The celestial globe bears the inscription: Britanniarum REGI Augustissimo GEORGIO TER- TIO. Omni cultu et officio devinctissinus, D.Adams. Made by D.Adams Globe Manufacturer & Mathematicial Instrum. Maker, Fleet Street, London. George Adams and his sons George and Dudley ran an important instrument-making business in the second half of the 18th and the beginning of the 19th century in Fleet Street, London. In 1734 George Adams established his own instrument-making workshop, "Tycho Brahe's Head", at Raquet Court, Fleet Street, London. His was the first large instrument-making business in England, and he was appointed Mathematical Instrument Maker to Their Majesties King George II and King George III. In this capacity, for example, he supplied James Cook with instruments to observe the transit of Venus in 1769 in the southern part of the Pacific Ocean. In 1773 the establishment was taken over by his son, George Adams, J.r. (1750-1795). Apart from his activities as an instrument maker, he published a good many scientific and technical works. Like his father he was appointed to the Court. He was followed by his brother Dudley in 1795, who moved the family business to 60 Fleet Street in 1795, and to 6 Jewry in 1800. The establishment closed in 1822. Dudley Adams was apprenticed to train as a mathematical instrument maker. On his marriage years later, his mother gave him the globe plates and tools that had belonged to his father, and in 1788 he opened his own shop at 53 Charing Cross. In 1794, possibly as a result of supplying 28 inch globes for Lord Macartney's mission to China, he was appointed globemaker to George III, a prestigious post previously held by his father. However, he lived well beyond his means, and his bankruptcy in 1817 ended the Adams instrument business, founded in 1734. Similar globes can be seen at Det Kongelige Bibliotek (The Royal Library), Copenhagen. Utrecht, Universitetismuseum and Amsterdam, Rijksmuseum. The architect Caspar Frederik Harsdorff represented the simple Neo-Classicist style which was a reaction against the Rococo. Two of the best examples of his work are his own house Kongens Nytorv 3-5 (built in 1780) and Erichsens Palace - also on Kongens Nytorv (built 1799). He was ready to put his architectural skills to the service of interior decoration, and also the design and making of furniture. Because of his obvious talent Harsdorff was appointed Court Builder and professor. He had numerous pupils, including his friend and colleague C.F. Hansen. Many cabinet-makers were inspired by Harsdorff's stylistic direction - inspiration which is clearly apparent in this bureau.
