Modern Diversity With this catalogue Bruun Rasmussen opens its doors to this autumn s auction of modern art and design at 33 Bredgade, Copenhagen. At this moment in time it seems that the reluctance and caution which has lately dominated the art market is giving way to a growing optimism. It is therefore a particular pleasure to be able to present an auction of superior quality and featuring many rarities. The auction of design starts at 4 pm on Monday, October 26 and features outstanding lamps and furniture by PH, Hans J. Wegner, Finn Juhl, Poul Kjærholm and Kaare Klint. The highlights include rare lamps by PH and sets of Wegner s Cow Horn Chair and The Chair. Klint is represented by all the well-known models, although of particular interest is the original set of four Mix armchairs with a matching table created in collaboration with Edvard Kindt-Larsen. Last but not least is Johan Rohde s unusual 1900 copperplate chest of drawers: a veritable museum piece. The auction of modern art commences at 6 pm on Tuesday, October 27 with exquisite early works of the CoBrA movement by Carl-Henning Pedersen, Asger Jorn, Egill Jacobsen, Henry Heerup, Constant and Appel that are rarely auctioned off. The highlights of the other Danish and foreign works on offer are Per Kirkeby s 1987 Autumn Recollection as well as Michael Kvium s 1999 Stay Blind Painting, which measures 2.5 x 4 meters and is the largest painting by this artist to be sold at auction. The concrete movement represents a stark contrast to CoBrA and the auction on Wednesday, October 28 at 1 pm, features first-rate works by Robert Jacobsen, Paul Gadegaard, Ib Geertsen, Ole Schwalbe, Gunnar Aagaard Andersen and others. Furthermore, several additional works of the concrete movement will be sold at online auction 944 on Tuesday, October 27, beginning at 8 pm. Please visit www.bruun-rasmussen.dk for further details. The Danish collector and antique dealer Lau Sunde is famous for his knowledge on tribal art and his extensive collection of art from the world s most exotic places, particularly Africa and the Far East. A significant part of this collection, which took almost half a century to build up, will be featured at the auction on Thursday, October 29, 1 pm. Please refer to the article on page 386 for an indepth presentation. Happy bidding!

Literature: Guy Atkins: Jorn in Scandinavia 1930-1953, no. 136, ill. p. 330. Literature: Robert Dahlmann Olsen: "Rødgrønjorn", 1977. In this a detailed description and illustration of the painting. Literature: Troels Andersen: "En biografi årene 1914-53", Jorn is here seen together with the painting p. 88. Exhibited: "Dansk Kunst gennem 200 år", Charlottenborg, 1954, cat. no. 276. Exhibited: "Sider af abstrakt kunst i Danmark", Nikolaj, Copenhagen, 1981-1982, cat. no. 65. Provenance: Architect Robert Dahlmann Olsen, Dragør. Red, green and blue are the predominant colours of Asger Jorn s paintings of the early 1940s. Colours were for Jorn an important aspect of his painting but he did not see himself as a colourist as such: I don t really feel that I m a colourist, unlike Egill Jacobsen. Of course, it s all a matter of where one places the emphasis. (Atkins: Jorn in Scandinavia 1930-1953, pp. 35). The style is evidently influenced by spontaneous abstract painting, inspired by children s drawings and motifs from Norse mythology. As Jorn expressed it himself: The composition came by itself. I just began to paint from the edge, putting down one shape after another and so until the whole picture was filled. (Atkins: Jorn in Scandinavia 1930-1953, pp. 35). The auctioned red painting carries the title "Menighed" [ Congregation ], a title that encourages the viewer to embark on an investigation to seek to identify all the painting s whimsical little figures. Especially noted is the interplay between the male figure with several strings to the left and a female to the upper right with several attributes In one way or another, the parties seem to face each other in a confrontational, stubborn way. Regarding the individual parts of the picture I would merely add that the blue-grey mask figure to the far left is undoubtedly a self-portrait, recalling that of other and later pictures. (Dahlmann-Olsen: Rød/grøn Jorn [ Red/Green Jorn ] p.11, 13). DKK 1.000.000-1.500.000 / 161.000-200.000 200 BRUUN RASMUSSEN BREDGADE AUCTION 805

Ejler Bille develops his own idiom in the 1940's following extensive style experimentation in the 1930's. Bille composes his paintings by adding one little coloursaturated field after the other to create a painterly, condensed micro-cosmos. In his book "Ejler Bille" (Copenhagen,1961), Poul Vad offers the following description of the artist's work in the 1950's: "He thought he had reached as far as he possibly could in rendering painterly intensity, but he now understood that he could slowly and tirelessly focus on a painting and energise it further without a loss of spontaneity. Bille's work in these, his most mature, years was characterised by an ever-deeper absorption in his endeavour to explore colour and the opportunities they offer and of the ever-growing need to create an image where each square centimetre is fully charged with painterly colouristic power and thus offering artistic imagery of evermore intense expression". In the early 1930s, a new modernist, abstract expression arrived in Danish art through the involvement of Richard Mortensen, Vilhelm Bjerke Petersen and Ejler Bille in the movement of contemporary International Modernism - especially Surrealism - pioneered by artists such as Wassily Kandinsky and Paul Klee. This new direction was given voice in the periodical "Linien" ["The Line"] and in the exhibitions associated with it of which the first in 1934 is considered to be a milestone in Danish art history. Literature: Jan Würtz Frandsen: "Richard Mortensen: Afklaringens år 1940-1958. Besættelse og rekonstruktion", Copenhagen, 1992, fig. no. 262 (front side) and no. 197 (reverse side), ill. pp. 207 and 161. The present painting by Richard Mortensen is in fact two paintings - both created during the Second World War. The period 1940-1946 has been characterized as an intermezzo in the artist's production. During these years, placed be-tween the artist's surrealist phase in the 1930's and his position in the 1950's as a pioneer in concrete art and in international modernism, Mortensen is working with a kind of expressionism, in many ways reminiscent of, and fully equalling, the future Cobra painters. SELECTED PAINTINGS 459 CD PER KIRKEBY b. 1938 "Efterårserindring" (Autumn Memories), 1987. Unsigned. Oil on canvas. 200 x 200 cm. Provenance: Mary Boone Gallery, New York. Provenance: Private Collection, U.S.A. In the 1980s, Per Kirkeby departed from the figurative art of the 1960s and 70s with its clearly defined shapes and numerous references to the clichés of pop culture. Emulsion on fibreboard gave way to large compositions of oil on canvas in which reference to recognisable form was surrendered. Nature and painterly qualities now took centre stage but Kirkeby's perception of the landscape as motif differs from the horizontality of that of the easel painter, which is defined by foreground, horizon and sky. Rather, Kirkeby's paintings constitute vertical incisions into simmering matter; a conglomerate of tree trunks, branches, hollows or rock formations. His paintings evoke associations of forest floors with layers upon layers of nature in process - in growth or decay. Per Kirkeby's landscapes are often associated with the aesthetics of Romanticism in which nature is perceived as offering an image of human emotion and sentiment. The title "Efterårserindring" (Autumn Memories) qualifies such an interpretation. Paintings from this period with such vivid colour intensity as this painting are very rarely seen at auction. the works he created around the millennium year, offering a continuation of the artist's disposition towards the shadowy sides of human existence. This eerie family portrait - a disillusioned cyclical representation of the human condition from cradle to grave - refers both in format and ambition to Kvium's first monumental figurative painting created in an illusionistic style, the Chóros series from 1991. Furthermore, the work establishes concrete reference to Michael Kvium and Christian Lemmerz' film "The Wake" (2000) since the couple and the three children in the painting represent the protagonists of the film, H.C. Earwicher, his wife and their triplets. DKK 800.000-1.000.000 / 107.000-134.000 BRUUN RASMUSSEN BREDGADE AUCTION 805 273
