a full turn-out for the auction There is a full turn-out at this autumn s international auction in Bredgade which offers among other works, paul Fischer s pulsating painting ildløs i skindergade (Fire in skindergade (cat. no. 39). in the artist s evocative painting, we witness the fire brigade s battle to control the flames an intense snapshot of life in Copenhagen around the year 1900. also in the auction is the passionate asger Jorn s brilliant Juletræ på torvet (Christmas tree on the square) (cat. no. 788), which burns into the retina in the same way that the glowing notes of ph s fashionable grand piano (cat. no. 1292) enthuse the most passionate aficionados of music and design. if the fire is not quickly quenched, there is a danger that it will spread and destroy assets that are either difficult to replace or difficult to rebuild. Thorvaldsens Museum, A Catalogue Raisonné of the Works of Martinus Rørbye no. 170. Provenance: The estate auction of the late painter Martinus Rørbye 1849 no. 49a. In 1839 Rørbye married Rose Schiøtt (1810-1859). Shortly after the wedding the couple travelled to Italy and stayed there for almost two years. This was Rør- bye's second stay in Italy and the couple primarily lived in Rome, but also travelled to Sicily, where Rørbye especially was attracted by Palermo and the area around the temples in Girgenti. During their stay in Palermo from 25nd of June to 7th of October 1840 Rørbye left his wife in the city and went on an excursion to Girgenti for a fortnight, where he painted several studies of the temples and the surrounding landscape, including the present one. Thorvaldsens Museum, A Catalogue Raisonné of the Works of Martinus Rørbye no. 192, a study of a figure in no. 194 in the Catalogue Raisonné "Loggia fra Procida med figurer" (Loggia from Procida with figures) from 1841, that one exhibited at Charlottenborg in 1842. The model's name was Rosa Babona. In 1839 Rørbye married Rose Schiøtt (1810-1859). Shortly after the wedding the couple travelled to Italy and stayed there for almost two years. This was Rørbye's second stay in Italy and the couple primarily lived in Rome, but also travelled to Sicily. The study here was executed during that stay. Provenance: In the present owner's family for more than 60 years. Nivaagaards Malerisamling (Nivaagaard Picture Gallery) has a painting with the same motif from 1835-36 with the size 57 x 71 cm. That one registered in Thorvaldsens Museum, A Catalogue Raisonné of the Works of Jørgen Sonne no. 45. That one also exhibited at the Thorvaldsens Museum and Aarhus Kunstmuseum, "Jørgens Sonne", 1988 no. 13, reproduced and mentioned p. 51 in the exhibition catalogue. The present work is smaller and painted earlier according to the date (1834) on the stretcher. The larger version owned by the Nivaagaard Picture Gallery was given as a birthday present from corn dealer Hans Puggaard to his wife Bolette Puggaard in February 1836. Gotha is a German town where Gurlitt apparently painted/signed the present work. Several paintings from this spectacular location are known by Gurlitt, one in the Museum für Kunst und Kulturgeschichte der Stadt Dortmund, dated 1852, the other one in the Städtischen Kunstsammlungen der Stadt Görlitz dated 1850/60 as well as one privately owned. The first mentioned, looks very much like the one coming up for sale here. It is reproduced in the exhibition catalogue "Louis Gurlitt (1812-1897). Porträts europäischer Landschaften in Gemälden und Zeichnungen", 1998 p. 106 no. 99. The exhibition took place in Hamburg, Flensburg and at Nivaagaards Malerisamling (Nivaagaard Picture Gallery) north of Copenhagen. Faaborg 1812, d. copenhagen 1865 coastal scene on a quiet summer day with sailing ships near an arsenal, presumably at Toulon Arsenal in Provence, France. To the right the French cutter Laura of Toulon. Signed c. dahl á Paris. Inscribed on the reverse of the canvas N. c. M. F. dahl 1864. Oil on canvas. 65 x 100 cm. The painter's full name was Niels Carl Michael Flindt Dahl, therefore the indication on the reverse of the canvas. Between 1852 and 1855 Carl Dahl travelled around Europe, where he among other cities visited Toulon and afterwards Paris. Carl Dahl's own information on the painting points to the fact that he made studies in Toulon and afterwards painted the picture in Paris. The reverse of the canvas is furthermore stamped "Paris". The fire took place on the 6th of April 1895 in a store in the basement of the front building Skindergade no. 7. The many curious onlookers are standing in front of no. 8, one of the most beautiful houses in Skindergade, in the centre of Copenhagen. The street got it s name in the early 16th century. A skinder is a tanner or a furrier. Some of the figures were often seen in the streets of Copenhagen at that time and we are able to identify them. The gentleman to the left with the black top hat is editor Malöe. To the right we see master painter Marius Jensen, Mrs Børge Jansen, the writer, Børge Jansen and student Schierbeck. He also came to Skagen for the first time and his first drawing from this northernmost area and town in Jutland is dated 20th of May. In addition to this more drawings with motifs from Vendsyssel exist in bright colours from the following days, these in the Kobberstiksamlingen in Copenhagen. The present drawing belongs to these. Lundbye made a note under the drawing: "Et Billed af dette Indhold, samme Størrelse, begyndte jeg i Florens d. 30. April og sluttede det d. 20. May. Motivet er taget af Fontanen ved Loggia (Taccus copi af... "antik skulptur")". A painting with the same motif and size did I start to paint 30th of April and it was finished the 20th of May. The scene represents the fountain at Loggia (with a copy of the antique sculpture by Taccus). In a letter to the Danish art historian Høyen Lundbye mentions that it was really a little masterpiece.
