Rytterdistriktsarkiver indtil ca. 1776: Regimentsskriveren i rytterdistrikterne tog sig indtil ca. 1776 af skifteopgørelser for rytterbønderne. Amtsarkiver indtil ca. 1793: Amtmanden var skiftemyndighed for beboere på selvejergårde indtil1793 (de daværende amtmænd kunne imidlertid bestride embedet frem til deres afgang, så man kan finde skifter hos amtmændene efter 1793). Provstearkiver indtil 1807: Provsten tog sig indtil ca. 1807 af skifteopgørelser for præster og degne. Godsarkiver indtil 1851: Godsejeren tog sig indtil 1851 af skifteopgørelser for fæstebønderne. Skifter efter selvejere og købstadsfolk skal findes i retsbetjentarkiverne. Fra 1851 Retsbetjentarkiver indtil 1919: (Retsbetjent er en fællesbetegnelse for byfoged, herredsfoged og birkedommer). Folk på landet (dvs. både selvejere og fæstebønder) skiftede hos herredsfogden eller birkedommeren. Købstadsfolk skiftede hos byfogeden. Dommerarkiver efter 1919: Med retsreformen i 1919 overgik alle skifteopgørelser til dommeren, og skifteprotokollerne skal herefter findes i dommerarkiverne.
