Urban Mediaspace Aarhus Studietur til Birmingham 4. 6. marts 2012 Program

Formål Studieturen til Birmingham har fokus på partnerskaber, serviceproduktion og kulturel byudvikling. Turen tjener som fagligt input til den fremtidige organisationsudvikling i Borgerservice og Biblioteker frem imod Multimediehuset. Fagligt indhold Ligesom Aarhus bygger Birmingham i disse år et nyt, stort hovedbibliotek, som er én af drivkræfterne for den kulturelle udvikling af byen. I Birmingham er der lagt en overordnet strategi (The Big City Plan) for genskabelse og revitalisering af byen, hvor biblioteket spiller en hovedrolle. Partnerskaber, samarbejder på tværs af sektorerne og sameksistens er tænkt ind fra starten som en del af projekteringsgrundlaget for det nye bibliotek. Det får en placering i byens absolutte centrum, hvor det bygges sammen med Birminghams største teater The Rep og bliver tætte naboer med andre store kulturinstitutioner og et nyt internationalt, kongrescenter, der deler lokaler med Birmingham Symfoniorkester. Det nye biblioteket i Birmingham adskiller sig på afgørende områder fra Multimediehuset, men der er alligevel vigtige fælles indsatser, hvor vi kan inspirere og lære af hinanden. Det gælder ikke mindst den kollektive boform, hvor forskellige institutioner samles under samme tag og kan samarbejde om nye opgaveløsninger og tilbud til brugerne. Vi kigger også på, hvordan den kulturelle byudvikling er tænkt og organiseret i Birmingham, og hvordan de arbejder med at realisere The Big City Plan. Side 2

Mandag kl. 10:00 Welcome/Introduction v/brian Gambles Brian Gambles: Director for the Library of Birmingham, Birmingham City Council Born and educated in Liverpool, Brian Gambles graduated in History from Oxford University in 1976. He joined Birmingham Library Services in 1987 after spending several years in university libraries in London, Plymouth and Sunderland. Since then he has taken on many roles, focussed on planning and service performance, ICT strategy and resources management, and service innovation. Brian is Project Director for the Library of Birmingham, one of Europe s foremost cultural developments, and has recently been appointed as Chief Executive of the newly formed Library of Birmingham Development Trust. Due to open in June 2013, The Library of Birmingham will rewrite the book for library and archive services. Brian has a long-standing interest in new models of library service for changing times and changing communities. He is passionate about the need for radical change in the library service to secure its position in the 21st century urban landscape. Brian has a national profile in public libraries, has authored several articles and has delivered many conference presentations in the UK, Europe and the USA, on the future of libraries and their impact on learning, skills and economic regeneration. Mandag kl. 11:30 - Birmingham & Civic Development v/waheed Nazir & Andrew Round Waheed Nazir: Vi har desværre ikke fået nogen biografi om Waheed Nazir. Vi eftersender, hvis vi modtager den inden afgang. Andrew Round Assistant Director, Planning & Development Andrew Round is the Assistant Director for Planning & Development at Birmingham City Council with particular responsibility for City Centre Development. Andrew is both a Chartered Surveyor & Town Planner and helped shape the Big City Plan, Birmingham City Centre Vision & Masterplan for the next 20 years. Andrew has also played a key role in achieving Enterprise Zone status for the City Centre as well as acting as the Planning & Regeneration lead on key projects such as Birmingham New Street Gateway & Paradise Circus. Andrew has worked for the City Council since 2008, prior to that he spent 15 years in the Private Sector mainly with GVA's Birmingham Office as a Director in their Planning, Development & Regeneration Team. Mandag kl. 13:30 - Culture & the Creative City Initiative v/val Birchall & Debbie Kermode Val Birchall: Assistant Director, Culture Commissioning Originally trained as a musician, Val Birchall held posts in education, marketing and event management with a range of cultural organisations before joining the national arts funding system. She set up and ran Sound Futures, a lottery funded programme in North Birmingham, using music to address the impact of social disadvantage on young people and their families. in 2004 she joined Birmingham City Council's arts team, developing the city's first cultural strategy for children and young people and introducing new models for neighbourhood based delivery of arts activities in addition to managing the Council's arts funding programmes, film office and festivals and overseeing Birmingham's bid to be UK City of Culture. Val is currently responsible for introducing commissioning arrangements across arts, museums, community development and play services, for running the Council's marketing operation and leading the Creative City initiative for the Greater Birmingham and Solihull Local Enterprise Partnership. Her commitment to supporting young people's development through the arts is reflected in her roles as a trustee of the Gallery 37 Foundation and director of the Birmingham Ormiston Academy school for performing arts and digital media. Debbie Kermode: Deputy Director, Ikon Gallery, Birmingham Deputy Director at Ikon since Oct 2012. From 2009 Debbie Kermode was the Director of Bright Space an arts education charity that delivered the Creative Partnerships programme for Birmingham and developed cultural opportunities for children and young people. After completing an MA in Museum Studies at Leicester University Debbie became curator at IKON Gallery where she developed the internationally acclaimed Off-Site programme. More recently Debbie worked as Producer for Fierce! Festival promoting ground breaking live art across the West Midlands by inserting it in to innovative public situations. She continued to pursue this practice of participatory work with Birmingham Opera Company, RSC and Capsule bringing programmes as diverse as opera, live art and heavy metal music to younger audiences. She is also on the board of Pentabus Theatre Company, Fierce Festival and a governor at Dame Ellen Pinsent Special School. Side 11

Mandag kl. 15:30 - Academic Partnerships v/beverley Nielsen & Prof Ian Grosvenor Beverley Nielsen: Beverley Nielsen works at Birmingham City University as Director Employer Engagement. She has previously worked at the Birmingham Institute of Art & Design, ranked in the top 10 UK Art & Design faculties for research, facilitating research and teaching collaborations between business and the university. Her interest is in harnessing the West Midlands' productive design expertise to develop our unique Design DNA and drive competitiveness. Previous experience includes working as Regional Director, CBI West Midlands, Chief Executive Heart of England Tourist Board, Director, Aga Foodservice Group plc, a FTSE 250 business at that time, now known as Aga Rangemaster. Her consultancy, Beverley Nielsen Communications has worked with West Midlands businesses including Aga Foodservice plc and Pashley Cycles Ltd. She was honoured to be recognised as Midlands Business Woman of the Year in 1998 and awarded an Honorary Masters Degree from Coventry University in 1999. She was delighted to be elected a County Councillor for Malvern Trinity in Worcestershire in June 2009. Ian Grosvenor: Professor of Urban Educational History and Deputy Pro Vice Chancellor for Cultural Engagement at the University of Birmingham. He is author of numerous articles and books on racism, education and identity, the visual in educational research, the material culture of education and the history of urban education. Books include, Assimilating Identities, Racism and Education in Post 1945 Britain (1997), Silences and Images, The Social History of the Classroom (1999) with Martin Lawn and Kate Rousmaniere, The School I d Like (2003) and School (2008) both with Catherine Burke, Materialities of Schooling (2005) with Martin Lawn and Children and Youth at Risk (2009) with Christine Mayer and Ingrid Lohmann. Partnership projects with the Library of Birmingham include Connecting Histories, Birmingham Stories and the Children s Lives exhibition. He is Managing Editor of the international journal Paedagogica Historica and Secretary General of the European Educational Research Association. Side 12

Tirsdag kl. 12:00 Thinktank/Museum of Science & Industry Thinktank har til huse i Millennium Point, som mixer attraktioner, uddannelsesinstitutioner, pædagogiske centre, kommercielle erhverv samt administrationsfunktioner fra den offentlige sektor. Visionen for Thinktank er at være et videnskabsmuseum i verdensklasse, der skaber mulighed for formel og uformel læring gennem teknologi, deltagelse og oplevelser. Vi bliver vist rundt af Philip Singleton, som er nyudnævnt Chief Executive ved Millennium Point. Om Philip Singleton lyder det blandt andet: Philip joins Millennium Point, having been Director of Major Sites for the London Borough of Newham where he was responsible for the post Olympic masterplans for Stratford and the Royal Docks. He was previously Assistant Director for City Centre Development for Birmingham City Council, responsible as Project Director for the Big City Plan and the Eastside Master Plan, and a senior member of Birmingham s regeneration team. Tirsdag kl. 15 Powershopping Efter opsamling og gruppernes afrapportering får I lige en time til powershopping, inden bussen henter os og kører os til lufthavnen.
