10 Page SEASON REVIEW NOTES In what will go down as a landmark year in program history, 2003 was the season that the Aztecs not only met expectations, they exceeded them. The following is just a few of the team s highlights: SDSU started with its best ever finish at the Mountain West Conference indoor meet, jumping from sixth in 2002 to second in 2003, more than doubling its point total. The Aztecs broke eight school records in the short, five-meet indoor campaign and sent its first participant to the NCAA indoor championships since SDSU went a perfect 3-0 in outdoor meets which were scored. The Aztecs finished first at the San Diego City Championships, knocked off No. 3 UCLA to win the Cal-Nevada Championships and also claimed the title at the conference meet. SDSU won its first ever Mountain West Conference Outdoor track and field title. The Aztecs ended Brigham Young's streak of 20 consecutive outdoor titles, which was the longest active streak in the nation in the sport of women s track and field, dating back to A record six Aztecs earned All-America distinction at the NCAA outdoor championships. SDSU finished the national meet tied for 29th overall, its best finish in coach Rahn Sheffield s 12-year tenure. Newcomer Nicole Ireland made the biggest impact on the team, snaring All- America honors with her fourth-place finish at the NCAAs in the 400 hurdles and running the second leg on the eighth place 4x400 relay. A two-time MWC athlete of the week, she was a five-time event winner (100 hurdles, 400 hurdles, triple jump, 4x100 and 4x400 relays) at the conference meet. Heptathlete Leslie Miller capped her career by placing sixth at the NCAAs, jumping nine spots in the final day of competition. Miller became the second Aztec heptathlete in the last three years to finish in the top six at the national meet. Other highlights: Freshman Shanon Meyer won the heptathlon at the 2003 USA Junior Outdoor Track & Field Championships and was fourth at the Pan Am Junior meet... 12 MWC Meet Notes M O U N T A I N W E S T C O N F E R E N C E O U T D O O R C H A M P I O N S H I P S MWC Meet Results SDSU won its first ever Mountain West Conference title, edging reigning champion Brigham Young by 11 points. The Aztecs snapped BYU s streak of 20 consecutive outdoor titles, which was the longest active streak in the nation in the sport of track and field, dating back to The Aztecs previous best team finish was third in 2001 and 2002, after a fifth place at the inaugural meet in San Diego State overcame a 23-point deficit entering the meet's final day, winning nine of the 21 events over the four-day championship. The Aztecs used their dominance and depth in the sprint and hurdle events to overcome the BYU lead, scoring 22 points in the 400 hurdles, 25 points in the 100 meters and 27 points in the 200 meters. The Aztecs claimed all the major awards as senior Melinda Smedley was named the meet s outstanding performer and junior Nicole Ireland earned high-point honors. Shanon Meyer swept the freshman of the year award at both the outdoor and indoor meets and SDSU s Rahn Sheffield was named the conference coach of the year for the second time in the last three seasons. In her first career MWC meet, junior Nicole Ireland won five events, claiming three individual tiles and playing a part on both of the team's first-place relays. Ireland won the triple jump with an NCAA regional qualifying leap of , a team season-best which ranks fifth in SDSU history. Ireland then swept both the hurdle events, finishing the 400-meter race in after recording a stadium record of in the 100 hurdles. Melinda Smedley placed first in the 100 meters for the second straight year, setting a conference record and tying a school record. She also pulled off double duty with a win in the 200 meters, after taking second in the event the previous two years. Aztec senior Leslie Miller kicked off the competition by successfully defending her title in the heptathlon, tallying a career best and NCAA automatic point total of 5,602. Freshman Shanon Meyer just missed the automatic NCAA cut, jumping from third to second place in the final day of competition with 5,481 points. Meyer's point total was a career best by almost 300 points, as she would also go on to claim a first place in the long jump with the sixth-best leap in school history of Other highlights for the Aztecs included top-three finishes by Tonette Dyer in the 100 and 200, Jini Hogg in the 400, Shayla Balentine in the pole vault and Megan Schauermann in the triple jump.
