Thank you for your interest in this research study. Participation is voluntary. You may withdraw from participation at any time, and you may decline to answer any question. We will track the pages that you visit while responding to the search tasks, and the search terms you use, using computer software. It is anticipated that the online searching will take approximately two hours. We will also ask you to fill in a number of questionnaires at various stages during the study. The results of your interaction with the search system will be reported without any reference to you specifically. Your name will appear only on this sheet, and the participant schedule. No names will be attached to the logs of your interactions with the search systems. While not attaching your name to the search logs will not render you unidentifiable, only the researchers will have access to this data and for the purposes of data analysis only. All information that you provide will be treated confidentially and your identity will not be revealed in reporting the study results. I have read the explanation about this study. I have been given the opportunity to discuss it and my questions have been answered to my satisfaction. 37 7 Letter to potential participants København den 14. februar 2008 Undersøgelse af søgemaskiner Vi er to specialestuderende ved Danmarks Biblioteksskole som i de kommende måneder vil undersøge ældres brug af søgemaskiner. Vi vil spørge, om du vil hjælpe os ved at deltage i vores brugerundersøgelse. Vi har lagt mærke til, at undersøgelser indenfor dette område hovedsageligt tager udgangspunkt i brugere i aldersgruppen Derfor vil vi sætte fokus på, om søgemaskiner også imødekommer andre brugergruppers behov. Som grundlag for vores speciale vil vi teste om søgemaskinen fremfinder det som brugeren søger, om den hjælper med at skelne mellem interessante og uinteressante resultater og om ældres måde at søge informationer på internettet adskiller sig fra andre aldersgrupper. Da søgesystemet er på engelsk skal deltagerne have gode engelskkundskaber. Det ville også være en god ide at deltagerne tidligere har brugt internettet og søgemaskiner som google. Der vil blive tale om At blive fortrolig med søgemaskinen ved en prøveopgave Søge efter oplysninger om to emner der er beskrevet på engelsk og dansk Pause med kaffe og kage Søge efter oplysninger om to yderligere emner Udfylde et spørgeskema Vi regner med at det foregår i marts måned, enten på Danmarks Biblioteksskole, eller et sted i København efter dit ønske. 38 8 Church newsletter To whom it may concern We are two students from the Royal School for Library and Information Science in Copenhagen who are writing our Master's thesis on how older people use search engines. During our education we encountered a large number of studies on how people use search engines. The persons participating in these studies are most often university students, and we find this to be an insufficient representation of the broader public. In our research for our Master's thesis we concentrate on how older people use the Internet and search engines. In order to make the results of our study comparable to earlier studies, the search engine, the pages shown and the tasks need to be in English. However, since most older people in Denmark often do not have sufficient English skills for participating in such a study, we hope that some of the active parishioners at your church could help us..
