Acceptance of these Minutes moved: Ulla Turner Seconded: Eric Andersen Agreed BUSINESS ARISING FROM MINUTES: Ulla raised the problem re our insurance. There has been a problem in renewing our insurance. Elna spoke to her broker, and says he can see no problem with Zurich for insurance. Ulla had been told by our broker that a subsidiary of Zurich had refused to renew ours, and he had been unable to find others. Current insurance expires 1 December. Ulla has been told that the liquor licence is the problem it increases the risk of liability. Norwegian Club had to pay $3000+ for an interim cover. Our broker said he could get bridging cover. It was queried, but Ulla didn t know, whether that would be at the previous rate or some new rate. Discussion re what to do if cost should be very high. Maximum we could afford would be about $4000. If we can only get insurance at a higher price, perhaps we should call a general meeting to discuss this. Elna will contact her broker if a reasonable policy can be got, we will take that. CORRESPONDENCE: BCC Invitation to a Fundraising, Grant applications Workshop 29/30 Nov. BCC re Leasing arrangements for Community Buildings need a Sub-Committee to consider future plans? ( have an Extraordinary General Meeting in February? to discuss the future? Maybe a Wednesday evening 12 th February 2003 7.00pm - to discuss the future of the Danish Club Clubhouse Do we close it? Ulla asked that it be allocated to the African Club payment (since the bag of papers was from the African Club, and that their account had been inadvertently written as short by $50). Arild also raised question of the $500 imprest held previously by Mivi, and passed to him. He does not require this would rather get things that have to have cash paid, using his own money, and getting refunded. He has repaid the $500 to the Treasurer, by cheque this evening. NEW MEMBERS: Leon Fiskbeck, Manly West Frank & Inge Hansen, Kingston Jan Pedersen, Nundah Birgitte Jensen & Bjorne Bundgaard, Lawnton Oyvind & Ruth Schougaard, Clear Mountain Moved: Ann de Voss Seconded: Joan Christensen Passed. LAST FUNCTION: Smorbrod Kitchen took $1767, Raffle $124.50. Expenses $1317.15, i.e. music and food (but not overheads) So, about $500 profit, even though only about 60 (paying) came. Bar profit would have been about $550. Arild raised question of Snaps. About 9 bottles used. $1000 banked, $285 left including $200 float. Agreed that we must not sell bottles of snaps, except to drink on the premises. FUTURE CLUB FUNCTIONS: Discussion re soft drinks for the Christmas Bazaar 30 November. Ulla told us it had been widely advertised, and it was hoped there would be a good turn up. Also need bottles of water, and some Poppers of 100% juice etc. Bazaar is 10am to 10pm in effect. Ulla suggested having 2 teams of Committee members to shorten the hours for them. Arild will open up from 10am. Christmas songs on CDs, decorations up, wienbrod and coffee in the morning, hot dogs lunch, abelskiver for afternoon, then medister polser, rodkol, brun kartoffler, rygbrod, sauce etc. for the evening ($5). Folk dancers will entertain at 7pm and invite public to join in dancing. Kurt Christensen s band will play in the evening. Baker there from 11am until sold out. Stalls from 10am until they re tired of it. Fleming the butcher has left Heinz and won t be coming any more. Saturday, 14 December, Christmas Tree. Erik had investigated parks for possibility of Fastelavn Saturday 15 February. The cost of holding it in a park appears prohibitive there is cost for 2 hours or 4 hours, cost for taking cars in, etc. etc. Aage suggested maybe Redcliffe? Or Mt Coot-tha? Could be investigated? Really think it would be PAGE 9

better to have it here as previously. MAINTENANCE OF CLUB PREMISES Spring clean planned for January. Alan has equipment. Then we will have pest control spraying done. So who is able to help out? Alan will see where it fits in with his other jobs. Ulla will let us know the date when fixed. But there needs to be some cleaning and maybe replacement of ceiling tiles, etc. first. Aage raised that there seemed to be water problem over in corner on back wall. CocaCola fridge checked out. Doesn t work Ulla requested should she ask them to take it away? It needs rewiring would cost about $300 to repair. Agree Ulla will write letter and ask that it be picked up by end December, or we will dispose of it. GENERAL BUSINESS Arild reported that a BCC Health Inspector arrived while he was here in the premises before the last function. A report has been received. There are a number of requirements. A thermometer should be kept in each refrigerator. Must document temperatures of items when we get them in. We must label date on all items stored e.g. only 3 months to store bread. Any food reheated must not be used again any leftovers must be thrown out. Need documented cleaning process check list of what has to be cleaned e.g. toilets, oven, etc. etc. and it must be dated and signed off each time done. Also need a probe thermometer to make sure food is hot enough to be served. Question is, who will take responsibility for ensuring all this is done? Erik had investigated possibility of air fare donation by Thai Airways. Not possible but a welldiscounted fare could be obtained. Discussion about possibility of a raffle to be sold over a longish period, e.g. drawn at next year s Christmas Party for 2 air tickets (low or low/shoulder season) to Europe (so London, etc. alternative to Kobenhavn). Raffle at $5 per ticket if cost say $3500, would need to sell $5000, i.e. 1000 tickets. Erik/Ulla to find out re formal permission for raffles etc. The meeting closed at 8.50pm. NEXT MEETING: The next meeting needs to be before the Christmas party Wednesday 4 December 2002 at 6.30pm If you want to add or have anything changed in the minutes contact Joan Christensen by email at chrisglenva@bigpond.com or phone 07 3356 3512. The report from the Smørrebrødsaften / Smorgasbord, on November 9, is a very positive one. Many of the 85 guests sent "roses" for the tasty food and the bar attendants were kept busy. Gail played her soft, subtle tunes while food was enjoyed and later the livelier dance music sent people on the dance floor. The Committee appreciates the nice comments and welcomes your feedback. The more feedback about for example the food, entertainment, ideas for functions etc. the better the committee can organise functions to be enjoyed by Heimdal's members and friends in the future! Jørgen de Voss received a special Thank You from Ulla Turner for his work and design of the silver bowl given to Danish Consul Ole Andersen at the Grand Ball. A raffle was held with 3 prizes: A beautiful 'Adventskrans', a bottle of wine and 4 bottles of Carlsberg beer. Congratulations to the lucky winners. Attending The Danish Church Bazaar on November 16 at St Mark's Church at Mt Gravatt was a wonderful day. I have rarely seen so many young families enjoying themselves so much. The children had fun in their own little corner getting faces painted and outside in the playground while the parents did their Christmas decoration - and other shopping from the stalls. The kitchen was busy all day and the tables and chairs never empty for long. Since I am nursing a fractured wrist I was not very useful in the kitchen but instead had the opportunity to drink coffee at length, enjoy homemade cake and other goodies. Yes I loved the date cake too! I had a chat with many people and once more I was overwhelmed by the very positive remarks about this Newsletter. Thank you all Letter from the Editor very much! Talking about Christmas I went to Brisbane's Queen Street Mall on November 6 and did a bit of window-shopping. It continues to amaze me every year that Christmas decorations and Christmas trees are already "everywhere" in the shops in the first week of November! One particular shop had blue raindeers, which went very well in colour coordination with the blue decorations on the Christmas trees! However they didn't do much for yours truly's Christmas frame of mind. The spirit of a Danish style Christmas is likely to be found in a big dose at Heimdal's Christmas Bazaar where many stalls will tempt you and the kitchen is open selling yummy food. Bring children, grandchildren, other family and friends and with them experience a memory of your childhood Christmas with traditional decorations and the lovely scents from the kitchen. Save yourself the cooking that day, sit down and enjoy a coffee with æbleskiver or a more solid meal of hot dog and a beer. The bar, with its usual selection of cold drinks, will be open. The committee is busy organising the next functions and the Christmas Bazaar on Saturday 30 th of November could still use a few extra helping hands, please call Ulla or any committee member if you are able to help out whether before, during or after the event. The committee can use assistance with things like setting up tables, washing dishes or cleaning up inside the club or outside. The list is endless. If your particular skill is not needed at this point in time you might like to put your name down for assistance at future functions. Heimdal needs you! PAGE 11

Don't forget the Christmas Tree function on Saturday 14 th of December. If you want a lollybag/"godtepose" for your child at the Christmas tree function please fill in and cut out the form on page 19 and send it with your payment to Ulla Turner. Don't forget to order your tickets for the evening meal as well. The committee needs to know how many to cater for. While the weather will be somewhat different to Christmas in Denmark let us meet up at Heimdal and enjoy a feeling of Danish traditions. Let's get together in our little piece of Denmark Down Under = Heimdal. See you there! I would like to take this opportunity to wish you all a Happy and Safe Christmas and New Year. Your Say What is the future for the Danish Club? The dust has settled after the very successful birthday ball, and everybody I have talked to agree, that it was a most enjoyable event. We owe a big thankyou to Ulla, Ole and the committee for making this possible. Now may be a good time to start a debate on the question of the future direction of the Club and ponder on the options that Stig Hokanson put forward in his speech. As one who has worked in various committees over the years and also taken part in many of the functions on offer, I have given this a lot of thought. So my considered opinion is that it is becoming simply too hard and too much to ask of a small group of dedicated people to continue to maintain buildings, organise functions, cook and serve food, stock and man the bar, clean up, organise hall hire etc. etc. As Stig mentioned the Scandinavian immigration has effectively ceased and as the present Danes are getting older, we have to make the Danish Club attractive to the younger generations, who are looking for more sophisticated venues and entertainment than can be supplied by a group of volunteers. My suggestion is that, while we still would like to enjoy some of the things on offer now, we do not need to own premises to do this. I believe the investment of the present property was a sound one and we should be able to make a reasonable profit if the present building was sold We could then invest this money in a suitable safe investment portfolio and receive a sizable yearly profit instead of the present drain on resources to pay for rates, insurance and maintenance. This would take away this constant need to make money and we could use some of that profit to subsidise large events like the 5 yearly birthday balls (we can t expect Ole to continue to chip in every time). We might even be able to support worthy charity causes or offer sponsorships. Some of the functions, that now are poorly attended, could be dropped and we could retain only the typical Danish events like a couple of yearly smorgasbords, St. Hans, Christmas Party, Fastelavn and of course the very popular Ulla s Café. So where to have them? Maybe we could join the Norwegians and Swedes and hold joint functions in the Norwegian s hall, or we could hire different venues. An annual picnic and Fastelavn could be held in a park and Ulla's Café certainly lends itself to a joint Scandinavian function. It would be very interesting to hear what other members think of this, so write a note to the Editor with your say. Birte Spencer Thanks very much Birte. It would be good to get a debate started. Your Say Hello Ulla and all members of the Danish Club Committee, This is a little late, but Hans and I wanted to say a big THANK YOU for a great night on Sept 21st. We decided to come 2000 km to attend the Ball, and invited family and friends to share a table with us. It was a very good decision. The venue, food and entertainment were excellent. We know how much work has gone into the preparation of a night like that by everybody, and just wanted to let you all know, that it is very much appreciated. WELL DONE. All the best Wishes Hans and Annette Christensen Nyheder fra Danmark Alkoholregler Af MARIA VILHARDT Forskellige lande har forskellige regler for, hvor meget alkohol man bør drikke.

to alkoholfrie dage om ugen.

Dronning Margrethe: Jeg tegner hver eneste dag Jeg sørger altid for at have tid til min kunst. PAGE 16

HEIMDAL NOVEMBER GOLF I m hitting the woods just great but I m having a terrible time getting out of them Harry Tofcano One can tell we are in Tenterfield when the notice on the first tee states that play must not proceed until the ice has melted from the greens, one can tell we are at Tenterfield when the flies outnumber the excuses for a bad shot. The flies led Hannah to say, best not talk for fear of swallowing one, Jens Antonsen and I were talking to her when she did just that, swallow a fly, I think it s name was Louie, her main complaint about this was that it just wasn t crunchie enough. There were many tortoises on the course, I didn t see her swallow one though, crunchy as they might have been. Tenterfield Golf Club had it s centenary last year but not until the 1970 s did the Club upgrade to grass greens due to the lucrative pokies, apparently they were netting at that time $500 000 p.a.from them, our Club should be so lucky. Thanks to Grethe for the information for which she was awarded nearest the pin on the 2 nd., 6 th. and 9 th. holes for Saturdays game. And writing of pokies here is an interesting anagram, re-arrange the PAGE 20 words slot machines and you will get cash lost in em! The dam on the seventh hole was the only water hazard we had, the water being primary treated sewage pumped about a kilometre from the town, this mixed with well water is the main water supply for the course. I ll get my contact from Nuturf to do a piece on the pros and cons of such irrigation in an upcoming issue. Obviously under stress from lack of rain the course is holding up pretty well. Nothing better than to wake up on a Saturday morning to the sound of the magpies competing with the greens mower, (pleasing to see the mower equipment preparing the greens though), unlike waking up after two in the morning with the competing sounds of Richard and Jens bidding each other good night. Less than four hours later standing on the deck I saw Richard practicing putting on the 18 th. hole, yep, six in the morning. He had decided to skip breakfast. Saturday saw Kai, after much practise at Redcliffe finishing with 71 followed by Soren with 77 and Jens Antonsen coming in with a distant 84. For B grade a close finish with

Visti on 70, William on 71 and Grethe on 72. Soren with much skill took 27 strokes to take out the putting for A grade and Jens Andersen, on a count back, had 32 puts to capture the B grade. The 13 th. hole was unclaimed for nearest the pin but Bill had no trouble claiming the 18 th. The weekend was much enjoyed by us all, but for one sad note that unfortunately prevented Preben from joining us. Preben has been a great supporter of the club not only with his contributions of prizes at our dinner, but in his company throughout the years, he is a founding member of the club. Come Sunday the competition warmed up as the Eagles Nest was on offer at the grand sum of $81. William Spencer won on the 13 th., it was his Destiny, it was Written in the Stars, I also needed the money. Instead of Eagles Nest next year we should try the new Extreme Golf golf for here not only are the strokes counted but the time also, as for chess competitions. So one hits the ball then runs after it for the next shot striking it again and so on until, no doubt a little out of breath, the 18 holes are done. How about we build up to that by starting with Extreme Putt- Putt next year? Get in practice. On this Sunday Soren was consistent for position and number of least puts for Saturdays score was re-visited, B grade saw Kirsten on treogtredive. Nearest the Pin results resulted in balls resting neatly for Hanne at 2, Jens The Antonsen at 6, Hanne once again at 9 with William at 13 (you could have heard a pin drop). Holes 14 and 18 were unclaimed although Bill got ever so near. Bill however celebrated his B grade score of 74 with William on 76 and with one stroke more Grethe proudly waited for Richard to present. Unfortunately Richard didn t have the balls, even though he tried at the Bar to rectify this. In A grade Kai under a cloudless sky came home with 75 closely followed by Soren on 76 and Jens Antonsen following up with 79. Grethe and Kai, as they did last year, contributed a prize for most puts for the weekend and this was claimed by young Richard who got 8.325 divided into the Devils number. Kai and Grethe also donated a bottle of refreshment, this was won in a draw by Jens Antonsen who immediately put it up for the 30 th. celebrations. Thank you Kai and Grethe. Thank you also to Hanne for her time and effort in organising our get-togethers for without her efforts we would have not had such fun. Once again thank you. We have smoked eels for the 30 th., be there. Happy golfing, William PAGE 21

PAGE 25
