Thedisplayhasaresolutionof873x500pixelanditsbrightnesscanbeadjustedonascalefrom 0to9.ThevideosignalcanbeseteithertoNTSC (USA)ortoPAL(EU).Thefieldofviewis24 horizontalyand19 verticaly. Atthiszoom leveltheoutstretchedarmsofanaveragebuiltpersonarestilin thefieldofvision.thisfacilitatestherecognitionandpreventionofapotential imminentcolision(especialyintotaldarkness). SCENARIOALPHA ToalowabeterjudgementoftheusabilityoftheTILO-3Z+,itwastestedfordiferentapplications(Inordertoperform thetestasauthenticaspossiblethefolowing imagesshowtherealimagetheuserseesonthedisplayofthetilo-3z+.). ScenarioAlpha:Itwastestedhowtospotanunconscious/helplesspersonwith the10availablethermalfilters. Thetaskwastospotalifelesspersonincompletedarkness.Althermalfilterswere applied(oneaftertheother)atanexternaltemperatureofapprox.20 Celsius.This wasdonetoutilizethespectrum ofpossibilitiesoferedbythetilo-3z+andto evaluateitsfulpotential. ThethermalfilterWH(whitehot),RH(redhot)andBH(blackhot)showthehot areasinthepertinentcolor.ontheotherhand,thethermalfilterscr(coldred)and CG (coldgreen)showthecoldestareainthepertinentcolor. ThethermalfiltersRH,CRandCG aretacticalfilters:redisusedtomaintainone s nightvisioncapabilities,whilegreenreducestheamountoflightreflectedbythe eye. 7
SCENARIOALPHA ThefiltersRB(rainbow),RBHC(rainbowHC)andIORN(ironbow)aretechnicalfiltersusede.g.toidentifythermalbridgesinbuilding. ThefiltersGLOW (glowbow)andhot(hotest)arespecialfilters,whichareparticularlyinterestingforhunting,astheydisplaytheheatsignaturewithcolors,while minimalizingtheglare. 8
SCENARIOBRAVO ScenarioBravo:InthistesttheTILO-3Z+wasutilizedextensivelyforhunting purposes.itwasmountedontheheadbandwhichwaswornunderahat. DuringtheduckhunttheTILO-3Z+wassuccessfulyusedforthenighthunt. Withthethermalvisiongooglesitwaspossibletospotandretrieveamale malardduckextremelyquick.themeadowandhisheatsignaturecontrasted excelently,sowedidnotneedtobringinourgermanshorthairshe-dog.we usedthethermalfilterbh(blackhot). Duringourhuntwealsotestedifthedevicecanbeusedtolocalize,identify andobserveanimals.itwasfoundthattheusageofthetilo-3z+isadvantageousalsoduringtheday.amongotherswewereabletosightamalefox from ahighseatandtohunthim down.initialywecouldnotobservehim throughthebinoculars.withthetilo-3z+wecouldtrackhispaththroughthe woodscontinuously,untilhereachedtheedgeoftheforest,wherewecould trackhim withtheriflescopeandslayedhim. 9
SCENARIOBRAVO Withoutthermalimagingwewouldhavedetectedthefoxonlybycoincidence.WiththeTILO-3Z+itwaspossibletospotthefoxminutesbeforeitwas slayed,andwecouldtrackhisexactpathuntilhereachedthefieldoffire(outsideoftheforest). SCENARIOCHARLIE Inthecontextofpoliceandmilitaryworkwetestedtheidentificationofpersonsandthings.Inordertoalowabetercomparison,weusedagainal10 thermalfilters. ScenarioCharlie:1personwithKevlarhelmetandalongweapon(AR15) hadtobeidentifyatanambienttemperatureofabout15 Celsius. As expected,itwas possible to identifythepersonwithalthermal filtersinthistest. The image ofthe weapon and helmetwasbest,whenusingthefilterswh,rhandhot. When using these 3 filters there wasaclearcontrastbetweenweapon/helmetand person/suroundings. 1
SCENARIOCHARLIE WiththethermalfiltersRBHC and IRONtheweaponandhelmetcould stilbeeasilyidentifiedwithgood contrastinrespecttothesuroundings. WiththethermalfiltersBH,CR,CG, RB and GLOW the weapon and helmetcouldstilbeeasilyidentified butthecontrasttothesuroundings wasweak. Withitswidevarietyofthermalfilters,theTILO-3Z+isaveryusefultoolfor policeandmilitary.itenablesthefastidentificationofpersonsandobjectsat dayandnight. Bypressingitsbutonsonlyfewtimesthebestfilterandbrightnesssetings canbeselectedquicklytoadjustthetilo-3z+tothelocalenvironment(forest,city,hot,cold,etc.). 12

Thesizeofthedevicehadalsotobeadequateinordertobestowedaway easilyandtransported(especialforcovertoperations). ItItshouldbeeasyandintuitivelytous,inordertopreventmistakesincritical situationssuchasarests.thepossibilitytowearitontheheadorona helmetwasalsoessentialtous.furthermore,itneededtobemountableon atripodforstaticusageinordertobeabletoconductlongterm observations ofbuildingsandresidentialstreets. Inadditiontotherequirementslistedonthepreviouspageforpoliceandmilitary,itwasimportanttoustobeabletoidentifygameofanykindandtodeterminethespecies,sexandasthecasemightbealsoage). TheTIG shouldbesuitabletosearchgame(especialyhoofedgame)at nightevenonroughterain(forest,reed,corn). Duringpolicework,militaryuseandhunttheTIG hadalsotobewaterproof. Itneededtoremainoperationalincaseofcold,heat,rain,snow,mudand contactwithwater. HOW AND WHATDID WETEST? First,westudiedthemanualoftheTILO-3Z+.Itwasprovidedwiththedevice asacolorcopy.wewereabletoquicklyunderstandthemodeofoperation andhandling,sothatwecouldstartourtesting.howtoutilizethedevicewas trainedatdaylight.afterwardswestartedwithscenarioalpha. TheTILO-3Z+washeldinfrontoftheeye,whilethesubjectwaswalkingthroughcompletelydarkenedroomsinordertospotahelplessperson.This testwasperformedwithal10availablethermalfilterstoassessthem individualy. ThenwestartedscenarioBravo:WeusedtheTILO-3Z+ondiferenthunts (mostofthetimeswithheadband).duetothenatureofthehunt(gameis moving)wewereabletotakephotosofdeadgameonly(werefrainedfrom usingthevideooutputsignal.). 14
FINALCOMMENTS Furthermore,wetestedthelampsoftheTILO-3Z+.Theredandwhitelight wasusedtosafelyclimbhigh-stands,aswelasfornightsearchandtosupportthecutingofgame. WecouldnottesttheIR-lightaswewerenotinpossessionofanightvision device. InscenarioCharliewetestedthecapabilityconsideringpoliceandmilitary aspects.althermalfilterswereused.personshadtobeclearlyidentifiedas welastheobjectstheywerecarying(weapons). CONSWENOTICED ThehandlingoftheTILO-3Z+seemedverycomplicatedatthebeginning. Aftersomehoursofpractice,wefoundittobelogicalandintuitive.Athis pointchangeinluminouscolorandthermalfiltercouldbeperformedwithfew pushesofbutonseasily,withoutthinking. Themissinginformationregardingtheremaininglifetimeofthebateryisnegative(Thereisonlyaflashingbaterysymbol).Therefore,theremaining operationtimecanonlybeestimated.anoptionalindicationoftheresidual baterylifewouldsurelybeusefulforpoliceandmilitaryusage. TherearelimitationstooperatewiththeTILO-3Z+innarowrooms,aseven withthezoom level0.8apersoncanbeonlyfulyencompassedstartingfrom 5m distance.
