Jesper Bruun Rasmussen

Portrait Art, Fabergé and Chinese Treasures In September, we had the pleasure of selling a child portrait by Christen Købke to the Nationalmuseum in Stockholm. At this auction, we will be in the company of several portraits by Købke including one that shows his favourite sister Conradine in front of the window in their childhood home in Copenhagen. She is portrayed with strong intimacy, which Købke achieved by letting her appear razor-sharp against the sketch-like interior an artistic tool which ensures that all attention is directed towards her personality. Købke gave Conradine the painting as a wedding present in 1830, and until now it has been in the ownership of the family (Lot No. 10). The Swede Carl Larsson, whose work is currently being shown at Ordrupgaard in the recommendable exhibition Carl Larsson. The good life, also mastered the portrait genre. It is rare to find his pieces on the auction market in Denmark, and so we are delighted to be able to present the portrait Ingrid och röda Liljan (Ingrid and the red lily) from 1908. The little girl is the housekeeper s daughter Ingrid with the clear blue eyes and light summer dress. Larsson is famous for his idyllic portrayals of every day life in his home Lilla Hyttnäs in Sweden, and the beauty and joie de vivre in these pieces are inescapable just as in the watercolour on offer (Lot No. 49). Also among the members of the artists colony in Skagen, the portrait was a preferred genre, and in a charming study for the famous Sankt Hansblus på Skagen Strand (Bonfire at Skagen Beach, St. John s Eve) from 1903, P.S. Krøyer has portrayed his daughter Vibeke together with Krøyer s brother-in-law, engineer Valdemar Triepke, who is bending down to show the attentive girl the large bonfire (Lot No. 39). On the whole, the auction presents numerous Krøyer paintings including depictions of evening moods, sea themes and returning fishermen. During the 20th century, many Danes were stationed in China, and they were fascinated with the country s cultural heritage. At the time, the Chinese were preoccupied with revolutionary thoughts, and antique art was later banned on orders from Chairman Mao. The cultural heritage thus became obtainable for Danish collectors, and this is the reason why so many prominent private collections are found in Denmark today. Up for auction is a large and magnificent Ming gilt bronze Buddha from the collection of the former director of the East Asiatic Company, C.K. Hansen (Lot No. 171). Other Chinese treasures at this auction originate from the collector Sofus Black, who worked for the Great Northern Telegraph Company in China from 1902-31. At our international auctions, we offer Chinese art and Russian art and antiques twice a year. In the latter category, we present a large selection of silver from the jeweller Carl Fabergé in St. Petersburg, including a tri-fold photo frame created by Anders Nevalainen, workmaster from 1896-1903 (Lot No. 350). We will have a look even further back in time with more than 20 antiquities, which originate from the whole of the Mediterranean area and where most of them cover a time span from the 5th century BC to the 3rd century AD. One of the highlights is a Roman Medusa head from the Traianeum temple in Pergamon, which was built as a tribute to Zeus in the period 98-117 AD and excavated by the archaeological museum Berliner Antikensammlung at the end of the 19th century (Lot No. 248). At this auction, one also has the opportunity of acquiring a very special early Christmas present. The auction contains a number of extravagant shining stars such as a necklace set with a heart-shaped brilliantly white diamond weighing approx. 5.02 ct., as well as a brooch set with a large natural ruby, numerous diamonds and a Padparadscha in the colour of a lotus flower a gemstone that was only discovered in 1750 in Sri Lanka and today is considered one of the world s absolute rarest (Lot Nos. 627 and 596). Welcome to this year s Christmas auction! Jesper Bruun Rasmussen
