Working conditions for seafarers at the centre 2012 was the year when the Maritime Labour Convention (ILO/MLC) gained enough support for the transitional implementation process to start. From 20 August 2013, shipowners worldwide will have to take seafarers occupational health and safety into account in order to comply with the convention. MLC has already made its mark. Our impression is that for example shipowners are increasingly focusing on nutrition and hygiene on board. This is most positive because we also hear from seafarers that this means a lot in their daily work, both socially but also with respect to efficiency, safety and working together. Seafarers spend considerable time on administration, documentation and internal procedures and this does not always contribute to health and safety and wellbeing but that it does cause a lot of pressure. Control and compliance are the key words. Seahealth hopes that the significant efforts being made to reduce administrative burdens will result in an overall effect on board. There has also been a major focus on health and safety in the offshore wind industry. Offshore wind may be a growth area but it also has its challenges. We should like to help resolve the challenges in health and safety both with respect to specific problems and as a health and safety service for the sector by way of sector guidance and guidelines for the working environment. MLC consolidates the many previous ILO conventions on working conditions, etc., and will become a core convention in the same way as SOLAS, MARPOL and the STCW conventions. Handelsflådens Velfærdsråds photo competition 2012 As part of our strategy, Seahealth has been working to raise the international profile of our activities. Among other things, we have been participating in international activities and networks to gain a wider audience for our products and occupational health and safety work at sea, also on foreign flagged vessels. Piracy is still a big issue for seafarers. However, it is no longer only around the Horn of Africa but also very much the situation in West Africa that is causing concern. Seahealth is keeping a close eye on developments and has gained a good picture of the situation via interviews with seafarers, shipowners and other players. We also followed the situation for the six crew held hostage in Somalia and thought of them and their families. We are pleased that at long last they were all successfully released in 2013. Financially, 2012 was a satisfactory year with results close to being in balance. A lot of activities were carried out and the Board is satisfied with the way our operations have resonated in the industry and is still keen to develop Seahealths role as the anchor point for occupational health and safety at sea. 3
Well-being and good management is essential for a good work environment MLC 2006 In preparing for MLC 2006, we have been contributing with knowledge on occupational health and safety, especially on nutrition and hygiene, for example in the Danish Shipowners Association working group on MLC. Many seafarers have asked questions about the convention and we have regularly posted information about MLC on our website. We offer expertise on working and rest hours, food products, health and safety protection and accident prevention. Catering and hygiene In Project NEPTUNE on catering and skills on board, we have been working on guidelines for shipowners on dealing with catering, which are available at www.tuneupyourseahealth.dk. The project has included meetings and presentations at 16 courses and MSSM, as well as a seminar at SIMAC on the responsibility of masters as health managers. The project is being supported by the Danish Maritime Foundation. Training and hygiene courses were also held for several companies, and training material on hygiene and food safety has been developed, including an e-learning certificate course that complies with MLC 2006. Chemicals In association with various shipowners, Seahealth has produced a new film on chemicals for all crew using chemicals on board and a manual for supervisors that have to instruct others on the use of chemicals on board. The Danish Maritime Authority has approved this as mandatory training material and it has been circulated to ships. Health and Safety at Sea software New functionality developed on feedback from software users on ships and in offices has been added to the program. During the year, several shipowners and ships signed up as active users of the program and several shipowners have chosen to use the program for their entire fleets, regardless of flag state. Piracy Seahealth has put the threat of piracy when sailing in high risk areas and how this affects working life on the agenda with a PhD project. This focuses on how seafarers see the threat and initiatives taken to reduce it. The first tours have been completed. We were also in contact with various seafarers, shipowners, organisations and associations, including the Seamens Wives Association and educational establishments. Crisis management services Psychological crisis management services are provided nationally and internationally at the request of shipowners. Services include support for crew, their relatives and shipowners. MSSM Conference The annual Conference on Maritime Health & Safety and Environment was held in August with record attendance of around 315 delegates. The focus was again on central problems and best practice in occupational health and safety and well-being. 4

Offshore wind Offshore wind is a new focus area and Seahealth has established relations with the industry s primary players in the field of occupational health and safety and well-being. Near-miss The Danish merchant fleet Nearmiss database www.nearmiss.dk has grown by 1,000 reports. The most serious near-misses are circulated as Safety Alerts and during the year, 34 of these were sent out to users. We have also been discussing with shipowners about the outlook for a new near-miss database to be launched in 2013. The guidance is to serve as the basis for other segment-specific guidance, for example for small ferries, wind turbine installation vessels, etc. Safety Organisation - training Seahealth is updating training material for new safety representatives and supervisors who join safety organizations. It often takes some time before they can attend a 16 courses and with this material, they can prepare themselves for joining the safety organization. We also ran a 16 course in Manila and received good input from 16 instructors, shipowners and seagoing personnel. The new training material is expected to be completed at the end of 2013. Hand and finger injury campaign A hand and finger injury campaign has been completed together with the DS-NORDEN. The campaign was a great success, as were its outcomes. The campaign material is available to all shipowners on our website. The material is also a part of our guidance for small ships. Well-being on board In order to draw up a usable tool for management challenges, meetings have been held with shipowners and ship management companies, together with a tour on board a container ship with a multicultural crew. These activities have provided important input for creating a tool for seagoing managers. The management tool will be developed in 2013. 5
