The Spring Collection H.A. Brendekilde s young woman holding a little girl s hand is shown on a bed of the first anemones in a bright beech forest, as a sign of emerging spring, almost upon us after a long, dark winter. Just like the anemones, which announce brighter times to come, Bruun Rasmussen once again sees optimism taking root. Here, at the start of the year, we have observed positive and renewed confidence in the art market, with increased activity in items consigned to us, and for the first time in 18 months, auction prices have stabilised and risen. I believe we are gradually moving towards a market that is flourishing once again just like Emil Nolde s red tulips! We look forward to presenting our spring collection at the preview in Bredgade. Jesper Bruun Rasmussen Brendekilde and Nolde s spring flowers are reproduced on the cover of this auction s two catalogues of antiques and modern art. H. A. Brendekilde: De første anemoner, 1889, oil on canvas. Estimate: DKK 1,000,000-1,200,000. Emil Nolde: Tränende Herzen und Tulpen, 1952, watercolour and gouache on paper. Estimate: DKK 300,000. Forårets kollektion H.A. H. A. Brendekilde: De første anemoner, 1889, olie på lærred. Vurdering: DKK 1.000.000-1.200.000.

Svend Aarkrog: "Acquired in 1958 for DKK 700 from teacher's college professor Skibsted of Knudsgade 6, Silkeborg. He sold the work because he needed a new Volkswagen. He originally wanted DKK 900 for the work; I said I would think about it and borrowed the work to do so. Inger and Grandmother didn't like it, which is why they drove to Silkeborg to return it. The occasion was celebrated with coffee at the café. But I still wanted the picture and wrote to Skibsted that I would take it on the condition that it was a little cheaper. We agreed on a price of DKK 700. Skibsted had purchased it from a local tobacco dealer who had received it from a certain Jorn in exchange for some tobacco". "Poet and author Jens August Schade, who died in 1978, wrote a novel in 1944 entitled 'People meet, and sweet music fills the heart', a paean to love and his best work. It was made into a film in 1967, though it was difficult to translate into moving images the almost innocent yet down-to-earth erotic excitement found in the novel's numerous fantastic scenarios". Acquired by the Wørzner family directly from Jorn. Svend Aarkrog: "At the time of this picture's creation, Jorn was deeply influenced by Klee. Inger and I were in Bern in 1963 and visited the Bern Art Museum, which featured a section devoted entirely to Klee, and here we saw a picture that very closely matched that of Jorn". The proprietor of Galerie Denise René, to which the artist was affiliated, named the painting 'Châtel', a place in the French part of Switzerland, from which Denise René had recently returned, when the picture was to be exhibited in Paris. Acquired by Svend Aarkrog in 1958 for 10.000 DKK from the artist's son, High Court lawyer Franz Giersing. Svend Aarkrog: "In Haavard Rostrup's book about Harald Giersing's drawings, the following letter appears on page 21 dated 20/8 1908, from the artist to the painter Sig. Swane: 'I've had a model for a week and have painted a picture with three figures, rough contours, 'matériaux grossiers' as Cézanne would say, but with a certain vigour in their composition, I hope. I had a horrid minx for a model - gorgeous but unspeakably depraved. I couldn't get Thora, she must be out in the country. But good Lord, are these models expensive; this one cost 80 Øre an hour...'. Giersing was in Paris in 1907 and was taken with Pointillism, thus called for its technique of applying paint in small dots. The abovenamed painting is a good example of this technique". The letter's connection to the painting is confirmed by Lennart Gottlieb in his biography, "Giersing, Maler-Kritiker- Menneske", 1995, p. 115. Svend Aarkrog: "The Nolde Museum owns a farm that was leased to a farmer by the name of Kahlke. This family owned several Nolde watercolours which had been given to them by Nolde to commemorate family occasions. For example, daughter Gerta Kahlke received a watercolour as a confirmation present in 1952. In 1960 Gerta was married to a certain E. I visited Mrs Folkvang to purchase a winter painting by Jens Søndergaard, but it did not live up to my expectations. She asked if I was interested in buying a Wiig Hansen sculpture that was standing in a corner in a garret covered in dust. She had never liked the sculpture but her husband had once considered having it cast in bronze, and traces of it are still visible though the project was abandoned. The sculpture had been valued at DKK 4.500 by art dealer Preben Hansen of LIEN near Slettestrand. Mrs Folkvang was aware that the valuation was low, but for some reason she wanted it sold at that price". "In issue no. 8 of 'Kunst' from April 1961, Ruth Munch wrote the article: 'Svend Wiig Hansen. Livskraftens yngling' (Svend Wiig Hansen. Vitality of Youth). The article contains a picture of the sculpture 'Mod Solen' and states the following: 'Wiig Hansen's voice does not issue solely from a barren world. But the tones he does strike are never gentle. His brutal coarseness is an essential factor, and is a basic element of his 1954 sculpture, 'Mod Solen'. This fine piece of sculpture in fired clay depicts a seated woman. Shielding herself from the sun with one hand, the female figure is at once finely and roughly shaped into a basic, earthy fecundity. She represents the best in humanity, and she is completely beyond Wiig Hansen's otherwise so omnipresent schism between beautiful and ugly, good and evil. This compact female figure is a bull's eye. The air around her is filled with life-giving, true authenticity'". DKK 75,000 / 10,000 BRUUN RASMUSSEN BREDGADE AUCTION 812 23

Within the period of ca. 1925-1935, Vilhelm Lundstrøm created his most stringent and most colour resolved compositions. In a 1930 review, art historian Vilhelm Wanscher wrote: "Vilhelm Lundstrøm is one of the few modern painters who maintains a fixed ideal and who aspires methodically to the highest purity in colour and form." (Wilmann & Brøns, p. 196). The shapes are reduced to what is almost their geometrical essence. And with his most powerful images the complementary contrasts reach their extreme. The composition currently auctioned is rendered in complementary colours that are exceptionally intense and vibrant. Lundstrøm was, by dint of his early international orientation and not least his years living in Cagnes-sur-Mer in Southern France (1923-1932), completely au courant with the stylistic tendencies of the time. During his time and later there were several attempts to place his work in a purely "ism" sense between Picasso and Braque's cubism, Fernand Léger's artistic idiom and purism as practiced by Le Corbusier and Amédée Ozenfant - without doing Lundstrøm full justice. Art historian Finn Terman Frederiksen highlights the artist's efforts around 1925 as an individual manifestation of the constructivist realist trends of the time without specific role models (Lundstrøm, "100 år 1893-1993", p. 66). With this statement he allies himself with Preben Wilmann, who concluded that Lundstrøm took from others only what he needed to turn out a Lundstrøm. This work, from a rarely offered period in the artist's oeuvre, contains all of the elements that go into making an excellent and iconic Lundstrøm. "There is a discernible evolution in Jorn's manner of titling his paintings, just as there is in the style of the paintings themselves. The period from 1939 to 1943 was experimental and eclectic. For his titles Jorn often chose imaginary names with a peculiar brand of ironical grandiloquence: Akada, Feligrams, Gaganda... Gofs Pops, Guganaga..."
