Grasserer Vilhelm Nielsen huskes ikke blot for sine skakopgaver, men også som en stærk nær- og korrespondancespiller samt skakanalytiker. 50 år i træk deltog han i Københavns Skakforenings vinterturneringer og på 50-års dagen for sin indmeldelse (juli 1916) blev han udnævnt til æresmedlem. Vilhelm Nielsens forfatterskab strækker sig ligeledes over mere end 50 år, hvilket bl.a. ses af, at flere af hans opgaver er gengivet i Jesper Jespersens: "320 DANSKE SKAKOPGAVER" 1902 og Rayner: "CHESS PROBLEMS" 1890.

Vilhelm Nielsen Ude og Hjemme 1878-07-21 #4 c+ 6+4 I TIDSKRIFT FOR SCHACK marts 1918 plukker vi fra Jørgen Møllers mindeord ved meddelelsen om Vilhelm Nielsens død. "Hvornår han først begyndte at komponere skakopgaver er ikke ganske sikkert, men antagelig har det været omkring 1868, da han altså var 26 år gammel". (En af de ældste findes som titelopgaven til dette nummer). "Vilhelm Nielsens forfatterskab strækker sig tilbage til den tid, da dansk problemkunst overfor udlandet begyndte at gøre sig gældende, og han var en af banebryderne. De mange udenlandske opgaveturneringer: Eraturneringen i London 1856 (præmietagere: 1. Conrad Bayer, 2. Frank Healey), Bristolturneringen 1861 (1. F. Healey, 2. C. Bayer). Pariserturneringen 1867 (1. C. Bayer, 2. Sam Loyd). måtte nødvendigvis øve indflydelse på danske opgaveforfattere, og da der i 1873 blev udsendt indbydelse til den store britiske opgaveturnering i London, besluttede Vilhelm Nielsen sammen med S.A. Sørensen at prøve lykken. Resultatet var overmåde glimrende, idet S.A. Sørensen fik 1. sendings-præmie og præmien for den bedste opgave, medens Vilhelm Nielsen fik 6. sendingspræmie". (En sending bestod vist af fire opgaver der blev indsendt og derefter bedømt, hhv. som sending og enkeltvis}. (Senere opdagede man en biløsning i en af hans præmierede opgaver og nu ved udarbejdelsen af denne artikel fandt jeg endnu en biløselig præmietager}. "I STRATEGIEsturnering 1878 deltog Vilhelm Nielsen med en sending. Den gav anledning til stor diskussion i den udenlandske skakpresse, fordi dommerne udelukkede sendingen fra præmie på grund af de mange dobbeltspil i den indsendte firetrækker. Derimod tilkendte de femtrækkeren, et overordentlig vanskeligt problem med en imponerende kongemarch, præmie som turneringens bedste opgave. Det, der kendetegner Vilhelm Nielsens opgaver, der i reglen er flertrækkere, er offerkombinationer, hvorved enten en hindrende sort brik afledes, eller den sorte konge ledes ind i matfeltet. En ide han yndede at dyrke var skakfaren, i hvilken den hvide konge udsættes for en eller flere skakker". The conditions for the tournament were: "H#3 ar H#4 where the reason for the first b/ack mave becomes apparent only after the second white move has been played for tater). No more than 2 solutions, no twins, no duplex and black must play tirst". We received 57 problems from 25 campasers in 10 countries. 8 problems were collaborations by two composers! Pankratjev (4) My thanks to the Dansk Skakproblem Klub for the invitation to aet as judge in this contest, and especially to Leif Schmidt who acted as tourney controller. He sent me 57 computer-tested problems an anonymous diagrams in a very clear format. Of course Holger himself should have been the principal judge, but that was unfortunately not to be. The change af plan does however mean that it is I who, in the name af everyone connected with the tourney, have the honour and pleasure af congratulating him on his Jubilee and wishing him all the very best for the next 50 years! The standard af the competing problems was very variable. I eliminated some af them because their ideas were altogether tao simple and familiar. That applied to many af the single-line problems. In the case af a few af the twophase works there was one excellent and one weak solution, never a satisfactory recipe for a composition. Poor construction caused the exclusion af same other problems. In one example both a black queen and a black bishop were used to prevent a cook which could have been eliminated by a single black pawn. In another, ane white pawn could have replaced a black queen and two black knights. Possibly in a few cases the theme was not fully understood. For example there were two problems, each with two solutions starting with maves to the same square by a black rook and bishop. The reason for these maves (which were the first I tried when salving) was to block that square. In both cases the subsequent choice of White's first move was interestingly dependent on the Grimshaw effect and ane had to grasp the remainder of the solution in arder to understand which continuation was which... but that is not the theme of this tourney! These interesting works now have a chance to compete elsewhere. Finally, in a number of cases the white force (ar some af it) was so far out of play that it made the solution very apparent. Although this failing does not in itself disqualify a problem, it does not sit happily with the tourney theme, whose implication is surely that the solution should not be too obvious. Of course the question af whether ar not a problem is difficult to salve is a very subjective one, but because of the theme I felt justified in placing slightly greater importance on difficulty in this tourney than I should usually do. The question of anticipation is a very difficult one in the case of h#3s and h#4s. To the best of my knowledge no collection of helpmates of this length has the detailed thematic indexing found in my own h#2 collection. The Problem Data Base (PDB) contains an enormous wealth of material but, because in many cases it is hard to specify useful search criteria, research in it can be very timeconsuming. Nevertheless it remains an invaluable resource. Here are some brief notes on the most complete anticipations. The references with PDB numbers can easily be looked up on screen at http://www. softdecc. com/pdb/index. pdb where there are instructions in English. N 2 (Henrik Juel: Kc6 Bg5/Ke6 Sg6) is fully anticipated by one solution of PDB P0542488 (a h#4). N 13 (Viktor Syzonenko: Ka7/Kf4) is completely anticipated by (among others) P0556089, which is however misprinted in the PDB: g5 should be a black pawn! Black bishop tempi such as in N 16 (J. Kupper) have been shown many times, e.g. the 6-piece setting P0523524. N 48 (Reinhardt Fiebig: Kb4/Ke8) owes too much to P0552854. N 56 (A.N. Pankratjev: Ka2/Kd6) is completely anticipated by P0506680. And now at last to the successful problems! 1 PR 9330. C+ 4+12 The idea of shielding the white king from check is a well-known one, but it is made more subtle it, as here, he must move in arder to use up a tempo. Playing the shielding maves at the beginning and the king maves at the latest possible stage perfectly exemplifies the idea of the tourney. The construction is good, with economical use of the material, especially the white pawns. An elegant problem. 9331. Menachem Witztum 2 PR H#3 2.1.1". C+ 7+7 2 PR 9331. Great ingenuity has been used to present this content with only 9 men, but the white play, especially in the 1.Re4 solution, is really rather dull. 1 RO 9334. The first moves, opening lines needed on move 3, are excellent but the rest is frankly rather pedestrian, being based on obvious access and blocking play. Very quickly solved. 9334. Although the black play is better than in the previous problem the position is a little untidy and the move 1."Rxb4 is mere padding. 9336. Zoltan Laborczi 3 RO 9337. Zoltan Laborczi 4 RO H#4 c+ 3+6 H#4 c+ 4+7 3 RO 9336. Zoltan Laborczi (HU). 1 d1l f4 2 Le4 fxe5 3 Lh7 exf6 4 Dh1 f7#. This is the best of the single-line problems. Black's first move is needed to close a line which is established on his fourth. The composer has chosen the most appropriate location for the black pawn on the second rank. It could have been on c, e or f2 (with a knight promotion) but the paradoxical promotion to a bishop which looks as though it might block h7 was definitely desirable. However, I think it would have been preferable to start the black bishop on g2, since 1.Bh3?? then also highlights the logic of the solution. Although PDB P0516193 is perhaps a partial anticipation, I discount it because it has two black queens in its initial position. 4 RO 9337. Zoltan Laborczi (HU). 1 Da6+ Kb1 2 g5 + Kc1 3 Lf5 Kd1 4 Lh3 g3#. Another good single-line problem, this time with a spectacular hideaway first move set with a minimum of material. 9338. This surprising problem would have been placed higher but for the faet that a black pawn would suffice on g-6, removing the need for the Pc4 and Bd2. 6 RO 9339. The mates are very familiar but previously have usually been presented with the emphasis on the echoes (e.g. PDB P0521589). In faet removing the f pawns from this problem produces a sound triple echo, but of course that would be unthematic in this tourney. The need for the rooks to make an initial tempo move because the black king cannot do so later without getting in the white king's way is thematic, but a higher placing was impossible because the 1.Rb1 solution is already found in essence in P0550257. 9340. The first mave eliminates a possible e.p. capture in the mating position, a device which I expected to see more aften in this tourney. Despite the very few pieces this idea is well hidden and deserves acknowledgement. (I should also like to add a small footnote on 9340: The white knight's position an e5 is visually the best, but other positions are possible and I made a small discovery which goes beyond the bounds af this tourney, in which twins were not allowed. lf the knight is moved to a3 and a black pawn added on d5, a sound and relevant twin may be obtained by Pb2> b4.) In this number there are included 22 original Andernach h#2s from the article by Erik Hansen showing always one ideal mate. None of them entered an award, despite a large number I missed any deeper idea among them. The level of the competition was only average, I missed real masterpieces among fairies and thus, despite my usual generosity, I decided to award only 8 fairy works. 5 out of 11 retros are awarded in the respective subsection. 8861. This is a logical ground for the solution, where White forces Holst promotions and then executes his main plans. Counting the threat and two variations together, we see 3 times a mate by capture of a white piece paralysing the black one that in turn gives a check. Besides antibattery scheme there is a good deal of bystrategy adding a variety to a content, unfortunately, there is a mating double check in 1.Ge1 solution.

Derfor har vi bedt om at låne et billede og samtidig bedt ham fortælle lidt om sig selv. Jeg er født 19.6. 1954 og bor i Randers sammen med Birgitte. Er papfar til to voksne børn, som forlængst er flyttet hjemmefra. Uddannet som bibliotekar og har arbejdet som musikbibliotekar i Randers siden 1978. IM i K-skak og samler litteratur om skakspillets historie og kulturhistorie. Vi holder gerne ferie i vores forfaldne hus på Samsø eller med telt og vandrestøvler i Lappland.
