5 ,QWURGXFWLRQ Audio files in the following formats can be edited with the help of EditPro: MPEG 1 layer 2, MPEG 1/2 layer 3 (also known as MP3 ) and MPEG 2.5 layer 3 *). EditPro includes the following individual functions: Play back audio files Copy audio files Cut out portions of audio files Paste portions of audio files Insert markers Fade-in and fade-out These instructions are intended to help you get acquainted with EditPro as quickly as possible, and to take full advantage of all included functions. In order to keep these instructions as short as possible, we assume that the user has basic knowledge of Windows functions. If you are not familiar with Windows 95, 98 or NT, please refer to the user s manual for the respective operating system. Before installing the program, please make sure that your PC fulfills all system requirements (see page 7). Scope of Delivery 1 CD ROM 1 dongle These operating instructions *) MPEG 2.5 layer 3 is a proprietary enhancement of the MPEG standard developed by the Fraunhofer Society IIS in Erlangen, Germany. 7 ,QVWDOOLQJ(GLW3UR Before installing the program from the included CD ROM or floppy disk, please make sure that your PC fulfills all system requirements. System Requirements Your PC must fulfill the following requirements in order to assure that EditPro functions in accordance with your expectations: CPU: Graphics card: RAM: Available hard disk space: Sound card: Operating system Pentium, at least 120 MHz SVGA graphics card or better with 1024 x 768 pixels and 16 bit color depth (65,000 colors) at least 16 MB at least 40 MB 16 bit sound card Windows 95, 98 or NT with service pack 3 and installed basic components from MS Internet Explorer 4.0 Installation The EditPro application can be run with the following operating systems: Windows 95 and 98, or Windows NT with service pack 3! Perform the following steps in order to install the program: Insert the included CD ROM into the appropriate drive at the PC. The CD ROM starts automatically. However, if the auto-start function has been deactivated at your computer, click the Start button and then Run. Then enter the designation for the CD ROM drive followed by the file name setup.exe. Select the EditPro option from the Work on it menu and start installation by double clicking. Follow the instructions which appear at the monitor until the installation program is finished. The program installs Edit- Pro to your PC (directory path: C:\Programs\May- (GLW3URYHUVLRQUHYLVLRQOHYHO 7

8 ,QVWDOOLQJ(GLW3UR ah\editpro32), sets up its own program group and installs an icon. Inserting the Dongle After installation has been completed, plug the dongle into the parallel port (LPT 1). If a printer is connected to this port, pull out the printer plug, plug in the dongle and then plug the printer into the back of the dongle. 9 %DVLF)XQFWLRQV Starting and Exiting the Program In order to start the program double click the EditPro icon or click Start Programs Mayah EditPro32. In order to exit EditPro, click the X button at the upper righthand corner of the main program window (see figure 1), or select Exit from the File menu (Alt+F4). The Main Program Window After starting the program, the main program window appears: Menu Bar Tool Bars Info Line Status Line Display Window for Audio Files Figure 1: Main Program Window The various editing tools are displayed at the upper portion of the window (see figure 2), and the status line appears at the bottom. Selected files are displayed as graphic representations in the middle portion of the window - shown above in gray (see figure 3 on page 11). (GLW3URYHUVLRQUHYLVLRQOHYHO 9

10 %DVLF)XQFWLRQV EditPro provides the user with various functions for editing audio files. 11 7KH0DLQ3URJUDP:LQGRZ Audio files are displayed in their own adjustable windows (in the main window) as graphic representations with volume level in the Y-axis (vertical axis) and time in the X-axis (horizontal axis): Figure 3: Graphic Representation of an Audio File Each file consists of a series of frames (see glossary). The frames are delineated within the graphic representation by means of vertical lines. The height of each line corresponds to the amplitude (volume) of the respective frame. The scale at the left-hand side of the window includes values ranging from 0 to 255. Frame amplitudes can be read from this scale. The displayed portion of the audio file can be expanded or compressed by repositioning the red arrow (lower limit) and the green arrow (upper limit). $GMXVWLQJ:LQGRZ6L]H The size of the main window, as well as the size of the file display windows can be adjusted as desired. If several audio files have been opened simultaneously, individual file display windows can be arranged in a cascading fashion (overlapping), or as tiles (next to each other). Click the or the button to zoom in or out. Click the button to restore the display to its original size. )LOH,QIRUPDWLRQ EditPro displays the attributes of open audio files (file format, mono/stereo, bit and sampling rates). Click the question mark in the toolbar, or open the Help menu. 2WKHU+HOS)XQFWLRQV If you are able to access the Internet with your PC, you can query directly by selecting Websites from the Help menu. 13 3OD\LQJ%DFN$XGLR)LOHV Opening Audio Files Click the button and select the desired directory and file name in order to open an existing audio file. Protection against overwriting can be activated before opening a file if desired. Activate the Open with write-protect checkbox in the open file dialog box to this end. Click the button in order to open a new, empty file. 14 3OD\LQJ%DFN$XGLR)LOHV Closing Audio Files There are several ways to close an open file: Close without saving changes Click in the file display window or File Close Close and save Click in the main window or File Save Close and save with a new name File Save as 14 0$<$+&RPPXQLFDWLRQV*PE+

15 (GLWLQJ$XGLR)LOHV Opening Audio Files In order to open an existing audio file click the button and select the desired directory and file name. In order to open a new, empty file click the button. Saving Audio Files There are two ways to save an open file: Save with the existing name Click in the main window or File Save Save with a new name File Save as Positioning the Playback Line The playback line is the thin red line which appears in the file display window (see figure 3 on page 11). In order to move the playback line to the desired position press the right mouse key with the mouse pointer at the appropriate location. The playback line cannot be positioned while a file is being played back. (GLW3URYHUVLRQUHYLVLRQOHYHO 15

16 (GLWLQJ$XGLR)LOHV Selecting an Audio Range In order to select a specific range from within an audio file, press and hold the left mouse key with the mouse pointer in the file display window, and drag the mouse pointer to the left or to the right. A brightly highlighted range is created. In order to reposition the beginning or the end of the selected range, press and hold the left mouse key with the mouse pointer in the highlighted range, and drag the mouse pointer to the desired point beyond the beginning or the end of the highlighted range. The beginning or the end of the selected range is repositioned to the desired location. This function allows for fine adjustment of the selected range. Cutting Out Portions of Audio Files In order to delete a portion of an audio file, select the desired range and then click on: or Edit Cut or Ctrl + X The selected range is copied to the Windows clipboard and is deleted from the file display window. The rest of the file to the right of the deleted section is then shifted to the left in order to fill in the gap created by deletion. Two white frame delineation lines remain at the cut (outside edges of the deleted section). These white lines are marker lines only and do not affect the file s audio characteristics. They remain visible until the file has been saved and reopened. 16 0$<$+&RPPXQLFDWLRQV*PE+

17 &OHDULQJ3RUWLRQVRI$XGLR)LOHV Clearing Portions of Audio Files In order to clear a portion of an audio file, select the desired range and then: Press the Delete key or Select Edit Erase selection. The selected range is deleted from the file display window and the rest of the file to the right of the deleted section is shifted to the left. Two white frame delineation lines remain at the cut (beginning and end of the cleared section). These white lines are marker lines only and do not affect the file s audio characteristics. They remain visible until the file has been saved and reopened. If the button is clicked or Ctrl+X is used to clear the selected range, it is deleted and copied to the clipboard. Data which had previously been stored to the clipboard are lost. In order to clear everything outside of the selected range, select: Edit Clear unselected Only the selected range remains within the file. In order to undo this operation in its entirety, click twice or select Edit Undo twice. The first undo operation restores the portion of the file to the left of the selected range, and the second operation restores the portion to the right. (GLW3URYHUVLRQUHYLVLRQOHYHO 17

18 (GLWLQJ$XGLR)LOHV Copying Portions of Audio Files In order to copy a portion of an audio file, select the desired range and then click on or select Edit Copy or use the key combination Ctrl+C The selected range is copied to the Windows clipboard and is available for further use. Inserting Copied Portions of Audio Files In order to paste a copied or deleted portion to another position within the same file, or to insert it into another file, click the left mouse key with the mouse pointer at the desired location and then press the Insert key. Then click on or select Edit Paste or use the key combination Ctrl+V The portion of the audio file which has been copied to the clipboard is now inserted at the selected position. 18 0$<$+&RPPXQLFDWLRQV*PE+

19 )DGH,QDQG)DGH2XW Fade-In and Fade-Out Fade-ins and fade-outs can be added to audio files at any desired position with EditPro. EditPro is equipped with four different types of fade characteristics to this end: Figure 6: Fade Characteristics Fade depth can be adjusted under File Configuration... (see Adjusting Fades on page 20). The desired range must first be selected in order to add a fade to a given audio passage. Click one of the following three buttons for the desired fade type (fade-in only, fade-out only, fade-in and fade-out): Figure 7: Adding Fades Uniform Volume Level Adjustments The volume levels of selected passages can be uniformly increased or decreased with EditPro. Click one of the following buttons in order to increase or decrease volume in a uniform fashion: Figure 8: Uniform Volume Level Changes However, volume cannot be increased to a level greater than that of the original file. 20 (GLWLQJ$XGLR)LOHV Adjusting Fades Fade depth and duration can be adjusted with EditPro (fade characteristics). Select the following menu function to this end: File Configuration... The following dialog box appears: Figure 9: Setting Fade Characteristics Fade duration (number of frames: the more frames you select, the longer the fade becomes) can be adjusted separately for fade-in and fade-out, and the difference in volume as a percentage from the beginning to the end of the fade can be entered. If you have installed more than one sound card to your PC, you can also select the sound card to be used in this dialog box. If you want to use more than one sound card, select the first available sound card for EditPro. Undo all Fades In order to undo all fades in the currently selected audio file click the button. The file is then restored to the status which prevailed immediately after it was opened. 20 0$<$+&RPPXQLFDWLRQV*PE+

21 :RUNLQJZLWK0DUNHUV Working with Markers Markers can be used to identify specific positions or ranges, so that they can be easily found for the purpose of editing etc. at a later point in time. Position markers (red triangles) and range markers (blue triangles) can be inserted with EditPro. Position Marker Range Markers (marker #) (cue in # and cue out #) Figure 10: Markers All of the markers within a given file are entered to a marker list in the order in which they were set. The marker list appears in the upper portion of the main window: Figure 11: Marker List Position markers are identified in the list with the designation Marker, followed by a consecutive number. Range markers (GLW3URYHUVLRQUHYLVLRQOHYHO 21

22 (GLWLQJ$XGLR)LOHV are identified with the designations Cue in and Cue out, and a single consecutive number is assigned to each pair (see figure 10). These number are assigned one time only and do not change, even if a marker with a lower number is deleted. $VVLJQLQJ1DPHVWR0DUNHUV Markers can be renamed, and user-selected names and number can be assigned to markers as well. However, any given marker name may only be assigned to a single marker.,qvhuwlqj0dunhuv Markers can be inserted to an audio file regardless of whether or not it is currently being played back. Inserting Markers during Playback In order to insert a marker at the current playback line position during playback, first select the desired type of marker by clicking one of the following buttons: Figure 12: Marker Buttons (markerbar) In order to set the marker click the button at the appropriate moment. The marker then appears underneath the playback line. Inserting Markers without Playback In order to insert a marker manually at a specific position, first select the desired type of marker by clicking the appropriate button (see figure 12). Then click with the mouse pointer at the position within the white marker bar to which the marker is to be inserted. The marker is inserted and appears in the marker list. A consecutive number is assigned automatically. 22 0$<$+&RPPXQLFDWLRQV*PE+

23 :RUNLQJZLWK0DUNHUV Several markers of the same type can be inserted as well, one after the other. If multiple range markers are inserted one after the other, the program automatically switches back and forth between cue in and cue out markers. 'HOHWLQJ0DUNHUV In order to delete a marker, press and hold the left mouse key with the mouse pointer positioned at the desired marker. Drag the marker downwards and then release the key. 6DYLQJ0DUNHUV Markers are lost if the audio file is saved in the standard MP3 format. If markers need to be saved (e.g. for editing at a later point in time), the file must be saved in RIFF format. Select the following menu function to this end: File Save as... Enter riff bitstream as the file type in the dialog box. The markers remain intact with this data format. The file s audio characteristics are not affected by this data format. )LQGLQJ([LVWLQJ0DUNHUV In order to find existing markers, and thus the corresponding section within a file, click the button in the marker list and press the n or the pkey. The corresponding file section appears automatically at the file display window, and the playback line jumps to the appropriate position. (GLW3URYHUVLRQUHYLVLRQOHYHO 23

25 7URXEOHVKRRWLQJ No audiostream playback I If an audiostream cannot be played back, it may be that the installed sound card does not support the utilized sample rate. Remedy: Install a virtual sample rate converter. Download Virtual Audio Cable, version 2.0, from the Internet and install the program to your PC. Virtual Audio Cable, version 2.0, is available from the following website: No audiostream playback II This problem may also be caused by an incorrect data file designation or an incorrect data format. It may be that a given file name ends with *.mp2 or *.mp3, even though it does not makes use of the respective format. Check the origin of files which cannot be played back. 27 8QLQVWDOOLQJWKH3URJUDP In order to uninstall the program perform the following steps: Start the Windows control panel. Double click the Software icon. Select EditPro and click Add/Remove.
