Det er positivt; og som fond anerkender vi vores medansvar til en åben og gennemskuelig debat. Vi vil meget gerne fortælle, hvem vi er, hvad vi gør, og hvordan vi godt kunne tænke os fortsat at skabe værdi i samfundet. A debate over funds is currently raging in Denmark. The Lauritzen Foundation sees this as something positive and we recognise that we too have a responsibility to participate in an open and transparent debate. 3 indledning/introduction Hvis den nuværende debat er opstået, fordi fonde opfattes som et uudforsket område for medierne og for befolkningen, så ser vi hos Lauritzen Fonden frem til en saglig og velfunderet gennemgang af fondenes virke. Således kan vi undgå, at mangelfuld indsigt omsættes til fejlagtige opfattelser og handlinger. Det vil være frygtelig synd, hvis konsekvenserne af debatten kommer til at ramme dem, der har mest brug for støtte, og sætter en stopper for de danske fonde, der i den grad bidrager til innovation og vækst i det danske samfund. Det er et helt naturligt menneskeligt instinkt at føle glæde ved at kunne uddele penge og se, at de gør en forskel for dem, der er trængte. Så hvorfor skulle virksomheden undlade at tage medansvar, når den har muligheden? Det er værd at huske på, at en fond opstår ved, at en eller flere enkeltpersoner overdrager deres værdier i et selskab, som derefter på grundlag af en fundats eller vedtægter forvaltes af en bestyrelse. Denne måde at drive forretning på er ikke på nogen måde i strid med forretningsmæssige regulativer i det danske samfund. Men lige nu er medierne i Danmark optaget af en dagsorden, der fokuserer på, hvad der betegnes som fondenes manglende åbenhed. Det vil vi gerne være med til at gøre noget ved. Dels ved åbent at fortsætte vores virke som hidtil, dels ved i højere grad at være en aktiv bidragyder til at nuancere debatten. Men når debatten får den drejning, at fonde er institutioner, der blot puger penge sammen og ikke betaler deres andel til samfundet fx. gennem skat, så kan Lauritzen Fonden altså ikke genkende sig selv i kritikken. Med hensyn til skat er det let glemt, at de midler, som en erhvervsdrivende fond har til rådighed, typisk stammer fra et overskud i ejede virksomheder. Virksomheder, der naturligvis hver især efterlever de skatteregler og betalinger, som er gældende for virksomhedsbeskatning. Altså er midlerne, som tilføres fonde fra denne side, allerede beskattet. Det skal også lige med, at kritikken, der går på størrelsen af uddelinger fx. i forhold til egenkapital, rammer noget ved siden af. I en erhvervsdrivende fond vil en meget stor del af egenkapitalen blive udgjort af ejerandele i de tilknyttede virksomheder. Det er svært at forestille sig, at fondene skal sælge ud af deres ejerandele for at leve op til en eller anden arbitrær uddelingsprocentsats. Det ville dels kunne hæmme væksten i virksomhederne, dels måske være i strid med de vedtægter, der er opstillet af stifterne, og ikke mindst kunne det risikere at reducere de uddelinger, der er så hårdt brug for. If the current debate has been sparked as a result of funds being perceived as unchartered territory by the media and the population at large, the Lauritzen Foundation looks forward to a relevant and well-conceived review of what funds actually do. This way we can avoid a lack of knowledge leading to misconceptions and errors. It would be a shame if the consequences of the debate were to impact negatively on those who are most in need of our support and hamper the funds that contribute greatly to innovation and growth in Danish society. Feeling joy when donating money and seeing it making a difference to those who need it is the most natural thing in the world. So why should we not do our bit, when the company has the means to do so? It is worth bearing in mind that funds are formed by one or more individuals transferring their assets into a company which thereafter, on the basis of a charter or regulations, will be administered by a board. Running a business in this way does not in any way breach Danish business regulations. At the moment, however, Danish media are consumed by an agenda that focuses on what they call the lack of transparency in funds. We would like to help do something about this by continuing to operate openly, as always, and contributing more actively to creating a nuanced debate. However, we do not recognise ourselves in the picture painted when the debate is twisted to make out that funds are institutions that only accumulate money and fail to do their bit for society by, for example, paying tax. When talking about tax it is easy to forget that the funds available to a corporate foundation typically derive from the profits of the owner companies; organisations that comply with the tax regulations and payments applicable to businesses. The money that comes into funds in this way has thus already been taxed. Similarly, the criticism relating to the size of the donations in relation to, for example, equity is also somewhat unfounded. In a corporate foundation, a large share of the equity is made up of shares in associated businesses and funds could hardly be expected to sell their shares in order to be able to meet some arbitrary donation percentage. This could hinder growth in the businesses and would go against the regulations established by the founders; not least risk a reduction in the donations so desperately needed.

4 Som nævnt er der i det forløbne år i de danske medier blevet sat yderligere fokus på den samfundsmæssige betydning af fonde og deres virke. I Danmark alene er antallet af fonde steget fra ca til i løbet af de seneste 20 år. Når man taler om fonde, bliver man dog nødt til at skelne mellem erhvervsdrivende og almennyttige fonde, og selv denne opdeling er alt for simplificeret. Ikke to danske fonde er nemlig ens; en erhvervsdrivende fond kan sagtens være almennyttig, men det er langt fra alle, der er det. Lauritzen Fonden er en erhvervsdrivende fond med almennyttige aktiviteter. Det indebærer, at en betydelig del af vores virke er at udøve aktivt ejerskab af de virksomheder, der findes i Lauritzen-Gruppen. Kort sagt betyder det, at uddelinger til almennyttige formål skal besluttes og vedtages under hensyntagen til hvilke erhvervsmæssige tiltag, der kan forventes at opstå i samme periode. Tal fra Erhvervs- og Selskabsstyrelsen indikerer, at der findes omkring erhvervsdrivende fonde i Danmark. Det er en ret høj koncentration set i international relation, men modellen er begyndt at sprede sig til flere andre lande. Der er naturligvis forskel fra fond til fond på hvilke vedtægter, stifterne har pålagt den siddende bestyrelse og direktion. Men fælles for de erhvervsdrivende fonde, der yder almennyttige uddelinger, er, at man har ønsket en videreudvikling af de tilknyttede virksomheder med de positive samfunds- og medarbejderrelaterede konsekvenser, det fører med sig. Det er af stifterne blevet besluttet, at en del af de midler, som frembringes gennem virksomhederne, skal gavne almenvellet frem for en aktionærkreds. Og det er denne balance, fondene og deres bestyrelser skal finde i fællesskab; en balance som sagtens kan svinge fra periode til periode i takt med samfundets høj- og lavkonjunkturer. Lauritzen Fonden hilser en debat om fonde og deres virke velkommen. Vi ser frem til at være en aktiv deltager i debatten. Og vi vil bidrage til, at den føres på et oplyst og sagligt grundlag. As previously mentioned, Danish media has come to focus even more on the social role played by funds in society and their impact in the past year. Over the past 20 years the number of funds has increased from around 10,000 to 14,000 in Denmark alone. When talking about funds one must distinguish between corporate foundations and charitable foundations, even though this is in fact a rather simplified distinction. No two Danish funds are alike; a corporate foundation may well also be charitable, but this is far from the case for all such funds. The Lauritzen Foundation is a corporate foundation with charitable activities. This means that a significant part of our work involves active ownership of the businesses that make up the Lauritzen Group. In brief, it means that donations to charitable causes are to be decided and made while taking into account what corporate activities are expected in the same period. Figures from the Danish Business Authority indicate that there are around 1,300 corporate foundations in Denmark. This is a rather high number compared with international figures, but the number is on the increase in other countries too. The regulations imposed on fund boards and managements by the founders naturally vary from fund to fund. However, all corporate foundations that make charitable donations are based on a desire to further develop the associated businesses, with the resulting positive consequences for society and company employees. The founders have decided that part of the funds raised by the businesses shall benefit the general public rather than the shareholders. The funds and their boards need to work together to find this balance; a balance that may swing one way or the other in pace with recessions and periods of economic growth. The Lauritzen Foundation welcomes the debate on funds and their effect and we look forward to participating and contributing to an informed and relevant discussion. 7 J. Lauritzen A/S Et udfordrende år på et usikkert marked/ J. Lauritzen A/S A challenging year in an uncertain market Om fonden/about the foundation Rederiet J. Lauritzen A/S, JL, beskæftiger en diversificeret flåde af moderne tørlast-, gastank- og produkttankskibe samt dynamisk positionerbare servicefartøjer til offshoreindustrien. Ved udgangen af 2011 omfattede flåden i alt 159 skibe. Desuden var der i årets løb indbefragtet skibe for kortere perioder var et udfordrende år kendetegnet ved fald i den globale økonomiske vækst, øget finansiel og økonomisk usikkerhed samt stor tilgang af ny tonnage i de fleste segmenter af international skibsfart. Desuden var der store udsving i råvarepriserne, hvilket også bidrog til problemerne for skibsfarten. Den politiske og sociale uro i Nordafrika og Mellemøsten sendte råolieprisen i vejret til et niveau, der ikke er set siden 2008 med oliepriser på USD 125 pr. tønde. Andre råvarepriser viste lignende udsving, og høje råvarepriser var med til at lægge en dæmper på efterspørgslen efter søtransport, mens genopbygning af varelagre blev udskudt. Fra april kom de fleste råvarepriser under pres og ultimo 2011 lå mange af dem pænt lavere end på samme tidspunkt i Fortsat vækst under svære markedsvilkår JL fortsatte implementeringen af det vækst- og investeringsprogram, der blev påbegyndt i I løbet af året fik JL leveret i alt 17 nybygninger, heraf 10 tørlastskibe, fire fuldtryksgastankskibe, to produkttankskibe og ét shuttletankskib. Desuden blev ni tørlastskibe, et gastankskib og et produkttankskib taget på længerevarende periodecertepartier. Takket være en betydelig fornyelse og udvidelse af flåden inden for de seneste år ejer JL i dag en moderne og effektiv flåde af tørlastskibe med en gennemsnitsalder på 1,6 år, af gastankskibe på 9 år, af produkttankskibe på 3 år og af offshore servicefartøjer på 5 år. Ved udgangen af 2011 var JLs investerede kapital mere end seksdoblet siden 2004, og den vil øges yderligere i 2012 som følge af færdiggørelsen af det nuværende investeringsprogram. Årsregnskabet viste et resultat på DKK -230 mio. og var for første gang i en længere årrække ikke positivt. Resultatet var utilfredsstillende, men det afspejler de vanskelige markedsvilkår, som international skibsfart var underlagt i Driftsresultatet var lavere end forventet, idet JL blev hårdt ramt af modparters misligholdelse af kontrakter. The J. Lauritzen A/S shipping company, or JL, holds a diversified fleet of modern dry cargo ships, gas and product tankers and dynamically positionable service vessels for the offshore industry. By the end of 2011, the fleet comprised a total of 159 ships with additional vessels chartered on a temporary basis. The past year was characterised by a fall in global economic growth, increased financial and economic instability and a large supply of new tonnages in most segments of international shipping. There were also major fluctuations in raw material prices, which presented problems for the shipping industry. The political and social unrest in North Africa and the Middle East sent crude oil prices soaring to levels not seen since 2008 at USD 125/barrel. Other raw materials showed similar price developments and this stunted the demand for maritime transport while the restocking of goods reserves was delayed. Most raw material prices came under pressure in April and, by the end of 2011, the majority were far lower than in the corresponding period in Continued growth despite difficult market conditions JL proceeded with the implementation of the growth and investment programme that it had initiated in 2004 and received a total of 17 new-builds over the course of the year, including ten dry cargo ships, four full pressure gas tankers, two product tankers and one shuttle tanker. In addition, nine dry cargo ships, one gas tanker and one product tanker entered long-term period charter-parties. Thanks to considerable renewal and expansion of the fleet in the previous years, JL currently holds a modern and efficient fleet of dry cargo ships with an average age of 1.6 years, gas tankers averaging 9 years, product tankers averaging 3 years and offshore service vessels averaging 5 years. At the end of 2011, JL s invested capital had increased more than six-fold since 2004 and will increase further in 2012 as a result of the completion of the current investment programme. The annual accounts showed a profit of DKK -230 million, which had failed to increase for the first time in a series of years. The result was unsatisfactory and reflects the difficult market conditions for international shipping in The operating profit was lower than expected as JL was adversely affected by its counterparties failure to meet their contract obligations.

8 Største udfordringer er de usikre tider Den form for skibsfart, som JL driver, er global, og derfor er de største udfordringer for JL de usikkerheder, der knytter sig til udviklingen i den globale økonomi og politik. Ved indgangen til 2012 er de umiddelbare forventninger til den økonomiske aktivitet ikke opmuntrende, da både regeringernes og erhvervslivets beslutningstagere stadig fordøjer uroen på de finansielle markeder, som prægede sidste halvdel af Der har i starten af 2012 vist sig visse tegn på bedring af situationen, men det er endnu for tidligt at afgøre, om et fornyet opsving i den internationale økonomi er på vej. Efter et rekordstort antal leveringer af nye skibe i 2011 forventes et svagt fald i antallet af leveringer i 2012, dels fordi finansiering fortsat er begrænset, dels fordi rederne ikke har travlt med at tage levering af skibe, der skal ud på et vanskeligt marked, og værfterne ikke ønsker at se deres ordrebøger blive udhulet for hurtigt. Overkapacitet på de store shippingmarkeder, herunder tørlast og produkttank, er derfor en væsentlig risikofaktor. Realisering af ny strategi JL er i dag et helt andet rederi end for blot få år siden. Aktiviteter er afviklet, men endnu flere nye er kommet til. Som eksempler kan nævnes: - Lauritzen Bulkers har udviklet sig til en position som et betydeligt rederi med en stor flåde af ejede og delejede skibe i såvel Handysize, Handymax, Panamax som Capesize segmenterne. - Lauritzen Kosan har gennemført en ændring af flådestrukturen til større skibsstørrelser med en bredere teknologisk platform og herunder opbygget en flåde af ethylene gastankskibe. - Lauritzen Offshore er etableret med en flåde af teknologisk avancerede, dynamisk positionerbare servicefartøjer til offshoreindustrien, der alle er på længerevarende kontrakter til det brasilianske olieselskab Petrobras. - Lauritzen Tankers har etableret sig som en voksende aktør inden for MR produkttankskibe. Organisatorisk har JL inden for de seneste par år styrket sig i forhold til vækstmarkederne ved etablering af nye selskaber i Singapore og Brasilien. JL har inden for de seneste tre år to gange været nomineret til den prestigefyldte Ship of the Year - pris, der gives af Lloyd s List og i et tilfælde vundet prisen. I 2011 var der atter hæder til JL, idet Lauritzen Bulkers modtog den fornemme Bulk Operator of the Year pris, der er indstiftet af International Bulk Journal. JL iværksatte i løbet af året et omfattende energieffektiviseringsprojekt med henblik på at opnå en betydelig nedsættelse af energiforbruget og samtidig sikre en markant reduktion af emissioner som CO2, NOX og SOX. Krisen ramte i 2011 JL kom godt gennem den internationale økonomiske og finansielle krises første år fra , men blev i 2011 ramt af krisen, især på grund af modparters kontraktbrud. JL må desværre konstatere, at krisen har udfordret den gamle maritime ed My word is my bond, og JL har derfor iværksat yderligere risikostyringsprocedurer med henblik på at reducere risikoen for kontraktbrud i fremtiden. Nye udfordringer i forventes at blive endnu et udfordrende år med pres på fragtrater og tonnagepriser. På trods af global økonomisk usikkerhed og mange risikofaktorer vil JL anvende den forretningsmæssige platform, organisation, ejerstruktur og balance til at udnytte de muligheder, der forventes at komme som konsekvens af de vanskelige markedsvilkår. I starten af 2012 var en betydelig del af den forventede omsætning sikret via indgåede kontrakter. Uncertain times, the main challenge JL operates global shipping, meaning that the company s main challenge is the uncertainty attached to the global economy and international politics. At the start of 2012, the immediate economic outlook is not looking too bright as decision-makers in both government and business are still coming to terms with the uncertainty that characterised the financial markets for most of the latter half of Signs of improvement could be discerned at the start of However, it is too early to determine whether the global economy is heading for a renewed upturn. Following a record number of deliveries of new ships in 2011, a slight fall in the number of deliveries is expected in The reasons for this are that financing remains limited, shipping companies are reluctant to send new ships out onto an uncertain market and wharf operators do not wish to see their order books depleted too quickly. Overcapacity in the major shipping markets, including dry cargo and product tankers, is therefore a significant risk factor. Implementing a new strategy JL is a completely different shipping company today than it was a few years ago. Some activities have been phased out, but even more have been added. For example: - Lauritzen Bulkers has positioned itself as an important shipping company comprising a large fleet of fully and partially owned ships in the Handysize, Handymax, Panamax and Capesize segments. 8 9 LauritzenFonden Om Fonden/About the Foundation

In terms of organisation, JL has strengthened its position towards the growth markets in the last few years by establishing new companies in Singapore and Brazil. JL has been nominated for the prestigious Ship of the Year award twice in the past three years, winning it once. The award is given by Lloyd s List. In 2011, JL was again honoured when Lauritzen Bulkers received the distinguished Bulk Operator of the Year award, founded by the International Bulk Journal. During the year JL also launched an extensive energy optimisation project aimed at achieving a significant reduction in energy consumption and a marked lowering of CO2, NOX and SOX emissions. The crisis struck in 2011 JL emerged from the first years ( ) of the international economic and financial crisis relatively unscathed. However, in 2011 the company was hit hard by the crisis, particularly as a result of its business partners breaches of contract. JL has unfortunately had to acknowledge that the crisis has challenged the old maritime oath that states my word is my bond. As a result, JL has implemented further risk management procedures aimed at reducing the risk of breaches of contract in the future. New challenges in 2012 The year ahead is expected to be another challenging year, bringing further pressure to freight rates and tonnage prices. Despite global uncertainty and many risk factors, JL wishes to use its business platform, organisation, ownership structure and balance to leverage the possibilities that are expected to arise as a result of the difficult market conditions. By the start of 2012 a vast part of the expected income had been secured through contracts.

10 DFDS A/S Endnu et dynamisk og begivenhedsrigt år/ DFDS A/S Another dynamic and eventful year DFDS A/S driver Nordeuropas største integrerede logistik- og shippingnetværk, hvori der indgår 55 skibe på fragt- og passagerruter i Østersøen, Nordsøen og Den Engelske Kanal. Hertil kommer tilknyttede havneterminaler. Desuden omfatter DFDS logistikaktiviteter i form af trailertransporter, jernbanetransporter og varelagre i en stor del af Europa. DFDS har ca medarbejdere og en årlig omsætning på mere end 11 mia. kr. CEO & President Niels Smedegaard sætter ord på Året var endnu ét i en stime af begivenhedsrige og udfordrende år. I 2010 blev rederiet Norfolkline overtaget, og det ændrede selskabets karakter væsentligt. Vi blev en anden type virksomhed efter det. Vi fik en meget større logistikdivision, og vi voksede generelt. Vi fik flere medarbejdere, nye markedsområder, og samtidig skulle enkelte dele tilpasses, siger Niels Smedegaard. Det stod allerede fra starten af 2011 klart, at der var et problem i forhold til markedet på Det Irske Hav, hvor de stærkt tabsgivende ro-ro ruter nu enten er blevet frasolgt eller lukket. En af de største og vigtigste opgaver var integrationen af DFDS og Norfolkline, som er gået over al forventning. At skulle integrere en virksomhed, der er ca. 70 pct. af ens egen størrelse, er ellers ikke nogen nem opgave i praksis. Til det siger Niels Smedegaard: På mange væsentlige områder stod vi med to helt forskellige organisationer. Her var vi nødt til i fællesskab at finde frem til en ny, mere dynamisk struktur, så vi bedst kunne integrere Norfolkline med DFDS og samtidig skabe en stærkere, mere fleksibel virksomhed, der var bedre rustet til at kunne optage yderligere virksomheder og etablere nye forretningsområder i fremtiden. Den nye struktur kom på plads gennem arbejdsgrupper for hvert enkelt område. Arbejdsgrupperne, som startede deres analyse og planlægningsarbejde meget tidligt, faktisk måneder før den formelle sammenlægning, bestod alle af medarbejdere fra DFDS og Norfolkline. I fællesskab nåede de frem til løsninger, der blev vurderet af en styregruppekomite, og efterfølgende implementeret da virksomhederne blev slået sammen. På den måde skabte vi sammen et nyt selskab; en proces, vi egentlig havde regnet med ville tage tre år, blev i det store og hele gennemført på halvandet år og med stor succes. På IT-området, Norfolkline havde et udliciteret system og DFDS et in-house, har opgaven været særlig stor, og her er fortsat nogle enkelte ting, der skal samkøres. Men ellers er integrationen mellem de to selskaber gennemført, så vi nu er ét DFDS. Desuden har 2011 også budt på flere fremadrettede tiltag: Bl.a. købet af Baltic Scandinavian Lines-ruten mellem Estland og Sverige, den nyåbnede rute mellem Ust-Luga i Rusland og Kiel i Tyskland, implementering og udvikling af en ny scrubber, der skal fjerne svovl og partikler direkte fra skibenes skorstene, samt buddet på SeaFrance i Frankrig. DFDS har også indgået et unikt offentligt/privat partnerskab med det danske forsvar om at have fem specialbyggede skibe i deres flåde, der alle er modificeret til militære behov med bl.a. sideport, kraner og ekstra tanke. Skibene kan til hver en tid og ved særlige lejligheder stilles til rådighed for militæret. Det er ikke som sådan en integreret del af den normale forretning i DFDS, men samarbejdet giver fordele for begge parter. Alt i alt kan året beskrives som meget dynamisk. Vi har haft mange store udfordringer at kæmpe med, men samtidig har vi kunnet skabe succesfulde resultater. Vi har i vores tredje kvartal forudset et årsresultat på ca. 700 millioner kroner, hvilket er noget bedre end forventningerne ved årets begyndelse, siger Niels Smedegaard. Udfordringerne lige nu klares via The DFDS Way Om at befinde sig i et marked, som konstant er underlagt mange udfordringer, påpeger Niels Smedegaard: Vi skal hele tiden være konkurrencedygtige i forhold til kunderne; Hvad kan optimeres, og hvad kan gøres anderledes? Så efter at have haft betydelig fokus mod at integrere Norfolkline og DFDS, så rettes det fulde fokus nu mod kunderne. Niels Smedegaard forklarer: Vi arbejder lige nu med at rulle et stort kundeprojekt ud, hvor vi laver et omfattende kundetilfredshedsprogram. Vi vil analysere og undersøge kundernes behov og sætte dem i fokus. Herudover driver vi The DFDS Way ; et program, der dækker over de særlige egenskaber, der kendetegner DFDS. Hvis man havde samme mærke og type, vil man kunne dele dem mellem terminalerne, når der var behov for det, og der kan indgås større og mere gunstige indkøbsog vedligeholdsaftaler med leverandørerne. Eller hvorfor ikke samle mindre funktioner sammen i større enheder, når man nu har muligheden? 11 Om fonden/about the foundation DFDS A/S operates northern Europe s largest integrated logistics and shipping network and has 55 vessels trafficking freight and passenger routes in the Baltic Sea, the North Sea and the English Channel. The company also operates associated port terminals and incorporates logistics activities in the form of trailer and railway transport and warehousing services across a large part of Europe. DFDS has around 5,000 employees and the company s annual sales total more than DKK 11 billion. CEO and President Niels Smedegaard outlines the main events and initiatives of For DFDS, 2011 was yet another in a line of eventful and challenging years. In 2010 the shipping company acquired Norfolkline, a move that altered the character of the organisation significantly. We became a different type of business after that. Our logistics division became bigger and we grew overall. We now had more employees, new market areas and we needed to make adjustments in individual areas as a result, says Niels Smedegaard. It became clear early on in 2011 that there were problems in the Irish Sea market and the highly unprofitable RO-RO routes in this area have now finally been divested or closed. One of the major, most important tasks for the year was the integration of DFDS and Norfolkline, which has surpassed expectations. Integrating a business that accounts for 70 per cent of your size is no easy feat. Niels Smedegaard explains: In many respects we were two entirely different organisations. We have had to work together to build a new, more dynamic structure in order to be able to integrate Norfolkline into DFDS successfully while building a stronger, more flexible organisation better equipped for integrating other companies and establishing new business areas in the future. The new structure was implemented with the help of work groups for each individual area. The work groups, which comprised employees from both DFDS and Norfolkline, began their analysis and planning work months before the merger took place. Together they identified solutions that were assessed by a management group committee and subsequently implemented when the organisations merged. This way, we created a new company together and a process that we had originally estimated would take three years was basically completed in just 18 months with great success. Norfolkline had outsourced the operation of its IT system while DFDS managed its system in-house. This complicated integration and there are still individual areas that need to be coordinated. Apart from this, the two companies have now been fully integrated, making us one DFDS. There have also been many progressive developments in For instance, the acquisition of Baltic Scandinavian Lines route between Estonia and Sweden, the newly opened route between Ust-Luga in Russia and Kiel in Germany, the introduction and development of a new scrubber for the removal of sulphur and particles from the vessels emissions and the bid for French company SeaFrance. DFDS has also entered into a unique public/private partnership with the Danish Armed Forces. According to the agreement, DFDS s fleet shall include five specially-constructed vessels modified to military requirements, featuring sideports, cranes and additional fuel tanks. DFDS shall be able to put these ships at the disposal of the Armed Forces at any time and under special circumstances. It is not an integrated part of DFDS s business as such, but the collaboration benefits both parties. Overall, 2011 can be described as a highly dynamic year. We have had to overcome many major challenges, but we have also been able to create positive results. In the third quarter we predicted an annual profit of around DKK 700 million, which is somewhat better than the forecasts at the start of the year, says Niels Smedegaard. Current challenges are handled The DFDS Way On the topic of operating in a market that is constantly subjected to a variety of challenges, Niels Smedegaard remarks: We must always offer our customers a competitive deal. What can be optimised and what can be done differently? Having focused heavily on the integration of Norfolkline and DFDS up until this point, the spotlight is now turned on the organisation s customers. Niels Smedegaard explains: We are currently rolling out a major customer-focused project and creating an extensive customer satisfaction programme. We wish to analyse and assess our customers needs and make sure that our focus is on them. In addition, we are implementing The DFDS Way, a programme covering the features that characterise DFDS. These include the company s constant endeavours to improve the business performance, the use of best practice to optimise the organisation based on the most appropriate model and make more use of DFDS s size. And last, but by no means least, a growing customer focus. Being able to utilise its size is a challenge that DFDS has been tackling on an ongoing basis. Why, for example, are not all terminals equipped with the same loading equipment? Operators with the same brand and type could share equipment when required. This would enable the signing of larger and more beneficial purchase and maintenance agreements with suppliers. Or why not gather smaller functions in larger units, now that this possibility exists? DFDS has already made such changes, both in the technical organisation and in certain sales and booking areas and call centres.

Lige netop det marked er ekstremt konkurrencepræget, med store operatører som P&O og Eurotunnel og med et SeaFrance, der er gået konkurs, ser vi nu muligheder for at tilføre et nyt ben, Dover-Calais, til vores service Dover-Dunkerque, siger Niels Smedegaard. Samtidig har et andet projekt i logistikdivisionen vendt resultaterne markant med en forbedring i indtjeningen på 100 millioner kr. primært med projektet Headlight. Det er gjort ved hele tiden at tænke forbedringer ind i alle processer: Hvordan købes kørsel ind? Hvordan kan vi reducere tom kørsel? Hvordan sikrer vi, at kunderne betaler til tiden? Har vi kundeaftaler, der er tabsgivende? Hvordan kan vi sikre, at alle anvender det, der har vist sig at være best practice?, fortæller Niels Smedegaard. På miljøområdet er der sket flere ting. Bl.a. har DFDS udnævnt en decideret Miljøchef, der netop nu er optaget af arbejdet med en CSR rapport for DFDS. Endnu et tiltag, DFDS er stolt af i 2011, er svovlscrubberen, som i samarbejde med teknologivirksomheden Alfa Laval er udviklet og testet i 2011 og som den første i verden er i drift på et stort skibs hovedmotor. Dette tiltag sigter mod at håndtere de nye og meget stramme svovlregler for skibe, der træder i kraft i 2015, siger Niels Smedegaard. Scrubberen fjerner svovl og partikler fra røgen, der kommer fra skibenes skorstenssystem, som scrubberen rent fysisk er indbygget i. Vi tror på, at der kan findes andre langsigtede løsninger som i en kombination med en tilpasning af regelsættet, tidsplanen for implementeringen og andre tekniske løsninger vil kunne være et meningsfyldt kompromis til de nye regler, forklarer Niels Smedegaard. Forskelle i markedet Vi mærker selvfølgelig også en vis afmatning i markedet. Mange af vores kunder mærker jo en faldende efterspørgsel i visse markeder, bl.a. har vi på Nordsøen set en relativ flad udvikling og ikke den volumenvækst, vi tidligere har set. Til gengæld har vi, som det fremgår af vores regnskab fra tredje kvartal, også set pæne vækstrater på mellem 10 og 15 pct. i Østersøen, siger Niels Smedegaard. Visionen for 2012 Vi skal arbejde videre i henhold til The DFDS Way. Det vil sige, at vi skal bruge de måder at arbejde og være på, som positivt kendetegner DFDS, med fuld fokus på vores kunder. Our greatest source of pride As far as 2011 is concerned, we are proud of having managed to create profits in a time that has been challenging for businesses, says Niels Smedegaard. The passenger department, which was lagging behind in terms of earnings in 2009, has shaped up considerably. We are also proud of having struck while the iron was hot and managing to create new routes when we had the opportunity to do so. We met with Prime Minister Putin when he visited Denmark to secure the political support required to open new routes to Russia, a country with significant oil reserves which represents one of the strongest eastern markets. DFDS has experienced success in challenging times, which is something we re very proud of, concludes Niels Smedegaard. DFDS is also tightening up its organisation through an optimisation project for the Dover-Dunkirk route in the English Channel. At the moment the market is extremely competitive with major operators such as P&O and Eurotunnel and with SeaFrance about to enter into liquidation, we have thus identified an opportunity to add a new leg, Dover-Calais, to our Dover-Dunkirk service, says Niels Smedegaard. In addition, the Headlight project in the logistics division has had a significant impact on profits and resulted in an increase in earnings totalling DKK 100 million. We have achieved this by always thinking in terms of how we can improve our processes: How are runs sourced? How can we reduce the number of empty runs? How can we make sure that our customers pay us on time? Do we have customer agreements that are unprofitable? A further environmental initiative introduced by DFDS in 2011 was the sulphur scrubber that was developed and tested in collaboration with technology company Alfa Laval. The scrubber is the first of its kind in operation in the main engine of a large vessel. This measure aims to meet the new, stringent sulphur emission requirements for ships that will come into force in 2015, explains Niels Smedegaard. The scrubber is built into the vessel s chimney system and removes sulphur and particles from the system s emissions. We believe that there may be other, long-term solutions that, in combination with an adaptation of the regulatory framework, implementation schedule and other technical solutions, could represent a useful compromise with regard to the new rules, explains Niels Smedegaard. The 2012 vision We shall continue to work in The DFDS Way. This means that we shall employ the methods of working and acting that characterise DFDS positively, focusing fully on our customers. Our aim for 2012 is to continue to develop our strategy for becoming the leader of the market consolidation process and a leading provider of integrated shipping and logistics solutions in Europe, concludes Niels Smedegaard. A difference in the market Naturally, we are also seeing a slow-down in the market as many of our customers are affected by falling demand in some areas. One example of this is the North Sea area which has shown relatively stagnant development recently in contrast to the volume growth that we saw previously. In return, and as evidenced by our Q3 figures, we have seen strong growth rates of between 10 and 15 per cent in the Baltic Sea, explains Niels Smedegaard.

Blokkene kan også anvendes til konstruktion af støjværn ved eksempelvis motorveje eller jernbaner og er faktisk det mest effektive byggemateriale, der findes i Europa til at absorbere støj. Tilmed er blokkene miljørigtigt fremstillet af 80 pct. genbrugstræ og kun 20 pct. cement. I slutningen af 2010 blev hele det britiske byggeregulativ revideret. Det blev påkrævet, at isolationsmateriale til bygning af vægge skulle leve op til langt højere standarder end hidtil. Fornem anerkendelse I slutningen af 2011 modtog Durisol en fornem anerkendelse fra The National House Building Corporation (NHBC) for sine byggeblokke i kombination med standardpuds. NHBC er en organisation, der stiller lånegaranti for 80 pct. af alle nye boligbygningsprojekter i UK, og Durisols byggeblokke er den første moderne konstruktionsmetode, der høster den slags anerkendelse i landet. Han siger dog, at recessionen tilskynder til mere konservatisme i industrien, der ikke er særlig fordelagtig, men det tilskynder alligevel til, at myndighederne udsteder nye regulativer, som i sidste ende kan blive en fordel for Durisol. Durisol vil fortsat bevise sit værd Visionen for 2012 er enkel. 15 Om fonden/about the foundation British company Durisol produces sustainable building blocks for use in the construction of all sorts of outer and inner walls in homes and commercial properties. The blocks can also be used for noise reduction by motorways or railways. In fact, it is the most effective noise absorbing construction material on the European market. Furthermore, the blocks are environmentally friendly, comprising 80 per cent recycled wood and just 20 per cent cement. The entire regulatory framework for the British construction industry was revised at the end of Pursuant to the revised regulations, insulation materials used in walls must now meet far more stringent standards than in the past. Even though the process of implementing the new regulations has been rather slow, the market has now realised that eco-friendly building blocks are the way forward for the construction industry, which has benefited Durisol. That is why we nearby doubled our turnover with GBP 550,000 in In addition, 2011 has also shown us that Durisol s opportunities and the market for our products are far greater than the financial figures have indicated so far, notes David Winduss, MD of Durisol. He outlines the main events of the past year and the company s future challenges below. Leading by example Our main challenge at the moment is to show the market that we are capable of providing solutions that meet the requirements of the revised construction regulations and to prove to a somewhat conservative industry that the use of Durisol s blocks does not entail any additional costs or risks, explains Winduss. Durisol currently has a portfolio of more than 100 finished construction projects in the UK, the majority of which are single-family homes, small schools and public buildings. The challenge lies in using these examples to show the industry that Durisol is ready to take on larger construction projects, including more residential buildings. If we could supply just one per cent of the British housing market, we would achieve sales of GBP five million and have significant reserves, remarks Winduss. Distinguished recognition At the end of 2011, Durisol received the approval of The National House Building Corporation (NHBC) for its building blocks in combination with standard plaster. NHBC pledges loan warranties for 80 per cent of all new construction projects in the UK and Durisol s blocks are the first ever modern construction method to be granted this type of approval in the country. We have also finished one of the first ever office buildings in the UK to be accorded Passivhaus status. This title is granted to buildings that regulate their indoor climate without the use of heating or cooling systems; a unique form of sustainable construction that focuses 100 per cent on the environment, says Winduss. One of the UK s leading construction companies, Interserve, also participated in the project. An added burden for investors We remain a very small organisation competing for a share of a very large market. Our challenges differ from those that have characterised the more established companies in our industry as a result of the crisis, explains Winduss. However, he points out that the recession is stimulating conservatism within the industry, which is not very positive even though it does mean that the authorities issue new regulatory frameworks that may eventually end up benefiting Durisol. At present, however, the construction industry cannot obtain financial backing from banks, meaning that the burden on Durisol s share investors increases. Durisol will continue to prove itself The vision for 2012 is simple. Before the end of the year, Durisol will have proved that it can supply large, commercial construction projects and housing projects comprising at least 20 houses. We also aim for our business to be seen as an important stakeholder in the field of eco-friendly construction before the end of the year and to develop the capacity to be able to supply the construction industry to a much greater degree in the future, says Winduss. For the company s top management, Durisol s financial independence is naturally an important priority. If this becomes reality in 2012, the year will be a success and the company will have a solid foundation for further development.

16 NanoNord A/S Godt på vej mod en milliardforretning/ NanoNord A/S Well on the way to being worth billions Gennem de seneste godt fem år har NanoNord A/S samarbejdet med Aarhus Universitet og Højteknologifonden om at udvikle et mobilt måleapparat baseret på lavfelts NMR, Nuclear Magnetic Resonance. Det er en spektroskopisk metode, der bygger på atomkerners spin og bruges til at undersøge molekylers struktur og deres rumlige elektroniske opbygninger. Teknologien har mange anvendelsesområder; Fokus i NanoNord er lige nu at få introduceret produktet CatGuard til markedet. Det sker i et industriområde lidt uden for Aalborg, hvor den højteknologiske virksomhed har til huse. En virksomhed, der så dagens lys i 2002, fordi ingeniør og iværksætter Ole Jensen mente, der skulle ske noget nyt i hans liv og derfor investerede i en hel fabrik inden for nanoteknologi. Her beretter han om udviklingen, fremtidsperspektiverne og mulighederne for NanoNord. I august 2010 tog NanoNord en beslutning om at ændre sin strategi og virksomhed. Tidligere var NanoNord specifikt fokuseret på udviklingen af Lab-On-A-Ship. Et system der kunne monitorere og analysere brændstof, smøreolie og røggasemissioner. Nu er fokus rettet udelukkende mod oliesensoren CatGuard. Det er en maskine, hvor basisteknologien er udviklet i samarbejde med Aarhus Universitet via midler fra Højteknologifonden. CatGuard måler mængden af catfines (catalytic fines) i bunkerolien, der bruges på skibene. Catfines beskrives bedst som en slags fint sand, der ikke blander sig eller integrerer sig med olien. Det kan lægge sig ligesom sand på bunden i olietanken; hvis det kommer ind i motoren i for store mængder, så kan det forårsage store skader og i sidste ende et nedbrud, forklarer Ole Jensen. I dag har skibene en maskine ombord, der bør rense olien ned til det eksisterende krav på 15 parts per million (ppm), som er det maksimale motoren kan tåle. Industrien leverer olien med op til ppm til skibene i dag, og der findes ikke et system, der kan monitorere on-line for catfine indhold, og om de eksisterende krav rent faktisk bliver overholdt. Skibene ved reelt set ikke, om det rensesystem, de benytter til olien, overhovedet fungerer. Som Ole Jensen beskriver det: De ved det først, når motoren eksploderer. CatGuard kan overvåge både før og efter rensningen og vise, om det nu er det rigtige niveau, der måles i olien, og systemet sender resultaterne løbende via satellit. Det betyder, at virksomhedens hovedkontor fra land kan monitorere, om skibenes olierensning foregår optimalt. Det er den del af virksomheden, NanoNord nu satser 100 pct. på. De teknologiske udfordringer står i kø 2011 har derfor været fyldt med teknologiske udfordringer. Teknologien bag maskinen er uhyre avanceret, og Ole Jensen har flere gange fået at vide, at det ikke kan lade sig gøre at udvikle den på så kort tid. Men efter i 2011 kun at have fokuseret på at få denne teknologi til at spille helt perfekt for CatGuard, har det nu vist sig at give pote. Vi vidste godt, at det ville koste tid og ressourcer at gøre dette færdigt til perfektion, men vi har ageret som en ren teknologivirksomhed siden 2006, og det har båret frugt. Vi kan nu med sikkerhed sige, at måleapparatet virker, siger Ole Jensen. Produktionen er derfor næste store udfordring for NanoNord. CatGuard er et meget avanceret og komplekst produkt, og der indgår mange forskellige enheder i samlingen af det. Vi skal have integreret produktionen, så den falder i hak. På den måde kan vi få produceret 100 stk. i år og måske avancere til næste år. Men det har virkelig givet nye udfordringer rent ingeniørmæssigt at få samlet CatGuard. Vi havde en række ambitioner for, hvad maskinen rent teknologisk skulle kunne, og dem har vi løbende arbejdet med og forbedret. I dag er maskinen faktisk væsentligt mindre i både højde og drøjde end udgangspunktet, siger Ole Jensen. Salget af CatGuard er dog en af de udfordringer, der vejer tungest for NanoNord. Ole Jensen forklarer således Det er mig, der er drivende kraft på salgsområdet, og mig der skal ud og gøre opmærksom på produktet. Selvfølgelig skal vi ikke have hele verden som kunder fra starten, men vi skal i gang med at generere noget omsætning. Ole Jensen er dog sikker på, at CatGuard kan sælges. Også forsikringsselskaber har vist stor interesse for maskinen, der dokumenteret kan forhindre store og omkostningstunge maskinskader; på længere sigt kunne det blive en anordning, der skulle skrives ind i forsikringspolicen hos rederierne. Det er et produkt, vi tror på, og det er kommet for at blive, fastslår Ole Jensen. Masser af anvendelsesmuligheder Ole Jensen er begejstret for NanoNords nye strategi og retning. CatGuard har en palet af anvendelsesmuligheder og et kæmpe potentiale for skibsfarten og rederierne til on-line målinger af mange andre kritiske parametre. CatGuard åbner dørene til en ny teknologi. Funktionerne kan på mange måder sammenlignes med en MR-scanning på et hospital, der på samme måde som CatGuards funktion er baseret på NMR-metoden. 17 Om fonden/about the foundation In the past five years, NanoNord has been collaborating with Aarhus University and the Danish National Advanced Technology Foundation to develop a mobile measuring device based on low field Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR). NMR is a spectroscopic method based on the spin of atomic nuclei that is used to investigate the structure of molecules and their spatial electronic structures. The technology has multiple uses and at present NanoNord s focus is on introducing its machine based on this method, known as CatGuard, to the market. This process is underway at an industrial estate just outside Aalborg, where the technology company is based. NanoNord was formed in 2002 when engineer and entrepreneur Ole Jensen felt that his life needed new direction and invested in a nanotechnology factory. Ole Jensen talks about NanoNord s development, future outlook and opportunities below. In August 2010, NanoNord decided to change its strategy and business focus. Previously, the company had focused specifically on the development of Lab-On-A-Ship - a system that monitors and analyses fuel, lubrication oils and flue gas emissions. At present, however, NanoNord is focusing exclusively on the CatGuard oil sensor. CatGuard is based on the technology developed by Aarhus University with the aid of funds from the Danish National Advanced Technology Foundation and measures the volume of cat fines (catalytic fines) in the bunker oil used on the ships. Cat fines can be described as a type of fine sand that does not blend or integrate with the oil. It can settle like sand on the bottom of the oil tanker, and if large quantities enter the engine this could cause major damage and eventually breakdown, explains Ole Jensen. The ships are currently equipped with a machine whose job is to cleanse the oil to meet the requirement of 15 parts per million (ppm), which is the maximum that the engine can handle. At present, the industry delivers oil with up to ppm to ships and there is no system for monitoring the cat fines content online, or for ensuring that the current requirements are met. In reality, the ships cannot be certain that their oil cleansing system actually works. In the words of Ole Jensen: They won t know a thing until the engine explodes. CatGuard can monitor cat fines both before and after cleansing and determine whether the oil contains the correct level. The system then reports the results on an ongoing basis via satellite. It is thus possible to monitor and ensure optimum oil cleansing from land-based company headquarters. NanoNord is now focusing 100 per cent on this aspect of the business. A strong line-up of technological challenges There has been no shortage of technological challenges in The technology behind the machine is incredibly advanced and Ole Jensen had repeatedly been told that it cannot be developed in such a short space of time. However, the company spent 2011 focusing solely on adjusting this technology to suit CatGuard perfectly and this strategy is now showing results. We were well aware that it would take time and resources to finish and perfect the product. However, we have been operating as a pure-play technology business since 2006 and this has now borne fruit. We can now say for certain that the measuring device works, says Ole Jensen. The next major challenge for NanoNord is getting CatGuard into production. CatGuard is a highly advanced and complex product made up of a large number of different units. We need to integrate production so that all the pieces fall into place. This way we will be able to produce 100 machines this year and perhaps 1,000 next year. However, assembling CatGuard has also represented new challenges in terms of engineering. We had a series of ambitions with regard to what we wanted the machine to be capable of technically, which we have adapted and improved over time. Today, the machine is significantly smaller both in terms of height and width than initially projected, explains Ole Jensen. The sale of CatGuard is nevertheless one of NanoNord s most difficult challenges. Ole Jensen explains: I am the driving force in the sales field and I am the one who needs to get out there to market the product. Of course, we can t expect to have a very large number of clients at the very beginning, but we do need to start making money. Ole Jensen is nevertheless convinced that there is a market for CatGuard. Insurance companies have also shown great interest in the machine as it can help prevent major and costly machine damage and, in the longer term, the device could be incorporated into shipping companies insurance policies. We believe in this product, and it is here to stay, confirms Ole Jensen. Multiple uses Ole Jensen is also excited about NanoNord s new strategy and direction. CatGuard has a wide range of uses and offers the maritime industry and shipping companies excellent opportunities for measuring several critical parameters. CatGuard opens the doors to new technology. Its functions can in many ways be likened to those of MR scans used in hospitals, which are also based on the NMR method. Unlike the hospital s equipment, however, our technology does not cost DKK 100 million but approximately EUR 35-40,000, explains Ole Jensen.

Men de store rederier, der tænker langsigtet og har klaret sig igennem krisen uden for mange knubs, står stadig som meget interesserede aftagere af CatGuard. NanoNord står heldigvis ikke i en situation, hvor vi skal sælge 500 stk. af vores produkt for at få det til at løbe rundt; som sagt er vi meget tilfredse, hvis vi kan sælge 100 det første år, hvor vi fokuserer på salg, siger Ole Jensen. Vi skal bare have fokus på målet og strategien, som den er nu. Vi har ikke statens støtte i ryggen mere, men vi skal vise overfor os selv og aktionærerne, at det forskningsprojekt, staten gav støtte til i 2006, er blevet en succes og kommer på markedet, også selvom udgangspunktet for projektet i starten var Lab-On- A-Ship-løsningen. CatGuard er unikt og kan samtidig skabe besparelser, forøge sikkerheden og reducere nedetid for kunderne, det, tror jeg, er parametre, der er vigtige i en krisetid, som den vi befinder os i nu, siger Ole Jensen. Lyse fremtidsudsigter 2012 skal som nævnt bruges på udfordringerne med salg og produktion og på at få skabt en rentabel virksomhed, der kan betale sine investorer. Jeg tror fuldt og fast på, at der ligger fem mia. kr. i det her projekt henover de næste ti år, fastslår Ole Jensen. I slutningen af 2011 har NanoNord indgivet patentansøgning på CatGuard. Det er jo en helt ny måde at måle Catfines på. Det har vi nu registreret og sendt til Patentstyrelsen. Der er selvfølgelig ingen garanti for, at vi får patentet, men vi har lavet mange forundersøgelser, og segmentet er stadig meget åbent. Vi satser virkelig på, at det går igennem, siger Ole Jensen. Det vil være en kæmpe force at have patentet på plads for NanoNord. Det vil styrke forretningsplanen yderligere og sætte de sidste ting på plads for virksomheden. Det er nu, vi skal ud over rampen med vores produkt bliver et virkelig spændende, men bestemt også udfordrende år, siger Ole Jensen og lyder som en mand, der er mere end klar til udfordringerne. Savings in times of crisis The maritime sector has been hit hard by the crisis, which has become apparent to NanoNord in its dialogue with shipping companies. However, the large companies that have a long-term outlook and that have coped well with the crisis remain very interested in CatGuard. Luckily, NanoNord is not in a position where it needs to sell 500 units in order to make ends meet. As I already mentioned, we will be very pleased if we manage to sell 100 in our first year of focusing on sales, says Ole Jensen. We just need to focus on the target and the strategy in its current form. We no longer have the government s support, but we will prove to ourselves and our shareholders that the research project that the government funded in 2006 was a success and led to the product being introduced in the market, even if the initial starting point was the Lab-On-A-Ship solution. CatGuard is unique and can help our customers cut costs, improve security and reduce downtime, all of which are important features in these times of economic hardship, explains Ole Jensen. A bright outlook As previously mentioned, the main focus in 2012 will be on the challenges associated with sales and production and creating a profitable business capable of paying back its investors. I fully believe that DKK five billion can be made from this project over the next ten years, states Ole Jensen. NanoNord submitted a patent application for CatGuard at the end of What we have now registered and submitted to the Danish Patent and Trademark Office is an entirely new way of measuring cat fines. There is of course no guarantee that the patent will be granted, but we have performed several pre-analyses and the segment remains very open. We are definitely focusing on the patent being granted, says Ole Jensen. Having the patent in place would represent a major advantage for NanoNord as it would strengthen the business plan further and make the last pieces of the puzzle fall into place for the organisation. This is where we begin to launch our product. 19 Grundforskning møder skibsindustrien/ Pure research meets the shipping industry Om fonden/about the foundation Videnskabelig ekspertise og innovation mødes i stærk forening i samarbejdet mellem Aarhus Universitet og NanoNord A/S om udviklingen af måleapparatet CatGuard til detektion af catfines i bunkerolie. Målet er online kvalitetskontrol af bunker- og smøreolie på skibene. Det handler om at monitorere vigtige parametre for kvaliteten af olien direkte på skibet i stedet for som hidtil at tage prøver, som sendes til et laboratorium, hvorefter man må vente på svaret. Herved kan man reducere slitage og nedbrud på skibsmotorerne. Kernen i projektet er ikke-destruktive målinger ved hjælp af NMR, kernemagnetisk resonans spektroskopi, der gør det muligt at få detaljeret information om oliekvaliteten. NMR-apparater er normalt både meget store og ekstremt dyre. De anvendes i øjeblikket primært indenfor hospitals- og forskningsverdenen til højt specialiserede studier af molekylers struktur og opførsel. Fx. anvendes de i forskning, der skal forklare mekanismerne bag sygdomme som Alzheimers og demens generelt, forskning der bidrager til udviklingen af energivenlig cement eller udvikling af nye avancerede nanomaterialer. Forskning fra Aarhus Universitet er i verdensklasse indenfor både udvikling og anvendelse af NMR-metoder. Vi arbejder på at udvikle NMR-udstyr, der er meget mindre og i en helt anden prisklasse end de gængse NMR-apparater, som blandt andet kræver en dyr, superledende magnet, siger Niels Christian Nielsen, professor på Aarhus Universitet og leder af inano og inspin centrene. Udviklingen af CatGuard-produktet viser, at NMR er meget andet end dyrt laboratorieudstyr. Der er masser af grundforskning involveret i at lave en mobil NMR-sensor. Med CatGuard projektet er det lykkedes at producere et højteknologisk måleinstrument, der kan fremstilles til en fornuftig pris og derved gøre det realistisk at udnytte de mange muligheder med NMR i industrien. Scientific expertise and innovation join forces in the collaboration between Aarhus University and NanoNord A/S to develop the CatGuard measuring device for detecting cat fines in bunker oil. The aim is to offer online quality control of the bunker and lubrication oil used by the ships. CatGuard monitors various parameters important to oil quality, directly aboard the ship. There is no need to take samples, send these to a lab and wait for the answers to come back, as was the case up until now. CatGuard makes it possible to reduce wear and breakdowns in ship engines. The cornerstone of the project is non-destructive measurement using Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) spectroscopy to obtain detailed oil quality information. NMR machines are normally both very large and very expensive. At the moment they are mainly used in the fields of medicine and research to perform highly specialised studies of molecular structure and behaviour. They are, for example, used in research aimed at explaining the mechanisms behind Alzheimer s disease and dementia in general, the development of eco-friendly cement or new and advanced nano materials. The research performed at Aarhus University is world class, both with regard to development and use of NMR methods. We are working to develop NMR equipment that is much smaller and much more affordable than standard machines, which also require the use of a costly, super conducting magnet, says Niels Christian Nielsen, professor at Aarhus University and head of the inano and inspin centres. The development of the CatGuard product shows that NMR is much more than just an expensive piece of laboratory equipment. Extensive pure research has been involved in the creation of a mobile NMR sensor. The CatGuard project has succeeded at producing a high-tech measuring instrument that can be manufactured at a reasonable price, thus making it possible to leverage the many opportunities that NMR could offer to the industry. 20 Hårfin præcision CatGuard er baseret på en mobil NMR-sensor, der er i stand til at måle meget små mængder catfines. Herved kan det løbende kontrolleres, at indholdet ikke overstiger den anbefalede grænseværdi, som motorerne kan tåle, normalt 15 mg catfines per kg olie. Således kan motorernes levetid forlænges og kostbare nedbrud undgås til gavn for både miljøet og omkostningsniveauet. Koncentrationerne er lave, så det er en stor udfordring at opnå den nødvendige målepræcision. Det gælder om at øge den signalintensitet, der måles i forhold til den støj, der altid vil komme med på en sådan måling. En af metoderne til dette er at designe eksperimenter ved anvendelse af den såkaldte optimal kontrolteori, der er en optimeringsmetode udviklet indenfor økonomien. Dette giver muligheder for mere præcise og hurtige målinger. Et hav af muligheder Eksperimenterne, der udnyttes i CatGuard, er skræddersyede til at måle de små variationer i catfines, der kan være katastrofale for skibsmotorerne. Fokusområdet i projektet har hele tiden været at sikre præcision og stabilitet af målingerne indenfor en rimelig eksperimenttid. Målinger af catfines er dog ikke den eneste mulighed med denne udvikling. Anvendelsesmulighederne for mobilt NMR-udstyr er store. Med de høje omkostninger og den store ekspertise, der i dag kræves for at bruge NMR-apparater, har det tidligere kun været forskningsinstitutioner, hospitaler og store specialiserede virksomheder, der har haft mulighed for at bruge NMR som analyseværktøj. Med langt billigere og mere brugervenlige, specialiserede NMR-sensorer øges tilgængeligheden enormt. Mobile NMR-sensorer kan sikre en løbende automatiseret kontrol af kvalitet og overholdelse af grænseværdier direkte på store volumener uden at skulle tage repræsentative prøver eller lignende og uden at skulle vente på svar fra et eksternt laboratorium. Foruden målinger af catfines og andre parametre i bunker- og smøreolie som for eksempel vand-, jern-, natrium- og vanadiumindhold kan den opnåede ekspertise fra udviklingen af CatGuardsensoren udnyttes til lignende instrumenter til anvendelser i blandt andet vindmølleindustrien, fødevareindustrien, på rensningsanlæg og i landbruget. I mødet mellem universitet og industri, ekspertise og innovation, er der således opnået resultater med brede perspektiver for det fremtidige samarbejde, siger Niels Christian Nielsen. Extreme precision CatGuard is based on a mobile NMR sensor capable of measuring very small levels of cat fines. It is possible to continuously ensure that the cat fines content does not exceed the limit value imposed for what engines can withstand; normally 15mg of cat fines per kilo of oil. This can help extend engine lifetimes and prevent costly breakdowns, benefiting both the environment and the company s finances. The concentrations are so low that achieving the required precision is a major challenge. The signal intensity measured must be increased beyond the noise that always accompanies such measurements. One of the ways of achieving this is to design experiments based on optimal control theory, an optimisation method developed for use in economics. This makes it possible to achieve more precise measurements more quickly. A sea of opportunities The tests used in CatGuard have been tailored to measure small cat fines variations that could have a disastrous impact on the ship engines. The focus of the project has constantly been to ensure precision and stability in the measurements within a reasonable experiment time. Cat fines measurement is nevertheless not the only application for this development. There are numerous uses for mobile NMR technology. Due to the high associated costs and the level of expertise required to operate NMR machines today, use of the technology as an analysis tool has been reserved for research institutions, hospitals and large, specialised organisations. Far more affordable and more userfriendly, specialised NMR sensors would make the technology far more accessible. Mobile NMR sensors can ensure continuous, automatic quality control and limit value compliance for large volumes without the need for test samples or similar and there s no need to wait for an external lab to send back the results. Aside from measuring cat fines and other parameters in bunker and lubrication oils such as water, iron, sodium and vanadium content, the expertise gained from the development of the CatGuard sensor can also be used in similar instruments used in, for example, wind power, food industries, water treatment plants or agriculture.
