Jesper Bruun Rasmussen

An artistic rebel s centenary It is now one hundred years since the birth of one the most important Danish artists in an international context, Asger Jorn. The event is being marked with exhibitions at Louisiana Museum of Modern Art, the National Gallery of Denmark and Museum Jorn. Here at Bruun Rasmussen, we will be celebrating his centenary with a large number of Jorn s own works and works by his friends. Jorn was co-founder of CoBrA, a leading figure in the development of spontaneous-abstract painting and something of an artistic rebel. When, in 1964, he won one of the Guggenheim s prestigious awards, he thanked the head of the foundation by uttering: Go to hell with your money Bastard! a statement that embodies his radical rebellion, both as a person and artist. One of Jorn s artistic highlights is Skt. Hans III (1952) from the series Årstiderne (The Seasons), which Jorn started during his lengthy hospitalisation for tuberculosis at Silkeborg Sanatorium. The work up for auction is dedicated to the month of June and is populated by a myriad of life-affirming creatures the Aganakker (cat. no. 677). More than 40 of Jorn s works are set to go under the hammer, and his humorous approach to art is expressed to the full in the peculiar ceramic sculpture Giulietta from 1970 (cat. no. 663). Read more about Jorn on page 50. Jorn s friends included Carl-Henning Pedersen, Egill Jacobsen, Erik Ortvad, Karel Appel, Pierre Alechinsky, Corneille and Christian Dotremont, all of whom are represented at the auction. The latter was also a cofounder of CoBrA, and the poet and philosopher of the group. His works were always based on the written word, which featured as beautiful, almost calligraphic patterns. They are often completed by a poetic text at the bottom of the painting, as in one of the works up for auction which reads Quelquefois en Extrême- Nord, l haleine est bleue, contre le froid, comme la nuit, contre la glace (Sometimes in the far north, your breath is blue against the cold, like the night against the ice) (cat.no. 688). Another international name at the auction is the Chinese artist Walasse Ting, who was also associated with CoBrA and Jorn. His artistic career developed in New York, where he was inspired by pop art and abstract expressionism. A number of his colourful works with their distinctive women have found their way to us, including Catch me a Butterfly from 1979 (cat. no. 732). The mastodon Willem de Kooning also chose to leave the country of his birth for a life in America, and with an estimate of DKK 1.5 2 million, his composition from 1978 is the auction s highest estimated work (cat. no. 750). Rather less enthusiastic about America was one of the most popular figures in Danish art and literature. Hans Scherfig is best known for his jungle pictures and satirical novels, but now we focus on another side of him with two paintings from his stay in New York in 1929 30. While there, he experienced the Great Depression, which had a huge influence on his artistic work and his ideological stance. In one of the works, Scherfig depicts the approach to the city with ships, skyscrapers and the Statue of Liberty, while in the other, he has moved into the city, with its traffic jams and crowds (cat. no. 628 and 627). Read more about Scherfig on page 22. Welcome to Jorn and his friends! Jesper Bruun Rasmussen

Art, love and communism Hans Scherfig in New York Most people know Hans Scherfig (1905-1979) for his colourful jungle paintings of rhinos, tapirs and flamingos and his satirical writings such as Det forsømte forår (The stolen spring) and Den forsvundne fuldmægtig (The missing clerk). At this auction, we will focus on another side of him with two paintings from a stay in New York from November 1929 to June 1930. One work depicts the approach to the city with ships, skyscrapers and the Statue of Liberty, while in the second, we move into the city, with its traffic jams and crowds. Both paintings are executed in the artist s habitual naive style, which he introduced at his début exhibition in 1928. An encounter with New York during the Great Depression Aged just 24, the young Danish artist made the trip across the Atlantic. The reason for the trip was love to meet Elisabeth Karlinsky again, an Austrian artist who later became his life partner. A seasick Scherfig arrived just days after the Wall Street Crash and therefore experienced the Great Depression in New York, with its high unemployment and poverty, at close range. Through a long series of letters to his father, C.D. Scherfig, (currently located at the Royal Library) and more than 250 paintings, drawings and woodcuts, he describes his experiences of the America that would later become one of his pet aversions: In one street, the unemployed camped at construction sites, shaving with broken glass, eating their food from old tin cans or standing in line at the Salvation Army soup kitchen in the biting cold and the street next to it was Fifth Avenue, with grand mansions and jewellery stores. This was one object lesson in class division ( ). Nowhere else in the world could a capitalist class society be experienced as simply, crudely and clearly as here at this time. Art s anti-americanism While in New York, Scherfig tried to earn a living from his art and was highly productive. His favourite motifs included the city s modern architecture, traffic and crowds, as shown by the two works up for auction. He was, however, more critical when it came to the American culture and mentality, and recurring motifs include aggressive police officers equipped with batons, overweight capitalists and the uniform man of the masses with his characteristic toothpaste smile, who, for Scherfig was a symbol of the excessive optimism and faith in social mobility that prevailed despite the Depression: Today I am admittedly a dish washer, but tomorrow I might be Mr Ford. The stay did not prove to be especially lucrative for Scherfig, who sent the following report home to his father: Now my exhibition has finally opened, and quite a few people have been coming to see it. Most are quite vocal about their displeasure one lady said: Well, that s not real painting, it s like something children do. But there are also some who are enthusiastic. Scherfig s negative view of The American way of life should be seen in the context of a general trend that prevailed on the European cultural scene at this time. In the early 1900s, the United States came to play an increasingly important role in Europe economically, politically and culturally and over time, Ford, Heinz, Disney, jazz and canned food became well-known phenomena all over Europe. This massive influence was seen as a threat to European values and many were opposed to this Americanisation Scherfig included. An artistic and ideological turning point Among the positive experiences that Scherfig had during his stay was his meeting with a number of African Americans, who, in contrast to the white Americans, are portrayed as cultured individualists and full of life. He also became one of the communist, intellectual and revolutionary artists involved with the magazine New Masses and the associated John Reed Club a kind of preparatory school for promising proletarian-minded artists. There is no doubt that the experiences Scherfig had and the lessons he learned as a youngster in New York during the Great Depression marked a turning point for him both artistically and ideologically. It was during his stay that he began to hone the social and political criticism in his works. Scherfig later stated, on various occasions, that this trip had had a huge influence on his definitive ideological and political stance. On his return home, he became involved with the leftist Danish journal Monde and later a member of the Communist Party of Denmark (DKP) a party he remained loyal to for the rest of his life. With the two works up for auction, we delve deeper into a significant period for one of Denmark s best-loved artists with, to put it mildly, an anti-american disposition. 22 BRUUN RASMUSSEN BREDGADE AUCTION 846

Provenance: Merchant James Meyer, Copenhagen. Hence by descent in the family. "Jais Nielsen spent the summer of 1918 in Jægerspris (...) On the occasion of the 25th anniversary of KE 1918 (the Artist's Autumn Exhibition) he told Politiken: 'I've had fun painting Frederik VII and Countess Danner at Jægerspris. Along with Rude, I spent the summer of 1918 close to the little castle where the amiable royal couple once had their summer residence... and I tried to recreate some of the atmosphere. I borrowed a Daguerreotype of the Countess in her crinoline with ruffles and flounces. It was so picturesque, almost Hans Christian Andersen-like in its spirit. I did what I could to bestow the picture with cheerful bright colours, but of course the style was new and cubist, so I took quite a beating. In reality, we had some wonderful days. We had some noble advocates - Prof. Oluf Thomsen, for example, who wrote a feature article about the new movements, and Tetzen-Lund, Oluf Thomsen and others bought paintings by the young artists. It was not all resistance. From time to time, we were able to pay a tailor's bill'" (Quoted from Abildgaard p. 131). DKK 500,000-600,000 / 67,000-80,500 38 BRUUN RASMUSSEN BREDGADE AUCTION 846

Hellerup 1967 "Stående pige med blomster (Blomsterpigen)" (Standing girl with flowers / The Flower Girl), 1947 (1933). Signed G. Henning. Stamped Lauritz Rasmussen, København. Bronze. Mounted on a granite base. H. 175 cm. Base H. 80 cm. H. in total 255 cm. "Stående pige med blomster" is the first of the three sculptures, the merchant Aage Sørensen bought from Gerhard Henning in the late 1940s and early 1950s. For many years the three sculptures were placed at the Asani Factory in Viborg. Literature: Dorthe Falcon Møller: 'Gerhard Henning' in "Weilbach, Dansk Kunstnerleksikon, Tredje Bind", Copenhagen 1995, the sculpture mentioned under 'Værker" (Works). Executed in the following versions: plaster (1942), cement (1943), bronze (1946, Frydenlund), bronze (1947, The firm Asani, Viborg - the present sculpture), bronze (1947 Liseberg, Göteborg, Sweden), Bronze statuette (1933, Ny Carlsberg Glyptotek, Copenhagen). The statuette version at Ny Carlsberg Glyptotek (1933) with a slightly different hairstyle. Provenance: The company Asani, Viborg. The nude female form is the main theme of Gerhard Henning's work, and, along with Kai Nielsen (1882-1924), he stands unconditionally as one of the leading figures of classic, inter-war Danish sculpture. Monumental works by the artist very rarely feature at auction. "Blomsterpigen" (The Flower Girl) can, in various ways - not least in the counter-pose position - be compared to his main work "Moderne pige" (Modern girl) (1930, Ny Carlsberg Glyptotek), which marks the artist's move towards a smaller, antique-inspired expression or what art historian Hanne Abildgaard has called "a leaner, more contemporary nudity (...)" (Dansk Skulptur i 125 år, Kbh. 1996, p. 139). During the 1930s, the artist simplifies his expression, and in his best and most characteristic works - which include the work up for auction - vigor and vitality are united with monumental clarity and calmness. Asger Jorn 100 years and his friends Asger Jorn and his friends On 3 March 2014, it is the 100th anniversary of the birth of one of the most important Danish artists of the 20th century. We ll be celebrating Asger Jorn (1914-1973) at this international auction, which will feature a long list of works by him and his CoBrA colleagues. Expressionist, artistic rebel and political activist are just some of the labels that rightly followed Jorn, and he stands as a leading figure in the development of spontaneous abstract painting. Celebrations are set to take place at several Danish museums in connection with the 100th anniversary of his birth. Until February 23 Louisiana Museum of Modern Art is showing the acclaimed exhibition Jorn and Pollock, where his efforts are compared to the works of the American legend. The exhibitions Asger Jorn Restless Rebel and Expo Jorn Art is a Festival follows suit at the National Gallery of Denmark and Museum Jorn in Silkeborg respectively. Jorn at auction Jorn was irrefutably a central figure among the postwar European avant-garde artists. At Bruun Rasmussen, we have for years been aware of the international demand for his works from the mid 1930s to the early 1970s. We are now marking his centenary with this themed auction, where, through a rich selection of works, we will not only be putting the spotlight on Jorn, but on his artist friends, too, including Karel Appel, Constant, Corneille, Pierre Alechinsky, Christian Dotremont, Ejler Bille, Egill Jacobsen, Carl-Henning Pedersen and Erik Ortvad. Imaginative CoBrA Jorn was probably best known for his time in the CoBrA art movement, which he co-founded. The group existed from 1948-51, and its members were particularly preoccupied with the unconscious and the imagination, which they felt could create new, liberated art. They sought an unspoiled mode of expression that people could relate to, whoever they were. In their quest for something original and genuine, they drew inspiration from children s drawings and primitive folk art such as African masks and sculptures, among other things. Jorn s paintings often deal with themes that preoccupy us all: life, death, love and happiness. Like many of the post-war artists, Jorn harboured ideas of community and socialism and insisted on a universal, abstract mode of expression, which could help to unify war-torn Europe. He was critical of an elevated conception of art, and he consciously challenged high-brow culture with banality, irony, humour and anti-aesthetics. Jorn was also interested in myths and fairytales. He believed that gods, monsters and fantastic creatures are always symbols of people and can be used to tell us something relevant to us all. Artist and writer Asger Oluf Jørgensen was born 1914 in Vejrum near Struer. He originally trained as a teacher but decided immediately after the completion of his training to live as an artist, heading for Paris on his newly purchased motorcycle in 1936. Here, he became the pupil of one of the greats of modernism, Fernand Léger, and experimented with different expressions, materials and joint works in both Paris and Denmark in the years that followed. During the occupation of Denmark, the Danish artists were prevented from travelling outside the country, but immediately after the war, he returned to Paris, now with a more international-sounding name, Jorn. Jorn worked with a variety of materials and media: painting, graphics, sculpture, weaving, drawing, collage and ceramics. He painted more than 2,200 works and also wrote a vast number of articles and textbooks about every thing that interested him in the worlds of art and politics, etc. He was acquainted with a large network of artists, philosophers, poets, scientists and political thinkers. Despite the fact that Jorn experienced several bouts of serious illness, he continued working throughout his life. After contracting tuberculosis, he spent almost two years at Silkeborg Sanatorium, from 1951 52. Upon his discharge from the sanatorium, he travelled to Switzerland to convalesce, and then to Italy, where he bought a house and chose to leave Denmark for good, returning only for brief visits. Jorn had six children from three marriages. He died in 1973, aged 59. 50 BRUUN RASMUSSEN BREDGADE AUCTION 846

Provenance: Phoebe & Guy Atkins, London. "The figure reveals itself in its full physicality, a challenging, coquettish creature. As one of the most amiable female characters Jorn has created, she is part decoy, part sphinx - in her posture and the dark gaze with which she looks upon the beholder. Jorn effectively plays with the contrast between the unglazed clay of the figure itself and the elegant white majolica, which he chose for the base and the smart headgear".
