Et hus til latter og eftertanke Det er os en stor glæde at kunne indbyde til Skt. Nikolajs 60 års jubilæum for indvielsen af den eksisterende kirkebygning. Gennem 60 år har huset på fornem vis opfyldt behovet for en kirke og et socialt samlingssted for både de søfarende og den fastboende danske - ja skandinaviske - menighed i Yorkshire og Lincolnshire. Skt. Nikolaj har dannet ramme om kulturelle og sociale arrangementer lige fra det store årlige julemarked og til fester i anledning af fastelavn, Skt. Hans, nytår og juleaften, til muntre timer med Quiz, film, bøger, debat og meget mere. Utallige kopper kaffe er drukket og smørrebrød spist og kransekager bagt. Mangen en vigtig samtale er blevet ført, og ofte er søfolk kommet på besøg for at slappe af en stund væk fra skibet. I kirkens bil er sømandspræsten kørt på skibsbesøg i det store Humberområde. I Skt. Nikolaj har barneskrål lydt ved dåb, og danske salmer er blevet sunget. Her har sørgetoner lydt ved afsked med en kær. Og Gudsordet er blevet forkyndt på vort modersmål, det sprog, som HC Andersen så rigtigt kalder for hjertesproget. Nikolaj døde i nat Som mange bekendt blev Skt. Nikolaj jævnet med jorden af tyske bomber den 9. maj 1941, natten før sin 70 års fødselsdag. Formanden for Trusten sendte det gribende budskab Nikolaj døde i nat! hjem til organisationen i Danmark. Hull var ofte bombemål på grund af den store havn midt i byen, hvor der bl.a. lå ammunitionsdepoter til russernes krig på Østfronten. Områderne omkring byens centrum, hvor Skt. Nikolaj lå, blev meget hårdt ramt på grund af den korte afstand til dokkerne. Genopstod i 1954 Det var med glæde og stolthed menigheden i Hull den 9. maj 1954 kunne indvie den nye Skt. Nikolaj Danske Sømandskirke. Københavns biskop H. Fuglsang-Damgaard indviede kirken med royal tilstedeværelse. Alle er indbudt Alle er velkomne til at feste med. Nikolaj has got a new website: www.danishchurchhull.co.uk. A donation from Aarhus Sømandskreds in Denmark has made it possible to buy a new website. Our thanks go to the generous ladies in Aarhus. And also a thanks to Gunnar Jessen for editing the old website. We are hoping that a new website and the use of Facebook etc. will make Skt. Nikolaj better known among the Scandinavians in Yorkshire and Lincolnshire. And that it will be easier for new Danes in this region to get to know about the Church.. Joint AGM The Church Council and the Church Social Fund will hold a joint Annual General Meeting on Sunday 23rd of March at the Danish Seamen s Church The Meetings will take place after the service ( 10.30 am) and lunch. 3
Hello again Since the publication of the last magazine, several events have taken place at Skt. Nikolaj,some quite traumatic. Firstly the Christmas market was held as usual on the last weekend in November and once again was as popular as ever. This year we held only one mini market on Saturday the 7th December, unfortunately attendance at this event suffered from the weather conditions, and the public being advised not to venture into Hull city centre due to possible flooding. I am able to report that even with the low attendance at the mini market the Christmas market in general was a great success. Flooding On the evening of Thursday the 5th December the Humber region suffered high winds and a spring tide, this combination resulting in the river Humber breaching its banks and flooding Hull city centre, and various communities along both banks of the river. Unfortunately water entered the church and caused some damage to the wooden floors and some of the carpets, happily this did not result in the cancelation of any services or other functions that had been previously arranged. The worst flooded areas were the Pastors residence, and the residence of our tenants,kurt and Angie. The damage caused by the water to those two properties is extensive and has resulted in both Torben and Kurt and Angie having to move to temporary accommodation until the two properties are habitable. As I write this report all three properties Richard Watson showing how high the water from the River Humber did rise have been deemed dry enough for work to begin on the damaged areas. Priority will be given to Torbens home, hopefully Torben will be able to move back in late March, it is hoped that the property rented by Kurt and Angie will be available by the end of May. A decision has yet to be made regarding when the remedial work to the church s wooden floors will commence as this will mean closing the church for approximately 10 days. On Sunday the 23rd March the Annual General Meeting will be held after the regular service, once again this will be a joint meeting together with the social committee. Elections for both committees will be held on the day. Skt. Nikolaj will be hosting a function to celebrate the 60th anniversary of the opening of the present building on Sunday the 11th May and I hope to meet many of you there. Church Social Fund By Dorthe Hostick, chairman The first event of the year to be hosted by the Social Fund was the Quiz Night on the 7 th February. Around 40 guests took part in the quiz and there was a very competitive mood among the teams. As usual the main aim was not necessarily to win the prize, but to WIN! No, honestly, it was all for fun, and the evening was finished off with coffee and cake. Thank you to everybody who came along and supported this event. Sunday the 2 nd March was Fastelavn. Altogether around 15 children took part in beating the cat out of the barrel after which adults and children enjoyed a traditional lunch of frikadeller, potato salad and sausages. Walk in North Lincolnshire Sunday 6 th April. Our next event will not be held at the Church, but in the countryside in North Lincolnshire. It is a couple of miles walk along the shore of the Humber that will finish at the Water s Edge Visitor Centre in Barton where we can enjoy a lunch together. Anyone wishing to visit the Ropewalk can fit that in at the same time. The walk is not very strenuous or long, so it is suitable for most. We will all meet at The Water s Edge Visitor Centre in Barton (follow the brown road signs) at 10.30 Sunday the 6 th April. Please let the Church know by Friday 5 th April if you are taking part. AGM. Sunday 23 rd March. We hope to see as many members as possible for our Annual General Meeting. Sunday 11 th May. Celebration of the 60 th Birthday of Skt. Nikolaj. See the information elsewhere in this magazine. We hope you can join us! Skt. Hans Midsummer. Saturday 21 st June. 6pm. For the first time in many years, we will hold our Midsummer celebrations in the Church Garden. By then the garden will have been completely transformed and we hope as many adults and children as possible will be able to join us for a bonfire and barbecue, it is always a fun night. The Trustees The Trustees at the Church. Elisabeth Knowles was absent. At the Danish Seamen s Church we have the Trustee, and so it has been since 1962. Why a Trustee and what are the trustees duty? and registered as a Charity in 1962. Mr Kai Holger Wolff bequeathed his house, land and content to The Danish Church in 1960. The house and content were sold and the proceeds invested. These investments formed the basis for setting up a body of trustees as administrators. The Charity Commission states that the body of Trustees shall consist of seven competent persons -- Four Ex-official Trustees The Danish Consul for Kingston upon Hull The Swedish Vice-consul for Kingston upon Hull The Norwegian Consul for Kingston upon Hull, and The Pastor of the Danish Lutheran Church of St. Nicolai in Hull Managing director Peter Aarosin is a member of the Trustee. We have asked him why : -The reason why I am trustee in the Church is because that I want to play my little part in helping to promote Denmark in England, to help the Church and its congregation to continue to have close links to the local Humber community and to help to make sure that the Church will continue to bond with the Sea and the Scandinavian seamen whilst in the Humber Ports. Hanne Hamilton will in the following describe, what the Trustee is doing, when it began working for Sct. Nicolai and why she had been a member since. What is the Trust? The Danish Lutheran Church of St Nicolai in Hull known typically as The Trust (Trusten) was approved by The Charity Commission 7 Three Co-optative Trustees Three Co-optative Trustees shall be persons who are members of the Danish, Swedish or Norwegian Churches and who are residing or carrying on business in or near the City of Kingston upon Hull. The full wording of the Charity Commission Document is available on request from the Danish Church. The present Chairman of the Trust is Mr Terry McCollin. Today the Trustees continue to administer this legacy as set out by The Charity Commission. The Charity Commission states the Trustees shall apply the income in maintaining, repairing and equipping the said building,
and in maintaining the services in the said church Since the establishment of a Church Council, a Registered Charity, in 2007 namely Nikolaj Danish Seamen s Church in Hull, the two charities have a close working relationship with the common aim to ensure that the Church shall continue to enjoy a sound financial basis on which not only the Scandinavian Seafarer but also all Scandinavians residing in the area will benefit by having a meeting place for Christian Worship according to the doctrine and rituals of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Denmark and also to enjoy the common Fellowship. Why I am a Trustee? I was elected as a Co-optative Trustee in 1998 and I continue to be a trustee. Why a Trustee? Before we had a Church Council the Trust was the only official and legal body which could make representation to the Danish Seamen s Church Board in Copenhagen both with regard to financial matters and appointments to the Church. It is still important for me to play a small part in the process regarding the aims of the charity. Skt Nikolaj Danish Church has been an important part of my life for the last 45 years. My children were confirmed there and my grandchildren are baptised there. My husbands funeral was also held there. When I talk of Fellowship, I can think of the many times we host the celebrations of the Scandinavian traditional Feast days, Birthdays, Welcome and Farewell parties, the Saturday Lunches and the Christmas Market. We try to maintain most of the Scandinavian Traditions but are aware that we must also encourage new input and ideas. It is wonderful when new people come through the doors and see them come again and again -- long may it continue. That is another reason why I became a member of the Trust so many years ago. Continued from inside front cover... Danish Vessels calling at one of the ports in the Humber Region and all Danes at that all Scandinavians living in Yorkshire and Lincolnshire. Skt. Nikolaj has been, and still is, a centre for cultural and social gatherings. We are kept very Busy at the Scandinavian Christmas Market, and can relax more when we come together for celebrations such as Midsummer, New Year, Christmas Eve and also when we get together to watch the latest Scandinavian films or debate recent books etc. During our opening hours, many people have dropped in over the years for a coffee and freshly baked cake and a conversation. Very often seafarers from Danish vessels have visited the Church in order to get away from their vessel for a while, or the Danish port chaplain has visited the Danish vessels all over the Humber Area when the seamen haven t been able to come to the Church. In this building the cry of a child has often been heard at baptism, and Danish hymns have been sung for almost 150 years. In this building words of sorrow have been heard and sung when people said their last goodbye to members of their family or a good friend. Words from God have been preached in the Danish language, for it is important, as the storyteller, Hans Christian Andersen says, 8
because the native language comes from the heart. Skt Nikolaj died tonight As many of you will know, the original Skt. Nikolaj was destroyed on the 9th of May 1941 by German bombs. It was the night before the 70th anniversary of the Church. The Chairman of the Trust send this message to the organisation in Denmark: Skt. Nikolaj died tonight. Rebuild So it was with great pride that the community could consecrate a new Church building on the 9th of May 1954. Welcome Everyone is welcome to join in celebrating the Anniversary. The Church Council has decided that it will be free of charge to participate. We do, however, appeal for donations. Please let the Church know before the 3rd of April if you wish to attend.
