9 Lauritzen, Utzon og frimærkesamleren Et lysende Eventyr af Kunst og Snilde det var ordene i et dansk dagblad efter indvielsen af Radiohuset i København i 1945 få måneder efter Danmarks befrielse. Der er tale om en af de smukkeste og mest gennemførte funktionalistiske bygninger i dansk arkitekturhistorie, og i mere end 70 år var stedet afsender af DR s nyheder om store og små begivenheder til danskerne. Arkitekten bag både bygning og indretning var Vilhelm Lauritzen. Han satte de første streger på tegnebrættet i 1934, men kom pga. anden verdenskrig til at vente 11 år på at se sit værk opført. På auktionen sætter vi fokus på Lauritzen med bl.a. en række sjældne møbler, der var en del af indretningen i Radiohuset. Det gælder f.eks. en armstol fra Radiorådssalen, en væglampe fra Koncertsalen og ikke mindst en fritstående sofa, der kun blev udført i ca. 12 eksemplarer hos snedkermester Rud. Rasmussen (kat.nr. 1303, 1302 og 1309). Kronen på værket er uden tvivl Radiohuset, men Lauritzen tegnede flere bygninger af samme kaliber, f.eks. Den Danske Ambassade i Washington, Daells Varehus og Terminal 39 i Københavns Lufthavn. I 1936 vandt Lauritzen en arkitektkonkurrence om formgivningen af Gladsaxe Rådhus, og det blev indledningen på et årelangt samarbejde med kommunen omkring byplanlægning. På samme måde som Radiohuset fremstår rådhuset som et stykke totaldesign, hvor bygning og indretning er formgivet for at tjene helheden bedst muligt. Med på auktionen er en teaktræsbænk, som Lauritzen tegnede til rådhuset og genanvendte på den danske ambassade i Washington (kat.nr. 1311). De udbudte møbler fra Radiohuset og Gladsaxe Rådhus er indleveret til auktion af tegnestuen Vilhelm Lauritzen Arkitekter. Fra Radiohuset og Gladsaxe Rådhus til Operahuset i Sydney. I langt større skala satte arkitekten Jørn Utzon sit fingeraftryk på international arkitekturhistorie med formgivningen af en af de mest berømte bygninger i verden. Operahuset stod færdigt i 1973 og er i dag optaget på UNESCO s verdensarvsliste. Til auktionens højdepunkter hører en række møbler fra Utzons private samling fra hjemmet i Hellebæk nord for København heriblandt et par sjældne lænestole af den finske arkitekt Alvar Aalto, som Utzon indledte et livslangt venskab med i sine unge år, da han arbejdede på Aaltos tegnestue (kat.nr. 1232). Samlingen rummer også Utzons egne møbler, f.eks. tidlige prototyper af et bord og en taburet, som var tiltænkt indretningen af Operahuset (kat.nr og 1229). Det hører til sjældenhederne, at man kan koble nordisk design og frimærker. Det er ikke desto mindre tilfældet på denne auktion, hvor vi svinger hammeren over et smukt mahogniklædeskab, tegnet af arkitekten Johannes Schmidt-Andersen i samarbejde med Kaare Klint, som han var elev hos på Kunstakademiets Møbelskole. Schmidt-Andersen tegnede adskillige møbler, men satte især sit præg på villabyggeriet i Gentofte og Svanemøllekvarteret i København. De sidste 30 år af sit liv helligede han sig imidlertid frimærkerne, opbyggede en prisbelønnet samling og gik under navnet Dansk filatelis fader (kat.nr. 1271). Auktionen byder også på kunsthåndværk anført af glasvasen Kåben fra 1947 af finnen Gunnel Nyman og den sjældne pulegoso -vase Amfora, som blev formgivet af italieneren Napoleone Martinuzzi og udført hos Venini (kat.nr og 1161). 10 Lauritzen, Utzon and The Stamp Collector An Illuminating Adventure of Art and Ingenuity those were the words in a Danish newspaper following the inauguration of Radiohuset (The Radio House) in Copenhagen in 1945, a few months after the liberation of Denmark at the end of World War II. Radiohuset is one of the most beautiful and consistently functionalist buildings in Danish architectural history, and for more than 70 years the building was the source for Danish Radio s news broadcasts concerning larger and smaller events with relevance for the Danes. The architect of both the building and the interior was Vilhelm Lauritzen. He drew the first lines on paper in 1934, but because of WWII Lauritzen had to wait 11 years before his work was completed. At the auction we focus on Lauritzen with, among other things, a number of rare furniture pieces that were part of the interior in Radiohuset. For instance an armchair from Radiorådssalen (The Radio Council Hall), a wall lamp from the Concert Hall and a freestanding sofa of which there were only produced about 12 copies by the master carpenter Rud. Rasmussen (Cat. no. 1303, 1302 and 1309). The crowning achievement for Lauritzen is undoubtedly Radiohuset, but he designed several buildings that reached the same impressive level of architectural design, for instance the Embassy of Denmark in Washington D.C., Daell s Department Store and Terminal 39 at Copenhagen Airport. In 1936 Lauritzen won an architectural competition for the design of Gladsaxe Town Hall. This marked the beginning of a long lasting collaboration between Lauritzen and the municipality regarding urban planning. Just as with Radiohuset, Gladsaxe Town Hall appears as a construction of total design, where the building and the interior are shaped by the architect to serve each other as much as possible. Included in the auction is a bench made of teak wood, which Lauritzen designed for the Gladsaxe Town Hall. The design was reused for a bench at the Embassy of Denmark in Washington D.C. (Cat. no. 1311). The furniture up for auction from Radiohuset and Gladsaxe Town Hall has been submitted to the auction by Vilhelm Lauritzen Architects. From Radiohuset and Gladsaxe Town Hall we turn to the Sydney Opera House. In a much larger scale the architect Jørn Utzon made his mark on international architectural history with the design of one of the most famous buildings in the world. The Sydney Opera House was completed in 1973 and is today on the UNESCO World Heritage list. One of the highlights of the auction includes a series of furniture from Utzon s private collection from his home in Hellebæk north of Copenhagen. The collection includes a set of rare armchairs by the Finnish architect Alvar Aalto, with whom Utzon began a lifelong friendship with in his younger years, while he worked at Aalto s studio (cat. no. 1232). The collection also contains Utzon s own furniture, for instance early prototypes of a table and a stool that were intended for the interior of the Sydney Opera House (Cat. no and 1229). It is rare to find a connection between Nordic design and stamps. This is nevertheless the case at the upcoming auction, where we will auction off a beautiful mahogany wardrobe designed by architect Johannes Schmidt-Andersen. The wardrobe was designed in collaboration with Kaare Klint, whom Schmidt-Andersen was a student of at the Academy of Fine Arts Furniture School. Schmidt-Andersen created several furniture designs, but more specifically he influenced the construction work of villas in Gentofte and the Svanemølle neighbourhood in Copenhagen. The last 30 years of his life, however, Schmidt-Andersen devoted himself to stamps. He built an award-winning collection and became known as the father of Danish philately (Cat. no. 1271). The auction also features artistic crafts, including the glass vase The Robe from 1947 by Finnish designer Gunnel Nyman and the rare pulegoso-vase Amphora, which was shaped by the Italian Napoleone Martinuzzi and created by Venini.
