Jesper Bruun rasmussen

The Masters of Colours we welcome the extensive colouring, which is the trademark of art at the modern auctions. per Kirkeby is without doubt one of the most respected Danish artists, and he is the master of seven of the paintings at the auction. They were painted over a period of years ranging from 1965 to 1989, and are thus offering a good insight into his artistic development. in some of his production Kirkeby is circling around the connection between culture and nature most radically in his early works such as the picture that is put up for sale: Stakit (Fence), whose naturalistic elements are contrasted by an image from the mass culture a cobalt blue fence (cat. no. 968). in his later paintings, Kirkeby abandons the cultural references, and is devoting himself to describing various natural objects. Here, he never delivers anything in full, but zooms in to microscope range on things like tree trunks, stones, and rock formations, fragments of which are blown up on large canvasses. The result is abstract surfaces of structures and movement. These Kirkeby paintings always have an intangible aura, exemplified by the large pictures Komposition (Composition) from 1981-89 (cat. no. 990), and Sommervinter-Sommer (Summer-winter-Summer) from 1985-86 (cat. no. 979). From the Danish art treasures we also offer a museum-class creation by richard mortensen. This is a huge creation made up by two paintings, each measuring about 2 x 2.5 meters, with the title: Til Chopin, opus 12 (To Chopin, opus 12), painted in 1978-81 (cat. no. 966). with it s abstract and geometric shapes, the creation is in sync with the track that mortensen took up right after world war ii. Here he made a journey though bomb-ridden europe together with his friend robert Jacobsen an experience that became of paramount importance to his artistic activities. The goal of the journey was paris, where he joined the artistic circles around recently deceased gallery owner Denise rené. He was confronted by the thinking of that time, that it was possible to create a better world by renewing art. in paris, mortensen developed his characteristic constructive-abstract mode of expression, which he stuck to for the rest of his life, and which is brilliantly expressed in Til Chopin, opus 12. pictures of mass culture are distinctly represented by the five serigraphs by the legendary american pop artist andy warhol. The very incarnation of the special characteristics of this artistic school is seen in pepper pot (cat. no. 1120) from the famous series of soup cans Campbell s Soup i (1968). warhol also was very fond of portraying famous personages of world history, and at the present auction we offer portraits of such diverse people as mao (cat. no. 1122), Johann wolfgang von goethe (cat. no. 1121), and queen ntombi Twala of Swaziland (cat. no. 1119). as always, we also have names such as vilhelm lundstrøm, edvard weie, asger Jorn, Carl- Henning pedersen, Constant, Corneille, walasse Ting, and many, many more at the auction. we look forward to seeing you at the preview! As an artist and sculptor, Einar Utzon-Frank was a pure aesthete and cultivator of beauty, and is considered by many as the main representative of the classicistic stream in Denmark. He was heavily inspired by Greek, Archaic and early Renaissance sculptures, as can be seen in the artist's passion for and obsession with formality, proportions and often untraditional posture motifs. In 1918, aged just 30, Einar Utzon-Frank became a professor at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts and, with this title, established the guidelines for the development of modernist sculpture in Denmark. Utzon-Frank's own production subsequently moved in the direction of monuments, of which this piece from 1927 is a prime example. The work was designed as a landmark for Copenhagen Harbour, but was never erected. DKK 150,000-200,000 / 20,000-27,000 922 26 BRUUN RASMUSSEN BREDGADE AUCTION 836

Not only was this painting by Constant created in the year of CoBrA's birth, 1948, but it is also a true CoBrA work in spirit, expression and character. The painting is almost bursting with aggressive vitality. Without a shadow of a doubt, the bird-like creatures in the painting belong to a fantasy world - and not to the birdcage in the living room. Fantasy animals are recurrent expressive metaphors in Constant's early works. And in this painting, the creatures leap to the forefront with all the bristling rawness and power the mind can muster in its most eruptive moments. In around 1932, despite the considerable age difference, he developed a friendship with Wilhelm Freddie in a somewhat convergent understanding of surrealism. He participated at several exhibitions here in Denmark, including "Surrealistisk intervention" together with Freddie at Studenterforeningen (The students' union) in 1939. 979 CD PER KIRKEBY b. Copenhagen 1938 "Sommer-Vinter-Sommer" (Summer-Winter-Summer). Signed on the reverse Per Kirkeby 1985-86. Oil on canvas. 200 x 130 cm. Museum director Jens Erik Sørensen writes about Per Kirkebys paintings from the mid 1980's: "With the blue pictures, we are in the midst of a new nature. Not expressive representations of the nature we know, but rather pictures from Kirkeby's inner landscapes. As fundamentally has always been the case, for which reason any attempt at interpretation is undertaken at the risk of ending in various blind alleys. As Peter Schjeldahl has put it very precisely, an analysis of Per Kirkeby's painting is like 'trying to shovel sand with a hayfork'. And, he says, there is no other artist who 'in such direct and primitive way makes the wiever responsible for his own reaction'. These are open, Romantic pictures, which to a high degree appeal to the emotions, and to which we find our personal and widely differing approaches". 990 CD PER KIRKEBY b. Copenhagen 1938 Composition, 1981-82. Signed and dated on the reverse. Oil on canvas. 203 x 129 cm. Provenance: Acquired directly from the artist by the present owner. A common central theme in Per Kirkeby's paintings from the 1980s is the tension between figuration and abstraction. The underlying motif and the recognizable quality of former times seem, at this point, to completely fade away in non-objects and pictorial gesture. Yet at the same time the paintings always seem to keep a relation to the impression or the motif that made the artist start creating. In 1984 Per Kirkeby said: "Paintings never arise from nothing, nor abstract paintings". DKK 500,000 / 67,000 98 BRUUN RASMUSSEN BREDGADE AUCTION 836
