2 It is a pleasure to invite you to the gallery's first solo exhibition with the Danish artist Christian Schmidt-Rasmussen. Heavy Dew" is both the new day and autumn with all the memories of the past and the perishable. The exhibition is closely related to, and concurrent with, the artist s exhibition "The First Morning", which can be viewed at Møstings Hus at Frederiksberg in Copenhagen. With cut and painted cardboard sculptures, Schmidt-Rasmussen has created a three-dimensional installation, where the content is that specific moment where we become parents, and where our self-image and perception of the world takes a totally new beginning. The personal mythology, the subjective memory, will eventually become a loop of past feelings and memories. A condition which continues to return to the starting point, and which mutates into the future. Heavy Dew", consists of a series of paintings, where Schmidt-Rasmussen s focus is moved to the relationship between fathers and sons. The figures in the paintings are predominantly androgynous; we find ourselves somewhere beyond the notion of gender. They are in a so-called arcadian landscape, a paradoxical place, where animals and humans live in harmony together. The instrument Aulos with the two whistles, known from the ancient Dionysos cult, plays up to ecstatic dance, and nobody really knows what's going on, as everything is dazzling new and unknown. The place and time of the narrations are difficult to place; this makes them seem universal. Thus they take the shape of any beginning. Many of the works radiate with a crystallised flicker of light, ornamentation and surreal colours, of twinkling suns and cyclical formations. It is as if the actors are involved in rites of passages of an unknown culture, ceremonial initiations or purifications. A central painting titled "The First Dance" shows a figure dancing naked in an exploding flower bloom. Whether the dance describes the fundamental change which takes place when becoming a parent, or the uncertainty of eventually being abandoned is unclear. Another painting "Leaving Home, depicts three boys floating over a derelict sailboat without mast. This emblematic work seems to underscore our fragility and reference change as events and experiences shape our everyday lives. Christian Schmidt-Rasmussen (born 1963) is a visual artist who lives in Copenhagen. He works both with painting and poetry and is educated at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts in He has exhibited at a large number of exhibitions in Denmark and abroad recently at Overgaden, X and Beyond, Bendixen Contemporary Art, Skagen Museum, Gallery Nicolai Wallner, The Free Exhibition Building and the West Jutland Art Pavilion.
