2 Occupational health and safety on the international agenda New collaboration on welfare and the working environment In 2014, the Boards of the Danish Government s Seamen s Service and SEAHEALTH decided that the two services should work together more closely. So the initiative was taken to find a shared address and subsequently a property has been located in Rødovre that the two organisations will be moving to at the end of The collaboration is intended to help ensure good welfare and health and safety services for seafarers in the future, and by working together, the organisations can make better use of resources for the benefit of seafarers. Leadership at sea One theme that received a lot of attention in the past year was leadership at sea. The issue of leadership at sea was the theme at the MSSM Conference held for the ninth time at Hotel Nyborg Strand at the end of August. And leadership is also the pivotal issue in SEAHEALTH s latest publication that gives leaders on board a tool to become better leaders and to tackle the differences and the diversity amongst crew on board amongst crew on board, not just culturally but also on other levels. Various shipowners and seafarers kindly trialled the material and provided feedback on the process. It is vital for the work done by SEAHEALTH that we have close relations with the industry in developing new tools so as to make them work in practice in daily routines on board. International SEAHEALTH There has been increasing international interest in SEAHEALTH s publications and advisory services. SEAHEALTH also assisted in drawing up the new guidance on Maritime Occupational Safety and Health (MOSH) for the International Labour Organisation (ILO), published in extension of MLC 2006, and acted as a consultant to the ILO at the expert committee meeting in Geneva in October As part of the work being done on offshore wind energy, SEAHEALTH has also become a member of IMCA and G9 s stakeholder forum, and also attended meetings of the European Wind Energy Association s Health and Safety group. SEAHEALTH was also active on the international maritime scene in other respects. SEAHEALTH s safety, leadership and maritime medicine services attracted attention and extensive interest at several international conferences at which documentation and activities were presented. This also applied at international conferences in Copenhagen, London and Manila. 2

3 Photo: Rasmus Christoffersen - HFV photo contest 2013 E-learning for new safety organisation members At the end of 2014, the Danish Maritime Authority and the industry had an understanding that it should be possible for newly elected safety representatives (primarily ratings) on long-haul cargo vessels to have the option of either attending a 16 OHS course on shore as hitherto, or taking an e-learning course on board. E-learning will also meet the requirements of the new MOSH guidance on occupational health and safety for MLC 2006, and so also apply to ships under other flags. Financial stability The past year was characterised by many activities and financially it was also a satisfactory year with financial stability despite the major projects. The Board notes with satisfaction the international interest in the SEAHEALTH s work and that its role as a core maritime occupational health and safety anchoring point has been constantly developing. 3

4 Leadership at sea ever increasing importance Leading Diversity Being a leader and having to manage different personalities, age groups, skills and personnel from different cultural backgrounds on board ships can be demanding. This is why SEAHEALTH worked with selected shipowners to develop material to support maritime leaders in their work in managing diversity on board. The pivotal issues in Leading Diversity - a self-assessment tool and a dialogue tool - help leaders to rate themselves on a range of specifically selected parameters specially designed to create trust and manage differences. The material also includes absolutely specific tools for leaders for handling diversity on board. NEPTUNE Project catering and competencies at sea The NEPTUNE Project ended in 2014 with four new guidelines intended to give catering/nutrition at sea a boost. The four new guidelines are aimed respectively at sea-going stewards and assistants as well as others handling food on board, shipmasters and company managements. They contain good advice and guidance on everything from provisioning and supplier agreements for food quality, dietary policies and health management, and aim to help solve some of the barriers to promoting good, healthy lives at sea. The NEPTUNE Project was funded by the Danish Maritime Fund. Cross-Wind Network The Cross-Wind Network started in Its purpose is to provide input for work done on health and safety in the offshore wind energy sector from an operational perspective. In addition to SEAHEALTH, the network comprises maritime offshore wind energy operators working to balance health and safety requirements between the construction and maritime sectors. The network aims to exchange experience, benchmarking and provide input for best practice standards and to develop tools for maritime operators. The pre-project is being supported by the Danish Maritime Fund. New Nearmiss database In 2014 SEAHEALTH continued working on the new Nearmiss database which is intended to support shipowners and their crew in better knowledge and experience sharing. This made it possible for various major shipowners to transfer large volumes of data from their own systems in 2014, making it easy to file reports. The Nearmiss database enables shipowners without their own system to have an incident management system. The most important and most instructive reports are sent anonymously to users from the Nearmiss database as safety learnings. Health and Safety at Sea update The chemicals database and the Health and Safety at Sea software is being constantly developed and improved in close collaboration with shipowners and seafarers on the use, reporting and approval of chemicals and risk assessments. One of the most significant new issues in the 2014 Health and Safety at Sea software update was the ability to select either a 3x3, 5x5 or 6x6 matrix for assessing the level of risk. It is now also possible to save the company/vessel s own Permit to Work and Toolbox in the risk assessment module. The update also introduced a new catering module, made the regular software update option more visible and provided update alerting. MSSM 2014 More than 300 delegates attended SEAHEALTH s annual conference on maritime health and safety and the environment. The overall theme was maritime leadership, including the relationship between trust and control. 4

SUNDHEDSLEDELSE Sundhedfremme i praksis - en samlet indsats Denne vejledning guider rederier til at sætte sundhedsledelse og sundhedsfremme i system, hvad enten ambitionsniveauet er til at overholde gældende lov eller, mere ambitiøst, at udvikle en sundere arbejdsplads. Godt samarbejde mellem rederi og leverandør er mere end udbud/ efterspørgsel. Økonomien er vigtig, men tillid, kommunikation og god forventningsafstemning kan betyde, at rederiets besætninger får de rigtige varer og leverandøren kan bruge sin tid på at behandle færre klagesager og i stedet optimere på kvaliteten. Denne vejledning er udarbejdet i projekt NEPTUNE med gode råd fra globale leverandører til skibenes kabysser. Projekt NEPTUNE har fået tilskud fra Den Danske Maritime Fond. LEVERANDØR REDERI Klare aftaler om fødevarekvalitet og levering Når provianten er kommet om bord, er det essentielt for kvaliteten af varerne, at de opbevares korrekt. Skal råvarekvaliteten bevares længst muligt, er det alfa og omega at håndtere dem rigtigt allerede tidligt i kølekæden, uanset om det er på køl, frost eller på tørlageret. Services included support for seafarers, their relatives and companies. The new 8 Safety Links On the basis of experience and feedback from shipowners and vessels on the 8 Safety Links from 2009, SEAHEALTH further developed the tool in 2014, with the new, improved version being released in SEAHEALTH Safety Assessment An increasing need in the maritime industry for working specifically on safety made SEAHEALTH start work on new safety assessment tools. These tools are intended among other things to ensure a greater focus on safety as part of recruitment. The tools can also help assess the safety climate in the organization and need for training personnel. Medical Guide for Seafarers Work continued to be done on the new medical guide for seafarers during 2014, and 18 instruction films have been produced. The guide focuses on communication to seafarers. The vision is to create the world s best medical guide for seafarers but the work involved has turned out to be very extensive. The medical guide is intended for national users as part of the established system with the medical first aider training at the Centre of Maritime Health Service (CMS) on Fanø, Radio Medical and the Medicine Chest. At the same time, work is being done to create international interest in the medical guide. The guide will also be published as an e-book together with a special website. The Medical Guide is being funded by the Danish Maritime Fund. Ergonomics and long-term harmful effects Following the great success of the Nearmiss illustrations, SEAHEALTH also had a series of new drawings created in The drawings illustrate some of the potentially permanent harmful effects that a long working life at sea can have. The drawings are up for release in Short instructional films on ergonomics on passenger ships were also produced. Consultancy and courses As ever, SEAHEALTH is always pleased to provide guidance and advice on specific OHS problems that ships or their owners would like to have resolved. We are pleased to run courses and did so in 2014 with courses on leadership, stress management, catering/nutrition and hygiene. The e-learning option is also available for the hygiene courses. 5

SEAHEALTH promotes health and safety for seafarers regardless of rank and nationality. We service all ships, ranging from small supply and specialist ships, tankers, bulkers and container ships to large passenger ships. SEAHEALTH consultants are available to the Danish merchant marine.
