Jesper Bruun Rasmussen

Paul Gauguin and Georges Braque world class art Fortunately, it is becoming more and more common for works by some of the greatest names in international art history to show up on the Danish auction market. This is also the case at this summer s auction at Bredgade, when we will be presenting two early works by Paul Gauguin and a still-life by Georges Braque, all from Danish collections. Bord de l Aven is the title of the work by the French artist Paul Gauguin, who had ties to Denmark through his marriage to Mette Gad. The work, which depicts the river Aven in Brittany, was painted in c. 1886-88, a time when Gauguin for longer periods stayed in the artist town of Pont-Aven. The painting is a shimmering, Impressionist snapshot with the characteristic spontaneous application of small brush strokes which preceded his later emphasis on the surface and Symbolist idiom. We have had the work verified at the Wildenstein Institute in Paris, and it will now be listed in the Catalogue Critique de l Oeuvre du Peintre Paul Gauguin. The artist is also represented at the auction with a charming still-life of cherries and a wine decanter that he painted as a young man in the years from 1874 1878. The provenance of both paintings can be traced back to Mette Gad, and they have both been offered for sale by my father Arne Bruun Rasmussen in 1954 and 1976 respectively (cat.no. 776 and 782). If we, at Bruun Rasmussen, feel a special affinity to Gauguin, it is thanks to an auction scene in film director Henning Carlsen s movie Oviri (The Wolf At The Door) from 1986 starring Donald Sutherland as Gauguin. At one point, the artist tries to sell a number of his own paintings at auction to finance a trip to the Pacific. The scene was filmed at our location at Bredgade, and I had the honour to perform as the auctioneer! Cherries make a further appearance in the still-life Le compotier from 1942 by Gauguin s compatriot Georges Braque, who was of a different ilk entirely, however. With their Cubist fragmentation and use of simultaneous perspectives, he and Pablo Picasso were at the forefront of one of the most significant paradigm shifts in modern art. In the 1940s, the still-life played a central role in Braque s art, and the work up for auction is a representative and extremely well-composed work from the period. The arranged objects are viewed both from the front and from above at the same time, and the work s expression fluctuates between three-dimensional and flat evidence that Braque adhered to the doctrine of Cubism throughout his life (cat.no. 779). With works by Danish and international artists, we also focus on art photography during Copenhagen Photo Festival from 5 15 June. Olafur Eliasson leads the pack with photographs from his famous Iceland Series from the early 00s, closely followed by French-Hungarian photographer Brassaïs depiction of Place de la Concorde, Paris, in 1939 (cat.no. 1057 and 1072). At the preview at 2 pm on Sunday 8 June, we invite you to a gallery talk on the role of photography in contemporary art by Kristine Kern from Fotografisk Center. Per Kirkeby and Michael Kvium are considered two of the most important Danish artists alive today, and at the auction we will be presenting a number of important works by both, including Kirkeby s large painting U.T. from 2006 and Kvium s two distinctive paintings from around the turn of the millennium no holds barred depictions of people with all their peculiarities and deformities (cat.no. 855, 852 and 862). I hope you will enjoy the show! Jesper Bruun Rasmussen

Paul Gauguin 1888. Photo reproduced from Maurice Malingue: Lettres de Gauguin, Paris 1949, pl. 2. Paul Gauguin in Pont-Aven Since we offered it for sale at auction in 1954, the painting Bord de l Aven has enjoyed a relatively obscure existence in Danish ownership. The Wildenstein Institute in Paris has recently dated the work to 1886 1888, the time when Paul Gauguin had two extended stays in Pont-Aven in Brittany; the first time from June to October 1886, and the second from February to October 1888. Paul Gauguin had left behind a Danish wife and family life in Copenhagen, which was increasingly falling apart, as a result of his radical decision to leave a financially comfortable position as a banker in Paris in pursuit of a career as an artist. By the late 1870s, Gauguin had already made the acquaintance of the grand old man of Impressionism, Camille Pissarro (1830-1903), who would provide the inspiration he needed to realise his dream of becoming an artist. His first stay in Pont-Aven was productive, and in October 1886 he wrote to his wife Mette that he was doing a lot of studies of the landscape around Pont-Aven and spontaneous paintings of the nature. The Wildenstein catalogue notes that small, vibrating brush strokes which very much define the work up for auction are a common feature of his paintings from this time, also as a reminiscence of the artist s brief Neo- Impressionist phase. The same features are found in works from the artist s second stay in Pont-Aven in 1888, together with examples of a more synthetic emphasis on the surface, which the artist had begun to take on on the Caribbean island of Martinique in the intervening period, and which would later become his signature. In his book on his parents, Mette and Paul Gauguin (Copenhagen, 1956), Gauguin s son Pola describes the challenges his father faced during the second Pont-Aven stay as a battle between two conflicting trends: (...) on the one hand, a colour-rhythmic pictorial effect, and on the other, one of a distinct definition of form (...). The surface of the painting in Bord de l Aven is a shimmering, impressionistic array of hues and contrasts, in which a spatial perspective occurs in the interaction between very fine and broader brush strokes. The contours of the river bank in particular also endow the painting with a distinct line, which discreetly accentuates the painting as a decorative surface. The work Bord de l Aven thus casts an interesting new light over the world-famous artist, who at this time is in a period of personal and artistic unrest. BRUUN RASMUSSEN BREDGADE AUCTION 849 45

Georges Braque s cubist still-life As the founders of Cubism in the years from 1907 1914, Georges Braque (1882-1963) and Pablo Picasso were the godfathers of what was probably the most significant landslide and paradigm shift in modern art. The fragmentation of the picture plane and the use of multiple perspectives or viewpoints in the same painting is a radical contribution to an art debate ongoing since the Renaissance: Reality versus art and the relationship between the way we experience and depict our spatial surroundings. For Braque, this schism is not merely a passing interest in the earliest years of Cubism, but fuel for an artistic life project, and up to the mid-1940s, the cubist still-life is completely central to his art. Le compotier is the title of the work up for auction, and it is a representative, well composed and highly serene still-life from 1942, in which the artist balances a few typical elements on a canvas that visually fluctuates between three-dimensional and flat. Due to the marked contrast of the foreground and background colour, the fruit bowl and the wine glass are clearly placed in a three-dimensional setting, but they are viewed both from the front and the top. At the same time, the bright, white contour renders the fruit bowl two-dimensional, attaching it decoratively to the surface of the painting. The overlaying of the pear, glass, napkin and books with fragments of text also pulls it back to early Cubism. 50 BRUUN RASMUSSEN BREDGADE AUCTION 849

Lars Morell on the present relief: "In August 1954, Jorn arranged a ceramics conference at Manifattura Giuseppe Mazotti in Albissola. This relief was probably made on that occasion, making it one of the first works produced by Jorn in Albissola, where many of his later masterpieces came to be. By their nature, reliefs lie somewhere between pottery and painting because the clay is rolled out into a sheet to form a "canvas". With these reliefs, Jorn transferred his experience with ceramics to the painting. The black scratches in the clay, the glaze "which is thin when poured on and becomes glass-like when fired" changed his colour vision. The motif of the man and the bird is still reminiscent of CoBrA in its structure, but everything that happened in Jorn's art during the 1950s is hidden in this small relief." Literature: "The sculptor Erik Thommesen", 2001, Henning Jørgensen's catalogue raisonné no. 46. Provenance: Architect Finn Juhl. Provenance: Architect Arne Jacobsen. Provenance: Architects Ina and Steen Østergaard. It is a great honour at this auction to present a great work by Erik Thommesen. An example of the artist's sovereign and singular approach; works of illustrious provenance that have belonged to two of the greatest masters of Danish furniture design, Finn Juhl and Arne Jacobsen respectively. Erik Thommesen started creating wooden sculptures in the late 1930s and his affiliation with the artist association Høstudstillingen made him a natural part of the CoBrA movement in the late 1940s. His affinity with the abstract-expressive CoBrA artists isn't based on the formal, exterior aspects of his art - rather in the notion that art should be something universally human. Early in his artistic career, Thommesen focused his attention on a number of aspects of human nature that were to become recurrent motifs of his art: the girl with braids, the head, the man and woman, mother and child. Over time, Thommesen's work distances itself from its naturalistic origin whereby the motif in a subtle, roundabout way reached a symbiosis with its material source: wood, nature. His works evade definable form to become independent, rhythmic, elevated and enigmatic existences in space. DKK 300,000-400,000 / 40,000-53,500 66 BRUUN RASMUSSEN BREDGADE AUCTION 849

807 807 CD KAREL APPEL b. Amsterdam 1921, d. 2006 Preliminary work for the mural in the Stedelijk Museum restaurant, Amsterdam, 1956. Unsigned. Gouache on paper. 48 x 94 cm. Literature: "Karel Appel Retrospective 1945-2005", Meulensteen Art Museum, 2005, ill. p. 71. Provenance: Bart van Kasteel, architect on the rebuilding of The Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam, 1956. Gift from the artist. Provenance: Dutch art dealer and artist Herman Krikhaar, gift from the friend Bart van Kasteel. In 1956 the Dutch artist Karel Appel was commissioned to do the mural for the Stedelijk Museum's new restau rant. For the consignment he made use of stained glass for the first time. The vivid colours and the bird motif are, however, very characteristic elements of the art of the Cobra artist Appel for whom colour was a vital part of a spontaneous expression.the Stedelijk Museum was closely connected with the Cobra group and plays an important role in the history of the movement. In November 1949, the Museum was housing the "International Exhibition of Experimenting Art", organised by the Dutch group of experimenting artists, including Appel. The exhibition caused great sensation and must be considered to be one of the most important manifestations of Cobra art during the movement's short lifetime (1948-51).
