The provisions laid down in this subject module description are issued pursuant to the curricula for the Bachelor Programme in Social Science, the Bachelor Programme in the Humanities, the Bachelor Programme in the Humanities and Technology, and the Bachelor Programme in Natural Science. Unless otherwise specifically stated below, the provisions set out in the curriculum for the Bachelor study programme in which the student is enrolled shall also apply to this subject module. Object 1. The object of the subject module in the Bachelor programme in Environmental Biology is to equip the student with: Academic skills to identify, describe, define and solve issues within the subject area of Environmental Biology, with the application of relevant theories and methods. Knowledge of fundamental theories and methods within the subject of Environmental Biology, as well as a deeper understanding of the biological areas particularly relevant to the field of Environmental Biology, including knowledge of the main ecological environments, population biology, elementary animal and plant physiology, and field biology. Experience of and exemplary insight into how the subject of Environmental Biology enters into scientific, cognitive and social contexts. The subject module in Environmental Biology is also intended to qualify the student for entry to a Master's programme in Environmental Biology or related Master s programmes. (2) The subject module comprises one of the two subject modules included in the Bachelor programmes offered at Roskilde University. The subject module corresponds to 35 ECTS credits. Competency profile 2. The subject module in Environmental Biology aims to equip students with the following knowledge, skills and competencies: Knowledge:

2 Knowledge of selected fields of biology, including the main biological environments (ecosystems), basic animal and plant physiology, population biology and field biology. Knowledge of the fundamental theories of environmental biology and their applications, including the application of such theories to solve practical, application-oriented issues. Knowledge of central experimental methods, their status and application in the subject of environmental biology. Understanding of the social and scientific-theoretical aspects of environmental biology. Skills: The ability to identify and apply appropriate environmental biological theories and methods (including the methods of field and experimental biology) in order to illuminate both basic research-related and application-oriented issues. The ability to generate, analyse and present empirical data. The ability to undertake systematic literature searches in topics relating to the subject of Environmental Biology, and to read and use this literature in Danish and English. The ability to communicate the knowledge gained, orally and in writing, in an accurate and academically relevant manner, in accordance with the academic requirements and standards applicable to the subject. Competencies: Competency to recognise, describe, identify and analyse environmental biological issues using the theories and methods of the subject, both independently and in collaboration with others. Competency to design and carry out experiments and/or studies, and to analyse, interpret and evaluate scientific results in environmental biology in the light of the methods used. Competency to reflect on how knowledge gained from environmental biology contributes to and is challenged by developments in society. Competency to study independently and contribute fundamental environmental biological knowledge to collaborative projects. Competency to organise and manage a project within one s own and externally imposed frameworks and deadlines. Content and overall structure 3. The subject module corresponds to 35 ECTS credits, and consists of the following elements: Subject module project in Environmental Biology (15 ECTS) Subject module course 1: An Introduction to Ecosystems (5 ECTS) Subject module course 2: Population Biology (5 ECTS) Subject module course 3: Animal and Plant Physiology (5 ECTS) Subject module course 4: Field Course & Data Analysis (5 ECTS) Recommended academic requirements 4. Before commencing this subject module, the student is expected to have acquired skills and competencies corresponding to: Course in Functional Biology and Evolutionary Botany. Course in Functional Biology and Evolutionary Zoology. The subject module builds upon the competencies acquired in the foundation part of the Bachelor Study Programme in Natural Science. Students who do not possess these or equivalent competencies must expect to have to make additional study efforts in order to complete the subject module in the prescribed period.

3 Description of the elements of the subject module 5. Title Type Subject type ECTS Objectives description (assessment criteria) Overall content Subject module project in Environmental Biology Project Compulsory 15 ECTS points The objective of the project is for the student to acquire: Knowledge: Knowledge of the concepts, theories and methods of environmental biology that are relevant to work with the chosen issue. Familiarity with the principles of the practical and theoretical methods utilised in the project work. Skills: Skills in carrying out relevant literature searches in databases, and in summarising this literature to form a sensible and comprehensive background in relation to the project s topic and issue. Skills in applying relevant methods and analyses. Skills in drawing up comprehensive and precise protocols for the practical (experimental or investigative) work. Skills in communicating and discussing the project and its results in a clear manner, in accordance with scientific standards. Competencies: Competency to identify relevant environmental biological issues within a defined topic, formulate hypotheses, and design and carry out experiments/studies to test these hypotheses. Competency to be able to explain the main principles underlying the methods used. Competency to analyse and interpret the data obtained in relation to basic (explanatory) models and data from the literature. Competency to organise and manage a project within one s own and externally-imposed frameworks and deadlines. The project must address an issue within environmental biology, and must involve the processing of empirical data (obtained either through one s own experiments and/or studies, or from the literature). The project must also include a summary of the scientific literature that forms the background to the topic and/or issue. Emphasis is placed on knowledge of the methods applied (strengths and weaknesses) and on the processing and interpretation of the data collected. The project work concludes with the compilation of a written project report.

4 Study requirements Teaching language Foreign language reading proficiency Form of examination The project report must be between 20 and 100 pages in length. Pages are defined here as standard pages of 2,400 characters each, including spaces. The page count does not include the table of contents, bibliography, abstract or any appendices. It is recommended that the student takes subject module course 2 and/or subject module course 3 prior to or in parallel with the project. Danish or English. Reading proficiency in English is required. The project is conducted in groups of 2-6 students, cf. however the relevant Bachelor programme curriculum. The project work is assessed by an oral examination. The duration of the examination, including assessment time, is 30 minutes per student. The project report must be between 20 and 50 standard pages in length, on the basis of 2,400 characters (incl. spaces) per page, excluding the front page, table of contents, bibliography and any appendices. The examination is a group examination for the members of the project group, and is based on the students project report. The examination includes individual presentations within a topic selected by the examiner and communicated to the students three weekdays before the examination. Each individual presentation, including questions from the examiners, should have a duration of approximately 15 minutes. The individual presentations are followed by a joint examination of the project. The examination takes the form of a conversation between the students, the examiner(s) and the moderator. As mentioned, the examination takes its starting-point in the project report, which means that in addition to issues directly relating to the report, questions may be asked on the academic area of the project module as a whole. An individual assessment is undertaken of each student s performance. The assessment consists of an overall assessment of the project report and the oral presentation. Permitted examination aids: During preparation time and at the presentation, students may make use of literature, AV equipment, etc., as they wish. Knowledge of the most important biogeochemical cycles (C, N and P) in the relevant ecosystems. Knowledge of the most important organism types and their mutual interactions. Skills: The ability to analyse and understand the physical/chemical and biological relationships in the relevant ecosystems. Skills in identifying the framework conditions and/or processes that play the main roles in the structure and function of these systems. Skills in identifying overall similarities and differences in the structure and function of the relevant ecosystems. Skills in identifying changes in ecosystems that may be due to natural or man-made influences. Skills in presenting and communicating the knowledge gained in a precise and academically competent manner. Competencies: Competency in assessing the degree to which changes in the structure and function of selected ecosystem types are due to natural processes or human activity. A theoretical/practical course that includes theoretical analysis of the main biological environments (aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems), focusing on the physical/chemical environment, the most important types of organisms, and their interactions with each other and their surroundings. In connection with the course, a three-day field course is held in which is practical work is done to investigate substance cycles in one of the relevant ecosystem types. English Reading proficiency in English is required. None. Individual, written, closed examination of three hours duration, with set assignment. The course teachers will set the assignment on the basis of one or more case studies, which will be presented in the task in the form of text, tables and/or figures. The students must therefore read and interpret the biological information in the task, and then use this

6 Assessment Moderation information and their own knowledge to answer the questions. Efforts are made to ensure that the questions cover a wide range of the course s topics and issues. Examination aids: Electronic calculator (all types). Re-examination takes the same form as the ordinary examination. Seven-point scale Internal Subject module course 2 Title Type Subject type ECTS Objectives description (assessment criteria) Population Biology Course Compulsory 5 ECTS credits The objective of the course is to enable students to acquire: Knowledge: Knowledge of basic theories regarding the composition, development in time and space, and regulation of populations, including the effects of climate, age structure, genetic factors and other populations. Knowledge of basic theories of the structure and development of biological communities, including factors that influence this structure and development. Knowledge of the development and use of simple population models in the analysis of population biology issues. Skills: Skills in applying the theoretical material learned to identify and assess the significance of environmental biological issues in relation to the spread and development of populations and/or biological communities. Skills in applying the knowledge acquired to solve practical and/or application-oriented issues relating to the spread and development of biological populations and communities. Skills in presenting and communicating the knowledge gained in a precise and academically competent manner. Competencies: Competency in assessing the strengths and weaknesses of the theories and (explanatory) models presented. Competency in solving practical and/or application-oriented problems relating to population biology.

7 Overall content Teaching language Foreign language reading proficiency Study requirements Form of examination A theoretical course dealing with the physical and biological factors that play a role in the distribution, structure, growth and regulation of populations of living organisms, including the role of climate, age structure, genetic composition and intraspecific and interspecific interactions (e.g. competition, mutualism, predation, parasitism and disease). Finally, the role of these factors in the structuring of biological communities is examined. The course consists of a series of lectures and exercises (calculation exercises, student presentations of research literature, symposia, etc.). Danish or English Reading proficiency in English is required. None. Individual, written, closed examination of three hours duration, with set assignment. The course teachers will set the assignment on the basis of one or more case studies, which will be presented in the task in the form of text, tables and/or figures. The students must therefore read and interpret the biological information in the task, and then use this information and their own knowledge to answer the questions. Re-examination: Re-examination usually takes the same form as the ordinary examination, but the Study Board may choose a different examination form. If the re-examination is an oral examination, it is based on randomly drawn questions. The student is given 30 minutes for preparation, including drawing the examination question. The student starts the examination by giving a brief presentation (maximum five minutes) of the examination question. The examination takes the form of a dialogue between the student, the examiner and the moderator. The examination has a duration of 30 minutes, including assessment. Knowledge of the most fundamental biophysical principles by which these organs function. Knowledge of the adaptation of organisms to their environment and their interaction with their surroundings, and familiarity with the structures and processes involved in these adaptations. Skills: The ability to perform simple measurements of physiological processes in both plants and animals. The ability to carry out simple physiological experiments with both plants and animals. The ability to apply the knowledge gained in a physiological context. Skills in presenting and communicating the knowledge gained in a precise and academically competent manner. Competencies: Competency to understand the important physiological processes in plants and animals. Competency to apply the knowledge acquired to explain and solve issues of a physiological nature, as well as to provide solutions to issues in related areas of biological science, such as population biology and ecophysiology. A theoretical course in the basic physiology of plants and animals. The course covers the most important physiological processes in plants and animals, including circulation and circulation systems, respiration, nutrient uptake, water and ion balance, photosynthesis, growth and development, neurophysiology (in animals), resource allocation and temperature regulation. The course includes a number of lectures and calculation exercises. Danish or English. Reading proficiency in English is required. None. The examination consists of an oral examination based on a randomly drawn question. The student is given 20 minutes for preparation, including drawing the examination question. The student starts the examination by giving a brief presentation (maximum five minutes) of the examination question. The examination takes the form of a dialogue between the student, the examiner and the external moderator. The examination has a duration of 20 minutes, including assessment. Re-examination takes the same form as the ordinary examination.

Aquatic field biology II. Terrestrial field biology III. Data analysis Compulsory 5 ECTS credits The objective of the course is to enable students to acquire: Parts I and II (Aquatic and Terrestrial field biology): Knowledge: Knowledge of Danish natural habitats, such as watercourses, lakes, fjords, forests, meadows, salt marshes, moorlands, etc. Knowledge of the flora and fauna to be found in these localities. Knowledge of the physical and chemical conditions that characterise these localities, and of how these conditions affect the composition of flora and fauna. Skills: Skills in measuring selected basic physico-chemical parameters that characterise the conditions of the locality. Skills in collecting flora and fauna both qualitatively and quantitatively, using the correct methods. Skills in identifying and classifying the collected flora and fauna, using national and international identification literature. Competencies: Competency to identify and assess the composition of flora and fauna in a given locality in relation to the physical and chemical conditions that characterise the locality in question, and in this context, assess whether the locality has been significantly disturbed by human activity. Part III (Data analysis): Knowledge: Knowledge of how to design an experiment and/or study with the necessary replication, use of controls, etc. Knowledge of how to select and use appropriate statistical methods to analyse the data collected. Skills: The ability to design and perform experiments and studies in a scientifically correct manner. The ability to select appropriate statistical methods, apply these to the analysis of the collected data, and assess the strengths and weaknesses of these methods.

10 Skills in being able to read and understand scientific literature which includes the results of statistical analyses. Competencies: Competency in designing and carrying out experiments or studies, including the subsequent processing of data, in a scientifically sound manner. Overall content Teaching language Foreign language reading proficiency Study requirements Form of examination Parts I and II Aquatic and Terrestrial Field Biology: Practical field courses on Danish flora, fauna and natural habitats. Each course has a duration of six days, and takes the form of a residential course at a field station. During the courses, a number of aquatic habitats (watercourses, lakes and estuaries) and terrestrial habitats (forest, meadow, bog) are visited, where flora and fauna are collected and identified. The incidence of plants and animals is discussed in relation to the organisms requirements towards the surrounding physical and chemical environment. Both sub-courses conclude in a presentation seminar. Part III Data analysis: Theoretical/practical course in application-oriented statistics and experimental design. The course covers a range of methods and theories which in combination constitute the foundation for the design of experiments and studies. A number of the statistical methods most frequently used in the analysis of biological data are then presented, including descriptive analysis, comparison of two or more averages, analysis of relations (correlation and regression statistics), etc. The sub-course includes a number of lectures and calculation exercises. Danish or English. Reading proficiency in English is required. It is recommended that the student has taken subject module course 1: An introduction to Ecosystems. The examination is in three parts: A: 80% participation in Part I, together with approved participation in the concluding presentation/seminar, Aquatic Field Biology B: 80% participation in Part II, together with approved participation in the concluding presentation/seminar, Terrestrial Field Biology C: Part III, Data Analysis: Written examination of two hours duration, with set assignment. The examination questions consist of a number of tasks drawn as widely as possible from the syllabus. Permitted examination aids: textbooks, own notes and electronic calculator (all types).

11 All three parts must be passed in order for a pass grade to be awarded in the examination. A single overall grade is awarded. Assessment Moderation Re-examination takes the same form as the ordinary examination. Pass/Fail Internal Entry into force and transitional rules 6. På kurset gennemgås de vigtigste fysiologiske processer hos dyr og planter, herunder cirkulation og cirkulationssystemer, respiration, næringsoptag, vand- og ionbalance, fotosyntese, vækst og udvikling, neurofysiologi (hos dyr), ressourceallokering og temperatur-regulering. Kurset omfatter en række forelæsninger og regneøvelser samt et laboratoriekursus á 4 dages varighed. Til: Et teoretisk kursus i dyrs og planters grundlæggende fysiologi. På kurset gennemgås de vigtigste fysiologiske processer hos dyr og planter, herunder cirkulation og cirkulationssystemer, respiration, næringsoptag, vand- og ionbalance, fotosyntese, vækst og udvikling, neurofysiologi (hos dyr), ressourceallokering og temperatur-regulering. Følgende forudsætninger skal være opfyldt for at den studerende kan aflægge prøve i fagelementet: Rapporter fra laboratoriekurset skal være godkendt inden den studerende kan aflægge prøve i fagelementet. Hjælpemidler: Elektronisk lommeregner (alle typer). Til: Prøven består af en mundtlig prøve, baseret på spørgsmål trukket ved lodtrækning. Den studerende får 20 min (inklusiv trækning af spørgsmål) til forberedelse. Den studerende starter eksamen med en kort præsentation (max 5. min) af sit eksamensspørgsmål. Eksamen forgår som en dialog mellem den studerende, eksaminator og ekstern censor. Eksaminationen varer 20 min inkl. votering. Fagmodulkursus 4: Feltbiologi og Dataanalyse: Titel: Feltbiologi og Dataanalyse Til: Feltbiologi og Dataanalyse (Field course & data analysis) Prøveform: Kurset bedømmes gennem aktiv deltagelse. Hermed menes, at de studerende skal deltage i: Del I, Akvatisk feltbiologi: Deltagelse i alle undervisningsaktiviteter (feltture, indsamling og efterfølgende behandling samt mundtlige oplæg) på et niveau, der svarer til kompetencebeskrivelsen. Den studerende skal deltage i mindst 80 % af de udbudte timer. Del II, Terrestrisk feltbiologi: Deltagelse i alle undervisningsaktiviteter (feltture, indsamling og efterfølgende behandling samt mundtlige oplæg) på et niveau, der svarer til kompetencebeskrivelsen. Den studerende skal deltage i mindst 80 % af de udbudte timer. Del III, Dataanalyse: Skriftlig prøve á 3 timers varighed med bunden opgaveformulering. Opgavesættet består af en række opgaver, der så vidt muligt dækker det gennemgåede pensum bredt. Til Prøveformen er tredelt: A: deltaget i 80% af Del I, Akvatisk feltbiologi B: deltaget i 80% af Del II, Terrestrisk feltbiologi. C: Del III, Dataanalyse: Skriftlig prøve á 3 timers varighed med bunden opgaveformulering. Opgavesættet består af en række opgaver, der så vidt muligt dækker det gennemgåede

13 pensum bredt. Hjælpemidler: Lærebøger, egne noter samt elektronisk lommeregner (alle typer). Alle tre dele skal være bestået, før prøven er bestået. Ændring p. 1. september 2017 Fagmodulkursus 2: Populationsbiologi (population biology) Prøveform: Individuel skriftlig stedprøve á 3 timers varighed med bunden opgaveformulering. Kursets undervisere udarbejder opgaven på baggrund af en eller flere cases, der i opgaven præsenteres i form af tekst, tabeller og/eller figurer. Besvarelsen af de stillede spørgsmål kræver derfor, at den studerende kan læse og tolke de biologiske informationer i opgaven, og dernæst anvende disse informationer og egen viden til at besvare til stillede spørgsmål. Det tilstræbes at spørgsmålene dækker et bredt udvalg kursets emner og problemstillinger. Hjælpemidler: Elektronisk lommeregner (alle typer). Omprøve og sygeeksamensform er den samme som den ordinære prøveform (ændret pr. 1. september 2015) Til: Individuel skriftlig stedprøve á 3 timers varighed med bunden opgaveformulering. Den studerende får 30 min (inklusiv trækning af spørgsmål) til forberedelse. Den studerende starter eksamen med en kort præsentation (max 5. min) af sit eksamensspørgsmål. Eksamen forgår som en dialog mellem den studerende, eksaminator og censor. Eksaminationen varer 30 min inkl. votering. Censur: Ekstern Til: Intern Fagmodulskursus 3: Dyr og Planters Fysiologi (Animal and plant physiology) Censur: Ekstern Til: Intern Fagmodulskursus 4: Feltbiologi og Dataanalyse (Field course & data analysis) Overordnet indhold: Del I og II. Akvatisk og Terrestrisk feltbiologi: Praktiske feltkurser omhandlende dansk flora, fauna og naturtyper. Hvert kursus har en varighed på 6 dage og afholdes som et internatkursus på en feltstation. På kurserne besøges en række akvatiske (vandløb, søer og fjorde) og terrestriske (skov, eng, mose) lokaliteter, hvorfra flora og fauna indsamles og identificeres. Forekomsten af planter og dyr diskuteres i forhold til organismernes krav til miljøets fysiske og kemiske rammer. Del III. Dataanalyse: Teoretisk/praktisk kursus i anvendelses-orienteret statistik og eksperimentelt design. På kurset gennemgås en række metoder og teorier, der tilsammen danner baggrunden for design af eksperimenter og undersøgelser. Dernæst præsenteres en række af de statistiske metoder, der oftest anvendes til analyse af biologiske data, f.eks. deskriptiv analyse, sammenligning af to og flere gennemsnit, analyse af sammenhænge (korrelations- og regressionsstatistik) m.v. Delkurset omfatter en række forelæsninger og regneøvelser.

14 Til: Del I og II. Akvatisk og Terrestrisk feltbiologi: Praktiske feltkurser omhandlende dansk flora, fauna og naturtyper. Hvert kursus har en varighed på 6 dage og afholdes som et internatkursus på en feltstation. På kurserne besøges en række akvatiske (vandløb, søer og fjorde) og terrestriske (skov, eng, mose) lokaliteter, hvorfra flora og fauna indsamles og identificeres. Forekomsten af planter og dyr diskuteres i forhold til organismernes krav til miljøets fysiske og kemiske rammer. Begge delkurser slutter med et præsentationsseminar. Del III. Dataanalyse: Teoretisk/praktisk kursus i anvendelses-orienteret statistik og eksperimentelt design. På kurset gennemgås en række metoder og teorier, der tilsammen danner baggrunden for design af eksperimenter og undersøgelser.
