Meget overraskende måtte et par at vores nærmeste konkurrenter stoppe deres operationer. Dette medførte problemer for både de berørte rejsende samt lufthavne, men samtidig flere muligheder for os. Even so, weather experts were consulted for the best time of the year. Bergensers have a thing about the weather. But they don t let things stop just because of a drop of rain! The show must go on. And there are many shows, many annual festivals - from Blues to Ballet, from Raves to Rachmaninov. We Bergensers grasp any excuse for a festival. thing is too trivial. Some came and went, others decided to make Bergen their home. Bergensers travelled abroad and learned and so Bergen became a melting-pot of cultures and rway s most international city. Bergen grew up around its colourful harbour it was the hub of commerce, seafaring and craftsmanship. We became the north s largest city, rway s first capital city and the seat of royalty. So important was Bergen by the 13th century that the Hansas the German medieval guild of merchants opened one of their four European offices on the wharf called Bryggen. Some of the Hansas chose to become Bergensers. And so have many others throughout the centuries. But Bryggen stays the same, its contour just as it was in the 11th century, untouched by shifting times. It has become a symbol of our cultural heritage and has gained a place on UNESCO s World Heritage List. Bergen has become a World Heritage City. Welcome to Bergen, the old city with a young outlook. BERGEN A EUROPEAN CULTURAL CITY From Commerce to Culture Aside from their commercial interests, Bergen merchants had a nose for culture. It was they who laid the foundations for Bergen to be the cultural city it is today. Bergen has one of the world s oldest symphony orchestras, the country s first national theatre, a host of international festivals, and a whole range of museums and institutions, which owe their existence to the generosity of merchants. Also, Bergen was the birthplace of the north s first comic writer, Ludvig Holberg; rway s first major landscape painter, Johan Christian Dahl, and the hugely popular composer, though small in stature, Edvard Grieg. The dramatist Henrik Ibsen was not born in Bergen, but it was here that he entered the world of theatre. The painter, Edvard Munch, was not Bergen-born either, but it was a Bergen industrialist who ensured that the city now has a unique collection of Munch s works. Bergen resounds with music and has some of the country s best choirs, jazz musicians who improvise through the night, and opera singers whose arias soar above the fortress walls of Bergenhus. 6 The Origins of the Dornier Family By Eigil Jacobsen Dornier 328 the Mercedes of air The name Dornier can be traced back to the 13th Century in Franche-Compte, a travel meets all criteria formerly independent region in eastern France. The name Dornier describes a profession, that of a pottery merchant. The Dornier Family can trace back its direct passenger comfort to for a modern plane with ancestors to the small village of Arcon in Rohne-Alpes, a few kilometers from the genuinely be second to none for 32 passengers. Claude Dornier - Aviation Pioneer Claude (Claudius) Honoré Desiré Dornier born in Kempten im Allgäu (May 14, December 5, 1969) was a German airplane builder and founder of Dornier GmbH. His legacy remains in the several aircraft named after him, including the Dornier Do 18 and the 12 engine Dornier DO X flying boat - for decades the world s largest and most powerful airplane. Claude Dornier was born in Bavaria where he grew up and attended school, with science being his chief interest. He moved to Munich and graduated from the Technical University there in In 1910, he joined Luftschiffbau Zeppelin on the Bodensee in Friedrichshafen, where his advanced abilities quickly attracted Count von Zeppelin s attention. Soon appointed as the Count s personal scientific advisor, Dornier began fundamental research and design on improving the strength of light metal sections and later on aircraft engineering and giant metal flying boats. Dornier is also recognised in the history of German aviation for his unique concepts in multiple aircraft engine installations. His planes often featured double-ended props on the front and the back of the planes in a push-pull configuration. A Pioneering Flight from Zurich to Cape Town in 1926 On 7 December 1926, Swiss aviation pioneer Water Mittelholzer embarked on a flight that would take him from Switzerland across the African continent to Cape Town in 77 days. It was the first crossing of Africa in a seaplane ever and became a landmark in Swiss aviation. But this flight was not about breaking another record. It was about adding to the very poor geographical and general knowledge Western societies had about Africa - and promoting air travel. Dornier-Werke Friedrichshafen and the Bayerische Motoren Werke in Munich were the main sponsors, but Mittelholzer could not count on the support of the colonial authorities. The Dornier Merkur Switzerland reconfigured as a seaplane granted him independence from airfields. He carefully planned his journey along the Nile, lakes and the open sea. The trip proved to be challenging. Equipped with inaccurate maps with a scale of 1:1,000,000 and without any infrastructure along the route, most of the 23 legs were very much into unchartered areas, especially for flying. But the Dornier Merkur with its BMW engine proved to be very reliable and the expedition arrived safely in Cape Town on 21 February

A string of specially selected artists from countries all over the world is ready to enchant and amuse you. - 31st of August-3rd of September: Colla Vella dels Xiquets de Valls in the centre of town - 6th of September: Ujazz The one-day event of the festival with newly composed or improvised jazz. Big size matters. This is the theme of this year s festival in Aarhus. Based on this bigness, Aarhus Festival will be inviting guests from all over the world to town from the 31st of August to the 9th of September to experience one of rthern Europe s largest and most acknowledged art and culture festivals with a unique programme including music, theatre, literature, film, food, children s culture as well as architecture and design. Colla Vella An unforgettable experience at Aarhus Festival 2012 will be Colla Vella dels Xiquet de Valls. 180 of the group s members are coming to Aarhus to show the visitors to Aarhus Festival their more than 200-year-old tradition of building Castells tall human towers. The largest and strongest members will provide the foundation of the human tower, while the youngests and smallest children will climb all the way to the top of the living sculpture. The group Colla Vella dels Xiquet de Valls is the oldest of its kind in Catalonia performing human tower building, which was added to the cultural heritage to be protected by Unesco in The people behind Aarhus Festival have been working on getting Colla Vella dels Xiquet de Valls to the festival since 2007, and this year, they succeeded, which is a great joy to the Executive Director of Aarhus Festival, Jens Folmer Jepsen. - We are happy that we have finally succeeded in getting them here after five years. We would gladly have waited 10 years that s how good they are. During the festival, Colla Vella dels Xiquet de Valls can be experienced in the centre of town, where they follow the main routes, which means that most of the visitors to the festival can see the tower building themselves. - Colla Vella provide an unforgettable suggestion to how the individual and the community can come together and form a whole, says Jens Folmer Jepsen, who has experienced the human tower building in Catalonia and now looks forward to the group becoming a part of this year s festival. - 7th-9th of September: Food Festival at Tangkrogen Food Festival is Denmark s new food festival with ambitions of becoming the biggest in the rdic countries. This festival is a gathering point for anyone interested in food, and here, your stomach as well as your head and heart will be filled. - 9th of September: Family sunday at Tivoli Friheden Great entertainment and lots of activities all day long. 10 The delighted author after a successful airshow at Skrydstrup (photo - Ole Steen Hansen) - the story of Denmark s new Antonov AN-2 Text and photos - Dieter Betz The bear has landed When asked if I would act as a sort of consultant on an Antonov 2, my heart skipped a couple of beats. Jeppe Stabell was doing the asking, because he thought my 20,000 flying hours (including several thousand as an instructor on tail wheel plane), could help him learn the ropes as a newly qualified AN 2 pilot. It gave me great excitement to see the plane arrive at Aarhus Airport, as it had been some time since I d last seen this giant of the air. Taking hold of the steering column of the Antonov 2 is like trying to twist the horns of a stiffnecked bull. But even though the controls may seem a little stiff in the beginning, the first touch is the start of a long love story. Hiding behind this pompous Russian facade of spectacular junk is the most charming and well-behaved set of flying controls of any pilot s dreams. It s a teddy bear you simply want to hug. Neither is it any coincidence that the plane s logo consists of a fine portrait of a bear, painted by a renowned Lithuanian painter. The plane s registration is LY-BIG, but an application has already been submitted to get the plane registered as Danish-operated. The former owners of LY-BIG were two Brits who became inspired by a cartoon film of a flying bear, and when they bought the plane in Lithuania, christened it the Baltic bear, and there is a muscular, potent and slightly lazy bear with a hint of savagery well concealed under the confidence-inspiring exterior. Four wings, a weight of 5.5 tonnes and seating for 14 passengers makes the Antonov AN 2 the world s biggest single-engine biplane. And it s in a class of its own - and not economy class either - as it s fitted out as a commercial plane in the jet set class, with 5 comfortable seats in white leather, complete with bar and fridge. Even if the plane is left parked for some time, a panel of solar cells on the top of the wings ensure that the cold drinks in the fridge remain cold. At the rear of the plane is a toilet and shower. The passenger cabin is fitted with TV screens connected to 19 cameras mounted different places on the plane, to let the passengers watch the pilots at work, or see along the fuselage. The pilot s workplace, the cockpit, is fitted out to modern standards with the latest navigation aids. Only a few of the engine controls retain their original Russian text - supplemented by English translation of course. There s plenty of room, and the small windows all the way around make it feel like a greenhouse - and have the same effect. That s why there are curtains, and below the elbows are more windows with a view directly down to the exhaust pipe and wheel. Russian aero-designer Oleg Konstantinovich Antonov designed the plane, as he believed there was a market for an extremely robust, simple machine which could be flown by anyone who has learned to fly and land on straight, unsurfaced runways of around 200 metres. That s why they were fitted with a pneumatic brake system similar to that found on large trucks, connected to a compressor allowing the air pressure in the tyres and shock absorbers to be adjusted from the cockpit. The plane has an onboard pump enabling it to pump up fuel from barrels in the field, and is fitted with extra large batteries to make external starters unnecessary. Even though it may resemble something from WWI it made its maiden flight in 1947 and became the most widely-used plane of its type in the Soviet Union s air force, and those of its allies. It was mainly used for transporting troops, and in civilian life, as a crop sprayer on the enormous Russian fields. wadays, it is still widely used for parachuting and for freight and passenger transport in remote areas, where it can land on makeshift runways. Over 20,000 examples of this popular plane were built all over the world, including in China, where it is still in limited production today. Its production run (so far!) of 45 years earned it a place in the Guinness Book of Records. Our Annushka was built in the late 80s, making it one of the more recent. When the tanks are full with about 1200 litres of fuel, it has a range of 900 km - but don t think there s anything wrong if the traffic on the motorway below is moving faster than you are. Despite the massive radial engine (an exact copy of the American DC-3 engine) having 1000 horsepower, max. speed is only 190 kph and it uses over 200 litres per hour. But on the other hand, the payload is over 2 tonnes. In the English-speaking world, the AN 2 is affectionately known as Sweet little Annie and Maid of all work, and one of its best-known characteristics is the cough it gives when starting up, using no less than two litres of engine oil, generating a huge cloud of blue smoke - that also fills up the cockpit. Cockpit wiew Airshow Few pilots are able to hold their breath long enough for the smoke to dissipate, but before it even appears, there is a very important thing to do: start the engine. And this is done using an inerti-starter, which quite simply consists of a flywheel. All you have to do is pull a handle which starts a humming noise, which becomes a more and more deafening howl, which turns into a whine that comes close to the pain barrier. t surprising really at 12,000 revs. Let go of the handle and there s a loud clonk as the starter engages and the four blade propeller slowly begins to move until the first cough indicates that the first cylinder has ignited and - if you re lucky - the other eight quickly follow in succession. And this is when the landscape behind you begins to look very different. If parked at an airport, informing the control tower that your plane is not on fire is advisable. The times when the fire service of various airports have been scrambled when an Antonov starts its engine are now beyond count. Once the thick smoke begins to thin out, it takes over 20 minutes of idling before the 60 litres of engine oil are warmed up and an engine test can be performed. When the wind speed exceeds 20 knots, the bear is practically uncontrollable on the ground, as its vast body acts as a very effective sail, and the freely rotating tail wheel makes it very difficult to steer the monster. Once on the runway, the tail wheel can be locked and things get easier. And that s when the next big surprise comes along: Push the throttle gently forwards and the one thousand horses come to life. Before you ve even given it full throttle, the beast is in the air. Annushka - as the plane is known to the Russians - has formidable performance, especially at low speeds. She has no official stall speed, at least none is given in the plane s manual, apart LY-BIG passes Tunø, home to one of the shortest runways in the country - perfect for an An

Its slotted flaps, huge rudder, plus automatic slats the full length of the wing front make it impossible to make a power off stall, which means that you can pull the steering column until the engine cuts out, and then the whole machine will slowly descend from the heavens like a parachute, with a forward speed of just 40 kph. And that is precisely the procedure for cutting the engine at night. It s possible to survive, even if you should be unlucky enough to hit a tree, because - as the Russians say - Hit a tree with an AN 2, and the tree will come off worst. This plane s proud owner, factory owner Bo Zacho, cannot fly the plane yet. But he has flown a Trike (a twin seat ultra-light) for over 30 years, and has his own 380 metre runway right beside his factory near the Silkeborg lakes. Plan drawings of a standard An-2 He thinks a massive silver-coloured biplane will look good standing there, and he can also use it for his business, which is repairing and maintaining runways at airports all over Europe. But a pilot is required, and the natural choice was 30 year-old Jeppe Stabell, an old friend of the family. Jeppe is a pilot and an aeromechanic - the perfect match for this plane, and not afraid of having a go at this project despite of his limited flying experience and lack of tail wheel training. Thorough courses at flying schools in the UK and Lithuania on the AN 2 have given him the necessary basic skills to be able to land on the shortest runways in Denmark without too much concern. But as he admits himself: Your heart does tend to beat a bit faster when landing in a side wind on the tiny island of Tunø, or even on Bo s runway. But it keeps you on your toes! (the usable extent of the runway on Tunø is just 280 metres). We were invited to show the plane at the Skrydstrup airshow on the 70th anniversary of the Danish air force. When we finally received permission to put the plane through its paces, her majesty the queen had already gone home.
