3 Press Release_UK PRESS RELEASE SUPERKILEN SHOWS ITS COLORS THIS AUTUMN The urban park by BIG + TOPOTEK1 + SUPERFLEX conceived as a giant exhibition of urban best practice by incorporating everyday objects from more than 60 different cultures, constitutes a rare fusion of architecture, landscape and art. The kilometer long urban park wedges through the Nørrebro area just north of the Copenhagen city center, creating a different yet unifying space in one of the most ethnically diverse and socially challenged neighborhoods in Denmark. The aim of the invited competition initiated by the City of Copenhagen and Realdania Foundation back in 2005 was to create a truly unique urban space with a strong identity on a local and global scale. The 13.4 million euro development started construction in 2009 and opened to the public in June Superkilen is divided into three color-coded areas, each with a distinct atmospheric and functional condition: the large and expansive red square which serves as an extension of the adjacent sports hall offering a range of recreational and cultural activities; the black square as the heart of the Superkilen where locals can meet by the Moroccan fountain or a game of chess; and a linear green stretch as a natural meeting place for large-scale sports activities providing vantage points over the surroundings. The three areas form the backdrop to the surrealist collection of global urban diversity of more than 100 objects from 60 cultures which reflect the true nature of the local neighborhood. The objects were selected through an intensive curatorial process in close collaboration with the local population. Rather than a public outreach process towards the lowest common denominator or a politically correct post rationalization of preconceived ideas navigated around any potential public resistance we proposed public participation as the driving force of the design leading towards the maximum freedom of expression. By transforming public procedure into proactive proposition we curated a park for the people by the people peer to peer design literally implemented. Bjarke Ingels, Founding Partner, BIG. The objects ranging from exercise gear, including muscle beach LA to sewage drains from Israel, palm trees from China and neon signs from Qatar and Russia are all accompanied by a small stainless plate inlaid in the ground describing each of the objects and their origin. When our team was invited to propose a project in this neighborhood we realized that we had to do more than just urban design. Rather than plastering the urban area with Danish designs we decided to gather the local intelligence and global experience to create a display of global urban best practice comprising the best that each of the 60 different cultures and countries have to offer when it comes to urban furniture. The Copenhagen-based art group Superflex took the public participation further into the extreme by handpicking five groups of people and travelling to the country of their origin to document the process of selection. Our mission was to fi nd the big picture in the extreme detail of a personal memory or story, which on the

4 surface might appear insignificant, but once hunted down and enlarged became super big. A distant Mediterranean fl irt in the seventies symbolised by a great iron bull, hunted down and raised on a hill in the park., SUPERFLEX Throughout the Superkilen red maple, Japanese cherry trees, larix, palm trees from China and Lebanese cedar trees are planted to offer more shade and vegetative interest, augmenting the existing trees. The diversity in tree and plant species complements the diversity of the site furniture. While the Romantic Gardens of the 19th Century attempted to give the visitors an exotic experience of the world that was still big and hard to travel around allowing people to witness a Chinese pagoda or a Greek temple the Super Park in Copenhagen does the opposite. Rather than perpetuating a perception of Denmark as a mono-ethnic people, the Super Park portrays a true sample of the cultural diversity of contemporary Copenhagen, Martin-Rein Cano, Topotek1. A bike path runs through the entire park improving the infrastructure locally in the area while integrating it into the broader, citywide context.

5 Press Release_UK PRESS RELEASE SUPERKILEN HONORED BY AMERICAN INSTITUTE OF ARCHITECTS (AIA) Superkilen masterplan designed by BIG + Topotek1 + Superflex has a great start to 2013 receiving a 2013 AIA NATIONAL HONOR AWARD and a citation as the best Urban Design in the Annual Design Review of ARCHITECT magazine. At almost a mile long Superkilen wedges through one of the most ethnically diverse and socially challenged neighborhoods in Denmark creating a truly unique urban space with a strong identity on a local and global scale. The park is divided into three zones: the red square, the black market and the green park and is conceived as a giant exhibition of urban best practice - a collection of global everyday objects from the 60+ home countries of the local inhabitants. Initiated by the City of Copenhagen and Realdania Foundation, the project started construction in 2009 and opened to the public in June The American Institute of Architects (AIA) has selected Superkilen as one of the winners of the 2013 Institute Honor Awards, the profession s highest recognition of works that exemplify excellence in architecture, interior architecture and urban design. This project is a joy! This is not only original, but stunning to behold. It is noteworthy for its aesthetic approach, which is straightforwardly artifi cial rather than pretending to be natural. One of the project s most exciting dimensions is its inclusion of the diverse community of users. Its bold use of color and public art in spaces that promote social interaction and engagement all exude a high level of excitement and energy through what once looked like residual space. Superkilen shows what can be done with an open, inventive approach within severe cost limitations. It demonstrates the value of powerful visual and spatial moves while keeping connected to the realities of a contemporary multicultural context: the condition of many European cities. The form of the project grew from a community participation process that led to a clear identity and enjoyable series of spaces. As a formal expression it breaks down into pieces and fi ts very nicely into the scale of the surrounding area as an interesting patchwork Institute Honor Awards for Regional and Urban Design Jury. The Architect Magazine highlights Superkilen in their annual Design Review: There s an effort to represent each nationality living in the neighborhood through follies or specifi c programs that is a lot of bang for the buck at $34 per square foot. Elizabeth Ranieri The urban park is also nominated for the prestigious Designs of the Year 2013 award by the Design Museum in London. Superkilen and other nominated projects, including the Olympic Cauldron by Thomas Heatherwick and The Shard by Renzo Piano will be on show in an exhibition at the museum from 20 March to 7 July The winners will be announced in April. 10 Of cial Superkilen Book Superkilen Social Infrastructure Public Space through Social Interaction Arvinius Förlag is expanding its acclaimed list of architectural reference books with Superkilen Social Infrastructure. The book celebrates the dawn of a new type of urban public space. Superkilen is a kilometer long urban space wedging through one of the most ethnically diverse and socially challenged neighborhoods in Denmark. It has one overarching idea; that it is conceived as a giant exhibition of urban best practice. A sort of collection of global found objects from 60 different nationalities the 60 nationalities of the people inhabiting the area surrounding it ranging from exercise gear from muscle beach LA to sewage drains from Israel, palm trees from china and neon signs from Qatar and Russia. A sort of surrealist collection of global urban diversity that in fact reflects the true nature of the local neighborhood rather than perpetuating a petrified image of homogenous Denmark. Superkilen is a vehicle for integration enforcing local sentiments of ownership, while turning public participation into the driving force of design. The book s authors are BIG, Topotek 1 and Superflex in collaboration with editor Barbara Steiner. Barbara Steiner is an internationally recognized curator and author, currently working on a collaborative art project about Europe. From 2001 to 2010 she was the director of the Galerie für Zeitgenössische Kunst Leipzig. Editorial content will include edited text, as well as an interview between Steiner and the three authors of Superkilen. Conversation will focus on the processes of selecting the objects found in Superkilen and their curatorial meaning. The book will be designed by Rasmus Koch who has created the corporate identity for such prominent clients as Gyldendal, and has twice received the Danish Design Award. The book will be published by Arvinius Förlag run by Marie Arvinius who since 2004 has collaborated with leading book distributors in Europe, Asia and the USA. The publishing house takes part in the annual book fairs in Frankfurt and London, and has won several awards over the years. Honours include the Red Dot design award, Excellent Swedish Design, and Swedish Book Award. Superkilen Social Infrastructure will reach a wide audience targeting architects, landscape architects, artists and a general public interested in integration, cultural identity and territories, urban planning, cities and our multicultural society. In the most ethnically diverse part of Denmark boasting residents of more than 60 nationalities this narrow, 1-kilometer-long tract of land acknowledges this melting pot through collections of community-selected found objects that represent each culture. The architects at BIG arranged these items within a scheme of three brightly colored, and programmatically diverse, zones: the Black Market offers a space for dining al fresco, the Red There s an effort to represent each nationality living in the neighborhood through follies or specific programs that is a lot of bang for the buck at $34 per square foot. Elizabeth Ranieri Square encourages the sports activities held at the adjacent Nørrebrohall to spill outdoors, and the Green Park provides playing fields and bermed landscapes for family relaxation. BIG s design for the 323,000-square-foot site, completed on an extremely limited budget, delineates distinct zones through color coding, splashing every surface with its own hue, from murals on buildings, down to the gravel surrounding tree roots. The end product is an exaggerated urban garden, with bright colors that bring liveliness and activity into the public park. D.M.

Superkilen is the result of the creative collaboration between BIG, Topotek1 and SUPERFLEX, which constitutes a rare fusion of architecture, landscape architecture and art - from early concept to construction stage. A WORLD EXHIBITION AT NØRREBRO Superkilen is a park that supports diversity. It is a world exhibition of furniture and everyday objects from all over the world, including benches, lampposts, trash cans and plants requisites that every contemporary park should include and that the future visitors of the park have helped to select. Superkilen reattributes motifs from garden history. In the garden, the translocation of an ideal, the reproduction of another place, such as a far off landscape, is a common theme through time. As the Chinese reference the mountain ranges with the miniature rocks, the Japanese the ocean with their rippled gravel, or how the Greek ruins are showcased as replicas in the English gardens. Superkilen is a contemporary, urban version of a universal garden. THREE ZONES, THREE COLORS ONE NEIGHBORHOOD The conceptual starting point is a division of Superkilen into three zones and colors green, black and red. The different surfaces and colors are integrated to form new, dynamic surroundings for the everyday objects. The desire for more nature is met through a significant increase of vegetation and plants throughout the whole neighborhood arranged as small islands of diverse tree sorts, blossom periods, colors - and origin matching the one of surrounding everyday objects. TRAFFIC CONNECTIONS To create better and more transparent infrastructure throughout the neighborhood, the current bike paths will be reorganized, new connections linking to the surrounding neighborhoods are created, with emphasis on the connection to Mimersgade, where citizens have expressed desire for a bus passage. This transition concerns the whole traffic in the area at outer Norrebro and is a part of a greater infrastructure plan. Alternatives to the bus passage include signals, an extended middle lane or speed bumps. MARKET/CULTURE/SPORT THE RED SQUARE As an extension of the sports and cultural activities at the Norrebrohall, the Red Square is conceived as an urban extension of the internal life of the hall. A range of recreational offers and the large central square allows the local residents to meet each other through physical activity and games. The colored surface is integrated both in terms of colors and material with the Nørrebrohall and its new main entrance, where the surface merges inside and outside in the new foyer. Facades are incorporated visually in the project by following the color of the surface conceptually folding upwards and hereby creating a threedimensional experience. By the large facade towards Norrebrogade is an elevated open space, which almost like a tribune enables the visitors to enjoy the afternoon sun with a view. In addition to the cultural and sportsfacilities, the Red Square creates the setting for an urban marketplace which attracts visitors every weekend from Copenhagen and the suburbs. WLA #07 WLA #07

A large area on the square is covered by a multifunctional rubber surface to enable ballgames, markets, parades, and skating rinks in winter etc. The mobile tribunes of Norrebrohallen can be moved there for openair movie/sports presentations. The square towards East allows outdoor service from the café inside by the future main entrance. Towards North, the visitors will enjoy basketball courts, parking spaces and an outdoor fitness area. The red square is defined by a street in each end and building and fences along the sides. The edge is moving in and out - and we have tied the area together by connecting the surrounding given lines and edges in the big red pattern. Basket ball next to parking. URBAN LIVING ROOM THE BLACK SQUARE Mimers Plads is the heart of the Superkilen Masterplan. This is where the locals meet around the Moroccan fountain, the Turkish bench, under the Japanese cherry-trees as the extension of the area s patio. In weekdays, permanent tables, benches and grill facilities serve as an urban living room for backgammon, chess players etc. The bike traffic is moved to the East side of the Square by partly solving the problem of height differences towards Midgaardsgade and enable a bike ramp between Hotherplads and the intersecting bike path connection. Towards North is a hill facing south with a view to the square and its activity. To protect from the street ending at the north east corner of the square and to meet the wishes from the neighbors, we have folded up a corner of the square creating a covered space. Unlike the pattern on the red square, the white lines on Mimers Plads are all moving in straight lines from north to south, curving around the different furniture to avoid touching it. Here the pattern is highlighting the furniture instead of just being a caped under it. SPORT/PLAY THE GREEN PARK Bauman once said that sport is one of the few institutions in society, where people can still agree on the rules. No matter where you re from, what you believe in and which language you speak, you can always play football together. This is why a number of sports facilities are moved to the Green Park, including the existing hockey field with an integrated basketball court as it will create a natural gathering spot for local young people from Mjolnerpark and the adjacent school. The activities of the Green Park with its soft hills and surfaces appeals to children, young people and families. A green landscape and a playground where families with children can meet for picnics, sunbathing and breaks in the grass, but also hockey tournaments, badminton games and workout between the hills. Den Grønne Parks bølgede bakker er belyst fra kandelabrelignende master fra Italien. Belysningen intensiveres på parkens hovedstrøg for at skabe bedre overblik og dermed tryghed. SUPERKILE I TRE FARVER Superkilen er en ny fantasifuld park på Nørrebro. Med byrumsinventar fra 57 forskellige lande byder området på en mangfoldighed af oplevelser AF DORTE GRAM, ARKITEKT M.A.A., DANSK CENTER FOR LYS Nørrebro i København har fået en ny spektakulær park i verdensklasse. Superkilen er designet af tegnestuen BIG i samarbejde med de tyske landskabsarkitekter Topotek 1 og kunstnergruppen Superflex. Designet tager udgangspunkt i kvarterets mangfoldighed. Parken er fyldt op med 108 forskellige og spændende brugsgenstande fra hele verden. Mange af objekterne så som papirkurve, bænke og gynger er importeret fra fjerne lande, mens andre elementer, som f.eks. det marokkanske springvand og de store lysreklamer er kopieret efter forbilleder i udlandet. Det konceptuelle udgangspunkt er en opdeling af Superkilen i tre zoner med tre forskellige identitetsskabende farver: grøn, sort og rød. Områdets forskellige overflader og farver er integreret, så de i fællesskab og alene danner en kulisse til de mange forskellige objekter, fortæller seniorarkitekt m.a.a. Mikkel Marcker Stubgaard, BIG. Superkilen ligger mellem Nørrebrogade og Tagensvej. Den bevæger sig langs Mjølnerparken over Mimers Plads til pladserne omkring Nørrebrohallen. Inventar fra hele verden Områdets udformning er sket i samarbejde med områdets beboere. Der er blevet afholdt borgermøder og workshops, og der er blevet annonceret efter idéer til inventar i lokalaviserne. Intentionen har været, at der skulle være et objekt i parken svarende til hver af de 57 nationaliteter, som området rummer. Vi har bedt borgerne indsende forslag til, hvilket udenlandsk byinventar, de godt kunne tænke sig i parken. Et barn i Mjølnerparken ønskede sig palmer, og en anden borger ønskede sig runde bænke, som lægger op til sociale møder. Det har været tidskrævende at finde og implementere hvert enkelt element, fordi hvert lille objekt har været et projekt i sig selv, fortæller Mikkel Marcker Stubgaard. Den Grønne Park Den Grønne Park, som er udlagt til picnic, boldspil og leg, er belyst med kandelabrelignende lysmaster fra Italien. Den oprindelige intention om at skabe mangfoldighed i udtrykket ved at importere lygter fra mange forskellige lande blev af driftsmæssige årsager forenklet til fordel for en løsning, hvor alle de forskellige støbejernsmaster kommer fra samme leverandør. For at forenkle vedligeholdelsesopgaven og for at skabe et jævnt lys sidder der det samme reflektorarmatur med metalhalogen på alle masterne, hvad enten de har 3, 4, 5 eller 6 arme. Masterne er placeret i et hierarki, således at de master, som har flest arme, står ved knudepunkter og indgange til parken og dem med få arme ud for gangstierne. UDENDØRSBELYSNING / LYS / 7 8 / LYS / UDENDØRSBELYSNING Den Grønne Park indeholder en organisk formet boldbane oplyst med lysstofrørsarmaturer på mast, som skaber en sjov kontrast til kandelaberne. Det Sorte Område er udformet som en urban dagligstue. Det er hér man kan tage sig et slag backgammon med naboen eller få sig en passiar på bænken, som omkranser det marokkanske springvand. Det har været udfordrende og skægt at arbejde sammen med BIG. Målet har været at lande projektet så tæt på konkurrenceforslaget som muligt, samtidigt med at det også fungerede driftsmæssigt. Vi undersøgte flere leverandører og fandt ud af, at det italienske firma Neri havde et produktkatalog, som kunne sikre mangfoldigheden og variationen, uden at vi behøvede at ligge inde med reservedele fra 17 forskellige leverandører, siger Thomas Maare fagkoordinator for belysning i Københavns Kommune. Det er består af spotbelysning fra nogle få master og af kuffertarmaturer placeret dekorativt med otte armaturer på samme mast. Derudover byder denne urbane dagligstue på dekorativ belysning i form af flade cirkulære standerarmaturer med LED og et lysorgel med lodretstående LED-rør. Ved ombukningen af belægningen i hjørnet af Den Sorte Område er der lyslinjer med LED. Det eneste LED i projektet er nogle mindre detaljer, som er kommet til hen mod slutningen af projektet. Hvis projektet var blevet projekteret nu, ville der givet vis have været mere LED, men da belysningen blev valgt i 2009, var teknologien ikke langt nok fremme, siger Thomas Maare. Den Røde Plads I forlængelse af Nørrebrohallens sportsaktiviteter er Den Røde Plads tænkt som en urban udvidelse af Nørrebrohallens indre liv. Den Røde Plads forskellige sportsbaner giver lokalsamfundet mulighed for at mødes om fysiske aktiviteter og lege, som alle kan blive enige om, siger Mikkel Marcker Stubgaard. Den Røde Plads er belagt med en rød polyuretan- og nogle steder gummi-belægning og beplantet med rødløvede træer. Arkitekterne ville gerne undgå master og standere på pladsen. Belysningen består derfor af en wireophængt belysning, som understreger pladsens udstrækning. For at få lys nok på pladsen og især cykelstien er den wireophængte belysning suppleret med fem master. Ved fodgængerovergangen ved Mimersgade er der desuden placeret to stribede master fra England med et gult lys på toppen. Den wirehængte belysning er inspireret af en pladsbelysning i den finske by Riso, men vi har valgt nogle andre armaturer, som har den fordel, at vi kan styre lyset i en bestemt retning. Sammen med lyset fra de fem master har vi kunnet skabe en variation i lyset, som gør pladsens udtryk levende, siger Mikkel Marcker Stubgaard. Der er ingen farvet belysning i projektet, men udelukkende varmt hvidt lys. Ved indgangen ved Tagensvej er der en stor roterende donut fra amerikanske DeAngelis. Blandt de øvrige lysreklamer finder man et animeret skilt King of Milk fra Tawain, et skilt for det russiske Hotel Moskvitch, et skilt for en tandlægeklinik i Qatar og skiltet Beauty & Beauty fra Kina. De højeste skiltemaster er 14 meter høje. Alle skiltene er fremstillet hos SRI Sign Solution i Esbjerg. Skiltene, som virker som pejlemærker i parken, er tændt hele natten, mens det øvrige effektlys og boldbanelys slukker kl Den Røde Plads er designet til et moderne byliv med café, musik og sport. Grundbelysningen kommer fra wirerophængte armaturer spændt ud i et grit over pladsen. På billedet ses en elefant rutsjebane, som er en kopi af en ved Tjernobyl.
