Introduction Dear Customer Thank you for choosing the Neurotech Recovery - Back. This product was developed by Neurotech to provide a uniquely, convenient way to help manage pain, prevent muscle wastage and aid in muscle rehabilitation. Neurotech Recovery - Back is designed to deliver Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation (TENS) for pain management or Neuromuscular Electrical Stimulation (NMES) for muscle rehabilitation. Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation (TENS): TENS is a clinically proven, safe and effective method of providing pain relief. INTRODUCTION & CONTACT DETAILS Neuromuscular Electrical Stimulation (NMES): When muscles are not used, they weaken. Weakened muscles can make it difficult to move around and patients can experience difficulty performing certain tasks or worsen the risk of injury. Strengthening these muscles is an important step in a patient s rehabilitation. The following provides instructions for use of both the conductive garments and the controller. Please ensure that you read all of the instructions carefully before using Neurotech Recovery - Back. Compliance with this legislation rests with the importer, dealer or user of the equipment, as appropriate. SAFETY INFORMATION Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation (TENS) TENS is a pain therapy based on the stimulation of the nerve fibres, via the application of electrical stimuli to the skin. There are two methods: the pain gate theory, which blocks the pain signals to the brain and through the increased release of endorphins, which inhibits the emergence of pain. Neuromuscular Electrical Stimulation (NMES) NMES may be defined as the application of electrical stimulation to the peripheral nervous system to contract a muscle, either through the direct activation of the motor neurons in the mixed peripheral nerve, or indirectly through reflex recruitment. Indications For Use - Neurotech Recovery - Back The device is intended to deliver therapeutic electrical stimulation to the back and abdominal muscles to: Provide symptomatic relief in the treatment of acute and chronic back pain. Prevent or delay the onset of disuse muscle atrophy. Increase muscle strength of the lumbar and abdominal muscles. Aid rehabilitation in back pain patients. 4

1.1 Contraindications, Warnings and Precautions Contraindications You have an electronic implant (e.g. cardiac pacemaker or defibrillator) or suffer from any other heart problem. You are pregnant. You suffer from cancer, epilepsy or are under medical supervision for cognitive dysfunction. The unit is in close proximity (e.g. 1m) to shortwave or microwave therapy equipment. You are connected to high-frequency surgical equipment. Wearing the device necessitates placement over areas at which drugs/medicines are administered by injection (short term or long term) e.g. hormone treatment. Warnings The long-term effects of chronic electrical stimulation are unknown. Place the electrodes and garments ONLY on the lower back or abdomen, as indicated in this manual. Avoid placing the electrodes or belt on the front or sides of the neck, across or through the heart (i.e. one electrode on the front of the chest and one on the back), in the genital region or on the head. Application of electrodes near the thorax may increase the risk of cardiac fibrillation. Avoid any recent scars, broken or inflamed skin, areas of infection or susceptibility to acne, thrombosis or other vascular problems (e.g. varicose veins), or any parts of the body where feeling is limited. Avoid areas of injury or restricted movement (e.g. fractures or sprains). Avoid placing the electrodes directly over metal implants. For hygiene reasons the electrodes and garments are for use only by one person. Do not share with anyone else. Electrodes should be replaced if they no longer stick to the skin. Do not use the abdominal garment if you are wearing a belly-button ring. Remove the ring before you begin a session. Do not use your unit at the same time as any other device which transfers an electrical current into the body (e.g. another muscle stimulator). Cease using your unit if you are feeling light headed or faint. Consult your clinician if this happens. Do not touch the electrodes or metal studs while the unit is switched on. Do not use while driving, operating machinery or cycling. CONTRAINDICATIONS, WARNINGS AND PRECAUTIONS

CONTRAINDICATIONS, WARNINGS AND PRECAUTIONS Precautions - Please wait before using your product until: At least six weeks after the birth of your baby (you must consult your clinician first). One month after an IUD contraceptive device (e.g. coil) has been fitted. At least three months after having a Caesarean (you must consult your clinician first). The heavy days of your period have finished. To reposition electrodes during a session, always pause the programme currently running, unfasten the belt and then refasten it once the position of the electrodes has been adjusted. Caution should be used in the presence of the following: - When there is a tendency to haemorrhage following acute trauma or fracture; - Following recent surgical procedures when muscle contraction may disrupt the healing process; - Over areas of the skin which lack normal sensation. Powered muscle stimulators and garments should be kept out of the reach of children. Powered muscle stimulators should be used only with the garments and electrodes recommended for use by the manufacturer. Stimulation should not be applied when in the bath or shower. The studs and electrodes must not be connected to other objects. Possible Adverse Reactions A small number of isolated skin reactions have been reported by people using muscle stimulation devices, including allergies, a prolonged reddening of the skin and acne. On very rare occasions, first-time users of NMES have reported feeling light-headed or faint. We recommend that you use the product while seated until you become accustomed to the sensation. Contact the careline if: Your unit is not working correctly. Do not use it in the meantime. You experience any irritation, skin reaction, hypersensitivity or other adverse reaction. You should, however, note that some reddening of the skin can appear under the belt during and for a short time after a session. Note: An effective treatment should not cause undue discomfort. 6

Important: For first time users, muscle stimulation can be an unusual sensation. We recommend that you begin with low stimulation intensities to familiarise yourself with the sensation before progressing to higher stimulation intensities. Do not over exert yourself when using muscle stimulation. Any workout should be at a level comfortable for you. Neurotech will not accept responsibility if the guidelines and instructions supplied with this unit are not followed. Although compliant with applicable EMC requirements, this device may still interfere with more sensitive equipment, please move away or switch off. Neurotech NMES and TENS devices can be used safely and effectively at home without medical supervision. Please read the instructions carefully, in particular the guidance on contra-indications and other precautions. We recommend that you consult a qualified medical professional before first starting a treatment regime with TENS or NMES, to ensure there is nothing about your specific medical condition which would affect safety of use. Similarly, if your health status deteriorates in any way, we recommend you check back with your medical professional to see if it is safe to continue to use TENS or NMES. CONTRAINDICATIONS, WARNINGS AND PRECAUTIONS 7

2.0 Frequently Asked Questions Q: What is Neurotech Recovery - Back? A: The Neurotech Recovery - Back consists of a back garment, an abdominal garment and a controller. It is an innovative, garment-based solution specifically designed to facilitate the frequent and correct positioning and repositioning of multiple electrodes for the treatment of the lower back and abdominal muscles. The Neurotech Plus Controller is a unique, innovative Neuromuscular Electrical Stimulator, which offers both NMES for muscle rehabilitation and TENS stimulation for pain management. Q: What should Neurotech Recovery - Back feel like when operating? A: Using NMES: When you switch the Neurotech Plus controller on and gradually increase the intensity, you will feel a mild, comfortable tingling or buzzing sensation in your muscles. As you increase the intensity, the muscles will begin to contract. Using TENS: When you switch the Neurotech Plus controller on and gradually increase the intensity, you will feel a mild, comfortable tingling or tapping sensation in your muscles. There will be no muscle contraction when using TENS. FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS 8 Q: How often should I use Neurotech Recovery Back garments? A: Your prescribing physician will advise you on the duration of your treatment program. Q: What should I do if treatment becomes uncomfortable? A: Effective treatment should not cause undue discomfort. If treatment becomes painful, try lowering the intensity level slightly, then gradually build back up to the previous level. If discomfort persists, Neurotech recommends that you contact a member of the Neurotech team or your clinician who will advise you on usage of Neurotech Recovery-Back to minimize discomfort. Q: How often should I replace the electrodes? A: With time the electrodes pick up skin debris and may need to be replaced as this makes the treatment less effective and less comfortable. If you notice the signal is weakening, even if the batteries are OK, this usually indicates that the electrodes are wearing and will soon need replacing. New electrodes can be ordered from Neurotech or your local distributor. Q: Can Neurotech Recovery - Back be used in conjunction with other forms of therapy? A: Neurotech Recovery - Back can be used as an adjunct to most forms of therapy for lower back injuries. See page for Contraindications (situations when Neurotech Recovery - Back should not be used). Q: Can I use the Abdominal Garment for post natal exercises? A: Yes, but you must wait a minimum of 6 weeks after childbirth before you begin using and you must consult your clinician first. If you ve had a caesarean in the past 3 months, consult your clinician for approval before using the garment. Q: Can Back Garments be used on other body parts? A: No. The garments should only be used as directed in this manual and not applied to any other body parts.

Q: How should I care for my Neurotech Recovery - Back? A: See page 22 for full instructions on caring for your Neurotech Recovery - Back. Q: Who should I contact if I have additional queries? A: Contact your prescribing clinician, the distributor who provided you with the Neurotech Recovery - Back or your Neurotech team if you have any questions regarding usage of Neurotech Recovery - Back. Q: What should I do if I experience an adverse reaction? A: If any irritation, skin reaction, hypersensitivity or other adverse reaction is experienced, discontinue use and contact your prescribing clinician, the distributor who provided you with the product or your Neurotech team. A slight reddening of the skin is normal under the electrodes during and for a short time after treatment. This should disappear within approximately 30 minutes. If the redness is excessive, you may have the intensity too high. This may increase the reddening in sensitive skin. Try using a lower intensity for a few days. If the problem persists, you should stop using the unit. Q: The stimulation is uncomfortable. How can I improve this? A: Make sure the electrodes are positioned correctly and that they are pressed firmly against your skin. Switch off your unit and reposition the belt if necessary. Ensure the metal studs are fully covered by the electrodes. Ensure the electrodes don t need to be changed. Q: I can feel a tingling sensation in my legs when using the abdominal garment. What should I do? A: This indicates that the electrodes are over your hip-bones. Moving the two smaller electrodes upwards and inwards on your waist (i.e. towards the centre of your body) should prevent this. Remember to pause or switch off your unit before adjusting the belt or electrodes. Q: I can feel my waist muscles exercising but not my stomach muscles when using the abdominal garment. A: Pause the programme and reposition the central electrode slightly lower on your stomach. If this doesn t help, move the 2 small electrodes to a smaller figure setting on the belt (towards the central electrode). Q: I can feel my stomach muscles exercising but not my waist muscles when using the abdominal garment. A: Pause the programme and reposition the central electrodes slightly higher on your stomach. If this doesn t help, move the 2 smaller electrodes to a larger figure setting on the belt (away from the central electrode). FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS 9

.0 Using the Neurotech Plus Controller Fig. a USING THE NEUROTECH PLUS CONTROLLER Step 1: Connect the controller to the charger (Fig. a) and plug the charger into an electrical socket. You will know the battery pack is charging when the unit display shows a battery symbol with 3 bars that turn on and off. It will take approximately 2-3 hours to fully charge. The controller is fully charged when the battery symbol and its 3 bars remain on. To remove the controller from the charger, press the buttons on each side of the unit connector and pull apart. Notes: Do not leave your controller connected to the charger when the battery is fully charged. Do not leave your charger plugged into an electrical outlet when not in use. Step 2: Ensure that the controller is switched off and connect it to the garment, by plugging it into the garment socket (Fig. b). The controller and conductive garment must be correctly connected for the garment to work - this is a safety feature. Step 3: Switch on the controller by pressing the On/Off ( ) button for 2 seconds (Fig. c). When the screen changes to the timer, press the 2 down intensity buttons ( ) to verify your controller is connected to the correct garment type. This is indicated by the U-number which appears on screen for 3 seconds (see page 29 for garment types). Step 4: Select your desired program by pressing the program button (P - Fig. d) until your program number appears on the display. Then start the treatment by increasing the intensity (Fig. e). Step : As you increase the left or right intensity buttons (Fig. e) you will feel the stimulation increasing on the corresponding side of the garment. You will also see the intensity level for that side increasing on the controller s display. Increase the intensity on both sides until you feel a firm, comfortable contraction. This will vary from person to person. If you are using a TENS program, increase intensity to a comfortable level, but not one that will cause a muscle contraction. The intensity level ranges from 0-99. Step 6: Continue increasing the intensity throughout the session if possible. For NMES programs, you will feel the muscle contractions getting stronger as the intensity increases. Always reduce the intensity if you feel any discomfort. You can utilise the intensity lock function when you find a comfortable level of stimulation. Fig. b Fig. c Fig. d Fig. e 18

Pausing a session If you wish to pause a session before it is finished, simply press the on/off button briefly (Fig. f). The display will show that the unit is paused ( ). To resume the session, briefly press the on/off button again. The display will return to its normal mode. Step 6: On NMES programs the treatment session is completed when the counter reaches zero. The controller will also beep to indicate the end of the session. Switch the controller off by pressing the On/ Off button for 2 seconds ( ). Should you forget to do this, the controller will switch off automatically after 20 seconds anyway. Fig. f Fig. g Step 7: Disconnect the controller from the garment by pressing the buttons on either side of the connector and pulling the two sections apart (Fig. g). Remove the garment by carefully peeling the garment off your back or abdomen. Ensure that the electrodes remain attached to the garment. Then place the garment on a flat surface with the electrodes facing you and replace the liners on the black side of each one. If the electrodes have lifted slightly, press the edges back onto the garment. Fold the garment, ensuring that the electrodes remain flat and store the garment, with the electrodes still attached, on a flat surface in a cool dry place. USING THE NEUROTECH PLUS CONTROLLER 19
