Jesper Bruun rasmussen

Pictorial quality and uncompromising design This autumn, the modern department at Bruun rasmussen presents three catalogues. in addition to this main catalogue, there are two catalogues: one which focuses on ove Højgaard andersen s unique art collection, and the other on 60 exquisite pieces of furniture by the architect Finn Juhl, celebrating his 100th birthday. This catalogue introduces an impressive collection of CoBra works, including 14 pictures by asger Jorn. leading the way, is le sorcier, ii (a male witch) whose title, as well as the figure depicted, hints at the performance of the poem le Streghe (the witches) in the italian town of albisola, during which Jorn and fellow artists dressed up and participated. The painting was created in 1957 a time of unrest and upheaval when Jorn leans towards ceramic expression. The glazed surface of the painting is a clear reminder of his major work from that period the ceramic relief made for aarhus Katedralskole (lot 619). Modern art has many faces, and Kurt Trampedach s three self-portraits unify his recurring, existential motifs and versatile imagery (lot 638, 646 and 655). portraiture is also andy warhol s preferred genre, and here we have two fine examples. rock n roll fans will have the opportunity to leave the auction accompanied by the legendary rolling Stones front man, Mick Jagger (lot 893). or for the rest, how about warhol s paraphrase of Botticelli s famous and beloved renaissance picture Birth of venus which hangs in the uffizi gallery in Florence (lot 894)? Cubism, expressionism, and futurism are joined in a single painting in gasværkshavnen, from 1918-20. The man behind the painting is anton Hansen, who was working at the periphery of the Danish artistic scene during the inter-war period. The strong imagery and social indignation depicted in the picture make it an important contribution to the art of the period (lot 606). The second part of this catalogue contains silver, arts and craft, and Danish furniture classics. one of the highlights is the architectonic, oversized silver cocktail set with accompanying tray. The set was designed by the functionalistic architect Kay Fisker and produced by a. Michelsen (lot 940). Hans J. wegner has been in high demand in recent years. Several of his pieces of furniture have left indelible traces on international design history. we are offering a number of his most rare models, designed in the first half of the 1950 s, and made by wegner s regular collaborator, cabinetmaker Johannes Hansen (lot 1132, 1134, 135 and 1168). we are also moving further back in furniture history with a wide variety of designs from the 1930 s and 1940 s by modernist architects of that time such as Flemming and Mogens lassen. an example is a fine egyptian Table by Mogens lassen, which was made to order for the popular illustrator Christel Marott, who for five decades illustrated magazines and books for young girls in her characteristic style (lot 1152). welcome to the autumn auction in Bredgade! Provenance: Carl Clausen's collection, his auction at Odd Fellow Palæet, Copenhagen, October 1930, cat. no. 38. DKK 75,000-100,000 / 10,000-13,500 The work Gasværkshavnen (The Gas Works Harbour) is one of the few known examples of Anton Hansen s painterly contribution to early Danish modernism. Hansen was on the periphery of the modernist art scene, which was particularly dynamic and experimental in and around 1918. He exhibited at the Artists Autumn Exhibition (KE) in 1918, at which Vilhelm Lundstrøm s Pakkassebilleder (packing box pictures) derived success from scandal, and knew artists such as Olaf Rude, Jais Nielsen and William Scharff, whose cubist experiments he admired. A painting such as Gasværkshavnen stands out from the work of his peers, primarily through its social indignation, but Hansen seemed to have neither the urge nor the encouragement to continue along the path of painting. Of Anton Hansen s works in relation to the other modernists at the Artists Autumn Exhibition in 1918, Mikael Wivel writes: (...) The style may have been related, but it had far more substance. The figuration was naive, the simplification cubist and the dynamics expressionist - not to mention futuristic. In this respect, a painting such as Havnen (the work up for auction here) is extremely characteristic of his efforts (...). It is dynamically constructed as a sort of painted collage that gradually comes together to tell the story of the toil underlying the energy which ensures that the wheels can rotate and the sparks fly. Hansen gets right down to the basic forces in society, and he displays them with both humour and passion, but also with a certain expressive naivety verging on Robert Storm Petersens. 18 BRUUN RASMUSSEN BREDGADE AUCTION 831

Not previously offered for sale. Just as Asger Jorn, Swedish artist Nils Adolf Wedel (1897-1967) was early in his career oriented towards Modernism within French art. From 1921-22 he studied under Othon Friesz at Académie Moderne in Paris, a period in which he met Fernand Léger. The encounter with the marked simplicity of Léger's art became a turning point in the development of Wedel's own idiom and he later described his introduction to Cubism as the most seminal experience in his life. 22 BRUUN RASMUSSEN BREDGADE AUCTION 831

610 Years later, 17-year-old Asger Jorn followed in the same track when in 1936 he travelled to Paris where he defined the future of his artistic career as a student at Léger's Académie Contemporaine. Jorn and Wedel's road crossed in Copenhagen when in November 1945 Jorn was planning an exhibition of Danish art in Sweden and Niels Wedel exhibited at the autumn exhibition Høstudstillingen. In the summer of 1946, Jorn travelled to Sweden and visited, among others, Niels Wedel in Orust north of Gothenburg on his way to Saxnäs in Lapland. The three paintings currently on auction all originate from Niels Wedel's collection and presumably came into his possession during their joint preparations for exhibitions or in connection with Jorn's trips to Sweden and his stays there in 1945-46. Exhibited: Kunstforeningen, Copenhagen 1971, cat. no. 32. Provenance: Galerie H. le Gendre, Paris. The period from the mid-1950s to around 1962 is Corneille's most lyrical and painterly phase, in contrast to the early CoBrA years, and the works of later years in which the figuration takes centre stage. The motifs often revolve around the sun, but not in a traditional landscape structure with a foreground, horizon and sky. During this period, Corneille worked by painting from all four corners of a level canvas, making for an almost landscapelike vue from a distant, fictional perspective. 619 CD ASGER JORN b. Vejrum 1914, d. Århus 1973 "Le sorcier, II", 1957. Signed Jorn. Oil on canvas. 104 x 71 cm. Literature: Guy Atkins: "Asger Jorn. The crucial years: 1954-1964", no. 1062, ill. p. 328. Exhibited: Kunsthalle, Basel. Exhibited: "Sommerudstilling", Galerie Moderne, Silkeborg, Denmark, 1983, ill. in colours in the exhibition catalogue. Provenance: Galerie Krugier, Geneve (label on the reverse). "Le sorcier, II" was painted in the period between Jorn's establishment in Paris and Albisola in 1954-55, and his return home as a celebrated artist with his monumental relief for Aarhus Katedralskole in 1959. The title may relate to an event in the Italian potters' colony Albisola, where Jorn and a group of other artists took part in a dramatic performance of the poem "Le Streghe" (the witches) in 1955. A procession of costumed characters - masked witches - danced through the town to the accompaniment of music, culminating in a moonlit witch burning on the beach. In terms of its composition and materials, the connection to Albisola - and the main work, the large-scale ceramic relief in Aarhus - is also very much in evidence. During this period, the interplay between Jorn's ceramic expression and his painting becomes generally more pronounced. He experiments by mixing foreign elements, such as sand, in the colour. "Le sorcier, II" predominantly consists of pure oil colour, but the expression nevertheless has something murallike about it, as the figures and colours sparkle like glazes on a raw, textural background. In the mid-1950s, Jorn spoke of French artist Jean Dubuffet as the most important painter of the day and, in 1955, they took part in the same exhibition at Galerie Rive Gauche in Paris. Particularly in the 50s, Dubuffet epitomised the cultivation of the painting's subject and surface - often in strong, frontal figure paintings. An approach reflected to a certain extent in this work by Jorn. DKK 1,200,000 / 160,000 32 BRUUN RASMUSSEN BREDGADE AUCTION 831

Literature: Guy Atkins: "Asger Jorn. The crucial years 1954-1964", Copenhagen 1977, no. 1255 (dated here 1960). Exhibited: "Asger Jorn-Retrospective exhibition", Kestner-Gesellschaft, Hannover 1973, cat. no. 44, ill. full page in colours p. 85. Provenance: Lefebre Gallery, New York. Lars Morell writes about the painting: "'Child's Play' was undoubtedly inspired by children's drawings, but has been executed with the sublime mastery of the tools by the born artist. Jorn's brush moves up and down, to and from or round and round. First one way and then the other. There's nothing he can't do, and he's willing to do it all. 'Child's Play' has not been painted with an impressionist ductus, nor an expressionist one, and you could hardly call it informal. All manner of brush strokes have been given free rein. The nonchalant use of the painting materials - the earthy colours and the spectral colours mixed together - shows just what an unsurpassed painter Jorn was - and that we actually have yet to discover it. As always with Jorn, the title is meant ironically, and 'Child's Play' is anything but child's play. In the 1950s, Jorn's pictures were often based on his chaotic family life, and the sparks are flying between the smiling blue woman at the bottom and the energetic yellow figure at the top with the drawn half-moon above it - probably a self-portrait. Asger Jorn was a whirlwind". DKK 1,200,000-1,500,000 / 160,000-200,000 46 BRUUN RASMUSSEN BREDGADE AUCTION 831

Motif-wise and by virtue of its format, the work up for auction is closely related to the artist's series of 'Nature Morte' paintings from 1987-88. In Kirkeby's work, 'Nature Morte' is never merely a trivial genre designation, but rather a very specific prediction. With Kirkeby, nature is anything but frozen stagnation; it is something in progress, transformation and degradation. Neither is Kirkeby's painting a cursory look at the landscape, but rather a deep archaeological dig beneath the surface. Kirkeby finds the term 'colourism' highly problematical and superficial in relation to his art, yet colour is a key focal point in his work: "(...) The colour means something, more than decoration. The colour says something, has a content of a kind that is difficult to pin down, and that, of course, is precisely the point of doing a painting". 638 CD KURT TRAMPEDACH b. Hillerød 1943 "Jeg gik mig over sø og land" (I travelled over Land and Sea), c. 1984. Signed Trampedach, Pays Basque. Executed at Broome Street, New York. Oil on canvas. 296 x 248 cm. Provenance: Acquired directly from the artist by the present owner. Not previously offered for sale. Monumental paintings from Kurt Trampedach's New Yorker years are something of a rarity on the Danish art market, as the majority of these works were exhibited and sold through Allan Stone Gallery in New York. "Jeg gik mig over sø og land" (I travelled over sea and land) refers quite literally to the shift in Kurt Trampedach's life and art which occurred around the time of his move to the French Basque Country in 1980, and as a result of the even greater distance he placed between himself and Denmark when he left for New York in 1983. His paintings of that period - this one included - mark a new start in Trampedach's career - mentally, motif-wise and in terms of his use of colour, which now becomes intense and glowing. The work up for auction offers a double vision, with a physical effect on the beholder due to its sizable dimensions. In the depth (and looked at from a distance) is a retrospective, thoughtful character, who insistently seeks the beholder's gaze over his shoulder. In the foreground (seen close up) figure and architecture studies as well as texts with reference to the artist's new surroundings and world of motifs in the Basque Country appear: the house in Sare (Sara), the mountain La Rhune (Larrun), New [York], animals and people. An immensely personal account of his travels through time and continents. DKK 400,000 / 54,000 52 BRUUN RASMUSSEN BREDGADE AUCTION 831

Literature: Mikael Wivel: "Kurt Trampedach", Copenhagen 2001, fig. 81, ill. in colours on double page. Sold at the request of SKAT (Tax, customs and duties in Denmark). "Selvportræt, siddende" (self-portrait, seated) from 1975 is a monumental masterpiece from the first part of Kurt Trampedach's career. The work is a continuation of his figure paintings and self-portraits on a dark background from the early 70s, and yet it points towards the more open, picturesque and textural possibilities in his later production. The painting balances between - and elegantly unites - classic, illusionistic figure painting with non-figurative, surface-oriented abstraction. On the right, the artist emerges from the darkness, his cigarette glowing, in spatial chiaroscuro from a surface that otherwise resembles an expressionist painting. The surface of the painting contains rudimentary paintings, drawings and scribblings - the beginnings of something that is then left unfinished or something he regretted. An attempt has even been made to obscure with green the artist's yellow signature, apparently slapdashedly placed like a 'tag' on a wall on the left. The work seems to portray the artist's (and the beholder's) realm of opportunities and the existential, human uncertainty that comes with having a choice. a n art collection ove højgaard andersen International auction 831

O ve H øjgaar D A n D ersen an art collection Danish artists to whom he threw his house open and gave financial support. Ove Højgaard Andersen became an institution within the world of art, and he was nicknamed Uncle Ove because of his role as friend and patron. During the 70 s and 80 s he was a regular guest both at Kunsthallen and here with us at Bruun rasmussen. Together with a group of personalities from the Danish art circles, Ove Højgaard Andersen always contributed to the festive atmosphere, when the hammer was swung in the auction hall. It was during these years that he acquired a large part of the works of art for his collection. Viggo Rivad Concrete art and vivid colours are the keywords of Ove Højgaard Andersen s (1929-2007) spectacular collection of paintings and sculptures, which we are very pleased to put up for sale at our autumn auction in Bredgade. Ove Højgaard Andersen was a merchant, and for many years he ran the company Automagneto in Copenhagen s meet packing district, selling Bosch power drills and other tools. During the 1960 s he develo-ped an interest in modern art, and with great insight, quality consciousness and his finger on the pulse, he created an intense and highly ambitious collectorship. His love for art was far reaching. Ove Højgaard Andersen was a fiery soul with a heart-felt wish to contribute to the development of art. He formed personal relationships with a large number of What strikes you in Ove Højgaard Andersen s collection is an aura of completeness. His love for simplicity was primarily satisfied by concrete art, which is characterized by a geometric idiom totally free from references to outside reality. The core of the collection is comprised by names from the progressive milieu around the galerie Denise rené in Paris among whom can be mentioned Alberto Magnelli, jean Deyrolle, jean Dewasne, victor vasarely, and not to be forgotten: the two Danish pioneers richard Mortensen and robert jacobsen, who both gave their original contributions to european concretism. Ove Højgaard Andersen was, however, not a man of limitations, and the collection also contains works of art by the more expressive CoBrA movement, spearheaded by Asger jorn and Karel Appel. In addition hereto, there are fine detours into classic Danish modernism, represented by two still-lifes and a portrait by vilhelm Lundstrøm. True to the spirit of this colourful collector, his works are now put up for auction. The present catalogue of the Ove Højgaard Andersen collection presents the first nearly 100 works of art, and the rest of the collection will be sold on a current basis during this autumn s online auctions. enjoy! niels raben 6 BrUUn rasmussen BreDgADe AUCTIOn 831 - Ove HøjgAArD AnDersen - An ArT COLLeCTIOn

665 CD a lberto Magnelli b. Florence 1888, d. Meudon, France 1971 "rivalités", Paris. signed Magnelli 53; signed, titled and dated on the reverse. Oil on canvas. 73 x 60 cm. Exhibited: "Euro-Kunst II", On Tour exhibition, Denmark, 1954, cat. no. 142. Exhibited: "Efterårsudstillingen", Charlottenborg, Copenhagen 1956. Exhibited: "Fremmed Kunst i Dansk Eje", Louisiana Museum for Modern Art, Humlebæk, Denmark, 1964, cat. no. 340. In the interbellum, Alberto Magnelli was Italy's most important abstract painter. And it was as one of the pioneers of geometric abstraction that he, alongside the likes of Arp and Kandinsky, exhibited at Linien II's important exhibition in Copenhagen (Linien II was a group formed by young Danish geometric abstract artists). This was not the only time he exhibited his work here and, among other things, he had a close friendship with our very own Robert Jacobsen. Some of Magnelli's pictures are reminiscent of simplified still lifes of rocks, but leading up to the Second World War, his mode of expression was completely cleansed of anything recognisable. A certain manly robustness characterises his nonfigurative compositions, and he was particularly adept at using coloured contour lines to great effect. 673 CD o lle b ærtling b. Halmstad 1911, d. 1981 "IrUA". signed on the reverse Bærtling 1958. Oil on canvas. 92 x 180 cm. Unframed. The 1950s were the most important and defining decade in Olle Bærtling's art. Leaving figurative painting behind him in 1949, he moved towards his signature expression and most important theme - "the open form". The group of works started in 1955 was also known as "Les triangles asymétriques", as vertical and horizontal black diagonals were pulled and stretched out on the elongated, often oversize canvases. In them, clean-lined, incomplete triangles are defined in clear, unbroken surfaces of colour. The work up for auction, "Irua", from 1958 is, in all respects, an exemplary work of the period. Bærtling was one of a kind in Swedish art, who made headway far beyond Sweden's borders during his lifetime. In the early 1950s, he was part of the art scene centred around Galerie Denise René in Paris, whose name has become synonymous with the leading artists within the period's new non-figurative art. Like most of the other artists who were part of the scene, including Danish artists Richard Mortensen and Robert Jacobsen, Bærtling moved away from all illusionism and reference to the external world. The consequence and cultivation of the expression have since meant that parallels have been drawn between Bærtling's art and the American hard-edge tradition and minimalism of the 1960s.
