2 Beloved friends! We just returned to Tanzania after ten days in Denmark. Torkild s father of 98 years was called home to the heavenly mansions. He had had a good and long life and had not being bothered by sickness. What happened was that one day he suddenly felt ill and he was hospitalized. Three days later he passed away. He had been living in his own house to the end. He had been praying that his life would end in his own house and this wish came true. The pastor used the song in his funeral speech, which moved us tremendously. While in Denmark we were so privileged to celebrate the birthday of our son Christian s oldest child in their home. It was the first time we were able to celebrate him, so it was a great day for us all. We love our children and our children-in-law and we are pleased whenever we are able to be with them. Over Christmas we had to joy that our youngest daughter Dorrit came to visit us. 3 It is very difficult to reach Muslim families, but through the children the church has received a unique entrance to the homes. Hungering Children also supports another preschool class in the slum of Arusha. In this region the chil-dren are from extremely poor backgrounds. It is the rule more than the exception that children do not attend school. one week of vacation with her and Mirjam. We really enjoyed just the four of us to be able to reminisce the days when they were small and when we packed up all our things in a container and moved to Tanzania. The church in the slum managed to help many local poor children be enrolled in preschool class and later on to continue their schooling in public school. Over the years, this ministry has made it possible for several hundred children to continue in the school system. Hungering Children also supports orphans with tuition. This year they dedicated a new home for vulnerable children. Visit from Hungering Children, Mariager, Denmark We are pleased to co-operate with Hungering Children who help support orphans. For quite some time they have been supporting two preschool classes. One is located in a distinct Muslim town called Tanga, where 135 children are in preschool class. 95% of these are from Muslim families. The children gather in the church premises. Over the years this work has given an incredible surface of contact to the parents. The first child in the home was a 5-year-old girl by the name of Zuu. Three years ago, Zuu s father drowned in a river bed where they were digging for sand for new buildings. Mission blandt børn og unge i Tanzania April
4 Unfortunately, she also lost her mother recently. One morning the mother fell dead in the bathroom, only 27 years old. Zuu could not understand why so many people came to say goodbye to her mother. She kept saying, Mom is just resting; she will soon wake up. Poor little girl. Fortunately, a sweet neighbour lady helped her after her mother s death. Later on Zuu moved in with her old grandmother who lives in the slum. But her grandmother cannot manage to look after her grandchild. The new home that Hungering Children started in March will be Zuu s new home. The place is in the same village like our school, and Zuu will begin preschool there. Director of the home is a lovely couple who will take good care of her and show her the love of God, so that she grow up and feel safe. The School We now have 128 students in the school, praise God! The school has been built very well by our own building team who is doing an amazing job. All equipment is imported from Denmark, which enhances the quality. The Danish organization DMR-U sponsored the shipment of a container, so we do not have to buy any desks, chairs, computers, blackboards etc., as these things were collected for us in Denmark. Crusade in Mukoka village Torkild and the team have been away for a children s crusade at the beginning of the new year. Our first crusade this year was a great encouragement to the small church. A somewhat older pastor by the name of Sintoo had begun the work in the village a couple of years before. It was the very first Pentecostal church in the region. He experienced a lot of resistance. Few people wanted to be Christians and he felt like giving up. The pastor turned to God and said, Why did you send me to this village when no one wants to believe in you? He heard a voice answering: Wait and see. There will be a revival among children and youth in this place. One night during the crusade after we had shown the film The Cross and the Switchblade 50 children and youth came forward and bowed their knees in the grass. They wanted to accept Jesus as their Lord and Saviour. What a beautiful and holy night. The old Pastor Zintoo cried like a baby as this was the fulfilment of the promise he had received from God: Wait and see, there will be a revival among children and youth. All honour to Jesus. 4
5 A minibus with 13 passengers had collided with a truck. All died then and there. Torkild said that only the wheels were left on the bus. Whenever Torkild is away, I always pray for angels to surround him. Thank you for your faithful prayers! Mswakini Juu News from Masai land, written by Mirjam. Thank you so much for your prayers for us and for the ministry We are well into the new year and in full swing at Mswakini. I had expected to begin building the health centre for the clinic in January, but this did not happen! On their way home to Arusha, Torkild and the team passed by a terrible accident, which happened a few hours before they arrived. Just before Christmas the village chief along with some leaders came to Arusha to ask for our help to obtain a diesel engine for a large water pump that provides the population with clean potable water. Hjælp et barn i Tanzania Børnehaveklasse 1. til 7. klasse Secondary skole for 220 kr. om måneden for 250 kr. om måneden for 300 kr. om måneden The old engine was total worn out (it was from the 1970 s) and therefore the people had not had any clean potable water for a long time. The alternative is a small lake, which unfortunately is almost dried out. Mission blandt børn og unge i Tanzania April
6 The lake water is very polluted and many of the women had to walk very far to get water about 19 kilometers each way just to get a bucket of water (20 liters). We promised the chief that we would do our best to help, but could not guarantee anything as a new diesel engine is very expensive. But as usual God was faithful. In the course of two weeks He had miraculously provided the money for a new engine, which was bought just before the end of Most of January went by trying to connect the new diesel engine with the present pump. It was not an easy job as there is not electricity in the area and we had to take generator, welding plant etc. with us from Arusha to the bush. THANK YOU for remembering us in prayers for rain. So far we have not received any. It is important so that they can start to plant their fields. In February we started the doctor s house. It is necessaru to complete it quickly because without a house, no doctor, which means that the clinic cannot be opened. Construction is proceeding really well. The only thing missing is to put up ceilings and doors and finally the painting job then the house is ready for use. I am so excited that God opened up this opportunity. For years I prayed for it to happen. Workers spent a lot of time trying to mount the diesel engine, and they were constantly delayed because of wild and dangerous animals in the area, including a lot of elephants. I was there when they tested the new system. Praise God, we got water! Great joy and excitement among the Masai s as the water gushed out! - and not the least among the women. They no longer have to walk for hours on end to get water. Such joy to all of us - I shout and cheer with the entire village! The chief was so happy that he killed a goat and celebrated with the work team. We are very privileged to have a container on its way from Denmark with hospital equipment for the new clinic. My parents and I really look forward to Project Clinic, which hopefully is going to save a lot of lives. Thank you friends for your great love and care for the Maasai. May God reward your faithfullness. Peace and love from Mirjam 6
