3 Modern Design Autumn Sale at Bruun Rasmussen We are pleased to present the new Design catalogue featuring a rich and varied selection of modern furniture, lighting and decorative art. This impressive array of Modern Design will hopefully be met with enthusiasm and passion by our Danish and International audience. At this auction we are especially delighted to be able to offer a number of pieces created by and coming from professor Jørgen Kastholm s personal collection. Among the pieces coming from the designer s home in Düsseldorf are his dining room suite and a prototype of what is often considered to be Kastholm s masterpiece: the Scimitar chair, designed in A section in the catalogue is dedicated to the Kastholm pieces. The furniture is characterised by a number of rare original pieces made by some of the most well known architects and designers. Poul Kjærholm is represented with a pair of the so-called Holscher-chair designed in 1952 and only manufactured for friends and family, along with two extremely rare daybeds in oak, an until now unknown model from the same year. Attracting attention also, is the pair of Grete Jalk s sculptural shell-chairs with a side table in oak veneer. Arne Jacobsen is represented with his impressive Ox-chair and no less than four beautifully patinated Egg-chairs. Among the rarities, the visual Shell-chair designed 1963 by the Danish chairmaker par excellence Hans J. Wegner should also be emphasized. Wegner s unique craftmanship can also be found in a sewing box of oak from 1949 or in the delicate rosewood sewing table designed five years earlier. Another designer also known for his meticulous craftmanship, Peder Moos, is represented with his unique Bateau Lit, a boat-shaped bed in cedar wood. A fine selection of modern lighting is also offered. The highlight being the elegant 1927 Poul Henningsen 5/3 Pat. Appl. floor lamp with red and bronze copper shades. Leading the silver section is a large Georg Jensen candelabrum with characteristic grape decoration only rarely seen at auction. Svend Hammershøi s lidded bowl should also be emphasized, and as a renewal, silver jewellery, by Georg Jensen as well as fine wristwatches by Urban Jürgensen. A fine section of decorative art includes bronze lid vases by Carl Halier and Patrick Nordström and an interesting selection of ceramic works by Axel Salto. Gertrud Vasegaard is represented with fine examples of her work, together with a small collection of unique pieces by various artists, from Royal Copenhagen.. We hope you will enjoy the catalogue!

7 Moderne efterårsauktion hos Bruun Rasmussen Det er med stor fornøjelse, at vi kan præsentere det nye Design katalog med et righoldigt og varieret udbud af moderne møbler, belysning og kunsthåndværk. Dette imponerende udvalg af moderne design vil forhåbentlig imødekomme og begejstre vores danske og internationale publikum. Med særlig glæde kan vi på denne auktion udbyde en række moderne møbler, designet af og hidhørende fra professor Jørgen Kastholms personlige samling. Blandt de enestående møbler fra designerens eget private hjem i Düsseldorf er Kastholms spisestue samt en prototype af det, der ofte anses for at være hans mesterstykke: Scimitar stolen, formgivet i En sektion af kataloget er viet til Kastholms møbler. Møbelsektionen er kendetegnet ved en hel række sjældne originale møbler designet af nogle af de bedst kendte møbelarkitekter. Poul Kjærholm er repræsenteret med et par af de såkaldte Holscher-stole, formgivet i 1952, og kun fremstillet til venner og familie, samt med to yderst sjældne daybeds i egetræ - en indtil nu ukendt model fra samme år. Et par af Grete Jalks skulpturelle skalstol med sidebord i fineret egetræ tiltrækker sig ligeledes opmærksomhed sammen med Arne Jacobsens imponerende Oksestol og hele fire smukt patinerede eksemplarer af Ægget. Blandt de sjældne møbler skal også fremhæves den visuelle Skal-stol, tegnet i 1963 af den danske stolemager par excellence, Hans J. Wegner. Dennes unikke snedkerkvaliteter er ligeledes at finde i et syskrin af egetræ fra 1949 og i det fine palisander sybord formgivet fem år tidligere. Peder Moos, der ligeledes er kendt for sit omhyggelige håndværk, er repræsenteret med den enestående Bateau Lit, en bådformet seng i cedertræ. Belysningsdelen byder på et fint udvalg af lamper og belysning med et højdepunkt i Poul Henningsens elegante 5/3 Pat. Appl. standerlampe fra 1927 med skærme af kobber med rød overside. Sølv-sektionens topnummer er en stor Georg Jensen kandelaber med karakteristisk drue-dekoration, der kun ses sjældent på auktion. Svend Hammershøis skål skal ligeledes fremhæves, og som noget nyt, sølvsmykker fra Georg Jensen samt fine armbåndsure fra Urban Jürgensen. Af kunsthåndværk er der et bredt udvalg, herunder bronzelågvaser fra Carl Halier og Patrick Nordström samt et spændende udvalg af Axel Salto keramik. Gertrud Vasegaard er repræsenteret med et par fine eksempler på hendes arbejde. Endelig har vi også fornøjelsen af at kunne udbyde en lille samling af unika kunsthåndværk fra Den Kongelige Porcelænsfabrik, hvor en række forskellige kunstnere i årenes løb har haft mulighed for at udfolde deres talenter på porcelænet. 10 DECORATIVE ART Royal Copenhagen Unique Pieces Royal Copenhagen has a long tradition of working with the greatest artists of the time. It dates back to 1821 when G.F. Hetsch was hired as the artistic director at the Royal Porcelain Factory, where he initiated cooperation with the Art Academy. He assigned several artists to the factory, notably the flower painter I.L. Jensen who distinguished himself with his multicoloured overglaze paintings. Since then, a steady flow of artists has had the opportunity to unfold their talents on Royal Danish Porcelain and in the 1990 ies some of Denmark s best visual artists accepted the invitation to learn more about the techniques and methods used at the old manufactory founded in Names of note include Jens Birkemose, Carl- Henning Pedersen, Lise Malinovsky, Arne Haugen Sørensen, Maja-Lisa Engelhardt, Peter Brandes, Torben Ebbesen and Doris Bloom. The partnership has been of great success for both parties the artists have experimented with form, colour and expression, and have been overwhelmed by realising how vivid, unreliable and unpredictable porcelain is - while Royal Copenhagen has received some of the most forward looking, beautiful, and interesting unique art pieces. Some of these can be seen and enjoyed in this special section of the catalogue dedicated to Unique Pieces from Royal Copenhagen. The lot no are subject to Full VAT and are inditated with an asterix (*). Please see Conditions of Purchase Maja Lisa Engelhardt s language is primarily abstract and inspired by nature. Working with porcelain one motive kept recurring: a bird s wing, a theme she has also worked with in painting and graphic design. She explains: The underglaze technique accentuates an object s immaterial essence. 12 DECORATIVE ART Jens Birkemose s abstract decorations on porcelain give a clear impression of his affinity with nature the force in both his expression and use of colour is quite overwhelming. Also his fascination with the unpredictable is reflected in his decorations, where dripping glaze is suddenly given a life of its own and subtle transitions are combined with abrupt ones. 14 DECORATIVE ART 741 Lise Malinovsky started working with Royal Copenhagen in From the very beginning she was deeply inspired by the new way in which to work with colour. It was no longer possible to make a mistake and paint over, because done is done, but she quickly mastered the old techniques and subsequently experimented with new ones. 17 746 Bjørn Nørgaard has been experimenting with many diverse materials and often makes use of these to support his stories. 18 DECORATIVE ART Doris Bloom started working with Royal Copenhagen in She is educated as a ceramist, which clearly shows in her figure group. She initially found porcelain to be a stubborn material and difficult to control especially the colours, which change under firing. 22 DECORATIVE ART Torben Ebbesen is more subdued, but not less experimental working with porcelain than we know him to be as a sculptor and painter. He explains his fascination with the material: The motivation remains curiosity and the motives are still a matter of coincidence and luck and continues: In my thought I am very, very old but at the tip of the paintbrush I am hardly born. 24 DECORATIVE ART Carl Henning Pedersen s imaginative universe is built on fables, myths and fairytales. The mask is at the core of his art and the affiliation to the spontaneous-abstract movement Cobra ( ) quite clear. His colour scheme is often characterized by vivid colours; red, orange, purple and green colours, but the blue the colour of the sky and the sea has always had a prominent place in his works. This is also true in his ceramics. The artist himself has said: I love to paint with these ceramic colour glazes. When I paint a bird on a jar or on a dish, it feels as if I am painting a Bird Phoenix who will be reborn from its life in obscurity to a radiant life in the high temperatures of the ceramic kiln. 760 * CARL-HENNING PEDERSEN b. 30 DECORATIVE ART Arne Haugen Sørensen gives way to both colours and forms in his porcelain. Sometimes his half figurative half surrealistic motifs are combined with a true play of glowing colours like in his favourite motifs of Leda and the Swan, and at other times he is working in an almost minimalist way with only a few brush strokes on the white porcelain. 772 * ARNE HAUGEN SØRENSEN b. 33 779 Jørn Larsen had his starting point in Concrete Realism. The strict geometrical idiom in his paintings consisting in straight and parallel lines and an almost clinical tightness has been transferred directly to the porcelain. 36 DECORATIVE ART Peter Brandes began his prolific cooperation with Royal Copenhagen in 1991, which has resulted in several exciting unique pieces, primarily large porcelain vases and plates. Brandes has in particular been fascinated with the famous Danish underglaze technique developed in the 1880 s.
