Foto: Klaus Holsting I often cycle from my home to work but as a matter of fact we also have a Minister s bicycle at the Ministry, which I usually use for any short trips around Copenhagen. It is easier, smarter - and a lot quicker. Not least because it saves me the hassle of parking. For me, cycling is essential. However, it is during holiday one can really take advantage of the bicycle. I love breathing in the smell of spring, the fresh air after a summer shower or the natural aroma of the forest while the wheels spin under me. Autumn, with the changing colours of the forest, is particularly beautiful. And the silence is a true bliss. Nature should be experienced, enjoyed and appreciated it is one of Denmark s greatest treasures - and it is best done on two wheels. Denmark is a great cycling country. We have a vast network of cycle paths and cycle routes. And if you want to travel further into the green spaces, you simply bring the bicycle on the train. Enjoy your trip when you re off pedalling! There are detailed cycle maps and descriptions of the routes which make use of the less busy roads or actual cycle paths. Some of the routes have been created around a theme, such as the Baltic Sea Route, the Old Army Road, the Limfjord Route, the Fjord Path, the Border Route and the route from Copenhagen to Berlin. 5 Useful tips for your cycling holiday Signposting along the routes Denmark has more than,000 km of signposted cycle routes. The distinctive route symbol is a white cycle on a blue background plus a number, a name or a logo. These signs make it much easier to follow the routes. If there are no arrows on the sign, simply keep going straight ahead. Otherwise, follow the arrows. The route numbers can be found in the regional cycle guides and on other cycle maps. Taking bicycles on trains Bicycles are allowed on most trains in Denmark. The trains have designated sections for bicycles marked with a cycle symbol. Please remember to purchase a separate cycle ticket or bicycle punch card ticket (cykelklippekort) before bringing your bike on the train. Bicycle reservations are necessary from May to August. Contact the Danish State Railways (DSB) if you want to bring a tandem or other specialist bike on the train. Call the local bus operator for further information. All ferries in Denmark allow bicycles onboard against a charge. Tips and ideas Define your expectations before setting off. It is important to take into consideration the route length, terrain, accommodation and luggage capacity. Build in rest days where you can relax and explore the areas you visit. Try to plan the day s stage to follow the marked cycle routes as far as possible in order to get the best experiences and a safer cycling holiday on the roads. The length of the individual stages must be planned with the slowest member of the group in mind. Do not let a fixed schedule for your trip ruin the chance to experience something unplanned on the way. It is the spontaneous experiences that makes the cycle holiday something special. Make sure to book accommodation in advance during the high season as they tend to fill capacity during that period. 7 >> The opposite is true it seems. For the average citizen the bicycle is regarded in the same way as a bodily organ like... the small intestines. It s an integral part of life, it serves many important functions and without it, your life would be shortened rather abruptly but it s certainly not something you think about every day. Or at all. A Dane is pleased to show off their new kitchen, hi-tech mobile phone or designer watch. But if you find yourself saying, Nice bike! to one of them, a quizzical look will cross their face. They ll look down as though they are just noticing the contraption between their legs for the first time. They may even be inwardly miffed that you didn t notice their new shoes. The bicycle just is. I ve learned that there are few cyclists in Denmark, just a lot of Danes who happen to get around by bike. When polled, they say that they ride because it is easy and quick, not because it s environmentally friendly. The Bicycle in Culture The modern Dane has an ambiguous relationship to the transport form they insist on calling rusty garden gate or steel horse. That s ironic considering the fact that there are more songs, poems and literature about the bicycle in Danish than in any other language. The Danish language even has many subliminal references to it. If things are generally going well for you, you have a tailwind. Up against some hindrances in life? You definitely have a headwind. If your company just beat the competition, the losers were shown the back wheel, meaning you flew past them in a sprint. If you re having a horrible day with nothing going right, your chain has fallen off. Quite possibly the worst thing that could happen. I ve realized that the Danes have spent the better part of a century demystifying the bicycle. In a recent Letter to the Editor in a women s magazine, a reader shared an idea for better traction on the pedals when riding in the rain. It didn t involve buying futuristic pedals or cycling shoes. The reader gleefully suggested putting thick elastic bands around the pedal. The Danes love and respect for their design tradition seemingly, and charmingly, doesn t extend to the bicycle. The Perfect Design? Perhaps the bicycle already fulfils the prerequisites for the timehonoured Danish design tradition: simplicity, functionality, informal elegance and sustainability and maybe it s been around so long that it s no longer regarded as something special. A bicycle should just work, getting you from A to C via B without any fuss. The only time you notice your small intestines is when you have gas and the Danes will only notice their bike when the tyre is flat or something breaks. Then there is little sympathy for their faithful friend, and it s unceremoniously chucked into a bike repair shop. I sense that there seems to be some unwritten rule that the collective worth of your clothing should always cost more than your bike, or that some part of your bike must squeak or that rust is an aesthetic addition to any frame or fender. In short, it s not about the bike. It s about you ON the bike. So while Danes will continue their love affair with modern design as they sit in their flash, new kitchen watching their massive flat screen, their bike is relegated to leaning up against the building outside in the rain. Ten Ways of Knowing You re Cycling in Denmark/Copenhagen Just when you think you re riding at a good pace, a mother in high heels and mini-skirt, with a five year-old on the back and two bags of groceries dangling from the handlebars, blows past you like you re carved in stone. 8 DANISH DESIGN pedal trends INNOVATIVE BICYCLE DESIGN - FROM THE TH CENTURY As early as the th century, Danish designers experimented with developing new and improved versions of the bicycle. One of the first to take on this task was Danish engineer Mikael Pedersen (-) who developed the now classic Pedersen-bicycle. Pedersen was also the man behind the world s first hub gear and a folding bike for military use. The Pedersen bicycle is today produced at Cykelsmedien in Freetown Christiania in Copenhagen. A friend and I have embarked on a trip from Rønne to Svaneke on the beautiful island of Bornholm. The route takes us past a number of sights, but also a selection of Bornholm s better eateries and exciting makers of delicacies such as chocolate, icecream and toffee. With its culinary temptations and beautiful cycling routes, the rocky island is an obvious choice of holiday destination for those of us who like active holidays and appreciate good food. Cycling from one taste experience to the next through Bornholm s hilly terrain does not only give you fresh air, exercise and great nature experiences; it also leaves you with a healthy appetite and a positive balance on the calories account which means that we can dig in without feeling guilty. Smoked herring and rugged nature The wind is behind us and blows us gently ahead as the sun is shining. The all-terrain cycles rented in Rønne quickly take us to the forest near Blykoppe plantation, past the beautiful Safire Lake and along the 0 kilometre long road to Hasle. The smell of forest and sea changes constantly while we race along Bornholm s coast. At the Museum Smokehouse in Hasle, we find yellowing photos of women hanging herring for drying and - of course - freshly smoked herring. Immediately after lunch, Bornholm sets the first challenge with steep hills and the route leading through the wilder part of Bornholm s nature which has steep cliffs, fertile vegetation and at the very top, the castle ruin, Hammershus. We enjoy the sight and almost cannot believe that this impressive structure with all its drama and raw beauty can be experienced in Denmark. But here it is, fortunately. After. kilometres of beautiful and varied cycling experiences, we ride through the peaceful streets towards the harbour in Allinge. 15 with all your senses Focus on quality Today, many of the island s food producers and restaurateurs focus so heavily on quality that the name Bornholm has almost become a quality label of its own. That certainly applies to the evening s dinner at Restaurant Købmandsgården (The Merchant s House Restaurant). We decline the lavish pampering meal, but are still more than well taken care of with three well-prepared dishes. Back on route, the wind is challenging us, while the rain slowly clears. We struggle through Bornholm s terror for cyclists - the two large hills at Døndalen and arrive at the yellow town of Gudhjem. When Karamel Kompagniet (The Toffee Company) cooks caramel, the sweet aroma brings people into the shop from the streets of Gudhjem. 19 The readers write the travel description of the year BEAUTIFUL VIEWS - ON A FUNEN FAMILY CYCLING HOLIDAY Our family from Odense consisting of Johnny, Sanne and Johnny s daughter Maja, who is years old, spent five days on a cycling holiday this summer. The plan was a cycling holiday on Funen, and experience from three previous cycling trips had taught us to plan ahead, and the hard work was worth every effort: The fairytale literally cycles past our own main entrance. THE PLEASURE OF SIGN-POSTED CYCLE ROUTES We choose to follow the marked cycle routes most of the time, and this only helps to make the tour more pleasurable. You avoid having to worry all the time about where to go next, since the small cycle route signs are placed at every turn. Instead, we use the map to show us what the manor house or village we just passed is called. We make many stops on the way and take the time to enjoy the moment. Time is not important when we come across some horses that need patting or a small stream that we want to take a closer look at. VIEW FROM THE FUNEN MOUNTAINS In Tommerup Railway Town, we experience the shooting of a summer programme for the local TV station. Just outside of town, the hill Brændholtbjerg rises some metres into the air. We locate the campsite by the hill, which is well signposted and has a field where we pitch our tent. a camp fire with firewood, and also a toilet. The next day, we climb the hill from where there are great views of the undulating, West Funen landscape. It is a lovely area with grazing cattle, small toads everywhere and a wild raspberry thicket - ready to eat. HOSPITALITY AT THE FARM In the village of Kerte, we get close to the beautiful Brænde River Valley and from here, we head for Barløse, where we stay the night at a private campsite on a welcoming, small farm. There is plenty of space, an outside kitchen with running water, a dry toilet and lots of animals; dogs, cats, chicken, sheep and a bottle lamb that bleated when spoken to. FROM FOREST TO IDYLLIC THATCHED HOUSES The following day we enter the forests that surround the manor house Brahesborg, and which are full of life; large toads, circling birds of prey and peculiar insects. We take a close look at Brahesborg when we cross the cobblestoned courtyard. From here, we head for Assens and the hostel where we enjoy a shower and a delicious, home-cooked meal. In the evening, we stroll around Assens where the old quarters, with picturesque, half-timbered houses, stretch almost all the way to the harbour. THE TEENAGER AS ROUTE PLANNER -year-old Maja joins us for the second year in a row. We recommend letting the teenager be part of the decision-making process when planning the trip. The first couple of days, Maja spends most of the time at the back. Every downhill ride is invariably followed by an annoying uphill stretch! But on the last day, when we do the longest stretch, and where Maja had helped plan the route, she eagerly led the group. VISITING GRANNY In Espe, Maja s grandmother has a much needed dinner and bed ready for us. We agree that we all deserved the spotted mountain jersey from Tour de France after all the mountain stages we had passed. Another great summer holiday on bicycle had ended.
