2 Knowledge Skills Competences Students should acquire knowledge and understanding of: The structure of the English language English grammar and its conventions including sentence types, syntax, constituents and forms, and word classes Students should be able to: Identify word classes and sentence constituents and forms as well as and typical grammatical and linguistic patterns and structures Edit texts from a lexicogrammatical perspective Communicate about grammar in a mostly idiomatically correct manner Students should: Demonstrate their knowledge of and skills in sentence analysis using mostly correct grammatical metalanguage Develop an understanding of and reflect on their own learning process, progression, and future learning needs within this area Main Topics Word classes Sentence constituents and forms Syntax and sentence structure Sentence analysis Editing texts Linguisitic metalanguage Teaching Methods The course combines lectures, tasks, exercises, and cases relating to the topic at hand. Purpose Knowledge This course enables students to: Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of US and UK society, culture and politics Communicate the knowledge and understanding acquired through the course in precise and correct English Independently search for, select, and process information as well as create an overview hereof Identify similarities and differences between American and British societies, and compare these to, e.g., Danish society. Students should acquire knowledge and understanding of: UK history, society, politics, and culture US history, society, politics, and culture Information search and selection The book report as a genre Skills Students should be able to: Plan and give professional presentations Communicate in the acquired variety of English (British, American or other recognised variety) in an idiomatically and contextually appropriate manner Search and select information, and create processed overviews hereof Write a book report based on independent reading and research Students should be able to: Competences 5 / 14

6 Plan and carry out oral presentations of a topic, independently and based on thorough information search and selection Demonstrating precise and correct use of English in speaking and writing Develop an understanding of and reflect on their own learning process, progression, and future learning needs within this area. Teaching Methods The course combines lectures, tasks, exercises, and independent work. Group and class discussions as well as independent student presentations, individual or in groups, support the development of communication and language skills and skills in information search and selection Personal reflection is expected throughout the course. 7 Relation to Bachelor Thesis in the 7 th semester Compulsory Tasks and Activities Examination/ Final Evaluation Materials and Titles During this course, students will improve their skills in: Information search and selection Writing professionally Planning and giving presentations Interpersonal communication Personal reflection Oral presentations during the course Written book report of a fictional novel read independently is to be handed in at the end of the course. The length of the book report should be approx. three standard pages. The syllabus in US/UK Culture and Society and the skills and competences acquired form part of the individual Oral Proficiency exam at the beginning of the 2 nd semester. Based on their performance at this exam, students will receive a mark for US/UK Culture and Society as per the 7-point grading scale. Herefter afleveredes sedlerne til mig, hvorefter vi gennemførte mundtlig evaluering i plenum. Følgende er opsummering af både de skriftlige kommentarer og den mundtlige evaluering i plenum: Nogle studerende nævnte, at de havde svært ved at se, hvordan de skulle kunne bruge det de lærer i grammatikundervisningen fremadrettet, og at det betyder meget for motivationen. Dog mente mange, at metoden, vi ofte anvendte i grammatikundervisningen, hvor et eksempel gennemgås, hvorefter de diskuterer det i grupper og dernæst igen på klassen, fungerer godt. Nogle studerende nævnte, at de manglede mere fokus på US/UK Culture i forløbet, så der var mindre selvstændigt arbejde med præsentationer og mere fokus på gennemgang af de faglige emner fra bøgerne. Materialerne fungerede generelt godt, særlig grammatikbøgerne af Crystal og Bache. De studerende er samstemmende glade for læringsmiljøet, hvor der er lige så 13 / 14

14 megen fokus på læring og proces som på resultat. Gruppediskussioner, præsentationer ved studerende og lektionernes klare struktur nævntes som klare fordele ved forløbet. Undervisernes evaluering Dato for undervisernes evaluering: Deltagere i evalueringssamtalen: MBDA Evt. kritiske forhold i de studerendes evaluering, herunder de studerendes tilbagemelding på opmærksomhedsfelter: Da nogle studerende så tidligt i studieforløbet har svært ved at forstå, hvorfor det er nødvendigt at arbejde med grammatik, er det væsentligt at gøre mere ud af framingen heraf i undervisningen og at bringe flere og opgaver ind i undervisningen, som belyser fordelene herved. Denne årgang af studerende har ikke noget sammenligningsgrundlag ift. at kunne tage stilling til overgangen fra modulstruktur til semesterstruktur, da de kun kender til den nye semesterstruktur. De studerende mente dog, at det fungere bedst med en vekselvirkning mellem de forskellige fagområder, så der skabes variation over hele undervisingsdage. Fagforløbets bidrag til undervisernes forpligtende strategiske sammenhæng: Der har løbende under forløbet været givet både mundtlig og skriftlig feedback, dog primært mundtlig feedback i forbindelse med studerendes præsentationer af deres tekstproduktion (novel review). Fagforløbets bidrag til løsning af kerneopgaven: Faget har været teoretisk og praktisk med inddragelse af eksempler på virksomheders onlinekommunikation. Vurdering af modulets anvendelse af studieaktivitetsmodellens forskellige rum: Målet har været, at der skulle være en god balance mellem underviserinitierede, dialogbaserede oplæg og studerendes selvstændige arbejde, primært i grupper, dvs. inddragelse af alle 4 kvadranter i SAM.
