Governor Brit Haave has served in spite of personal difficulties. We want to thank her for her Zonta work and wish her all the best in the future. We also extend our gratitude to District-treasurer Fjóla, who has amazed us by the way she has talked about accounts and budgets as were they the most exiting stories. All of us have felt her great love for accounting. District-secretary Kari s job has been a difficult and energy consuming one. The secretary s work is important, because without minutes and protocols we do not know which decisions the board made or which issues they debated. So thank you for your work Kari. The AD s hold a very important position in Zonta. The workload is different because the number of clubs in the areas differs from three in Lithuania over eight and nine in Iceland and Norway to 22 in Denmark. Each of you has done a fine job and been very busy. A feeling of emptiness might catch you after your term of office is over; please remember that there are so many jobs in Zonta, which need to be done, and you have the competencies for them, please do not hesitate to put your names up for them. We hope you are walking on to interesting Zonta work. We also want to thank D-13 District webmaster, D-13 Parliamentarian and the Districtcommittee chairs for jobs well done.

2 Convention Orlando 27. juni 1. juli (Marriott Orlando World Center, Florida, USA) As of June 28, 2014 Zonta International comprises 1189 clubs in 67 countries. The newest ones are: Nepal, Lebanon, Uganda and Macau. 621 clubs were represented by delegates 474 clubs were represented by proxies 94 clubs were not represented The convention had the following participants 11 members of the International Board 9 past International Presidents (PIPs) 31 governors Other members 1374 Guests 167 Total of 1592 persons All 42 District-13 clubs were represented either by delegate or by proxy. The district had 46 votes plus governor s vote. The District-13 delegation comprised 25 delegates (15 from Denmark, 1 from Lithuania, 3 from Iceland and 6 from Norway), governor, lieutenant-governor and 12 club members. On the last day of convention Maria has invited Disrict-13 to a reception in her suite. Here we had a chance to welcome Maria as our new ZI President and wish her luck as skipper of the Zonta Yacht bound for Nice I want to express my gratitude to all of you for your interest, enthusiasm, hard work at bylaws sessions and your sense of humour. Now one task remains to be done, your report to your clubs and your adjusting of the club bylaws that they correspond with the adopted bylaws changes. On the D-13 website you can find material to help you with your reports in both English and Danish. District secretary Ruta Jasioniene is preparing a photo documentation of convention. You will find it at the district website as soon as it is ready.

3 Maria s letter to D-13 Dear all in District 13, Thank you very much for the continuous support I have received from you during the past many years and specially during the Convention in Orlando. It is a great honor, and a huge responsibility to be the first International President from District 13 and I know that this would not have been possible without your support and the support of my family. It will be my pleasure to be the Liaison to District 13 during the biennium. You know that I will be very busy this biennium, but I will do my best to be your voice at the Zonta International Board. One of my responsibilities in this role is to participate in the District Conference in 2015 and I look forward to this event. There is much to do to empower women around the world and I am convinced that we will need Conviction, Commitment and Courage. Please embrace with me the three Cs and let them be our guide for the work this biennium. Looking forward to seeing you all and to working with you. In Zonta friendship Maria Jose

4 Wellcome to Zonta work Conviction-Commitment-Courage is the motto ZI President Maria José has chosen for the biennium , the group of governors had added their motto Knowledge and Enthusiasm Yield Success. The governors call themselves the KEYS. Please remember that as district-13 governor, I will happily help you to open doors to knowledge about Zonta; feel free to ask any Zonta questions and I will try to find the answers to them. District-13 website, D-13 Newsletter, District-13 Goals Please, look at D-13 website. Webmaster Sigrún Magnúsdóttir is reviewing the site. She will update the website on a regular basis. I hope you will find it useful. Comments to the website are welcome; please forward them to webmaster or governor. News from clubs and areas are welcome. Each number of D-13 Newsletter will have a special message from one of the district committee chairs or appointees. I am happy to tell you that Anne Kühnell, ZC Roskilde has accepted the job as District-13 Service Committee chair as well as the position as District Foundation Ambassador. The position was vacant during Anne looks forward to working with areas and clubs. Please read her own introduction below. The district board has adopted the goals for District goals shall be within the framework of ZI Goals. Area and club goals shall be within the district goals framework. It is worthwhile remembering Maria José words. Her advice is to go for a piece of the cake, not for the whole one. Please select your goals carefully. You will find the District-13 Goals at the district webpage in both English and Danish. Zonta International Foundation (ZIF) In 1984, delegates to the Zonta International Convention in Sydney, Australia voted to establish the Zonta International Foundation. The foundation was incorporated a year later, in 1985, as a 501 (c) (3) charitable organization under the United States Internal Revenue Code. The Zonta International Foundation is an independent organization governed by the Zonta International Board of Directors. Zonta International is the Corporate Member of the Foundation. Zonta International Foundationis a not-for profit, charitable organization supported solely by contributions form Zonta clubs, Zontians and friends of Zonta around the world who share a commitment to advancing the status of women worldwide. Membership dues collected by Zonta International support the operating expenses of Zonta International Foundation. Contributions to ZIF go entirely to service projects, program support, and development. The goal for is to collect 5,302,000 USD

5 District Foundation Ambassador Anne Kühnell writes I am honored after 10 years of membership in Zonta to have the opportunity to take the role of District-13 Foundation Ambassador for The District Foundation Ambassador position is specifically created to help each Zontian understand the mission of Zonta International Foundation. Returning from Zonta Convention in Orlando my starting points will be the following: 1. Work closely with Governor Eva Nielsen to develop an action plan for promoting the Foundation within our District. 2. Promote awareness of the Foundation s purpose, accomplishments, programs, service goals, and charitable gift opportunities. 3. Promote the Foundation in our District Newsletter, at special events or wherever appropriate to the District. 4. Communicate with Club Presidents and members. I have special focus on getting D13 on the World-Map during by focusing on: Support President Maria Jose Landeira Oestergaard s Projects for In Denmark, co-operate with LOKK. The National organization of women s shelters in Denmark is a non-governmental humanitarian organization a union of 42 women s shelters and counselling centers in Denmark. Help influencing the politicians and governments in general to strengthen the role of women. Encouraging and support local service Projects focused on Zonta s mission. Make public presentations and work with volunteers if required. Finding a simple and effective way to encourage all members to make a gift to the Foundation. 6 A Message to all D-13 clubs: district-board needs your response Item 1 District-13 Board asks for your help regarding our next District Conference. District-13 Board and District Conference Committee chaired by Lisbeth Deleuran ZC Vejle are spending time, thoughts and energy arranging a profitable District Conference September at LEGOLAND Hotel and Conference. In D-13 Newsletter no 1, we outlined our preliminary thoughts. It is our hope that many of you will register for the District Conference. We have many ideas, but before we make decisions, we want to listen to you. We would appreciate to know which issues you and your club would find important, interesting, and worthwhile spending conference time on. Please have a debate at a club meeting or electronically and forward your ideas to Governor no later than November 1, If your programme is already overloaded, please make the club board meet and debate, or invite members to participate in a late afternoon meeting on your way home. Please, structure the issues under the following headlines Zonta International, the organization, structure, Bylaws etc. Zonta District-13, the organization, structure, rules of procedure etc. The Objects and goals of Zonta International during and how we can help reaching the goals District-13 advocacy and service projects Anything else Please also give us a hint if you want to listen to lectures about the issues, to discuss them in Open Forum or work with them in a workshop. At this time, I have a preliminary promise from Zonta International President Maria José and Chair of ZI Advocacy Committee PIP Margit Webjörn to participate. We will remember the Beijing Plan of Action, the Millennium Development goals, which expire However, our focus will be on what will come next, as well as where Zonta comes in. You will hear more about this. By the way, have you heard that LEGO in August will release Ellen Kooijman s Female Minifigure set, featuring three female scientists, entitled Research Institute? Distriktsstyret beder om klubbernes hjælp til at planlægge den næste distriktskonference. Både distriktsstyret og konference komiteen under ledelse af Lisbeth Deleuran, ZC Vejle arbejder hårdt med at arrangere den næste distrikts konference, der finder sted september 2015 i LEGOLAND, HOTEL og KONFERENCE, således at den bliver både spændende og udbytterig. Læs om vore tanker i D-13 Newsletter nummer 1, som I finder på distriktets website. Det er vores håb, at rigtig mange vil deltage i konferencen. Vi har rigtig mange ideer, men før vi træffer bindende beslutninger, vil vi gerne høre hvad klubberne synes, at tiden på konferencen skal bruges til. Derfor beder vi om, at I snakker om det på et klubmøde eller via nettet og sender besked til governor senest den 1. november Hvis I ikke kan presse det ind i jeres allerede lagte program, så overvej at lave et gå

7 hjem møde, hvor I drøfter det. Eller klub bestyrelsen kan drøfte det på et møde. Vi beder jeg samle jeres ønsker under disse punkter ZI organisation og struktur, Bylaws etc. D-13 organisation, struktur, regler etc. ZI mål og programmer for , hvordan kan vi hjælpe med, at målene bliver nået D-13 advocacy og service projekter Alt andet vedr. Zonta og Zontas arbejde. Bemærk også venligst om I ønsker emnerne belyst gennem et foredrag, eller taget op i Åbent Forum eller om I ønsker, at der skal arbejdes med dem i workshops. Jeg har et foreløbigt tilsagn fra Maria om at deltage. Det samme gælder også PIP Margit Webjörn, der er formand for den internationale advocacy komite. Vi kommer til at arbejde med de planer, der var et resultat af FNs kvindekonferencer, men også med de nye mål. Har I for resten hørt, at der kommer et nyt Lego sæt på markedet til august? Det hedder Forsknings laboratoriet, og figurerne tre kvindelige forskere. Item 2 District-13 statutes All of you know that your club is part of District-13. Do you feel well informed about our district? Have you studied our governing documents? I can easily understand if your answer is in the negative, if you say you have found it difficult to find information. We need to help each other to a better and deeper understanding of Zonta s organization, primarily the district to which we belong. Usually, you turn to the bylaws of an organization if you want to scrutinize it. District-13 has no single document to turn to, we need to collect Zonta International Bylaws, Supplementary Rules, Conference Rules, and Election Rules; and still we have not all information needed. We have had a debate in the District Board and decided to change this situation. We need one document to turn to. In this way, it will be much easier to explain what the district is and how it works as well as how the areas fit in. Our neighboring districts have such documents. You can look them up at their respective websites. A document, with the title District-13 Statutes, will be our constitution (it must comply with Zonta International Bylaws, because we are part of this organization). In order to come to effect District-13 Conference delegates shall adopt the proposal with a two thirds (2/3) majority. Before District-13 board presents the document for adoption at the District Conference 2015, we want all clubs to have worked with it. We tell you now, because you will need to fix it into your activity plans. We want to hear your comments, your additions or subtractions. The timetable for the process is this Governor s proposal forwarded to D-13 Bylaws and Resolution Committee chair and D-13 Parliamentarian for comments. Comments before August 25, 2014 Board decision on the proposal as fast as possible but prior to September 30, 2014 The District-13 Board s Proposal forwarded to all clubs as soon as possible but prior to October 5, 2014

8 Comments, proposals, questions from clubs as soon as possible but prior to April 30, 2015 Board decision on the final proposal. The final proposal will be forwarded to club presidents and published at the website as soon as possible Board proposal for D-13 Statutes published at the website as part of the District-13 Conference material 2015 no later than 60 days before the District Conference, i.e. July 17, This timetable should allow you time for serious debate in the clubs as well as at area meetings or club presidents meeting during spring I hope for a meaningful and prosperous debate with a result we will find useful in our future work. Item 2 Dansk version D-13 vedtægter Det kan sommetider være vanskeligt præcist at forklare, hvad distriktet er for en størrelse. Normalt ville man ty til vedtægterne for at finde svar, men det er lidt vanskeligere i dette tilfælde, fordi Distrikt- 13 ikke har et samlet sæt vedtægter. I skal have fat både i ZI Bylaws, de supplerende regler for Distrikt-13, konferencereglerne og valgreglerne, og så mangler der endda noget, hvor man er nødt til at kende praksis. Det føles ikke som værende hensigtsmæssigt. Derfor har vi besluttet at udarbejde et sæt vedtægter, som skal vedtages på distriktsmødet i september Vedtægter skal vedtages med 2/3 flertal. Vore nabodistrikter har sådanne vedtægter, I kan finde dem på de respektive distrikters hjemmesider. Men før vi præsenterer et færdigt forslag, vil vi gerne inddrage jer i arbejdet, og høre jeres mening. Derfor bedes I kigge på denne køreplan. Det er vigtigt, at datoerne overholdes. Governors forslag er fremsendt til udtalelse hos formanden for distriktets Bylaws og resolutions komite og distriktets parliamentarian. Deres svar skal være modtaget senest 25. august Distriktsstyret vedtager forslaget senest d. 30. september 2014 Forslaget sendes til alle klubber i distriktet senest d. 5. oktober 2014 Udtalelser fra klubberne skal være modtaget af governor senest den 30. april 2015 På baggrund af udtalelserne gøres forslaget færdigt og udsendes til klubberne så hurtigt som muligt. Senest 60 dage før distriktsmødet dvs. den 17. juli 2015 offentliggøres forslaget på distriktets hjemmeside med henblik på vedtagelse på distriktsmødet. Denne plan skulle gøre det muligt for klubbene at arbejde med forslaget, ligesom det også kan behandles på SU møder, klubformandsmøder eller landsmøder i foråret Distriktsstyret håber på en meningsfuld og god debat og et resultat, vi kan få glæde af i fremtiden.

9 News from the Areas Because of the holiday season only Area 1 has forwarded material. Area 1 From area 01 we were 23 participants at the Convention in Orlando. We had a hard work with the voting of bylaws, a nice social networking and a lot of fun. Now we know each other and the organization Zonta much better. The 27th June we had district meeting for District 13. We got briefing about the Convention. We said god bye to outgoing governor Brit Have and good day and welcome to incoming governor Eva Nielsen. In area 01 we look forward to seminar for the leaders of club boards the in Odense. And to our area meeting in Køge the There is a special place in hell for women who don t help other women.
