3 Welcome to the international auction 776 at Bruun Rasmussen Old masters and 19th century painting In consequence of the rising internationalisation of the auction market, Bruun Rasmussen s latest catalogue was issued in English. This initiative was very well received, and therefore the catalogues of traditional paintings, antiques and decorative art will also be published in English now. Please note, however, that all texts will be available in Danish at Furthermore, as always our staff is ready to answer questions within the daily opening hours of the house. The atmosphere of Italy The auction will commence with a number of interesting landscapes, seascapes and portraits from the Skagen area of Denmark. From the northern light of Skagen we go south to enjoy the atmosphere of Italy. Like countless times before, Bruun Rasmussen has reserved a section of this auction for a specific theme, and in this instance the theme is Italy. One cannot overestimate Italy s immense significance for Danish art in the 19th century. A vast majority of Danish artists would travel to Italy at least once in a lifetime many of them packing a gold medal from the Royal Academy of Fine Arts. They mostly visited Northern Italy, Rome and the districts surrounding Naples and Capri where they became part of the international community of artists. To the many Scandinavian artists in Rome in the first part of the 19th century, this city s uncrowned king of the artists, i.e. Bertel Thorvaldsen, was a figure of tremendous importance as a source of inspiration and as a natural centre of artistic exchanges as well social activities. The Italians were also very important to the visiting artists, although they primarily served as models for romantic genre pieces in which they were bestowed an immediacy and originality that fell in well with the Romanticist view of the world. The auction presents an opportunity to take a pleasurable walk through an abundance of Italian ambiences. The Johan Rohde collection The Danish artist, designer and art critic, Johan Rohde, was a crucial figure in the Danish art world around the year His son, art historian H.P. Rohde, also made lasting contributions to the history of Danish art. The latter died in 2005, and the present auction includes several important works by Johan Rohde from H.P. Rohde s collection. Read more on page 56. The L.P. Larsen collection A major inheritance allowed Lauritz Poul Larsen to build a fine collection of Danish paintings a collection that comprised all the painters of the golden age in Danish art. His collection is mentioned in Kunst I Privat Eje (vol. 1), 1944: The collection belonging to L.P. Larsen ( ) is characteristic of the collections that were formed around the turn of the century [around 1900] and reflected a true understanding of Danish painting in the 19th century. A part of this unique collection is now for sale. We hope you will enjoy the catalogue!

6 Velkommen til den internationale auktion 776 hos Bruun Rasmussen Som en konsekvens af den stigende internationalisering af auktionsmarkedet udkom Bruun Rasmussens seneste katalog på engelsk. Dette initiativ blev vel modtaget, og derfor udkommer katalogerne for ældre malerier, antikviteter og kunstindustri nu på engelsk. Det skal dog understreges, at alle tekster vil være at finde på dansk på Desuden står personalet, som altid, klar til at besvare spørgsmål ved henvendelse i husets daglige åbningstid. Italienske stemninger Auktionen indledes med en række af skagensmalernes interessante landskaber, søstykker og portrætter. Fra Skagens nordlige lys drager vi sydover til de italienske himmelstrøg. Som gentagne gange før har Bruun Rasmussen reserveret en del af auktionen til et udvalgt tema, og denne gang gælder det Italien. Italiens enorme betydning for dansk kunst i 1800-tallet kan ikke overvurderes. Her rejste langt de fleste danske kunstnere til Italien mindst en gang i deres liv ofte med Kunstakademiets store guldmedalje i bagagen. De besøgte især Norditalien, Rom og områderne omkring Napoli og Capri, hvor de blev en del af det internationale kunstnermiljø. For de mange skandinaviske kunstnere i Rom i første halvdel af 1800-tallet havde stadens ukronede kunstnerkonge, Bertel Thorvaldsen, umådelig betydning som inspirator og omdrejningspunkt for kunstnerisk udveksling såvel som selskabelig aktivitet. Også italienerne havde stor betydning for de tilrejsende kunstnere, omend de først og fremmest tjente som modeller til sværmeriske genremotiver, hvor de tillagdes en umiddelbar oprindelighed, som gik godt i tråd med det romantiske verdensbillede. Auktionen giver mulighed for en sand lystvandring i italienske stemninger. Johan Rohdes samling Den danske billedkunstner, designer og kunstkritiker, Johan Rohde, var en central skikkelse i dansk kunstliv omkring år Også hans søn, kunsthistorikeren H.P. Rohde, satte et væsentligt fingeraftryk på dansk kunsthistorie. Sidstnævnte døde i 2005, og på auktionen sælges flere værker af Johan Rohde fra H.P. Rohdes samling. Læs mere på side 56. L.P. Larsens samling En stor arv satte Lauritz Poul Larsen i stand til at opbygge en fin samling af malerkunst, der rummede værker af alle de danske guldaldermalere. Samlingen omtales i "Kunst i Privat Eje", bind I, 1944: "Kontorchef L.P. Larsens Samling er karakteristisk for de Samlinger, der dannedes omkring Aarhundredeskiftet ( årh.), og som prægedes af et virkeligt Kendskab til det 19. Aarhundredes danske Malerkunst". En del af den unikke samling realiseres nu på auktionen. God fornøjelse!

8 Johan Rohde The Unity of Art By Gertrud Hvidbjerg-Hansen and Gertrud Oelsner Last year marked the 150th anniversary of Johan Rohde s birth, but the scope and coherence of his comprehensive production of paintings, furniture, silver and book-craft has remained largely unknown, even though Rohde was arguably one of the most crucial figures in Danish art, applied art and art criticism around the turn of the previous century. The Free Exhibition Johan Rohde ( ) was originally trained as a medical doctor, but relatively late in life he decided to pursue a career as an artist. After taking private lessons for a few years he succeeded in being accepted at the Academy of Fine Arts in Among young artists at that time there was great dissatisfaction with education offered by the Academy and with the censored exhibitions held at Charlottenborg. Young artist felt that the established art was stagnant and out of step with the modern currents that were coming to the fore abroad. Therefore, many of these young artists sought admission to The Artists Free Study School where P.S. Krøyer and Lauritz Tuxen taught with inspiration from modern French art. Rohde spent the years from 1883 to 1887 at this school, and it was here his pictorial talent was developed. Later, Rohde became a teacher at the school and he taught a number of the artists that, in time, would represent early Danish modernism. These include Oluf Høst, Olaf Rude, William Scharff as well as Edvard Weie. The ever increasing dissatisfaction with the exhibitions at Charlottenborg where young artists of modernist orientation were not allowed to exhibit led to the establishment of The Free Exhibition in Along with Vilhelm Hammershøi, Th. Philipsen, J.F. Willumsen and Agnes and Harald Slott- Møller, Rohde was one of the main initiators behind the founding of this association, and for many years it was very much Rohde who was the driving force behind the activities of The Free. In 1893 Rohde and Philipsen managed to create an exhibition of Vincent van Gogh s and Paul Gauguin s works. This was many years before these painters achieved substantial international recognition, and for young Danish artists this exhibition proved extremely significant. Johan Rohde: "Selvportræt" (c. 1890). Den Hirschsprungske Samling. Travels in Europe As of the late 19th century, travels, exhibitions and journals began to give Danish artists a very good impression of the latest currents in especially French and German art. Johan Rohde was among the artists whose entire artistic efforts were strongly influenced by international currents. For example, his contribution to the founding of The Free Exhibition must be considered within the context of similar initiatives across Europe where artists would form free and independent associations in opposition to tradition-bound academies.

9 In 1887 Rohde travelled to Paris, the most important city in the European art world at the time, but notably his later travels had a major impact on his own work as an artist. Shortly after the foundation of The Free Exhibition, Rohde set out on a longer journey to The Netherlands, Belgium, Paris, London and Northern Italy. Rohde profited immensely from this journey. His encounter with the older European art was further intensified by the experience of being confronted with an entirely ground-breaking expression in contemporary art especially French symbolists such as Paul Gauguin, Maurice Denis, Vincent van Gogh and Felix Valloton were to serve as guiding stars for Rohde in the course of his later work. Johan Rohde s close ties to the symbolism of the 1890 s is most striking in his soulful and silent landscapes in which canals and rivers, boats and bridges, buildings and vegetation are depicted in the changing light of the twilight hour. These are sensed landscapes that could justifiably be interpreted as evocative of personal moods, inscribed in an ornamental sequence of lines and in simplified and decorative forms. He found his motifs in Holland, van Gogh s native country, but when he returned to Denmark, he found motifs of similar quality in the flatlands of Ribe, Fanoe and Karup, and in canal and harbour scenes at e.g. Christianshavn and in his hometown Randers areas that probably reminded him of the canals in Venice and Amsterdam. The Unity of Art Johan Rohde s work features a number of references to Danish and international art and arts and crafts, references that derive from his travels in Denmark and abroad. No matter what material and what kind of object he worked with, Rohde seems to have wanted to purify the artistic idiom. Although he never endeavoured to create a sheer Gesamtkunstwerk, the total interplay of the arts, his works clearly bespeak an artistic ideal that we are perhaps more familiar with under names such as Symbolism and Art Nouveau. The motifs of his paintings carry traces of the man-made world bridges, houses, ships and ruins from Antiquity as well as traces of the organic and decorative forms of nature. The arched bridges in Rohde s landscapes are repeated in the curves of his furniture. The depiction of houses in the paintings assumes cubic shapes, not unlike the drawers in Rohde s commodes. The column motifs and volutes in the paintings recur as a classical element of his furniture and silver design. All these multifarious impulses intertwine in Rohde s work. Together, the symbolist, the flowing, the classical, the textural, the formal and the ethereal modes of expression constitute the core of Rohde s highly personal idiom an idiom that had the unity of art as ideal. Gertrud Hvidberg-Hansen is keeper at Odense City Museums, and along with Gertrud Oelsner, keeper at Storstrøm Art Museum, she organised last year s Rohde exhibition, ARS UNA (The Unity of Art), at Funen Art Museum. For this exhibition they issued a publication on Rohde and his work under this very title. The exhibition, from which a number of items are now offered for sale, was later presented at the Bröhan- Museum in Berlin. Bruun Rasmussen s international auction no 776 consists of two catalogues, the first part with paintings and the second part with applied art. Works by Johan Rohde from the collection of his son, the late H.P. Rohde, will be represented in both catalogues. In this catalogue the works are lot numbers

Roman Charity or Caritas Romana is the story of a daughter, Pero, who secretly breastfeeds her father, Cimon, after he is incarcerated and sentenced to death by starvation. She is found out by a jailer, but her act of selflessness impresses officials and wins her father's release. DKK Agostino Verrocchi, or his circle, 17th century Still life with flowers and fruit. Unsigned. Oil on canvas. 83 x 156 cm. Agostino Verrocchi ( ) was active in Rome in the first half of the 17th century. He was forgotten for many years in the history of art, but in the recent years he has regained a deserved reputation as one of the finest exponents of the Italian still life painting of this period. The composition in the painting with the many fruits - strawberry trees, fig trees, quinces, grapes, peaches, lemons and pears arranged between roses, dahlias and peach flowers - is strongly held together by the forceful rendering of the light. The foreground is accentuated and the richness of detail in the fruits is in perfect harmony with the depth created by the interplay between light and shadow - chiaro scuro. Though unsigned the painting is in both style and quality very close to works that can be attributed to Verrocchi with absolute certainty. Enclosed is a paper by the Italian art historian Daniela Di Castro analysing the painting and pointing out several characteristics linking it to the style of Verrocchi. Provenance: The collection of the late Hans Henning Schrøder, Consul General. Bought in St. Petersburg shortly after Worldwar I. when Schrøder was stationed here as a diplomat. While studying in Düsseldorf Elisabeth Jerichau Baumann dreamt of Italy she left for Rome and met her future husband the sculptor Jens Adolf Jerichau. They married in Elisabeth spent long periods in their atelier in Rome when she was not travelling. The Italian carnival was a very popular theme for the Danish painters both by the Golden Age painters and their followers.
