, the entire district heating network of the municipal district heating company Affald- Varme Aarhus has been made visible in brown colour. The total length of this network is 2,000 km. District heating was introduced in the centre of Aarhus in 1928 and has grown ever since. Today suburbs and villages are supplied as well. Part of the present system is seven cooperatively owned district heating companies. Totally 95% of the heat market in the municipality with 315,000 inhabitants is covered. Outside the municipality another four cooperatives serve four towns. Altogether the district heating system has some 77,000 customers, who may be owners of a one-family house- or for example the City Hall. Modern suburban housing without chimneys. Old houses in the city. The roofs have been renovated. Chimneys belong to the past. The open air museum Den Gamle By exhibits 75 historical houses with gardens, shops and workshops and tells the story of past Danish towns. The old chimneys are still in place but out of operation, as also this part of Aarhus is heated by district heating - an invisible anachronism to the benefit of the environment. Heating Plan Aarhus The red lines on the map indicate the superior heat transmission network supplying heat from the major heat producers. This network covers the entire region around Aarhus, and Heating Plan Aarhus - a joint organization operating the entire system - was established to build and run this large system. Recycling of waste has high priority. However, combustible waste that cannot be reused must be incinerated. This plant converts waste into valuable heat and power without jeopardizing the environment.

Had there been no district heating in the city, the fish in the bay - instead of people in Aarhus - would have had a warmer environment. The large share of combined heat and power (93%) enables the exploitation of heat which would otherwise have been cooled off to the environment. In addition, waste and biomass are used to an increasing extent. Therefore, the consumption of fossil fuels relating to heat production is limited to about 954,3813 GWh. If the district heating customers had had their own oil or gas boilers instead, the use of fossil fuels and the emission of CO 2 would have been about twice as much - a little more with oil burners, and a little less with natural gas burners. The CO 2 emission of 2011 is 360,193 tons. On the next pages, you will find short descriptions and photos of some of the heat-producing plants supplying Heating Plan Aarhus, and you will see their location on the big map inside. A vision for 2030 Aarhus Municipality has set the goal to reduce emissions in order to make the city CO 2 -neutral by In 2011 the city council passed a new Climate-adapted Heating Plan. This plan will eliminate the use of coal and oil, increase use of renewable energy and improve energy efficiency. The basis is available in the shape of a well developed district heating infrastructure. The waste incineration plant works as a CHP plant which produces heat and power by incinerating waste, primarily from the city of Aarhus. Therefore, this plant is for both waste management and CHP. The waste incineration plant delivers 17 % of the district heating and by that replaces heat production with fossil fuels.

4 The Queen s local palace Marselisborg is heated with district heating. A modern district heating installation is very compact and can be located in an ordinary cupboard. This unit allows for connection to the district heating system (left), cold and hot water (middle) and floor heating (right). The largest of 47 heat exchanger stations connecting the high-pressure transmission network with the distribution networks. This plant with a total capacity of 200 MW heat is situated at the edge of the city centre. In the western outskirts of Aarhus, three straw-fired plants are operated by local farmers. Find them in Sabro, Harlev and Solbjerg. The picture shows the plant in Sabro with its large barn for storing straw bales under dry conditions.

Photo: Press photo Aarhus University Hospital During the period up to 2020, Aarhus University Hospital expands with new hospital buildnings of 32,000 m 2. The total area of Aarhus University Hospital will then be 216,000 m 2 - a whole hospital city. The large construction consists of low energy buildings and will have a district heating system which will be able to make use of any surplus energy from the construction s cooling system. Seven private cooperatives operate district heating plants in Løgten-Skødstrup, Lystrup (the picture), Vejlby, Holme-Lundshøj, Rundhøj, Tranbjerg and Malling. Outside the municipality, other cooperatives supply district heating in Hornslet, Odder, Hørning and Skanderborg. This heat accumulator tank is able to balance generation of power and heat with demand over a period of time. The accumulator contains 30,000 m 3 of water and has a capacity of 2,070 MWh. 6 Samsø Samsø is Denmark s Renewable Energy Island and is situated not far from Aarhus. The 4,100 inhabitants already enjoy self-sufficiency in energy supply. On the island four district heating plants supply 900 houses in six villages with heat produced by local renewable energy resources. Between Nordby and Maarup, a plant operates on wood chips (75%) from local forestry and solar heating (25%). Onsbjerg is heated with district heating produced on shredded straw. Tranebjerg is the main village on the island. The plant burns whole bales of straw. Brundby and Ballen are supplied from a station operated on shredded straw. In addition, 11 wind turbines on the island and 10 off shore generate more electricity than used on the island. The surplus is transmitted to the main land and exceeds the total consumption of fossil fuels used for transportation at and to Samsø. All plants are strongly supported by the society on Samsø. Local ownership and engagement of local craftsmen are important issues. Samsø Energy Academy is the knowledge resource centre where know-how and hands-on experience are organized and mediated. 7 District Heating in Denmark Thanks to widespread use of district heating, Denmark s use of fossil fuels for heating is limited. This means less emission of CO 2. 60% of all homes covered More than 1,5 million homes - be that flats in multi-storey houses or single-family houses - are supplied by hot water for heating and for preparation of hot sanitary water. In addition, a large number of public and private buildings such as hospitals, schools, offices and commercial buildings take district heating as the obvious choice. Increasing use of non-fossil fuels Any kind of energy resource is used. So far, local resources like solar energy, straw and wood as well as household waste and waste heat from industry are exploited. The share of this type of fuel is increasing. Less than half the amount of fuel is needed for heat generation when it takes place in combination with power generation. In addition and to an increasing extent, non-fossil, CO 2 -neutral fuels are applied in these plants. Low temperatures Typically, Danish district heating is operated at low temperatures - often below 70 C in the outgoing pipeline and about 40 C in the return. Low temperatures mean low heat loss, and attempts to reduce temperatures are currently going on. Large and small Denmark has more than 450 plants throughout the country. The smallest systems have less than hundred customers, while others are integrated in large, regional systems as in Aarhus.
