Jesper Bruun Rasmussen
12 Pranks and Early Danish Design Under the cover of darkness, three boys climbed unto a steam locomotive and manoeuvred it to Nærum north of Copenhagen. The next morning, the usual passengers turned up at the station, but were left waiting in vain for their train. The police found the culprits at their boarding school in Nærum and were able to completely dispel, with a severe reprimand, their childish excitement following their achievements of the previous night. The three friends were the brothers Flemming and Mogens Lassen and Arne Jacobsen. Already from a very young age, they knew how to make a mark and later in life were at the forefront of Danish architecture and design. Flemming Lassen and Arne Jacobsen entered into a partnership and designed several award-winning projects together including the House of the Future and Søllerød Town Hall (today Rudersdal Town Hall). At the design auction, we will be focusing our attention on early Danish modernism from the s with a number of works by the three architects. The highlight is without comparison Flemming Lassen s sculptural easy chair from 1938 made by cabinetmaker Jacob Kjær. It was shown at the Carpenters Association Exhibition, but with its split backrest it was too advanced for contemporary preferences and was not put into production. We are therefore talking about a unique specimen, one that Flemming Lassen kept in his home, and with an estimate of up to 1 million Danish kroner it could become Denmark s most expensive chair. In 1935, he designed The Hussar and The Tired Man, and these iconic easy chairs are also to be found at the upcoming auction (Lot No. 1064, 1063 and 1060). Contrary to the other two, Mogens Lassen went solo. During a stay in Paris in , he became familiar with the works of one of the leading figures of modernism, Le Corbusier. He used this inspiration for his primary calling as architect, but it also made its way into his furniture designs. This is evident in the unique dining table on offer, which was shown at the World Exhibition in Paris in 1937 and has been a part of the architect s private interior. Mogens Lassen also turned his attention to Egyptian cabinetmaking of the past, and this source of inspiration is seen in his furniture designs made with foldable frames, for instance the tray table up for auction from 1942 (Lot No and 1073). At the opening of the preview on Thursday 11 September, Nadia Lassen, the great-grandchild of Mogens Lassen, will give a talk on the two architect brothers, see programme p. 9. To a much larger extent than the other two, Arne Jacobsen followed the maxims of international modernism on function and mass production. Jacobsen s heyday was in the 1950 s, but besides famous classics from this period, the auction also offers some of his early furniture and lamps. For example two chairs made out of bent bamboo from 1937 with a curved shape, which laid the foundation for his later very famous shell chairs. The two standard lamps were designed by Jacobsen already in 1929 making them part of his earliest pieces of realised work. (Lot No and 1091). Their peer, architect Poul Henningsen, truly set the agenda when it came to lighting. Immediately after the World Exhibition in 1925, where he was awarded the Gold Medal for the so-called Paris Lamp, he created the rare copper pendant based on the same lighting principles for the legendary restaurant that was A Porta on Kongens Nytorv in Copenhagen. PH s virtuoso talent also shines brightly at the auction by means of his many other lamps including PH-5/3, also called The Millionaire Lamp (Lot No and 1138). Jesper Bruun Rasmussen

This as part of "living room in a bachelor's appartment". It was later modified to the example actually shown at the exhibition the following year It was then made either with runner legs or with legs as the present example. The chair has been interpreted as a fine contemporary and typical Danish comment to a more austere international modernism prevailing in Central Europe in the 1930s. 120 FLEMMING LASSEN b. 1902, d "Flemming's Chair". Large, unique, sculptural easy chair with Cuban mahogany frame. Sides, seat and back upholstered with patinated natural leather. Designed and made 1938 by cabinetmaker Jacob Kjær. Overstuffed easy chair with divided back, designed by Flemming Lassen for Jacob Kjær in Presented at the Cabinetmakers' Guild Exhibition the same year. After the exhibition, Flemming Lassen bought the chair, which may have been a little too progressive with this kind of back. In any case, no other chairs have been sold before or since. Initially the chair was upholstered with coarsely woven brown fabric. It was reupholstered with natural leather in the late 1950s or early 1960s, which is the present upholstery. At some point Flemming Lassen sawed off approximately 3 cm of the legs, as he thought the seat was to high. This made the chair look more like his other easy chairs with regards to leg length and seat height. The chair was not a success when first shown. Cabinetmaker Jacob Kjær told Flemming Lassen that his customers were afraid of draught coming through the divided back. In fact, this divide opens up the chair and provides it with a visual lightness as well as a sculptural expression. Functionally, the divide provides the perfect, integrated armrests. Today, the chair is notably one of the most audacious chairs made in Denmark in the 1930s, and exceptionally modern for its time. Some will probably see characteristics from Finn Juhl's designs within Lassen's chair, but one should note that Lassen's design preceeds Finn Juhl's "Pelican Chair" with two years. 127 1072 MOGENS LASSEN b. Copenhagen 1901, d. Holte 1987 "Paris Table". Rectangular black formica top with beech edge, "floating" on ash frame with chromed metal mounting. Manufactured by Fritz Hansen. H. 71 cm. W. 80 cm. L. 190 cm. Provenance: Architect Mogens Lassen. Exhibited: The World Exposition, Paris Exhibited: Magasin du Nord's Exhibition in Forum, Literature: Bernadotte & Lehm-Laursen "Moderne Dansk Boligkunst", vol. 2, ill. pp. 202, 217. Literature: Arkitekten, 1937, p. 85. The present table was used by Mogens Lassen in his home at Sølystvej 5 in Klampenborg. The table illustrates Mogens Lassen's Nordic, wooden interpretation of the iconic "LC-6" table by Le Corbusier, Pierre Jeanneret and Charlotte Perriand, and it is a tribute to the modernism that Mogens Lassen found on this journeys to Paris. It was thus suitable that the table came to be part of the Danish Pavilion at the World Exposition in Paris, It is possible that a few tables of this model were made. It is known that Mogens Lassen suggested pieces for clients who had their homes decorated or houses built by him. The table is illustrated as part of the interior decoration of an apartment in Christianshavn at the Pavilion in Paris in 1937, and then this particular example in photos from Mogens Lassen's own home. Whether the actual table exhibited in Paris went back to Mogens Lassen, and thus this actual example is the table from Paris is unknown, but definitely possible. Manufactured circa by Fritz Hansen. In the 1930s Frits Schlegel designed a number of furniture models, of which most were manufactured by Fritz Hansen. A few of these models went into regular production, but most models were only executed for specific interiors or exhibitions. These are only sporadically referenced in literature, and contemporary magazines. A characteristic of the frame, re-occuring in several of these, is the clearly marked flat bottom to which the legs are attached, a curved back with slats and upholstered with sweeping loose cushions with springs. Chairs model Designed Manufactured 1957 by Fritz Hansen. Table: H. 69,5 cm. Diam. 120,5 cm. (8) Provenance: Leo Henriksen then by descent in family. In 1956 Arne Jacobsen constructed what would be his most modern and daring one-family house. The round house at Odden harbour for Leo Henriksen, owner of the smokehouse for fish at Odden. Arne Jacobsen did in 1957 choose some of his newest models at the time, including this dining room suite which would later aquire the nickname "Grand Prix" after the model was shown, and honoured at the Milan Triennale that same year. 4.
BRUUN RASMUSSEN BREDGADE AUCTION

Another application will subsequently be sent to the Danish Cultural Assets Committee by Bruun Rasmussen on behalf of the buyer, now that the price is known. Should an export licence not be granted, the Danish Cultural Assets Committee would be obliged to acquire the purchased lot at the purchase price, and the buyer would thus not be bound to the purchase. 10. DESCRIPTION OF LOTS All lots are sold in the condition in which they are found when knocked down and as described in the catalogue and on the homepage with subsequently published changes and modifications. Description is done according to the best of Bruun Rasmussen s knowledge and on the cataloguing principles stated. The lots auctioned are often of some age or of a kind which makes it possible that they may contain defects, deficiencies, or may have been subject to restoration or damage not necessarily stated in the catalogue and on the homepage. Pictures are for identification only and cannot be used for an evaluation of the condition of the goods. Any person who wishes to bid at an auction should therefore satisfy himself of the condition of the lots for which he intends to bid by personal inspection at the preview held prior to the auction. The description is an indication of the prevailing opinion of scholars and expert at the time of the sale. If any doubts should arise after the purchase regarding the genuineness of the purchased lot or its conformance with the description, Bruun Rasmussen should immediately be informed thereof. Should the purchased lot be proved to be a forgery, or if the description contains material errors which lead to a considerably higher hammer price than that which a correct description would presumably result in, the buyer shall be entitled to cancel the purchase, after which the buyer shall be reimbursed for the total purchase price paid plus buyer s premium and VAT, when applicable. For material errors in the description in respect to measurements or weight, compensation shall only be paid on a percentage basis in proportion to the difference. The right of cancellation of a purchase in pursuance of the present conditions can only be exercised by the party who has bought the lot in question at Bruun Rasmussen and shall be subject to the presentation of a claim for cancellation in writing to Bruun Rasmussen within 2 years of the purchase date and to the purchased lot being returned to Bruun Rasmussen in the same condition in any and all respects which the purchased lot was in at the time of the lot being knocked down to the buyer. In the event of cancellation the buyer shall not be entitled to claim payment of interest on the purchase price nor shall the buyer be entitled to claim compensation for any other expenses or loss incurred, including any possible loss of profit in connection with reselling. It shall not be possible to state cancellation of a purchase in pursuance of the above provisions if: a the description on the day the lot was knocked down to the buyer was in accordance with the then generally accepted opinion of scholars and experts; b the only way of establishing whether the lot was a forgery at the time of the sale was the implementation of scientific processes, the validity of which was only acknowledged after the time of the sale, or which would have required a disproportionate amount of cost, or which would have been impossible to carry out without damaging the lot in question. In addition to the time-limits stated above, all purchases are subject to the Statute of Limitations stipulated by danish law by which Bruun Rasmussen is under no circumstance liable for purchases after 5 years from the date of purchase. COMMISSION Bruun Rasmussen Auctioneers Jesper Bruun Rasmussen, auctioneer Jørgen Byriel, officially appointed external supervisor Bruun Rasmussen undertakes to execute commission bids for bidders who are unable to be present at the auction. This is regarded as a service for customers who are unable to make a personal inspection of the lots at the preview. Bruun Rasmussen stresses that the information given cannot be used as the basis for complaints; complaints can only be based on the description. EXEMPTION FROM VAT Buyers shall, according to 2, pay full VAT on lots marked with an asterisk (*). BUYER S STANDARD PREMIUM 30% AUCTIONEERS MARGIN SCHEME As of 1 January 1995 new EC regulations came into effect regarding the sale of secondhand goods, works of art, collector s items and antiques; these items may now be traded under the Auctioneers Margin Scheme. Under the Auctioneers Margin Scheme the premium only is subject to VAT, i.e. the hammer price is exempted from VAT. The buyer s premium of 25% will thus henceforth include non-refundable VAT. FULL VAT * will be charged on goods that cannot be traded under the Auc tioneers Margin Scheme. These lots are marked with an asterix *. The buyer pays the auction premium of 24% plus 25% VAT on the hammer price as well as the buyer s premium. BUYER S REDUCED PREMIUM 24% is paid by buyers fulfilling the following terms/conditions: 1. Danish VAT registered buyers may choose to pay the 24% buyer s premium + 25% VAT on the total amount (Full VAT). The buyer may have the total VAT refunded and thus pays 24% in buyer s premium only. 2. VAT registered buyers in other EU countries may avoid Danish VAT by using their VAT registration number and thereby pay a buyer s premium of 24% only. 3. Residents of countries outside the EU meeting the Danish customs authorities requirements regarding the export of goods pay the buyer s premium of 24% only (see Conditions of Purchase 3, Exemption from VAT). ARTISTS ROYALTIES PAYABLE TO COPY-DAN CD Pursuant to current Danish legislation on copyright an artists royalty of 5% of the total price exclusive of VAT (i.e. hammer price plus buyer s premium 24%) shall be collected on works of modern art by all Danish and most foreign artists. These works are marked CD for Copy-Dan next to the lot number. For further information please refer to the Conditions of Purchase. BRUUN RASMUSSEN BREDGADE AUCTION
