Abstracts Using Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) with children, adolescents and their parents in a clinical setting Camilla Wiwe Lipsker, Clinical Psychologist, PhD student Behavior Medicine Pain Treatment Services, Karolinska University Hospital & Department of Clinical Neuroscience, Karolinska Institute Within the existing health care model, a large number of individuals present with symptoms and disabilities due to maladaptive behaviour patterns leading to poor functioning and reduced quality of life. The continuing development of cognitive behaviour therapy includes Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT). In ACT, avoidance of pain, anxiety and distress in general, is considered a core problem leading to disability and reduced quality of life. Rather than focusing on the reduction of symptoms such as pain and anxiety, ACT promotes acceptance of negative private experiences in order to facilitate exposure towards activities that are meaningful although possibly painful. There is promising empirical support for acceptance oriented interventions for children and adolescents. This talk will focus on how ACT can be used in the treatment of children and adolescents in a clinical setting. A treatment model based on ACT for chronic pain will be described to illustrate the clinical applications, including age-appropriate adaptations for treatments with children and adolescents. Also, parental interventions will be presented. Common clinical difficulties will be discussed, along with suggestions of how to work with these problems. Furthermore, results from recent and ongoing research will be presented in brief. Out of the office and into the patients daily life: towards a more ecological treatment approach for psychotic disorder Dr. Tineke Lataster Maastricht University Medical Centre, Maastricht, the Netherlands Department of Psychiatry & Psychology School for Mental Health and Neuroscience It has been shown that psychiatric symptoms, including those of psychotic disorder, substantially vary over time. Both internal and situational factors determine this symptom variation, and understanding how it unfolds in daily life is therefore crucially important for the diagnosis and treatment of psychiatric disorder. In the first part of the lecture, I will show that real-time monitoring of psychotic symptoms with the Experience Sampling Method (a structured diary technique): (i) provides a much more detailed and fine-grained picture of symptoms, (ii) reveals patterns of behaviour that may be relevant for treatment, and (iii) provides information on interaction patterns between the patient and the context. In the second part of the lecture, I will discuss how these insights may help tailor treatment for the
individual patient. The PsyMate, a new prototype device specifically developed for delivering real-time monitoring in clinical practice, will be introduced. It will be shown how the PsyMate could be used for diagnostic purposes and how it can serve as a therapeutic tool for treatment of paranoia, hallucinations, and negative symptoms, as well as for testing whether these real-time interventions are effective. The PsyMate extends therapy from the office to the patient s daily life. With this technique, patients become active partners in the therapeutic process. They will gain insight in their symptoms and how they react to their environment, which will result in greater patient ownership and empowerment. Mange hilsner Kerstin Plessen Niels Bilenberg Per Hove Thomsen Hans-Christoph Steinhausen Der vil være sandwich til hjemturen.
