3 Typography 3 1. Typography People buy into the leader before they buy into the vision. AU Passata As described in AU s design manual, AU Passata is the primary font used to create a characteristic and recognisable look across the entire AU design line. Passata is used for e.g. cover pages, headings and subheadings, highlighted quotes, in graphs and tables and on posters and short texts, etc. In contrast to other AU materials, where AU Passata is mostly used in upper-case letters, it is used mainly in lower-case letters at Aarhus BSS. Feel free to combine bold and light weight in headlines to highlight individual words and give the text a more dynamic design.

Georgia Georgia is a standard font available on most computers. It is therefore also suitable for Word documents that are intended to be shared with others. As described in AU s design manual, Georgia is used as a supplementary typography. Georgia is a font with serifs, and because of its high legibility it is used for long body text in brochures, letters, etc. You should never use Georgia in large font sizes, e.g. for headlines and similar. In publications, the recommended colour for the body text is 10/0/0/85 in order to achieve a lighter design. Cyan 10 Magenta 0 Yellow 0 Black 85

Vi har fået langt større commitment og gejst, fordi vi nu har en fælles retning og taler et fælles sprog. Integreret i vores virkelighed Vi er primært praktikere, men har fået et fælles teoriapparat, som vi kan bruge i hverdagen. Alle cases stammer fra virksomheden, så vi kan gå direkte fra uddannelsen til at arbejde videre med projekterne, fordi de er lavet som rigtige oplæg til ledelsen og bestyrelsen. Vores vigtigste investering Man overvejer det grundigt, inden man sender hele sin ledergruppe på et langt uddannelsesforløb, men det har været vores vigtigste investering i lang tid. Jeg var positiv, før vi gik i gang, men forløbet har langt overgået mine forventninger. This allows for more flexibility in the setup. Also, slightly narrow columns provide better legibility than if a text spans across all columns. As a rule of thumb, all the elements on the page - text, images, graphs, highlighted quotes, etc. - must follow this grid. In the above example, all the content spans across either one, two or three columns. The figure, for example, spans across two columns. The text could also

However, if you think your content works better with a different setup, it is possible to vary and alternate, for instance with a four column grid on the cover page and a three column grid on the back page. A grid is the underlying structure that keeps track of the content and prevents cover pages and content pages from appearing cluttered and confusing, even though there may be a lot of elements and information.

14 Colours Colours AU blue CMYK 100/80/0/15 RGB: 3, 66, 142 Pantone 287 AU blue+black CMYK 100/80/0/75 RGB: 0, 6, 64 Pantone 296 Silver: Pantone 877 Grey: CMYK 40/30/30/0 RGB: 159/164/166 Aarhus BSS signature colours are the two variants of AU blue, which provide a uniform look for our various products. The blue colours are meant to signal Aarhus BSS close ties with the business community as well as the strength of the school s connection with AU as a whole. You may use the original colours, or you may adjust the colour tone to 25, 50 or 75 per cent respectively for use in e.g. tables, diagrams, infographics, splash and other graphical elements. The blue colours ensure a solid and homogeneous design for Aarhus BSS in all formats, from signatures and and PowerPoint presentations to degree programme brochures and outdoor banners. A silver colour is also available for use in offset printing. For regular 4 colour print, this is replaced with a grey CMYK colour.

If you need to highlight individual items or emphasise a call to action, AU orange (0, 60, 100, 0) may be used as counterplay to the blue colours. Limited use of a complementary colour can also break up the design graphically and make it interesting, but it must be used in moderation in order to work and to maintain a clean design. GUIDELINES: Only use the orange colour as a graphical marker before a call to action or as a splash on typographical cover pages (see the example above and on the next page). Never use the orange colour in typography, cross-sections, the background, image tonings, graphics, tables, graphs or similar. Instead, use tonings of blue. Always keep in mind the blue colours. Only use the orange colour if it serves a communicative or specific graphical purpose.

18 Aarhus BSS designguide Image Style Image style The Aarhus BSS image style includes colour images and duotone images in blue. The duotone images are generated on the basis of colour images. The focal point of the image is in focus, while objects in the front and background are somewhat blurry to create a sense of depth and calm. A calm background in the image facilitates working with the logo, the accreditations and the typography. The images should preferably be of people in the surroundings at Aarhus BSS. However, you should avoid chaotic everyday images without focus, as they easily create a cluttered look and are difficult to work with. Also, you should avoid overly polished stock photos, which may look artificial.

Please make sure that the text is legible when it is written on a coloured background or on an image.

If a duotoned image is used along with a blue cross-section, the image should be duotoned in the AU blue not used in the cross-section. 20 On the next pages, you can see how to create duotone images. This can be done in both Adobe Photoshop and InDesign.

21 Image style duotone images 21 The starting point is a colour image. Make the image black and white and convert to duotone. In the dialogue window, you can select the colour by clicking the colour field next to Ink 1. (If the colour selection window only displays Pantone colours, click the button Picker to display the window for entering CMYK values). Save the image as a TIFF or Photoshop file.

22 Image style duotone images 22 You can achieve the same effect in InDesign. The starting point here is a black and white image that has been saved as a TIFF file and placed into InDesign. Select the image with the white arrow (Direct Selection Tool). The black colour option will now be marked as selected in the Swatches palette. Now choose the new colour - either AU blue or AU blue + black.

24 Image style Enlarge images 24 If you need to enlarge an image, open the image in Photoshop. Click image size. Access the bottom drop-down menu in the Image Size window and tick Bicubic Smoother (best for enlargement). Select the desired height or width and the desired resolution - for print normally 300 ppi. Save the image as a TIFF or Photoshop file. Enlarging images Please note that as a general rule, the image must be of high quality for you to enlarge it. Use you common sense and print the image in the size you need to assess if the result of the enlargement is applicable.

25 Cross-sections Cross-sections The cross-section is an element used only by Aarhus BSS. The cross-section should be used in all formats, e.g. posters, web banners, brochures and publication cover pages. There are two versions of the cross-section design: A large cross-section through the centre point of the page and a smaller cross-section through the bottom quarter of the page. Whether to use the large or the small cross-section depends on the general design of the material and the legibility. There may be some formats, e.g. different types of merchandise, where the cross-section does not work. In individual cases the cross-section may be omitted if this works better - but always keep in mind the other guidelines for the Aarhus BSS design.

Cross-section When using duotone images, the image should never be same tone of blue as the colour field. That is, if the colour panel is AU blue, the image should be toned in AU blue + black. 29 Images should never appear in the lower part of the small cross-section.

30 Hachuring Hachuring Hachuring consist of pinstripes in the same angle as the cross-section. Hachuring may be used as an alternative background, e.g. in student pamphlets or similar informal materials. The hachuring should always be grey and in the same stroke as shown here. The hachuring design is available in the InDesign template folder. Hachuring should never be used together with the cross-section.

40 Minimum formats Small or different formats Some special formats can make it difficult to place logos exactly as the guide describes. Here are some examples of formats that are either too small or narrow to follow the general rule of maintaining a minimum distance of half the width of the logo, as well as examples where the accreditation logos may be placed differently or omitted. The Aarhus BSS logo should not exceed 52 mm in width. This corresponds to 41.5 per cent of the eps file size and to a letterhead font size of 5.5 point. When using the logo alone, it should not be smaller than 10x10 mm, which corresponds to 41.5 per cent of the eps file size. The folder with the Aarhus BSS logos also contains files just with the logo ( Square ). In special cases, such as print on pens and lozenge boxes, it may be necessary to reduce the size even further.
