2 Trioen består a en kort adagio-indledning å 4 takter, eterulgt a temaet å to gange 8 takter og 8 variationer. DCM 020 v

INTRODUCTION Hartmann s chamber music (see the survey below) holds a comaratively modest osition in his otherwise large outut, which is dominated by vocal music (including cantatas, dramatic music and songs). As can be seen rom the survey, only the works or violin and iano were rinted in Hartmann s lie time; the other works, o which one is doubtul and two are uninished, are only available in manuscrit in The Royal Library in Coenhagen. The resent Theme and Variations or Piano, Violin and Violoncello is handed down in Hartmann s ink autograh including searate string arts; the iano score is end dated 30/10 49. 1 The work was comosed in the autumn o 1849 when Hartmann, his wie Emma, and a riend o the amily, Ernst Weis, were engaged in the ublication o Emma Hartmann s songs under the seudonym Frederik Palmer. The manuscrit carries no title, and we have no urther inormation about either history, occasion, or the intended use o the score. In general, the sources or Hartmann s chamber music and iano music are scanty when it comes to inormation about actual erormances, and resumably most o these works were erormed in rivate circles, within or outside the comoser s own amily. 2 The trio consists o a short Adagio introduction o our bars, ollowed by the theme in two 8-bar hrases and eight variations; the eighth and inal variation is much longer than its redecessors. The work makes restricted demands on the technical abilities o the musicians, which might indicate that Hartmann had amateurs in mind on this occasion. The revision or the resent edition has only consisted o a ew emendations based on internal analogy and the collation o the string arts with the autograh iano score. Hartmann, Collected Works, vol. III/1 and III/2, Coenhagen 2012). 2 For a discussion o Hartmann s iano music, see Niels Krabbe, Udbredelsen a J.P.E.Hartmanns klavermusik, Fund og Forskning (51), Coenhagen 2012,. 413-444. 3 The dating o the unublished works is built on Inger Sørensen s orthcoming thematic catalogue o Hartmann s works.
