3 Modern Design at Bruun Rasmussen This catalogue reflects the changes we are making to address the Modern Art market, which is in constant motion. Our aim is to anticipate the market s developments and fluctuations closely for the benefit of both buyers and sellers. Recognising that increasing globalisation is also characterizing the art market, we have chosen for the first time to publish our catalogue in English. We hope this initiative will be well received, but realize that many of you might still want the Danish text which can be found at For many years, the Modern Art and Design Sales at Bruun Rasmussen have been held in April and in October. The introduction of an additional Modern Art and Design auction in June will bring the total number of annual Modern auctions to three, an acknowledgement of the current prosperous market for Modern Art. As always, our Modern auction will feature an impressive array of Modern Furniture, Design and Decorative Art. The Furniture section focuses on the theme Crafted Four Decades of Dedication, and features handcrafted items from the important period in the history of Danish cabinet making, 1927 to1966. The selection includes an exceptional interior setting by Finn Juhl from 1941, appearing at auction for the first time; a unique funny cabinet also by Finn Juhl; and various handcrafted unique pieces from early Modernist architects such as Magnus Stephensen, Frits Schlegel and Tyge Hvass. These early, almost pre-modern, items are accompanied by many of the wellknown and highly coveted models by Frits Henningsen, Ole Wanscher and Kaare Klint. The Silver section includes an elegant, Art Deco, three-piece sterling silver tea set designed by Svend Weihrauch and executed by Frantz Hingelberg s workshop in1937. We are also pleased to offer two large and extensive sets of flatware in the stylish Bernadotte pattern from Georg Jensen. The Decorative Art section offers a variety of fine ceramics, glass and metalware. One of the highlights is the monumental bronze lid vase, by Kresten Bloch and Knud Andersen, with its attractive sang de boeuf glaze. Another impressive piece is the stunning sung glaze vase made by Carl Halier, with fitted lid and stand in bronze by Knud Andersen. Finally, Axel Salto is represented with a selection of his ceramics, most notably a superb sprouting style stoneware vase, with a compelling butterfly-wing glaze. We hope you will enjoy the catalogue!

Later it was shown at the 1943 "Svensk Form " exhibiton held at the Danish Museum of Decorative Art in Copenhagen. Here G. A. Berg presented a "workgroup" consisting of a table, lamp and this chair. In an article in "Nyt Tidskrift for Kunstindustri" from 1943 he himself describes the group like this: "My idea and purpose with the group was a working environment for a restless, hyperintellectual chief-executive with representative duties. A creative, sensitive personality, who s thoughts pour out, sparkling as a Northland- river in the spring. But a man,who knows the art of shaping his thoughts and dressing them with the proper language, while they turn into words. He dictates to his secretary and as such he has no need for a real desk. 29 Crafted - Four Decades of Dedication Works by Danish Cabinetmakers During the last ten years, we have seen a constantly growing interest in vintage Danish modern furniture. From an early feeble start, the market has grown to its select well-informed state of today, with a tremendous demand for Danish modern classics. What will be next is a question often asked. Or: Which young designer will be the Hans Wegner or the Arne Jacobsen of tomorrow? We guess the real question is whether there could be a new golden age of Danish furniture any time soon? Predicting the future is at best extremely difficult, but it seems more than likely that the answer is no! The success of Danish furniture design, culminating around should be seen as a window of opportunity in history - a rare period in time when a receptive international audience looking for something new coincided with conditions in Denmark in which the country, more less untouched by war, had a small-sized industry and a pool of skilled workers and craftsmen available. Furthermore, in the s a theoretical foundation had been laid in Denmark under the guidance of Kaare Klint. This was a school of functional needs devoted to perfect craftsmanship, and it was this tradition that pervaded an entire generation of architects graduating from the School of Furniture at the Royal Academy of Arts. Many of these architects would remain ardent proponents of Klint's ideas, others would oppose them, but the emphasis on craftsmanship was inherent in them all. Today, in the world of IKEA with new technologies and thousands of different materials available it is clear that the notion of modernization coming from traditional craftsmanship and the use of traditional wood materials was already an anachronism at its inception, one condemned to a fleeting existence. But even accepting this fact, what was it that made Danish furniture design so successful and special? The best answer is: The recurring annual exhibitions by the Cabinetmakers' Guild of Copenhagen, which started in 1927 and went on until No other event is anywhere near as significant to the development of contemporary furniture design in Denmark. Back in 1927, when Danish furniture production was at a low ebb in terms of quality and renewal, the exhibitions got off to a modest start. Focus was primarily on offering the participating cabinetmakers a chance to sell their pieces. But it soon became clear to the Cabinetmakers that they needed to do something new if they were to attract public interest. And what was new was the collaboration between architect and craftsman. The architects brought with them an understanding of the kind of furniture modern life required, while the cabinetmakers blew the life and pride inherent in craftsmanship into those pieces. Over the years architects and cabinetmakers would form regular partnerships, which would last for decades and which became one of the defining characteristics of the exhibitions. The best known examples are Kaare Klint & Rud. Rasmussen, Ole Wanscher & A.J. Iversen, Hans Wegner & Johannes Hansen, and Finn Juhl & Niels Vodder. Some cabinetmakers, such as Peder Moos and Jacob Kjær, continued to design their own pieces with other architects participating occasionally and working with various cabinetmakers. But it is telling that all Danish furniture designers of any importance in the period between 1927 and 1966 did at some point participate in the exhibitions. By the 1950s the exhibitions had developed into the Fashion Week of Danish Furniture, a place where new ideas were presented, ideas that would be modified and trickle down into mass production at furniture factories, thus influencing the way thousands and thousands lived. At this point, in general the cabinetmakers were still able to sell their costly handcrafted pieces, and the market sustained an entire industry of cabinetmakers. However, as the 1960s passed, the inherent anachronism of trying to produce in quantity by hand became more and more obvious as the cost of labour rose and furniture factories were able to produce their wares ever more inexpensively. It gradually became impossible to sell handcrafted pieces in any great numbers. Some workshops closed or scaled down operations. A few tried to buck the trend by rationalising production while still insisting on craftsmanship, but in the 1980s most ceased to exist. Today Rud. Rasmussen is the only workshop from the Golden Age still in operation. But the legacy remains with us and we are pleased to present a selection of pieces from this period. As the former rector of the Danish School of Design, the architect Viggo Steen Møller wrote in 1966 about cabinet making: Wood is a lovely material, but great care must be shown in the use of it. The happiness it brings to us in the shape of practical and aesthetically outstanding products from the hands of the artisan is a happiness full of optimism. (Litt. The craftsmen show the way. Ed. Povl Christiansen & Hakon Stephensen, Kbh p. 52.) BRUUN RASMUSSEN BREDGADE AUCTION

35 A life with Finn Juhls Furniture From the Home of Henrik and Kirsten Ravn It is always a privilege to be able to offer a complete Finn Juhl interior at auction. However the history of the furniture deriving from Kirsten and Henrik Ravn s home include not only a number of unique and - up to now - unknown Finn Juhl models, they are also of so early date that this sheds new light on the development of Finn Juhl s work. Mr Ravn and his wife commissioned Finn Juhl to decorate their home on three occassions. The first time was in 1941 when he moved into an appartment on the bank of the lake Sortedamssøen. The second time was in 1947 when they moved to a bigger appartment also on the bank of Sortedamssøen. The last time was in 1954 when they moved to a House in Lyngby. A house similiar to Finn Juhls own house and situated only a short distance away. Entrance at Sortedam Dossering, 1941 From the House in Lyngby BRUUN RASMUSSEN BREDGADE AUCTION
36 CRAFTED Finn Juhl designed a number of furniturepieces in 1941 for the first appartment on Sortedamsdosseringen. The pieces were all made by cabinetmaker Niels Vodder. He did however include pieces in the interior by others, such as the easychair of cane by Viggo Boesen, and what he described as standard sidechairs from Fritz Hansen. Sortedam Dossering, 1941 Sortedam Dossering, 1941 When the Ravn family moved to a bigger appartment in 1947,also on Sortedamsdosseringen, Finn Juhl again designed pieces that were made by Niels Vodder. But for this interior he included some standard models manufactured by Bovirke. Sortedam Dossering, 1950 Sortedam Dossering, BRUUN RASMUSSEN BREDGADE AUCTION 772

42 CRAFTED 575 FINN JUHL b. 1912, d Unique sideboard with frame of Oregon pine. Body, top with rail and three drawers and two doors in Cuban mahogany. Round knobs. Tapering legs with shoes of brass. Designed Made by cabinetmaker Niels Vodder in The sideboard was made for Mr Ravn as a part of a special commison in The sideboard is a previosuly unseen first sign of a path that Finn Juhl would follow in subsequent years. The choice of combining Cuban mahogany with Oregon pine is much favoured by Finn juhl at this early stage in his career. Both this sideboard and the diningtable from the Ravn residence, also offered in this sale, are so like the table and sidetable he later designed for the Copenhagen Cabinetmakers Guild Exhibition in 1944, that they must be seen as variations on a theme initiated with the present table and sideboard. The same can be said with the much publicized sideboard by Niels Vodder, he designed Literature: Grete Jalk [ed.]: "Dansk Møbelkunst gennem 40 aar", vol. 2, pp DKK / BRUUN RASMUSSEN BREDGADE AUCTION 772

Made for the home of Mr Ravn in The characteristic profile found on the frame of the table is a trademark of Finn Juhl, particular in his early years. It is first seen on the desk he designs for Niels Vodder for Cabi- netmakers Guild Exhibition in Later the same details can be seen on the table from exhibition in 1944, and in the display tables he designs for the Bing & Grøndahl showroom in 1947, and last on a small sidetable for maker France & son as late as 1960s. Copy of original draft by Finn Juhl dated with three different proposals for the execution of the table accompany the lot. This table was made by special order for the home of the Dentist Mr. Ravn in 1941, as one of a number pieces that was designed by Finn Juhl on this occassion. 48 CRAFTED 581 CD FINN JUHL b. 1912, d "Place setting Table". Unique circular table of teak, six-legged frame with curving rail, round tapering legs with shoes of brass. Underside of top with curving "thin" profile at the edge. Designed Made by cabinetmaker Jacob Petersen. H. 65 cm. Diam. 125 cm. 581 The "Place setting Table" was designed for the Bing & Groendahl store on Amagertorv in Copenhagen in It was Finn Juhl s first major interior design of a public space. This table is one of two similar tables made and was used in the big hall of the showroom facing the street Amagertorv. In an article printed in a special issue of the magazine "Arkitekten" - The Architecht - from 1947, Finn Juhl himself explains the construction like this: "Place-setting table" from the big hall. The curving shape of the rail allows for high joints and at the same time makes the table light. The top has been profiled very thin towards the edge because the horizontal level is its real function. Made of teak." 49 582 CD FINN JUHL b. 1912, d "The Westermann cabinet". Unique cabinet with legframe of Oregon pine and body of Cuban mahogany, six flip-down doors of Oregon pine with light greygreen painted centerpart. Handles of carved white bone. Round tapering legs with shoes of brass. Interior of Cuban mahogany with shelves of solid Oregon pine. Made on special order by cabinetmaker Niels Vodder in H. 106 cm. D. 60 cm. L. 140 cm. The cabinet was made as one of a number of individual pieces of furniture that were commisioned by publisher and editor Poul Westermann. From these the only known piece - so far- has been the "Westermann fireside chair" which can be seen as the forerunner for the NV-45 easychair. The above mentioned chair can partly be seen on the photo from the home in front of this cabinet. Poul Westermann was an editor/publisher and astute businessman who with an equal amount of foresight and skillful marketing, where he among other things hired French Cassandre to make his posters, made himself a fortune by publishing easy-to-read non-fiction.
