By Pat Christensen. Photos by Esmee, John, Tom and Pat Heimdal Danish Dance Group visit to Nordlek 2015 - Part 2 The Bus Trip Nordlek 2015 was now over. Tom had organised a bus for four days of touring Jutland. Travelling mostly along the old country roads, we were able to enjoy the beautiful countryside as we went North to Skagen, East to Ebeltoft and Århus, West to Thyborøn and Lemvig and South to Ribe and Esbjerg. The trips were thoroughly enjoyed by all. Here are some of the highlights. Our first destination was Skagen. It was cold and windy but many of us enjoyed the experience of standing with one foot in Kattegat and one in Skagerak!! Our driver Jørgen showed his great driving skills by squeezing the big bus through the narrow streets of the old town. Some of us loved the famous artists from Skagen so much we skipped lunch by the harbour and hurried up through the town to enjoy the Art Gallery! P S Krøyer s Grenen, where Skagerak and Kattegat meet. Summer Eve on Skagen Beach Enjoying Morning Tea on the road!! Our bus driver Jorgen was an excellent driver and Tour Guide. He and his wife also provided us with fresh crusty buns and homemade strawberry jam, for morning and afternoon tea each day. What a treat!! In Thyborøn, on the west coast of Jutland, we were all fascinated by the World War 2 German Bunkers on the beach. We also visited the house of shells.
Shopping in the rain in Lemvig! Beautiful interior of Ribe Domkirke. Relaxing back at Viborg Danhostel after busy days of bus touring! And so on to Esbjerg! It was the closest I came to Fanø - one of my favourite places in Denmark. The four massive statues are looking over the sea from Esbjerg to Fanø. Esmee is enjoying the view as well. We also visited 'Den Gamle By' in Aarhus as well as numerous other little towns along the way. They were all beautiful! Carriage ride in the old town. Afternoon tea along the way shared with Jørgen and family! It was a trip to remember!! Farvel!! Farewell!! Goodbye!! Friday morning, it was time to say goodbye to Viborg and Nordlek 2015. Kurt and I stayed on to visit family, the rest of our group boarded the bus for the trip back to Copenhagen and more adventures before heading back home.
The History and Legend The name of the Danish flag, the Dannebrog, meaning the flag of the Danes or the red flag, is first encountered in a Danish text from 1478 and in a Netherlandish text from 100 years before that. In a Netherlandish armorial (Gelre) from 1370-1386 a red banner with a white cross is annexed to the coat of arms of Valdemar IV Atterdag. According to legend, the Dannebrog fell from heaven during a battle in Estonia; this legend is mentioned in Christiern Pedersen s Danish Chronicle from the beginning of the 1520s and by the Franciscan monk Peder Olsen c. 1527. This latter relates the event to a battle in 1219, and tradition has maintained that the flag appeared at Lyndanisse on 15 June 1219. The legend presumably came into being around 1500 on the basis of the idea that the royal banner which King Hans lost at his defeat in the Ditmarshes in Northern Germany in 1500 was the Dannebrog that had fallen from heaven. In 1559 Frederik II recaptured the banner and had it hung in Schleswig Cathedral in present-day northern Germany. In a song from the campaign of 1500 the banner charged with the cross is associated with the Roman Emperor Constantine s dream of the cross in 312 before the battle in which he became absolute monarch in the Roman Empire and according to tradition was converted to Christianity. This vision of the cross, to which are linked the words in hoc signo vinces ( under this sign you shall be victorious ) is the prototype of the miracles in the shape of crosses in the sky, which particularly in the Iberian Peninsula were connected with battles between Christians and infidels. The Cross of the Dannebrog A white cross form with a red bordure was used by the Portuguese Order of Christ that was founded in 1318 during a crusade against the Moors. The Portuguese gold coin, the portugalese or português, reproduced the Cross of Christ and the words in hoc signo vinces. From 1591 Christian IV struck Danish coins with a similar cross which quickly became associated with the cross of the Dannebrog. 1603 saw the addition of Constantine s apophthegm, which Arild Huitfeldt had quoted in his Chronicle where Constantine s vision and the legend of the Dannebrog falling from heaven are also compared.
