10 The Spring Collection H.A. Brendekilde s young woman holding a little girl s hand is shown on a bed of the first anemones in a bright beech forest, as a sign of emerging spring, almost upon us after a long, dark winter. Just like the anemones, which announce brighter times to come, Bruun Rasmussen once again sees optimism taking root. Here, at the start of the year, we have observed positive and renewed confidence in the art market, with increased activity in items consigned to us, and for the first time in 18 months, auction prices have stabilised and risen. I believe we are gradually moving towards a market that is flourishing once again just like Emil Nolde s red tulips! We look forward to presenting our spring collection at the preview in Bredgade. Forårets kollektion H.A. Brendekildes unge kvinde med en lille pige i hånden står på et tæppe af de første anemoner i en lys bøgeskov som tegn på det spæde forår, der nu er på vej efter en lang og mørk vinter. Lige som anemonerne, der varsler lysere tider, mærker Bruun Rasmussen igen en spirende optimisme. I starten af foråret har vi iagttaget en positiv fornyet tillid til kunstmarkedet med øgede aktiviteter på indleveringssiden, og for første gang i 18 måneder ser vi en stabilisering og stigning i auktionspriserne. Jeg fornemmer, at vi igen er på vej i retningen af et marked, der atter blomstrer som Emil Noldes røde tulipaner! Vi glæder os til at fremvise forårets kollektion på eftersynet i Bredgade. Inscribed with numbers (presumably inventory numbers) in both lower corners, to the right: 33. Oil on panel. 42 x 32 cm. On the reverse of the painting and the frame red wax seals and two stamps with indistinct inscription: "Collection... le Cha... Barbier Nancy". Also the following names of artists handwritten: "Breughel et Van Baelen". Jan Brueghel and Hendrick van Balen are known to have painted paintings together, and it is not unlikely that the same procedure was used here, in this way two painters, probably of Dutch origin, worked together creating the present work. Inscribed verso (in Cyrillic): "Raevskaya Maria Nikolaevna painted in 1824". Unsigned. Oil on canvas. 71 x 51 cm. Period frame. Maria Volkonskaya ( ) is a prominent person in Russian history. The famous national poet Pushkin was in love with her, but she married Sergey Volkonsky, the famous Decembrist, and went in exile with him to Siberia. Signed and dated Asselin pinx Oil on canvas. 97 x 77 cm. The portrait depicts Princess Ekaterina Vasilyevna Saltykova, née Dolgorukaya ( ), daughter of Prince Vasili Vasilyevich Dolgorukov and Princess Ekaterina Feodorovna, née Baryatinskaya, who in 1814 married Prince Sergei Nikolaievich Saltykov ( ), the Privy Councillor. From June Princess Saltykova was Chamber Lady at the Imperial Russian Court, from 1835 Lady-in-Waiting at the Court of Tsarevich Alexander (II) and from 1855 Lady-in- Waiting at the Court of Tsaritsa Maria Alexandrovna. In 1824 Princess Saltykova received the order of St. Catherine of the 2nd degree, and in 1856 she received the Order of St. Catherine of the 1st degree. After her death she was burried in St. Petersburg in the Church of St. Catherine, which is located between the Bolshaya and Malaya Okhta. The French painter Robert Lefevre portrayed Princess Saltykova twice, respectively in 1812 and The first portrait is owned by The State Hermitage Museum in St. Petersburg, and the second belongs to the Pushkin Museum of Fine Arts. The Historical Museum in Moscow furthermore owns a self-portrait of Princess Saltykova. The present portrait is the earliest in the iconography of Princess Saltykova, and she is portrayed by the French painter Jean-François Asselin. He moved to Germany after the French Revolution and studied in Dresden, whereupon he returned to France. Later he travelled to St. Petersburg, where he painted the present portrait, which is dated 1808 and painted just before Princess Saltykova became a Chamber Lady, and then wore the connected dress code. The present portrait is reproduced in Grand Duke Nicholas Mikhailovich's edition of "Russian Portraits of the XVIII and XIX centuries", St. Petersburg 1906, no. 111, (Collection of Her Highness Princess A. Gregori Markovich Orlov was a well-known theatre costume designer using strong colours and imaginative designs, working for among others Novosibirsk State Theatre, Ashhabad State Russian Drama Theatre and The Red Army Drama Theatre in Odessa. This present remarkable theatre design and sketch collection contains among others designs for Busybody by Jack Popplewell, Hello Dolly by Michael Stewart, Khanuma by Akvsenti Tsagareli and Masquerade by Mikhail Yurievich Lermontov. In 1946 Gregori Markovich Orlov received the Commander of Odessa order for his work on the play The Great Monarch, and in 1953 he became a member of the Ukrainian Artists' Union. The fortune of the Stroganov family was based on an involvement in the 16th century salt industry, which resulted in the family becoming among the wealthiest private citizens in Russia. The family also contributed to Peter the Great's vision of making St. Petersburg the equal of great capital cities of Europe. Sergei Grigorievich Stroganov ( ) purchased a house on the Nevsky Prospect and also a property at the Moika River. In 1752 the recently ennobled Baron Stroganov engaged Francesco Bartolomeo Rastrelli, the architect of the Tsar's Winter Palace, to join two buildings and create two great facades. The new Stroganov Palace therefore had one facade towards Nevsky Prospect, the other towards the Moika River, and was furnished with Louis XV furniture. However, it was Sergei Grigorievich Stroganov's son, Alexander ( ), who bought works of art after his father's instructions. In 1771 he went to Paris for an eight year sojourn. He had been fascinated by antiquity since his younger days, and was strongly influenced by the neo-classical style. When he returned to St. Petersburg in 1788, he redeveloped and remodelled the family properties in the neo-classical style. He was then influenced by the great Russian architect and designer Andrey Nikiforovich Voronikhin, who designed several items for the Stroganov Palace in St. Petersburg. In 1931, the Stroganoff Collection, which after the Russian revolution had been nationalized, was sent to Berlin for auction by the Soviet Government.
