4 WHO ARE THE CAPITAL CITY VIPERS? We are a non-profit ice hockey organization that fields travel and recreational teams at each age level as structured by USA Hockey. We follow the American Development Model (ADM) recommended by USA Hockey and the Safe Sport model designed by USA Hockey. Our goal is to develop each player s individual skills so he/she can achieve his/her full potential as a hockey player. We accomplish this goal by evaluating our players to place them at the appropriate skill level and then using positive motivation and age appropriate practices to promote skill development. The travel teams play their league games in the Delaware Valley Hockey League (DVHL); the DVHL contains teams around Eastern Pennsylvania as well as Delaware. The Capital City Vipers Travel program is a competitive level of hockey and requires a strong time commitment by both the child and the parent. Travel teams frequently practice twice a week from August until March with one or two games on most weekends beginning in September until February. There are also voluntary off ice/dryland activities or skills clinics that occur from March until August. It is important that the child and the parent understand and accept the time commitment that the program requires before registering with the Capital City Vipers travel program. The recreational teams play their games against other recreational level teams at local rinks including York, Lancaster, Hershey, and Palmyra. Recreational teams frequently practice once a week and play one game a week. Both games and practices occur on the weekends. The recreational season begins in September and runs until March. All Viper s practices and home games occur at Twin Ponds East or Twin Pond West. Hockey Director Rob Shearer has 16 plus years of professional hockey experience (AHL, NHL and Europe). Rob is in charge of setting up and running the Mite program. Rob also helps out at the weekly practices at each level, supporting the coaches and working with the kids. Rob also runs the skills clinics that the club runs during the off-season. Director of Player Development Freddy Cassivi who has 14 plus years of professional hockey experience in the AHL, NHL and Europe is in charge of the PeeWee Level. Freddy also works with the goalies throughout the Vipers organization periodically throughout the year. elcome

5 WHAT ARE THE AGE RANGES FOR THE UPCOMING SEASON? USA Hockey groups players based on their birth year. Here are the age ranges for next season: Mites and under Squirts & 2006 Pee Wees & 2004 Bantams & 2002 Midgets (16U) & 2000 Midgets (18U) & 1998 There are three skill levels for the Squirt through Midgets age levels: AA, A, B HOW MANY TRAVEL TEAMS WILL THE VIPERS FIELD NEXT SEASON? We plan on fielding the following teams for the season: 3 Mite teams - 1 DVHL Travel Team, 2 Recreational Mites Teams 2 Squirt teams - A and B 2 Pee Wee teams - AA and A or B 1 Bantam team - A 2 Midget U16 teams - AA and A 1 Midget U18 team - A *Capital City Vipers reserves the right NOT to field a team at any level because of numbers or based on the skill set of the players trying out. HOW MANY PLAYERS ARE ON A TRAVEL TEAM ROSTER? Travel teams will have a target roster, including goalies. Actual roster could be slightly higher or lower then the target roster (target rosters at recommended by USA Hockey for each age group). For ages Squirt through Midget the DVHL follows the USA Hockey maximum roster of eighteen (18) skaters and two (2) goalies. The Capital City Board will set final travel rosters.

6 TRAVEL TEAM POLICIES ICE TIME Coaches at all levels are allowed to sit players for violations of team rules and other discipline issues on and off the ice. *Equal ice time expectations are for 5vs5 play. Ice time should not be looked at on game by game basis. A player may get less ice time in one game and more in the very next game. TRAVEL GAMES Travel league games are played within the competitive Delaware Valley Hockey League (DVHL) clubs. OTHER TRAVEL GAMES AND TOURNAMENT RECOMMENDATIONS These non-league games may be scheduled against non-dvhl teams and may require weekend trip(s). In addition to pre-season and non-league play, travel teams participate in tournaments which could be held out of this general area and could require overnight trips. The Capital City Viper Board does not schedule any tournaments for any team. The board does recommend the minimum and maximum number of tournaments each level should participate in. It is the responsibility of each team s Coaching staff and Parents to determine the actual number of tournaments that will be played. The Capital City Vipers expect that each team at every level will play in at least the minimum number of tournaments. The Capital City Vipers will reimburse each club up to $ towards one tournament. VIPER EVALUATION POLICY Evaluating players at any level is not easy and there is no perfect way to evaluate young players. The Capital City Vipers do their best to give every player an opportunity to show their abilities during evaluations by using the following process: Multiple evaluation ice slots Non-parent evaluators (minimum of 3) Drills and scrimmage time during ice slots It is our goal to place players at the appropriate level based on their skill sets and maturity. It is important parents understand that kids play at a level where they are challenged and where they can succeed. Players must evaluate at the level they are qualified to play, based on year of birth. Exceptions will be considered on a player-by-player basis. The decision on these exceptions will be at the discretion of the Hockey Director and the Director of Player Development. Once the rosters are set it is the coach s role to develop all the players on his/her team regardless of their ability. olicies

8 GOALIE POLICY Each travel team at the Squirt through Midget levels will roster a maximum of (2) goaltenders. A child who signs up as a goaltender will pay the discounted fee and will not be available to play an out position (defense/forward) during games. Ice time for a team with two goaltenders is expected to be 50/50 at all age levels with the exception of any AA level. At the AA level a 60:40 ratio is acceptable at the coaches discretion. In situations where there is only one goalie on his/her team the discounted rate still applies. If a child at the Squirt or Pee Wee level registers and evaluates as a goalie but also wants to play as a forward/defenseman during the season, the child can do so at the head coach s discretion and the Director of Hockey s recommendation. This decision will be based on his/her ability level and the roster size. At the Squirt B level any goaltender will be allowed to skate as a player instead of backing up the other goaltender, regardless of the ability of the player. Goaltenders that want to play both (goaltender/ forward/defense) must pay the full rate for the level they are competing at during the season. This option is only available at the Squirt and PeeWee levels. Players that want to enjoy this option must evaluate at both positions and will be placed at the appropriate level for their overall skill level. oalie policy

9 TRAVEL MITES AND LIMITED TRAVEL IN-HOUSE Viper Mites follow the ADM Model at the Mite level The program consists of approximately 40 hours or practice time and 20 games Clinics will be full ice Practices will be on the puddle at Twin Ponds East Games will be half ice Ice Time - DVHL and Limited travel, equal ice time, no full time goalies and rotation of positions. Tournaments Mite In-House- minimum of 1, usually played towards the end of the season, maximum of 2 DVHL Mites- minimum of 1, maximum of 3 SQUIRT Viper Squirts follow the ADM Model of a 3:1 ratio of practices to games at the Squirt level Participate in full ice clinics (station format) Practice twice a week on half ice Players will also be expected to participate in all off-ice workouts as recommended by USA Hockey Games will be full ice Ice Time- A and B equal ice time except in the last 2 minutes of a game, AA equal ice time except in the last 4 minutes of the game Tournaments AA- minimum of 3, maximum of 4 A - minimum of 2, maximum of 4 B - minimum of, maximum of 3 PEE WEE Practice twice a week on half ice or full ice Players are expected to participate in any office workouts organized by the team Ice Time - A and B equal ice time, except in the last 4 minutes of the game. 11 vents SPRING/SUMMER CLINICS The Viper organization runs clinics throughout the summer. These clinics are not mandatory and will not be used to evaluate your son/daughter. These clinics will focus on individual skills that are appropriate for the age level of the player. Capital City Vipers organize clinics on the puddle for Mites through Bantams. These clinics require signup (spots are limited) and the cost is not included in your yearly fee. Capital City Vipers also run a training camp weekend. (Saturday and Sunday) The training camp is held for Squirts through Midgets and includes on-ice and off-ice training. This training camp is included in your yearly fee. Skating clinics will be posted on our website. CAPITAL CITY VIPERS EVENTS AND FUNDRAISERS The Capital City Vipers recognize that fundraising will be a very important facet of the program. Fundraising helps keep the cost of the program at a manageable level. The Club will appoint a Sponsorship/Fundraising individual who will be in charge of coordination club-wide efforts to raise money. Each team is allowed to run a fundraiser to help lower their team s costs. 70% of the funds collected will go directly to the team and the other 30% will go to the general fund of the club to help off-set club wide expenses. The Board of Directors must approve all fundraising activities.
