AtAkrotiri,on the Greek island ofsantorini,there is an enigmaticfresco painting (known asthe Ship Procession Fresco or theflotilaf resco ),representing aboattrip betweentwofortifiedcities,whichneverthelessarenotthe protagonistsofthecomposition.somethingsimilarhappensin the CityFresco,anaerialview ofacoastalcity(realor imagined)foundin1997atthebathsoftrajanin,rome.this couldbeconsideredthefirstcompletecityscapeinthehistory ofpainting.instabiae,nearpompei,someromanfrescoes partialydepictingacoastalcityhavealsobeenfound. ThisinterestincityscapepaintingstartedbyLorenzetididnot createacontinuousorremarkabletraditioninitaly,(although smalbutbrightcityscapesappearasbackgroundsinsome worksbythemostfamouspaintersofthatera,suchasinthe SaintHelenaandtheHolyCross bypierodelafrancesca).
