INTRODUCTION Asger Hamerik Asger Hamerik (184 192) was the son o the theologian and historian Frederik Hammerich and brother to the musicologist Angul Hammerich; he was also a cousin o the comoser C.F.E. Horneman and related to the comoser J.P.E. Hartmann s irst wie, Emma Hartmann. He originally lanned to study theology: however, in 1859 he began to study music theory with Gottred Matthison-Hansen and comosition with Niels W. Gade and J.P.E. Hartmann. In 1862, he travelled to London and later on to Berlin, where he studied with Hans von Bülow. In Berlin, he also got acquainted with Richard Wagner, who invited him to ay him a visit in Munich, but when the war between Denmark and Prussia broke out in 1864, Hamerik decided to leave Germany. 1 He continued his comositional studies with Hector Berlioz in Paris, where he was introduced to a number o leading musical igures, and, along with Berlioz, he also arranged a concert with his own works. In the ollowing years, concert tours brought Hamerik to Denmark and Sweden amongst other countries, and during a stay in Italy the American consul oered Hamerik the ost as director o the conservatory and music society in Baltimore. Ater some thought, he decided to accet the oer and let or America in 1871, where he sent many years teaching music theory and comosition. He also comosed a number o works which were erormed by the conservatory s symhony orchestra and made an eort to romote Scandinavian comosers in American musical lie, which so ar had been dominated by German music. In 1894, he married the ianist Margaret Williams, and ater a eriod o concert tours in Euroe at the end o the century, they settled down in Denmark, in Frederiksberg, where Hamerik lived until he assed away in 192. Qvartetto Qvartetto or strings is an early work, comosed in 1859, and consists o only one movement. 2 In an article on Asger Hamerik, ublished in Dansk Musiktidsskrit o 1926, it aears that some comositions in the year 1859 gave him the recognition and encouragement o Gade and J.P.E. Hartmann, to devote himsel to the art o music. In an earlier article rom the eriodical Musik, these comositions are seciied without Qvartetto being mentioned, 4 but the act that the score exists in a air coy, erhas written by a roessional coyist, could suggest that it was one o the works he resented during his early comositional activities. Besides the score written in a oreign hand, a set o arts exist in Hamerik s handwriting with some encil additions that could have been made in connection with a erormance. In that case, however, it seems likely that it took lace in rivate settings, since the quartet, aart rom being among his earliest comositions, does not aear in the work catalogue rom Musik which is based on Hamerik s own manuscrit. 5 1 Hamerik s decision to change his name so that the selling aeared Scandianvian rather than German, was also made in connection with the war in 1864; c. Kristian Ribers, Asger Hamerik, Dansk Musiktidsskrit, 8 (May 1926),. 126. 2 Asger Hamerik s irst comosition is dated in 1856 and dedicated to his mother; c. CRITICAL COMMENTARY DESCRIPTION OF SOURCES A B A B Parts, autograh, air coy Score, transcrit, air coy Parts, autograh, air coy. DK-Kk, ms 799, mu 9601.1600. On the irst music age (in ink): Violino I mo / Qvartetto / Asger Hammerich. Four biolios (one or each art). 5x25.8 cm, our orchestral arts (vl.1, vl.2, va., vc.); written in ink with corrections and additions in encil. Score, transcrit, air coy. DK-Kk, ms 799, mu 9601.1600. Title on the irst music age (in ink): Qvartetto / Asger Hammerich. Dating on the irst music age (in encil): 1859. One biolio; three olios. 10 numbered ages. 4.7x25.6 cm, scoring our orchestral arts (vl.1, vl.2, va., vc.); written in ink with corrections in ink and a ew additions in encil. EVALUATION OF SOURCES The two sources have been ket in the same cover, entitled Qvartetto in ink and dated 1859 in encil. It is striking that the arts (A) are in Hamerik s hand while the score (B) is in a oreign hand, erhas by a roessional coyist. It would usually be the other way around and it seems reasonable to assume that a score in Hamerik s hand once existed. It is clear that the two sources are related (the score is robably a coy o the assumed missing score), since they contain the same errors, such as a missing natural in b. 110 (vl.1) and a missing slur in b. 14 (vl.2). The score contains a ew corrections in ink and a ew additions in encil. The arts contain numerous encil additions, esecially in the last section o the quartet which reeats certain themes but with less slurring and dynamics than in the irst section. The added slurs, however, seem somewhat casual. A ew o the encil additions are clearly in Hamerik s hand, but others are in a oreign hand and also with a dierent tye o encil; in some cases, though, and esecially when it comes to slurring, it is not ossible to distinguish the handwriting o one rom the other. In the resent edition, the arts (A) have been chosen as the main source, but without the encil additions. Imortant variants can be ound in the list o emendations and variant readings. DCM 018 9

EDITORIAL EMENDATIONS AND ALTERNATIVE READINGS In the resent edition, short-hand notation has been exanded. The exact lacement and duration o dynamics such as crescendo and diminuendo (both as hairins and in written orm) are sometimes diicult to determine which in some cases is due to short-hand notation; this has been normalized tacitly.
