Overalfoodsecurityindicatorsremainverypooracrossthecountry Keypoints InNovember,overallevelsoffoodconsumptiondon tshow anysignofimprovements InAl-Hudaydafoodconsumptionamonghouseholdsissharplydeteriorating Foodassistancehelpedtostabilizeandslightlyreducedfoodcopingstrategiesacrossthegovernorates Situationupdate On12November,apauseinfightinginandaroundAlHudaydahCitycontributedtoasignificantreductionofviolence.However,artileryshelingandairstrikesdidnotcompletelystopandcontinuedtoposeathreattocivilians.Fieldreportsindicatedthatmostshopsare closedandthenumberofpeopleinthecityhasdecreasedsignificantly.asof19november,rapidresponsemechanism partnersidentifiedmorethan132,000displacedhouseholdsinalhudaydahgovernorateandassistedmorethan123,000.armedclashescontinuedalso intaizzgovernorateandtaizzcity,whichiscrossedbydifferentfrontlines. InOctober,commercialfoodimportsthroughAlHudaydahandAlSaleefports wheremostfoodentersyemen felbymorethan50percentcomparedtoseptember.only17shipsdischargedcargointheseportsinoctober thesecondlowestmonthlyfigureever recorded. Duringthereportingperiod,theYemeniRialrecoveredsignificantlywiththeexchangeraterisingtoabout595YERperdolarfrom aslow as800yer/us$.therecoveryisanindicationthatstepstostabilizetheexchangeratearebeginningtotakeeffect.therapid depreciationofthecurrencysincejulyledtofearsthatstaplefoodpricescouldfurtherincreasebeyondthecapacityforhouseholdstomeettheirbasicfoodneeds.betweenjulyandoctober,thevalueoftherialdroppedbyhalf,from 496YER/US$tobetween700and800 YER/US$. InNovember2018,mVAM conductedthe39throundofhouseholdfoodsecuritymonitoringinyemenvialivetelephoneinterviews.datawerecolectedbetween1stand30thnovember.responsesarelikelytobebiasedtowardsyounger,somewhatbetter-off householdswholiveinurbanareasandhavebetteraccesstoelectricityandphone-chargingservices.sincehouseholdswithmorephonesaremorelikelytobeselected,thefindingsofthisreportareweightedbythenumberofsim cardsheldbyhouseholds.theyare alsoweightedbypopulationestimatesforidpsandnon-idps.themapspresentasnapshotofhouseholdfoodconsumptionpatternsatthetimeofdatacolectionanddonotrepresenttheprevalenceoffoodinsecurityatpopulationlevel(asisthecaseforipcmaps). AsshowninFigure2,inNovember42percentofthesurveyedhouseholdscontinuetohaveinadequatefoodconsumptionwithonlyonepercentofthehouseholdswhoreportedpoor foodconsumptioninoctobermovingtoborderlinefoodconsumptioninnovember. Similarly,atgovernoratelevel,thefoodconsumptionofhouseholdsdidn timprovecomparedtolastmonthwiththeexceptionofabyan,hadramaut,lahj,raymahandsa dahthat showedsomelevelofimprovementinthehouseholds foodconsumption.ontheotherhand,inalhudaydahwhereconflictiscontinuingtheshareofhouseholdswithpoorfood consumptionsharplyincreasedfrom 7.4percentinOctoberto16.1percentinNovember. ThelowestFCSwasrecordedinAdDali(48.1)where60percentofthesurveyedhouseholdswasfoundtohaveinadequatefoodconsumption(27percentpoor33percent borderline).inanotherthreegovernoratesthepercentageofhouseholdswithinadequatefoodconsumptionwasmorethan50percentnamely,marib(55percent),taizz(54 percent)andaljawf(51percent). Useofnegativefoodbasedcopingstrategiesremainhighacrossthecountry Map2:rCSIbygovernorate,November2018 ClickononeormoregovernoratesonthemaptogetthecorrespondentFigures4and5 InNovember,thenationalmeanrCSIdecreasedfrom 23.7to21.3asthemVAM datashowsageneraldecreaseinthepercentageofhouseholdswhoreportedrelyingonthefood consumptioncopingstrategies(figure4).however,thenovembermeanrcsiremainstilhigherthanthemeanrcsiinnovember2017whenthesea,landandairblockadewas furtherconstrictedbythesaudi-coalitionresultinginshortagesofnecessarysuppliessuchasfoodandwater.thisisshowingthatthecopingsituationinyemencontinue desperatelytodeteriorateandexpandacrossalthegovernorateswith90percentofthehouseholdshavingtorelyoncopingstrategies. InNovember2018,adecreasedpercentageofhouseholdreportinghavingtobuylessexpensiveorpreferredfood(-6percent),limitingthesizeortheirportion(-8percent),reducing thenumberofmealseatenperday(-6percent)andrestrictingconsumptionbyadultsinorderforsmalchildrentoeat(-6percent)wasrecordedbythemvam data. Thistrendhasbeenobservedinalmostalthegovernoratesacrossthecountry.HowevermeanrCSIhasslightlyincreasedinAbyan,AlBaydaandMarib.Hajah(25.4)andRaymah (24.7)continuetoreportthehighestrCSI.MorethantwothirdorthecountryreportedameanrCSImoreorequalthan19,correspondingtoIPCPhase3orabove(Map2). Asinthepreviousrounds,displacedhouseholds(meanrCSI25.4)resortmoretonegativecopingstrategiesthannon-displacedhouseholds(meanrCSI21).Theuseoffoodbased copingstrategiescontinuetobewidespreadamongthetwosurveyedpopulationgroups(figure6)howeverinnovemberfewerhouseholdsamongstthenon-displacedpopulation resortedtobuylessexpensivefood,limitportionsizes,reducethenumberofmealsandrestrictconsumptionofadultssothatchildrencouldeat.
